- Duke Evans filmed six and a half minutes of the 1991 Wichita/Andover tornado as it crossed into Butler County and did major damage in Andover. At the time, the video was considered among the highest quality tornado footage ever. This is Evans' footage in its entirety. (Video used with permission of Duke Evans)

I grew up in tornado alley terrified of storms to the point I passed out as a kid in the basement as they passed over. I read about this tornado and a story about a boy who was killed and it changed my view on them. I decided to study and confront my fears and thought what can be done to prevent deaths in these storms. Meteorology became my passion and still is.
That is awesome, good 4u!
This guy was WAY ahead of his time filming this tornado. Still, lots of people move the camera at everything but the tornado, scream, cuss, film the ground. This guy was perfectly tracking it, great zoom shoots. Remarkable.
There was one yesterday that hit through here
@@novaproductionyt671 Watched it live thru Ryan Hall and Reed Timmer. Incredible..and devestating. Glad everyone was more or less ok.
Not exactly, in 1974, a high school student filmed the Xenia Ohio tornado on a super 8 camera, from that film Dr Fijita (the Fijita tornado rating scale) was able to analyze the severity and multi vorties/funnels and the ground damages....yada yada)
Don’t forget, say it’s a violent tornado a million times 🤦🏾♂️
And he used a camcorder, which is the only video recording medium I'll ever use. I don't even own a cell phone - no thanks!
The year is 2021. Almost 2022. This is still some of the best footage ever captured, both for audio (no screaming and minimal drunken punditry) and video (amazing video of a mature tornado and a good chunk of its life cycle). I hereby nominate Duke Evans for best picture, 1991 to 2021.
@@DennisJordan.com. I agree. He is a professional though. I nominate Duke Evans for best amature footage.
No F-bombs either, which are all over the place in current-day videos.
What about the amazing footage of the 2022 Andover tornado? Oh wait...
@@ChimpFromSpace The 2022 footage from the Andover City Hall east camera is damn good, but yet again no commentary, no screaming (love ya Reed but its just too much) and no swearing, just good footage.
The shit we saw fleeing Golden Spur straight toward this tornado…. Dude.
This footage is 30 years old and still amazing. If you’ve never seen a tornado up close they are so beautiful and mesmerizing for such destructive forces.

There is nothing beautiful about tornadoes. Get real.

All kinds of adjectives to use to describe this tornado; and, "beautiful", would never be used. 😶
This video is rare. As in, it's one of the few large and up close tornado videos where the cameraman isn't being overly dramatic.
Yes as in not having the common sense of a garden slug to get out of danger
My dad used to video tape my baseball games like that, just remained quiet.
@@blockaderunner Hey Captain Antillies that's actually kind of sad and chilling
Somebody said shit in the background.
Well I mean I would be over dramatic if I was watching my town getting destroyed.
I love how in the past cameras could zoom in 20× or more and still have the same quality
Not to me but to you. There is a difference between classy & none classy people. My uncle still uses VCR and old tv. He still wears 1990 underwater and it's ancient😂
Those were the days before digital zoom so when you zoomed in it wasn't all pixelated like it is now. With optical zoom you get a clear magnified view showing all the detail.
1991. I had one of those 12 pack of cans size black box cameras with the flip up and down black and white view finder screen that you didn't have to put your eye to and it held a full size VHS tape that you had quick zoom in and out buttons by the record button. It was like a VCR. You could watch footage recorded in the view finder. I wish I still had one of those monster cameras. You felt like you worked for the news with it on your shoulder. Ha
@@donovanblueboy2612 Underwater? You mean, underwear? lol
My parents had a 1985 JVC Camera with this kind of quality. It could zoom in 1-2 miles.
That's the most violent close-up rotation ever caught on film. This video will forever be the measuring stick to all tornado videos.
Ever? No. Many tornado videos out there showing up-close violent rotation with much better resolution than this one.
That was the longest six and a half minutes I've seen in a long time. Can't comprehend going through that.
I just subscribe to your RUclips channel ok 👌
Dude
Hey 👋 there dude how are you doing right now I’m just wondering ok 👌
Dude lol 😂
The 1991 Andover tornado was at its highest intensity an F5 tornado. It was 600 feet wide, with the tornado being on the ground for 46 miles and wreaking havoc over Kansas for just over 60 minutes. Sadly 17 people were killed. The tornado crossed over the McConnell Air Force Base and just missed a row of B-1 USAF bombers costing about $400 million for each jet. There were about 25 B-1 bombers at the McConnell AFB at that time. The tornado passed over the west side of the airbase and just missed the hangars and line of B-1 bombers. The rest of the airbase was hit hard to the tune of about $60 million dollars.
What would you do if the tornado 🌪 ever hits in your aera I’m just wondering ok 👌
And the cost of a human life, without measure! Unreplaceable unlike aircraft and buildings!

