There are 2 of these in our club, 1 had the rudder separate and the other, running the recommended 3s felt like it didn't have the power to take flight. But overall, looks like a lovely glider.
Hi Andrew. Had my ASW28 for about five months now and just waiting to get some time in on cheaper models before I possibly wreck this beautiful machine. Look forward to you flying yours. Regards.
I got one of these and use it solely for sloping , lots of wing flex looks awesome , had to use full throws of the ailerons etc , its a bit lazy to turn otherwise , the stronger the wind the better ,,,,,,, looking forward to your maiden flight video !
The motor is decent too. not a rocket ship but still good. I found the standard aileron a bit anemic, so a good mix to use flaps with it makes it pop. the balance of the whole craft is excellent. small battery required - I used a 1500mah 3s but it also flew well with a 3000mah low rating multistar further back. inside the canopy you could park a mini minor as well. would be great for APM or other GPS / RTH - fpv solution. thanks for posting.
great glider, preset up for failure using the supplied clevis band, servos unhook from the horns and then you have to buy another glider, good job china! could it be chance? i dont think so. once again we have people like you to enforce the checks and balances. thank you!
Andrew I want to use this or a Phoenix 2400 as a long range FPV platform with a big 4S battery. Can you remember what the unpowered speed of the two are, or what you guess they would be. Or how much faster the asw28 is compared to the 2400. Any insight would be appreciated, thank you and I hope your well.
Hi Andrew....what size Fuel line do you use for the Control rods...I like that Idea and would like to pick up some Fuel line to do the same....thank you ....as always I really enjoy your Reviews of RC equipment.
Thanks Andrew. But seriously hot glue reinforcement for control surfaces !!! Here at Werribee on a hot thermal day that hot glue is going to run like water. Surely tough tape would be better. Great build video.
AS soon as i sa the reinforcement, i immediately think of adding proper hinges..better and more durable than tape. more work , sure, but since the parts need reinforcing, why not?
Hello Andrew, Congratulations for your videos very inspiring ! I would have your opinion on 2 gliders you know well i think ;) Which glider do you prefer the most between ASW28 V2 & Phoenix V2 2000, and why ? which one do you think is the best for thermal in plains ? In advance, thank to you, Ben.
Phoenix V2 2000 for me, better all rounder. The ASW28 is cheap and looks great but doesn't work all that well as a thermal glider, fine for sloping and powering around.
Thanks ! Too bad, I hesitated to buy it for a long time ... what do you think is missing to be a good thermal glider? Is it too heavy? Or is it due to its geometry or the profile of the wing not enough carrying the wing? because in this case keeping the fuselage very design and resistant we must perhaps be able to adapt another wing ... It could be an idea of experience for your video blog;) Anyway thank you very much for your wise advice, Hello from France to Australia, Benwhite.
Hi Andrew, where abouts in your opinion is the best spot for COG, as I've still got one of these still under the bed and hopefully we will get a pleasant spring here in the uk. Happy new year and keep making the videos
Good Morning Mr. Andrew. I have a foam plane that weighs 1.3 kg (INCLUDING EVERYTHING TO FLY) I put an A2212 / 10 T / 1400 KV motor on it, but it wasn't enough to fly. 3S / 100C battery and 8X4 propeller. Can you recommend a motor with more torque?
Ok. So the big question Andrew - ASW 28 or the Phoenix 2000 V2 if pushed to live with only one glider. Would the decision be different if it was going to be used primarily for FPV?
For powered flying on FPV they would be about equal, for actual gliding I prefer the Phoenix. The ASW28 is kind of twitchy and prone to stalling unless you're on the sticks maintaining the airspeed.
Hi, great video. I've been flying drone for three years and I'd like to start a new experience with plane, fpv and long range. Do you think this is a good model to start or could you give me an advice? Thank you
It would be good for long range FPV, but it's not a good model to learn on. Better to learn on a pusher motor glider like a Bixler so you dont destroy the motor or prop when you hit nose first. You will crash often while learning
Hello Andrew, Did you change the engine. I'm riding my settings to fpv, but I have 2.5 kilograms. I believe that the original engine has no power to this set. Do you have any suggestions?
Stock motor at the moment which is fine for thermal gliding. I really don't have enough flight time with it yet but Happy Ket uses his for FPV - ruclips.net/channel/UCtq9EDXfvFzjbQ3FKkG0saA Maybe contact him for advice.

Excellent video. Just received mine the other day. Hope it flies as well as my Diamond 2500. Do you think a 2200 3s battery will present any issues? I'm willing to add weights if needed. Thanks
For thermal gliding I'd choose the Phoenix Evolution 2.6m over the ASW28. The Range 2000 is not really a thermal glider, more of a long range FPV cruiser.
thank you as always for the reply, though i like the Phoenix evo, its just to big, wont fit in the car and storing it would be a pain, would not want to have to keep assembling the wings for each flight, at least the ASW wings clip in, these things have to be factored in
Thanks ! Too bad, I hesitated to buy it for a long time ... what do you think is missing to be a good thermal glider? Is it too heavy? I think the wing design doesn't scale down well for a foam model. It flies well at speed but doesn't float for thermal gliding. Needs more chord length or less weight. The T-tail is too flexy and the fuselage it too draggy. I use the ASW28 wing on a Phoenix 2000 fuselage for slope soaring and it's fantastic.

