    Hi Miss Mel, I’m also from South Africa and i was really struggling to get a Geography tutor but i watched your videos and they really helped!!!! I also saw the maps you use are the same as mine so i knew you were from SA.Thank you so much 😊Please continue making more Geography videos they really help!!!

      Because of the coming micronova, declination is moving much farther, and much faster and so declination information is likely incorrect My up-to-date declination is 30 degrees, 15 degrees off from the official declination for my area. but there is still a way to recalibrate magnetic declination using the shadow of sticks recording the path of the sun---rotation of the earth has not yet changed. First stick will show East. Mark it with a sharp stick pushed in. After a few minutes you can mark sun shadow travel where the shadow has moved - Push another stick in to mark West. Lay a straight stick from the E mark to the W mark. Geographic north or True North is 90 degrees from the E-W line. With your compass pointing toward True North, note how far off your compass is now. That is your true up-to-date declination. More on micronova in my 2nd book, Surviving the Micronova: This Train Is on the Tracks is available now.

    Thanks for this. I live on the West coast and my chart reads 020E 1999 (7W). So I think I should multiply 7 by 25 and SUBTRACT in this case because the declination is E and the annual correction is W.

  • @darynf8500

    Thanks for your comprehensive explanation. Just had one question: What happens if your Mean Magnetic Declination is EAST of TN (IE: 23*50' E of TN) and the mean annual change is EAST (6' E of TN)? Do you still ADD to the WEST and SUBTRACT to the EAST?

    • @MelTeaches
      @MelTeaches  2 года назад +3

      As far as I know, yes. I've tried to research it, but I don't seem to come across any difinitive answer. I think the thing to focus on is the mean annual change direction. Add for west, subtract for east, because the anchor point is still true north, regardless of the mean magnetic declination direction. But I'll be honest - I've never seen a calculation like that, and so I could be mistaken. Great question though! Let me know if you come across a solid answer 👍

    • @darynf8500
      @darynf8500 2 года назад +1

      @@MelTeaches Thanks for the response. It's been years since I've done Geography in high school in RSA so this question might deviate from the material students need to pass exam. The add west and subtract east ("mnemonic" - 1:43 ) only applies to west declination from what I can see (South African exams all have west..?).
      I've bushing up on compass nav (and live in Australia with easterly declination) so needed practical usage of adjusting for variation. Found this RUclipsr (Mark L - 101 Magnetic Variation) that lays it out pretty well (and uses the degree function on his calculator to add degrees & minutes as a bonus which might help some of your viewers confirm their calculations). Hope this helps 😁👍.

    West is + and East is - if we go from the meridians of the map to the compass bearing.
    If we go from the compass to the map, it is the other way around.

    So if I do 83' ÷ 60 = 1.383333333 I now know I should add 1°
    So I can do 1.383333333 - 1 = 0.383333333 and than simply do
    0.383333333 × 60 = 23 for the Minutes....

  • @clementineamukelani5459
    @clementineamukelani5459 2 года назад

    From the second example at the final answer how did you get the 25°?

    • @briantalbert
      @briantalbert 2 года назад

      From the 24° 83'. That 83' is actually 1°23'. So the answer becomes 24° + 1°23' or 25° 23'.

    really? 9 minute video on how to adjust for declination?
    step 1: get the angle of magnetic north to true north (you don't have to calculate it - it's given online...)
    step 2: find out if the magnetic north is to the left or right of the true north from where you are on the earth (again, already figured out - all you have to do is look online)
    step 3:
    if it's to the left of true north, move the dial to the right at the angle calculated...
    if it's to the right of true north, move the dial to the left at the angle calculated...
    example: i live in calgary...the position of magnetic north is approx 16 degrees right of true north...therefore i just more the dial to the left 16 degrees (it will be minus because the numbers go up clockwise) - at 300. moving it 16 to the left is just moving to 284...
    all the videos with complicated explanations for a simple calculation...
    oh, and i have a degree in astrophysics so i understand why magnetic north behaves as it does - and it didn't help worth crap because i just overcomplicated it like everyone else...
    just make it easy...
