Happy Birthday, been tuning in since doing my first research about Japan in 2015 , when I found your videos to be the best , and decided to go back to Japan every year since on an extreme shoestring budget , eating from 7 Eleven and scabing cheap flight just to get there, and sleeping in capsules ,so thankyou for your excitement and places you have featured !!
Thank you so much John for bringing us with you on your Bday! Really awesome live streams today! The view and the bird was amazing! I love it! Again happy birthday and wishing you good health and all the best! More videos and subscribers to come! :-)
Wow! So Cool to see the ice frozen like that there. Ive seen frozen ice were I live in Maine but not like this of course. I would have to go to Alaska or parts of Canada to actually see this so thanks for sharing and its pretty amazing that you got a single for as long as you did being that far out.
Couldn't sleep so was up at 3am watching you and the bird. This looks like a really good trip thanks for braving the cold for us and 🎉 Happy Birthday John🎉
I just loved this video. Happy late, late birthday John. I like all the different things that you show us and do. Thank you for that. That cute bird. I think he needed a little rest from flying. I'm like kind of new and I'm going back on all your videos. Glad that I did find you though. Best wishes from Bethlehem pa.
Greetings from northern Minnesota! John, Happy Birthday to you! Sure fun to be able to watch you do things and in a place I most likely will never visit. Keep up the great work, and thank you for bringing us along!
Now to watch what I missed! I did grab the last 20 minutes live. And a HAPPY BORN DAY to YOU! We have ferries that the gulls follow across the Sound riding the air currents created by the moving vessel. We hold bread out over the rail and the gulls grab it.
Happy Birthday John. 😊🎁🎂🥂 I wish you all the best, stay healthy and enjoy your day. 😊✌ The bird was so funny. :D This boattrip was really relaxing to watch.
btw, you really should consider getting a Waon or Suica card so you don't have to rummage for cash or coins when you're buying things like that blue beer. it's a little bit of convenience especially when it's cold and if you have gloves on.
Happy Birthday John :) . someone once said age is like a old wine, more older it gets better it taste ;). You are very much like that old beautiful, refined wine who has a beautiful heart and soul. God bless you :). Cheers :)
I am 67 and I still have the maturity and imagination levels of a 14 to 18 year old. Don't lose that attitude my friend. It will help you live longer. when other people grow old they also break an age barrier. ON which side do you stay young and on which side do you start growing old?
Almost exactly 3 years ago we went on the Aurora. We were told that the ice conditions were too bad to leave the harbour but the ship was crunching through ice all the time. There was more ice in the harbour than you saw at sea.
Hey Steamboat John! I was trying to eat my breakfast with one hand and drink my Costco green tea and hold my phone to watch you. Didn't work very well. So I figured out how to get you to come in on our TV, through our little Roku box. Wow! You're spectacular in 43 inch. Your head is really big! Wise not to turn your back on Toby. He would have stolen your hat 🙉🦇 :-(
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN! WHAT!?! You are younger than me :P Update: Thats a lot of people, just like going up Skytree. I didn't expect that. Thank you for the ice breaker cruise experience.
OMG! So my husband drives those tour buses that walked by at 54:00...he works for a tour company in the southwest US. ❤ I am getting a chance to binge-watch some of your older videos. Great content as always. By the way, why is the beer blue? Is it just coloring?
In a way the guy you mentioned saying Ainu look like Sami (Finnish indigenous people) is right. The older photos before colour photography Sami and Ainu have similarities. Probably caused by similar weather conditions that people have had to adapt too. Modern day Sami facial features look more Nordic and Scandinavian. I could be wrong but this is my opinion :)
