    Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone were founder members of Games Workshop. In the 1980's they created a phenomenon known as Fighting Fantasy, game books in which you, the reader, were the hero. The first of the series was Warlock of Firetop Mountain which came out in 1982.

    True story, I was there too when it's all started! These Fighting Fantasy books are great memories from my childhood too. :-)))

    My wish is that all of Fighting Fantasy gamebooks were published in the Czech Republic. Perhaps it's true.

    i hope you dont give up on this project, it looks amazing and it is such a wonderful story to tell, gamebooks also seem to be making a big comeback. keep it going, no matter how slow. maybe a kickstarter to start the first 25% of the film, then the next 25% and so on, just so you dont have to come up with everything at once, you could do four goals. important project!!

    Man alive, I loved those books. I was a 9-12 year old girl: the books were for *kids* who liked sword 'n' sorcery fantasy. Seems funny for media today to retrospectively gender the product. We had sexism back then, but we didn't have fully segregated toy aisles in shops.
    Really looking forward to this docco.

    Whoah, hang on - in the top 3 children's book chart from the newspaper, wtf is "The Doom of Darkwood Forest"? I quite prefer that title actually :)

    Man those books were awesome i had warlock of firetop mountain and talisman of death for 20yrs then i had kids they destroyed them ☹️ and a few other of my books.Stinking kids.

    Ian's best work: Deathtrap Dungeon
    Steve's best work: Creature of Havoc and Citadel of Chaos

      But Creature of Havoc didn't work out. There was some paradoxical flaw in it. I can't recall the details but it was like this: Do you have a Golden Sword? No. Turn to page 176. The Demon is impervious to your normal sword. Your adventure is over. But after searching for days on end you discover the only way to get the Golden Sword is to kill the Demon. And that happened more and more often as the series continued.

      @@alfredagain Played through COH around 5 years ago, with the dice and everything. I didn't notice any paradox like that. There are purposeful paradoxes such as passages that keep looping and looping forever, a clever way of telling you game over, but no true mistakes I could find. If you get stuck in a paradox like that, the likely reason is that you're missing a clue to break you out of it. That book is absolutely vicious the way it will send you on doomed quest that lasts a long time but inevitably ends in failure. House of Hell is similar in that way, but not nearly as complex and fleshed out as COH.

      I believe it was a clue that said something like "When you turn to a page that begins with "You cannot see a thing", add 20 to the page number and turn to the result". But as it turned out, when you stumbled onto this page, the clue didn't help. It should have been a different number, like 10. And the only way I found that out was by cheating and thumbing through the pages, despite wanting to play fairly. I only resorted to that after exhausting every other tactic. I know what you mean about the loop thing, especially in that sadistic book. I recall some enemy who was quite easy to kill but the next page he was alive again and attacking you. And the next. And the next. But as for the other I never found evidence to identify it as anything other than a typo. Great idea for a new type of hero in this series, though. And very atmospheric like so many of these books.

      @@alfredagain There is a part in COH where you have to use an amulet to light the way in a dark cavern. You have to add a sum to the current paragraph, which takes you to a secret paragraph. Otherwise, you would miss the opportunity and carry on, oblivious to the fact that you were now on the wrong track. Most of the instances in which you had to use the amulet would specifically prompt you to turn to the secret paragraph, but there was one last part where there was no such prompt from the book. You had to rely upon environmental cues to know when to use the amulet, or else get stuck in an endless network of passages forever. I got stuck and had to read up online to get past that part, which was frustrating. When you look back at it after playing through, however, it seems like a brilliant move to take the gamebook format beyond its boundaries. Steve Jackson always took risks with his books, and the results were not always fruitful, but his best works reach higher peaks than his contemporaries.

      @@holden6104 Yes, that's exactly the part I mean. However, I only got to the frustrating stage. I don't see why they were asking us to step so far out of the circle when, in one book in particular, later on, they put traps into it to stop people from cheating. Something like "If you have a silver amulet turn to page 90. And page 90 began with something like "There are no silver amulets in this story. You've been cheating. Start the adventure again, and play honestly". I've still got my collection so I'll have to have a look at this interesting matter. As for "Deathtrap Dungeon", I agree. It's a classic, although if you roll weak character statistics, you may as well fall on your sword on page 1.

      I'm considering re-running the campaign - any suggestions as to what people would like to see both in the film and as a kickstarter reward?

      * Frank discussion of which ones they think were flops or shoddily done.
      * Final clarification of the fact that, surely, when a weapon increases your _Skill_, what they mean is that it increases your _Attack Strength_, because otherwise it would have no effect on players except those whose _Skill_ has gone below its _Initial_ level by some curse or injury.
      * Favourite monsters, villains, artwork, etc.
      * If you were to go back and change the game rules, what would you change?
      * How was the order of the sections mixed up (but kept connected) in the absence of modern computers that could do it in the click of a mouse? Did you rev up a C64? Did you move bits of paper around on the floor?
