Thanks! I didn’t know you could do it with Google too. I am using Garmin Basecamp right now to plan a major trip this spring. It is a little bit of work to get it to work right but I think I finally have it figured out. I’m working on getting this review an update soon!
Hoping to see the part ii of this posted soon?? I played with one the other day at snowmobile show. Couldn’t believe how slow it was to redraw the map when I scrolled around. It was really bad making me think processor in this unit is super slow. Was pretty bummed about that and makes it hard for me to wanna drop $550-750 on one. For that price point this thing should be screaming fast.
It’s on my to do list! I’ve used it all summer now and just have to knock out the video. We used it a ton on our Black Hills trip and there’s a lot of things I like about it… but then there’s some things about it I just don’t get. Anyways, I should have that up some time this month I think!
I hope that Garmin gets their maps up to date. One of the most important parts of your system is that MURS antenna. Contrary to most beliefs, you must get that antenna up on the roof and away from all metal. By the way your Garmin Tread radio will work with any other MURS radio from Retevis, Baofeng or any other VHF MURS radios. I hope that Garmin comes out with units with larger map screens.
So I purchased trail maps of Wisconsin from WATVA on a micro SD card and they loaded fine on the Tread, but I have to turn off most or all of other maps. I do wish the pre-loaded maps were better. I’m still playing with it and want to make sure I figure it all out before I post another update. I’ll probably try to mount that antenna somewhere else. It’s a plastic roof but I’d like to get it further back either way. I’ll have to rig up another way to mount it to a vertical roll bar. Thanks for the info!
Thanks for the HONEST review! I'm considering getting one of these and am wondering...can the Garmin camera be switched on at any time or only when in reverse (I'm guessing that part depends on how you wire it). I'd love to be able to use it as a rear-view mirror! Thanks and keep up the good work!
You bet! Be sure to check out part 2 because a year passed between my first and my second, and Garmin released a ton of updates to basically fix everything I complained. ruclips.net/video/d-T0sEg9FX4/видео.html The camera switches when you press a button on the screen, it’s not wired into the machine so it doesn’t automatically in reverse. So you can use it to look behind at anytime, but when you’re driving forward, it only will stay on for 10 seconds or so. I wish you could leave it on to use more like a rear view mirror.
I am going to buy one but I input a aftermarket map program and manage though garmin base camp works great. In the maps I input also has all food gas and hotels!
With the better maps it has grown on me. We used the heck out of it overlanding last month. There’s some downsides, it could be better in some aspects, but overall it’s been so useful in the Nation Forests and once we had good Wisconsin trail maps, I’d buy it again. I’m going to have a six month review here up shortly.
I have the VV Mapping snowmobile maps for my handheld Garmin, but it’s too hard to use it while snowmobiling so I don’t have much experience with it. I’ve had several Garmins and never got anything on them from Garmin except roads. Always had to buy the maps I want. We have a General with Ride Command and love it. Polaris does a great job with their GPS, but it is expensive. If this Garmin works out (with aftermarket mapping), it would be a very good alternative.
We’re going to have the updated review posted very soon. With good maps, the Garmin has grown on us and has been very useful. We have the VV maps too now and they work great for the SxS… when we were in the Black Hills, the MV use maps that came loaded were awesome to have. That said, there’s a couple things that keep popping up that prevent us from using it to its full potential. Anyways we’ll have more on it soon! Thanks for watching!!!
I also live in Wisconsin (Milwaukee Area) and ride in Black Rivers Falls along with Langlade County. Have you found any solution for updated maps? I just got the Garmin Tread for Christmas 2021 as well as my brother in law. He leads our pack and I am the caboose so the communication features should be helpful
Yes! Get the Great Lakes ATV/UTV GPS package from National Motorsports. It has WI, MN, MI I'll put the links below. They mail you a micro card, plug it in to the Tread and go. Once we got our own maps, the Tread really started to grow on me. I'm working on an updated review of it. There's still a few things I don't like about it, but overall it has been really useful to have - but buying good maps is key. This is the map of Wisconsin to give you an idea: www.watva.org/index.php/where-to-ride/statewide-trail-map Here's where you can buy it. We have the paper book too which comes in handy for trip planning. You can download a map update for free within a year of purchase, and then for I want to say $10 after that, you can keep downloading updated versions of the map. For some trips we're planning this summer, I've loaded it into Garmin basecamp and have actually been planning some routes in there and exporting them as trips to the Tread. www.shopnms.com/collections/map-products
I’ve been meaning to do an updated review. Overall - I’m glad I bought it and I’d do it again. It’s come in really handy but you need to load your own maps most places. There’s a few things with the interface and whatnot that make me scratch my head. It’s like 80% there. If they took that last 20% across the finish line it would be incredible. As of now… it’s good but could be better.