I looked at the map to figure out the mountain. My guess is the boat sailed out to the northeast and was returning heading southwest. If you look at a map of the area, Abashiri is at the base of a long peninsula that points seawards to a long chain of islands (the northernmost part of the volcanic arc system that makes up Japan) that extends to a peninsula that is part of Russia. The northern part of these islands is the Kuril Islands which Russia seized after declaring war on Japan in 1945, I don't think Japan recognizes Russian sovereignty on the Kurils, but I don't know how far north Japanese control extends. This island chain encloses, to the East, the Sea of Okhotsk, while Sakhalin (what's north of Wakkanai of "jump" fame) separates it from the Sea of Japan to the West (don't know if the Russians call their part of it something else). Anyhow, in the video you can see SEVERAL peaks, don't know which is the one in the middle, but here are the possibilities, from west to east: Mokotosan 960m (this is far to the south, and unlikely to be it), Sharidake (1440m), Minamisharidake (1400m) (behind Sharidake if seen from the boat), Kounabetsudake (430m), Unabetsudake (1400m), Onnebetsudake (1230m). There are a few more peaks to the NE but since the boat was pretty close to harbor I don't think they are candidates. Ideally John should have taken compass bearings.. (^_^).. My guess is that was Sharidake. I might also mention there's Iwakeshiyama (400m) west of Abashiri and Sanchozan (120m). The peninsula to the WEST of Abashiri houses an air force base - surprising since it's up in the mountains. Satellite images show a couple of helicopter landing pads and no runways, and it looks like a radar installation (quite obvious why they'd need one there).
Wow. The subwoofer is really getting a workout! I wonder if the Seven Elevens sell glacier ice - it supposedly has gases dissolved in it and it pops and crackles as it melts in your drink. You'd have to collect it from actual glaciers or real icebergs (which calve off glaciers). Looks like the pack ice has been broken, I wonder if they plan to break any new passages.
Those birds, by the way, are seagulls. The big, nasty sort, not the small, delicate cute ones. I wonder if people feed the ducks in Abashiri - it was sort of a winter pastime in Amsterdam. People would save up breadcrusts over the week and feed the birds (mainly ducks and coots, but also the swans - which were scary but didn't hurt when they bit you on your winter jacket). The big gulls would bully all the other birds, they gave them a wide berth. I was always amazed by how so many birds could fit into a couple cubic meters of air when the bread was scattered without getting hurt.
The cosplay Captain's outfit reminded me of something from Mangajin (Mangajin was a California-published magazine that sought to teach people Japanese and about Japan through manga). There was a REALLY weird manga title based on someone who would set people up for a fall and then orchestrate it. In this case the victim was a man who loved karaoke and loved singing enka, even if he was "onchi" (tone deaf). He chose a nautical song to sing, so the person who arranged these things arranged to have a hall filled with an audience, had him dress up in a captain's outfit complete with a pipe. Of course the minute he stepped out onto the stage everything started to go wrong.
You have a young attitude, a young mind and a young life, so don' t lose it.
Happy Birthday. Nice video... The Bird was awesome...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN! May God bless you with many many more adventures!
Honestly the bird part so funny 😂

also will you be visiting Moyoro Kaizuka-kan? it's a nice little museum about the prehistoric people of Okhotsk, even before there were the Ainu.
Happy birthday and all the best for the next 365 days in your life!

Happy Birthday to you ❗️🎉🎂
Sorry I missed wishing you a happy birthday live.
Happy Birthday 🎊🎁🎉
Thanks for sharing this boat trip, very enjoyable video. 👍👍 In Chinese culture, pouring liquids on the ground is for offerings to dead people.
mmm, I love that peach water in the vending machine. I drank it all the time and sometimes find it at the intl. grocery store here in the US.

Yeah Jim. good for him. We owe him. John you owe him!
Happy Birthday!!! :)
You will find ice like that off Duluth Harbor in Minnesota and across Lake Superior.
Hi John. Happy Birthday!!

Did you retrieve the coffee cup? ^_^;;

I went there twenty years ago. There are cases where an eagle and sea leopard are on the ice. It is a sight that can be seen only at this time.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN
