This type of shield has two notable, _unique_ uses that I can see: *1.* The bottom of the teardrop could be sharpened like a pike as a heavy stabbing weapon or to spike the shield into the ground for stationary cover *2.* The ornate cutouts on the side would be reinforced against shear force to provide a method of trapping the sword of an enemy, allowing you to disarm them *Kind of 3.* In a magical setting, which emphatically and quite unfortunately reality is not (or fortunately depending on your faith in humanity), that large purple shield boss could be a gem enchanted to generate a surface boundary layer over the connected, mana-conductive shield metal (perhaps mithril) that allows it to withstand greater physical impacts via diffusing the force vectors outwards, or to ward off magical projectiles by way of mana dispersal or even absorption and conversion of the mana into the gem as extra fuel to maintain the barrier.

A shield with that shape is not only used for protection. With the right handling weight, plus hardness, and sharpness coming into play the pointy end can be a viable weapon. In that respect, the design is good enough for the the purpose it could serve, fantasy or not.

Nice build! Fun fact, the "hooks/holes" on the sides (the whole top part of the shield, actually) can actually be found on historical germanic dueling shields from the XVth century (look for the Talhoffer Fechtbuch for some examples), so the design is more historical than you may think! It may be seen as an hybrid of the germanic dueling shield and the teardrop shield of the XIth-XIIth century. Although, for practical use, it would be better to replace the straps by a single vertical handle running the whole length of the shield (with the added advantage of not having you elbow sticking out of the hole). Keep up the good work!
Girl ! YOU ARE SO TALENTED ! My (now 25 yr old) daughter and I have done cosplay for years- we always used craft foam - but seeing how you make things out of real leather and wood and metal is absolutely EPIC.
a bit of medieval-nerd trivia: the wooden shield would have been perfect even if it looked "wooden" since all European medieval and ancient shields where made out of wood, but there is nothing wrong with making it look like metal either... Even if most medieval shields where made of wood, some had a metal (generally steel or Iron) middle section (called boss) or may have had the rim covered by metal (bronze, copper, some times iron). In some other cases (i.e. ancient Greek hoplon), shields may have had a thin sheet of bronze or leather covering the face
I love that after making an armor with crotch spike she get's defensive over a design for a shield, that would perfectly well, especially with a spear. The only significant difference between the shield she made and one that would actually be used (other than material of course) is that the bos would likely be hallow. In all other aspects the design works perfectly fine. The holes would be hard to abuse by a potential attacker. Even with the holes the shield offers plenty of cover and the holes make it easy to attack while wielding the shield.
If it's Gil-galad inspired then it's clearly historically accurate, unless there are still elves down in the comments that haven't left for the undying lands, otherwise I don't see how we could dispute it :P

Technically, you can find a fair number of shield designs that had cutouts in the sides. They were usually wielded alongside a spear so you could stab through the cutout while covering more of your body. I believe the Minoan and Mycenaean Greeks used them, mostly.
As a hobbyist weaponsmith and -carver, I must say, that is one sexy shield you got there! It's like a slim kiteshield with cutouts. Those cutouts COULD maybe be used to hook weapons or stuff aside if your character has some insane speed/strength... not only that, but it's pretty well made. The only thing that might be useful next time is to add a layer of fabric that's glued on to the wood, to give it extra strength and make it more like a IRL shield. Outside of that, very well done!
Shields for jousting in some periods had a one sided hole for the pole. Personally I thought it was a good spot to hook a spear to steady for a charge. But I'm no expert. Just a hobbyist smith.

This is honestly so amazing... My first sheidk was essentially just the back of a washing machine, with a door handle and leather strap. Along with some random paint design in the front. My second was made of wood (mainly made it to be the counterpart to my wooden sword) and also made of foam, and it turned out decently, although kids wish it was more curved. To be fair, I am contemplating remaking it as a proper one out of wood and curved haha. But honestly it is incredible how awesome your stuff looks
The holes would be good for hooking onto an arm or leg to temporarily restrain an opponent. No idea if that would be worth it but it looks cool as heck

That is the most beautiful shield I've ever seen. You know the cutouts on the sides, while not historically accurate, MIGHT be used to trap an opponents sword and leave them momentarily open to your attack. Love that your wig has just enough stray hairs that it looks like you may have just come from battle. This, along with your amazing armor design, is perfection. If I were you, I would spend a significant amount of time each day trying to imagine what circumstance I could create as an excuse to wear them again. All of your work is exquisite.
I think the spearmen carry similar sbields as Gil-galad, though less detailed. By far my favourite type of shield. Recognised it immediately when I saw the thumbnail. Love it! 💜
Watching this and seeing the intro with the armour in the background I'm still thinking the fellowship of the ring has a tenth member to add and then you mention Giliad as inspiration for the design Amazing watching you work, phenomenal results, a stunning shield! Keeping the black areas was a good call, really works well with the rest of the colours. Really cool seeing the laser cutter in action.