Doesn't matter that this was 25 years ago. This still stands as some of the best tornado footage ever. I remember the Andover monster and this footage is one of the reasons why. The other is the footage from the barracks as it went through McConnell AFB.

I agree! The rotation on this tornado is very violent! That thing would shredded you to pieces bro! That is sick!
Both iconic.
Indeed. I remember that day, because of the footage on Headline News, from about 4:16, with the maxed out wedge and the houses in the foreground, with house debris in the background. Low precipitation, lateral vortices, high contrast make it a truly iconic tornado in a time when amateur videography was coming into its heyday, and making events like this commonplace on the news.
I have a question for you have you ever seen a tornado 🌪 in person I’m just wondering I hope 🤞 you have a great 👍 daY.
It's wild to see how far away some of the vortices were from the main funnel.
Almost makes it look as if it were grabbing and throwing objects. Definitely an indicator of an extremely violent tornado.
The footage of the tornado behind those houses as it chugs along is so iconic.
My body was getting all tensed up as it appeared to be about to rip up those houses, and coming straight at the camera. In 3-d, though, it must have been 100 yards, or more "behind" the houses. Wow! Awesome camera work. Steady as a rock.
@BohnJoi hey 👋 there how are you doing this morning I’m just wondering ok 👌
I feel very bad for those people who died during the 1991 tornado 🌪 Warning ⚠️
Dude
Biggest nightmare of my life. Have frequent dreams of a tornado dropping out of nowhere, and heading for the house, desperately trying to get people in the basement.
More than 30 years later, another tornado has struck Andover.
Almost on the same day, too.
That's why I'm here looking. My grandmother died in the 1991 tornado. Luckily it seems no one has died from this one so far, but it's still only morning after.
Both of which occurred on a Friday.
Also an extremely clear photogenic one too with some of the wildest clearest footage you will ever see. Another one that will go down in storm chasing history like this one did.
But hey. It wasn’t as bad. The recent one seems way less powerful but much more beautiful. These big blob tornadoes are just mean looking. They’re filled with debris and huge. It’s scary seeing something so large spin so fast.
Great camera work. Calm.
No overselling talk like RUclips storm chasers.
IDK how anyone could give this a thumbs down. Best tornado footage ever in my opinion.
this video, which is incredible by the way, made me realize how much unnecessary noise todays storm chasers make with their mouth.
@Aiden Pacl b.s. a millenial will for sure run their youtube mouth if they even see a tornado.
wayang ceblon
No doubt. They’re so busy saying, “It sounds like....” you can’t hear it for yourself.
I love watching Reed Timmers videos, but dam, please shut the heck up. They yell and scream when they aren't even near a tornado to make it sound so bad where they are, its not going to stop the tornado or stop it from hitting people.
If you want to watch modern storm chasing without the obnoxious yelling, I would suggest watching Pecos Hank. He easily has the best content on tornadoes on all of youtube.
So powerful and so much better without all the hysterical screaming of most modern chasers. Great zoom work and perspective. Of all the modern chasers Pecos Hank does a great job of informative, calm commentary even when he is in danger.
Who else is looking down at those vehicles and thinking to themselves where the hell has time gone??
What a difference in who is behind that camera than what people are like today. It's like everyone today saw the movie Twister and went from there. Respect to the person who filmed this for being calm, cool and collective 😎
Methinks you'd like watching "Pecos Hank". Little commentary and as cool as a cucumber, plus a knack for getting top-grade vid footage of tornadoes.
I've seen many tornado vids here on RUclips but this one remains my favorite. Despite the tragedies that occurred from this tornado, this is my favorite tornado of all time. My hat goes off to Duke Evans for the terrific job he did filming this.
I bet he never had a thought of jumping in his car and chasing the tornado. Smart man.
Love the false interest in the deaths. "Despite the tragedies that occurred.." Love it. Just love it.

