  • The Tornado That Almost Hit 2 Nuclear Bombs - Andover F5 Documentary
The storm that hit on April 26, 1991, is most known for devastating the community of Andover. But the F5 twister also hit parts of Wichita, Haysville, McConnell Air Force Base, and other parts of south-central Kansas.
The National Weather Service had warned that it was setting up to be a very active day. Early that morning, severe storms started in Oklahoma, and by mid-afternoon, tornadoes were being reported from Texas to Nebraska.
Of the more than 50 tornadoes reported that day, 30 were rated an F2 or greater. But the most devastating tornado was the one that hit Andover and south-central Kansas. In south-central Kansas, 19 people died, and 298 people were injured in the storms that day. In Andover, 13 people died at the Golden Spur Mobile Home Park, four died in the Greenwich Heights subdivision of southeast Wichita, one died in Cowley County, and another in Elk County. Two people died in tornadoes in Oklahoma.
The storm hit the Andover area around 6:40 p.m. but had first been reported on the ground nearly an hour earlier near Clearwater. When it finally lifted after being on the ground for 46 miles, it was near El Dorado.
Haysville was hit around 6:20 p.m. when the tornado was a strong F2, and then it strengthened. The tornado was still an F3 when it struck McConnell Air Force Base four minutes later. It destroyed 102 base housing units and nine major facilities, including the base hospital. In all, 16 people were injured on base. The tornado narrowly missed 10 B1-B bombers that were lined up. Two of them had nuclear warheads on them.
The storm continued to gain strength as it hit the Greenwich Heights subdivision in the area near Pawnee and Webb, leveling several well-built homes and strengthening to an F4 as it continued toward Andover. At its largest, it was three-quarters of a mile wide.
From there, the tornado continued to track to the northeast. It began to move into Andover at 6:43 p.m. and intensified to an F5. The town suffered the biggest loss of life that night.

I was caught in this tornado not once, but twice! I lived and went to middle school in school in Haysville. When the sirens went off, my dad panicked and put us in the car and headed east. We ended up going to pick up my stepmom on the northeast side of town. I ended up in the basement of a McDonald’s with a huge gash on my face from a massive hailstone that required 5 stitches to close… Our home in Haysville was completely unaffected by the storm. The car was totaled. Panicked people make poor decisions. Have a plan ready, and practice it! Especially with kids and pets. Stay safe out there ❤

I've seen a tornado in Indiana when i was a 4 year old. We didn't have a basement but our neighbors did. A tornado was coming down our street as we ran to the neighbors house. Dad had my hand but my feet weren't on the ground. Dad said the tornado was almost on us and it was trying to suck me up. That was wild. I'll never forget it. There was damage but nothing like this footage. I couldn't imagine what these poor folk saw or experienced. It just happens so quick...

Tinker AFB has been hit multiple times (most notably twice in 1948 and again in 1999) and Redstone Arsenal near Huntsville, AL was hit by an F3 on 4/3/74. IIRC the 2011 Good Friday EF4 in St. Louis hit the National Guard base there as well. There are probably others but those are the first that come to mind.

I love your content, one small issue. I feel that you have too much of a light hearted voice like in an ad advertising a new movie coming out in fall. Just from listening to other tornado documentaries I personally find it more appealing when the narrator has more of a lower toned voice. Now your voice is perfect but don't make it as happy and light hearted. You're talking about a killer, a monster, a life destroyer and I am in no way trying to tell you how to do your job but this just feels too light hearted to be talking about a killer. Please don't take this the wrong way it's just a bit of constructive criticism.