If the world is attacked by dragons I'm pairing up with Nerdforge
And if zombies make it Jörg Sprave
My too 100%
Sounds like a cunning move. :)
I shall follow the Blessed Mage of Crafting into battle!!! ✨🧙🏻♀️🛡️🐉
yup, me too, but i'm gonna grab some real weapons from awe me first, just in case... :D, wooden weapons are not super effective against dragons :P, sorry Martina :)
Seeing the shield with the armor gave me chills this is incredible
The shield looks awesome, and I seriously CAN'T get over how great the armor looks. You could star as an elf maiden in the next LOTR movie!
Now all we need is a weapon!
Bow and arrows?
Sword?
Axe?
WHO IS WITH ME? *raise paintbrush into the air*
I would love to see her make a bow
Yes! A bow!!
I think axe would.be more her style
@@girl_from_everywhere she need Thor war-hammer
@@tihomirrasperic no . maybe a classic sword
Really cool build, thanks for sharing
Thing is about your shield, is that if worn that way, it could be an effective shield with the cutouts being sword catches when you extend your arm.
Depending on the strap positions, use it like a spiked pavise. It should do what you suggested more effectively.

Someone watches shad..
Love the colors ! The purple makes it just perfect and so mysterious. I loved it, congratulations for this first shield ! :)
This shield is freaking stunning!! It’s not a surprise as everything you make is so high quality and you’re insanely talented.
The holes would be good for hooking onto an arm or leg to temporarily restrain an opponent. No idea if that would be worth it but it looks cool as heck
There is little better about an awesome project than a project that has more you can add to it!
I love the entire look coming together with the shield. You look like you steped right out of a fantast realm. Well done can't wait to see what you do next
I was thinking it looks inspired by world of warcraft.
SHE JUST HAS TO GET RID OF THE STRAP AND HOLLOW OUT THE BOSS AND PUT A WOODEN HANDLE ON IT
Everything you touch is an absolute masterpiece and both of you inspire me so much. I look forward to Everything you post! I'd love some more content like the armor and shield making. Absolutely stunning!
You’re such a genuine open minded person with a powerful imagination I love you’re creative ideas keep it up your inspiring me
The shield is so beautiful and detailed that I can only imagine a knight in battle begging to the foe "oh please, spare my shield, stab me instead"
"the countless stars of heaven's field were mirrored in his silver shield"
you are one hell of a craftsperson grats that entire outfit is totally awesome
Your talent blows me away every time. I started out watching you paint your both of your brother's rooms and since then I've binge watched your videos for the past two days.
All of your work is exquisite.
imagine having a pc case designed by nerdforge, i would literally throw all my money at you guys
Dude where did you get that face?
I want it
@@lonelygovernment4544 you get them if you are a supporter in youtube :)
hmm.....(writes it down) ... :D, i'd love to see that actually
Cutouts like that did appear in historical duelling shields.
yeah, a shield like that isn't actually unreasonable.
Yeah, it's perfect for a spear!
It looks like some magical Elven Cello. I love it
Everything is gorgeous: shield, armor, character.
Sooo... We have an Armor... And a shield.... We all know where this is going...
EXCALIBUR IT IS!

Well let us just conquer Norway now that we're at it😂😂
You need a Matching Sword and Scabbard for this Epic Shield.
"People in the comments get mad, and that's funny!" Best possible reaction to that crap. :)
For her first shield she did a great job, from a woodworking perspective she did really great in bending and adding the details to hide it's wooden
I think the spearmen carry similar sbields as Gil-galad, though less detailed. By far my favourite type of shield. Recognised it immediately when I saw the thumbnail. Love it! 💜
This is awesome I didn’t think about you making a shield
Watching this and seeing the intro with the armour in the background I'm still thinking the fellowship of the ring has a tenth member to add and then you mention Giliad as inspiration for the design
Amazing watching you work, phenomenal results, a stunning shield! Keeping the black areas was a good call, really works well with the rest of the colours.
Really cool seeing the laser cutter in action.
I'm living for that dark purple teardrop!
When the wood first came out of it mold, I could almost hear The Medatron scream no don't cut that its perfect! It woudl have been a perfect Roman Shield.
I love that you even add details to the stuff that most people aren't going to see. The attention to detail is just so beyond! Great Job!
this channel fuels my RPG Addiction
I totally blame you for (ok, not "blame" but attribute) my increased use of the Chef's Kiss!
I’m so impressed you kept your jumper stain free lol if I did that in a light coloured shirt it would be covered haha
I can't believe how talented you are, I'm in awe whenever I watch your videos. Thank you for sharing your abilities with the world, it makes people like me realize what can be accomplished if you put your mind to it.
This shield is amazing!! I love the colours and the little stars and gold designs you put on it! And it looks so cool with your armour!!
Someone: this shield is not proteccct!
Martina *grabs this shield*: yes. It's atacc! 'Cause its magiccc! Bonk!
"His shining shield was scored with runes,

Thought it fitting ^^
Now you just need a weapon and helmet to complete the set.
...and suddenly a loud, dark voice came out of nowhere and said "Well done, Warrior Princess of the Ages. Now go and fullfill thy fate!"
I find your work absolutely amazing. I am not a gamer but i do love the medieval era. I have tried some of your projects, much easier ones, on a much smaller scale & have such a blast. Thank you & your boyfriend for being such fun artists.
Discovered your channel this evening and addicted already. Love your mix of creativity but without taking things too seriously, makes for really enjoyable content.
Oh and the sword is cool too.😸