Take a bin bag to hold all the broken plane bits. But seriously now, take off in to the wind, try to keep the plane out in front and don't let it go behind you. Land in to the wind. But best to wait for less wind.
Of the big cheap foamies the Phoenix Evolution in the 2.6m configuration. Lighter and less drag than the 2400, and a better gliding wing than the ASW28.
Have just received my Volantex 2000 ranger. Great kit and well built. I have one small issue with regards to the installation of the recv esc and the best way to connect the aileron wires. It is supplied with 2 Y leads. One for the aileron and the other for the flaps they both have numbers on them but it seems at odds with how I was told to connect them, The instructions do not mention any of these operations. Your advise would be appreciated Thanks Colin
Depends on your gear. If you have 8ch receiver and a good programmable transmitter, plug every control into it's own channel, then you can have fun with programming. If you have a simple transmitter and 6ch receiver then you have to use Y Leads and use one channel for ailerons and one channel for flaps.
Thought you'll like to know that the ordered ASW28 arrived, somewhat damaged. The canopy was cracked, one of the fixation pins was missing, and the control horns and some of the screws were absent. I got the impression that the damage to the packaging was deliberate - not difficult, the packaging is minimal to say the least. Anyway, I've contacted Banggood and am waiting for their response. It's really a question of more delay - it takes at least a fortnight for anything to arrive from Banggood. When I'll finally be able to build and fly the glider I'll be considering upping the motor power. Can you advise on which motor, and, probably which battery?
Very annoying Robin. The canopy is a weak design. I left the motor as it was. Chat to Allen Moore about mods, he has done a lot more flying with his than I did.
I have only used my Phoenix 2000 as a motorises sloper, so I would compare the 3 ch Radian to the ASW. Radian thermals easier, ASW is more fun to play with and looks cooler.
No it's not a good first plane, it's not even a very good glider unfortunately. Go for something like a Bixler with a pusher motor. It will also be a much better FPV platform for you in the future.

Oh how irritating Michael. I cant find spare wing tips either. Might have to make one yourself or ask on the RCGroups ASW28 thread. It flies fine without the tips, but looks better with them.
Thanks for replying - er . . . what's blender tape? I've got seven different types of tape in my box, but have never heard of 'blender tape'. PS. Like your show. Clear and easy to follow.
i have one for fooling about cheap and cheerful cost about 90 eur in germany fuselage is ok wings are wobbly and trailing edges waaaay too thick there is no dihedral tail plane same with a 3 S and decent motor it will climb ok but the glide ratio is very poor i have a calypso and its a much better plane with a 2x better glide ratio and flies like a real plane...
hi andrew as mentioned the calypso is about as good as it gets in foamies for bigger intermediate stuff the siren is ok but is not strong enough for sloping if you want 4m+ then rippin in germany is good value for money but involves some work i have 3 from them and am working on a 7 m ventus now from another german maker
Mr. Andrew I look forward to your response today regarding flying a model airplane in 13 mph winds. Thank you, I look forward to hearing from you.

Mine is still going strong, although I tend to avoid stinking hot days, and I use this for slope more than thermal.
Andrew Newton fair enough. I used hot glue ONCE and it melted sitting on the ground before takeoff, never again.
AS soon as i sa the reinforcement, i immediately think of adding proper hinges..better and more durable than tape. more work , sure, but since the parts need reinforcing, why not?
Good morning, is this glider only suitable for flying in thermal winds, or can I also fly it at an altitude of 2,600 metres?
It is OK as a powered plane but not a good thermal glider. Would not be good for high altitude

How long could I fly it with 2200 3s battery?
Being a glider it's not designed to be flown on power continuously. If you're catching thermals the battery would last for hours.
Does it use a T-plug?
Yes but I changed mine to XT60
I knew it ! LOL
You must finish with a one minute flight! Please!

Fanny
Fanny?
not a foam fan at all
Certainly doesn't work very well for these wings.
i have one for fooling about
cheap and cheerful cost about 90 eur in germany
fuselage is ok
wings are wobbly and trailing edges waaaay too thick there is no dihedral
tail plane same
with a 3 S and decent motor it will climb ok but the glide ratio is very poor
i have a calypso and its a much better plane with a 2x better glide ratio and flies like a real plane...
Yes it makes me want to try a decent glider.
hi andrew
as mentioned the calypso is about as good as it gets in foamies
for bigger intermediate stuff the siren is ok but is not strong enough for sloping
if you want 4m+ then rippin in germany is good value for money but involves some work
i have 3 from them and am working on a 7 m ventus now from another german maker
