Thank you for these videos. They are always well done, informative, and interesting. Yes, hydraulics has replaced cable excavators, up to this size and some larger. That said, I have yet to see footage of any large, hydraulic, stripper excavator, that requires a long reach and high bucket capacity, 70 yards, or more, like a dragline, or cable shovel, stripping excavator.

Great video! We have allot of these old electric shovels abandoned in Northern MN at the iron ore mines. On another note I bet you could do a kick ass impersonation of Dan Akroid! I can hear a hint of him when you talk.

Unfortunately in Minnesota most of them were either scrapped or parted out. The parts go primarily overseas where they still run.
Unfortunately most of these would have a hard time reaching the center of the modern larger trucks, much less loading them efficiently.
In Minnesota the 100 ton Lectra Hauls and 120 ton Wabcos that went with these machines are gone or stuffed and mounted too. Too small.

Why does this stuff just get abandoned? I realize that someone must still own the property where this machinery rests, but why didn't they just sell it as scrap?

Haha. This machine is owned by a multi-million dollar mining company so scrap money from this machine would be like pocket change to them, that's why it's still around.
In it's day, this shovel worked with a fleet of Euclid R75's

In Babbitt mn they are currently oprtig a 195b and 280b in iron ore mining