Utah has digitized all maps and you can get a CD of these trails and download them on a Garmin. There is also maps of a lot of the specialty trails such as the Paiute Trail System. Could these maps be downloaded on the the Tread?
It does now! The Tread was pretty rough until they got some software updates out. But now with the VV Mapping - you’re right it’s pretty rad. We have an updated review here after our first 8 months / 3,000 miles: ruclips.net/video/d-T0sEg9FX4/видео.html
Hello there, I was curious what two or three key features the Garmin Tread have that the Polaris Ride Command does not? Another question I had was why do you use both the Garmin based system as well as the Polaris Ride Command at the same time? Thank you.
Hi! Good question. I do have an updated Tread review on our channel I posted a week ago - so definitely check that out for some more details. To answer your question: 1) Turn by turn directions. Ride Command will only give you a direction / heading where Tread allows you to plot your route via waypoints. That’s really nice a lot of places we ride. 2) Ability to install custom maps. We have all the road routes and trails loaded for WI. When we were in the Black Hills, some trails did not show up on our Ride Command but showed up on our Tread. As for using both - We initially wanted to test and compare both and figured we’d probably sell the Tread, but it wound up being so useful we kept it. We use the Tread more than Ride Command because of the custom maps we can load. That said, having both comes in handy sometimes. When we were in the Black Hills, we had routes or trails we wanted to run laid out on USFS Motor Vehicle Use Maps. The Tread has MVUMs installed so they matched really well - but sometimes a road sign we came across had a local or common name versus a forest road number posted - and Ride Command tended to use those. Ride command is nice because it’s always there in our machine. And because of that it hooks up easier to our phones and headset and stuff. So - do we need both? Definitely not. We could make due with one. It’s redundant. If you’re riding in a place where a ton of people ride, known trails, Ride Command is simple and works great. If you get out in the middle of nowhere, especially in some National Forest land or something, or there’s a ton of different, complicated routes you need to navigate, the Tread is easier to work with.
Good day, I am thinking of buying one of these but I have one question and maybe you can answer it. When out riding does the system leave a track line as you are moving along that you can see on the screen. Most of my riding is in WV and it comes in very handy to have a visiable track line when out exploring. This may sound like a dumb question but my 396 motorcycle GPS does not or I at least can't figure out how to turn it on.
Yes it does. And you can set it up where they appear on your map after or not. It’s pretty simple to do. When you start your journey if you “start” a track you can also save it with your route data - speeds, avg, time, etc
@@TheNorthwoodsFamily Thank you, figured it did but wanted to ask first. I found it on the 396 but you have to zoom in very close to see it, it's very small.
Garmin expects you to buy a $90 SD card for trails in each state . I'm in AZ and none of the major trails are on the Tread. Got the SD card ordered have to see what I get. Ya got to admit it's misleading to call it a Garmin Trail.
Yeah… it’s a rugged GPS unit. Waterproof and all but other than the USFS MVUMs, you gotta buy your own maps. I don’t know that you couldn’t do a lot of the same stuff with a cheaper GPS for your car. We’ve added a really good map system of Wisconsin to ours - and now the unit is working well for us. It was really handy on our Black Hills trip because that was all NF. But I would say I expected better maps pre-loaded out of the box for $800.
Yep you are right. I think Ride Command must work off a crowd-sourced mapping system which is why they have more routes in their system. Garmin probably figures you’ll just buy and load your own maps. I’ve spent more time with it now and am working on an updated review. I purchased and loaded my own maps for our area and it’s been really useful. There are a few things with the interface that could be better but overall it’s been rather useful on and off-road for us.
what I'm' trying to find out is if you can use the radio function, but with a bluetooth headset and not the handset.. let me know if you test that first.
You can do your mapping using google maps, and then transfer the tracks. There are a couple steps but some of the RV channels show you how