@@tomfisher9089 You do realize that Evans was over a mile away from the tornado and was never in its path, right? He was, actually, relatively safe all things considered. In addition, he was a retired Army meteorologist and was able to judge his safety according to rotation/direction of the storm and made sure he was no more than 30 seconds from his basement in the unlikely case that the tornado did turn towards him. Take your uneducated trolling somewhere else.
@MRFANCYPANTS777 The F5 Andover tornado killed 17 people. All total, 21 people died in the April 26th, 1991 tornado outbreak.
There were apparently 21 people killed in this twister, 17 of them in Andover.
A lot of people talk about Moore or Joplin, but I'll always remember this and Jarrell as being some of the original monster tornadoes. I can still remember the footage they showed from the toll booth of this thing on the weather channel back in the day and it's always been an iconic tornado. This footage is incredible.
The three tornadoes from the 1990s that were probably the most intense are Andover, Jarrell, and Bridge Creek. They were all terrifying.
Especially when it sucked up an entire floral green house and the tornado briefly turned a lovely shade of pink!
TeKnoVKNG23 no one was able to record the one that I was in in 1973. A day I never forget. Especially if there’s any kind of wind with a storm. I’m still terrified. We were in our house when it was destroyed. Thank God we survived
@Blue Sanitarium Jarrell does take the cake when it comes to the intensity of the damage. There was one tornado near Harper, Kansas on May 12, 2004 that practically did Jarrell like damage.
This was a bad tornado for sure and the damage and loss of life were sobering. But if this was King Kong, Jarrell was Godzilla.
This is the tornado that made me fascinated with tornadoes. They showed this clip on the news when I was a kid living in San Francisco. #nostalgia
It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost 30 years since that tornado. My sister and her family live in Wichita and their oldest daughter was visiting a friend in Andover earlier that day. Their house was destroyed. I visited Andover with my folks about a week after the tornado and was astounded by the destruction. A car was wrapped around a stripped tree like aluminum foil. One house was completely removed from its foundation but the flowers in the front flower bed were blooming and completely intact. A convenience store that I had visited exactly one year before the tornado was blown away.
OMG what are those flowers made of!! It's like the tornado just decided, nah, they're too pretty, i'll let them live.
That has to be THE most incredible shot of a Tornado I've ever seen not to mention, Mr Evans also the CALMEST & QUIETEST! wow. He should get an Award for that footage!
I keep looking for Bill Paxton to come flying down the road in his red Dodge truck! lol

This is an extraordinarily beautiful recording of an exquisite wedge tornado. I was transfixed by its fierce beauty. Once, when I was 10 years old living in Excelsior, MN during the summer of 1965, I saw a very similar wedge. This brought the wonder and amazement of that sighting back for me. Thankyou. If you do some research the summer of 1965 brought a slew of very powerful twisters to Minnesota.
Definitely the best footage of the Andover tornado - this guy caught the tornado at its strongest and that churning motion is incredible. The air force base footage caught the tornado when it was at F2/F3 stage.
To give some distance perspective on an amazing video: Evans filmed from the Terradyne CC. The five houses you see in the later half of the video are on Glendevon Drive, and are about 0.3 miles from Evans shooting point. The tornado would be entering the Golden Spur mobile home park about the time the tornado is behind the 4th house from the right (4:38 on the video), which would put it about 1.1 miles from Evans (the damage path is clearly seen on the Google Earth historical 1991 aerial). So even though it looks like it is right behind the houses, it is roughly twice as far from the houses as Evans was.
That explains the sudden and dense amount of debris circling the funnel. Oh, those poor people. R.I.P.
scottp1001: Thank you for that information. I was wondering how far Duke was from the tornado and also how far it was behind that row of houses.
Damn thats big as hell
I had ALWAYS wondered how far away the tornado was behind those houses. I looked at Glendevon Drive on Google Earth, found the five houses, and found Golden Spur (now called Andover Estates) mobile home park. Everything checks out. Thanks so much for the info!

Dude, they can indeed change directions. In fact, some chasers have lost that bet the hard way. And with a monster of this size, you better grab those gutsy buttcheeks and run like hell for the nearest shelter, since a beast of the EF5 range can move at 70mph while making those changes.

Actually that tornado really did happen on a Friday. The TV weather people were warning people all week to lookout for bad storms that Friday. It's kind of amazing how far in advance they knew that the conditions would be just right for big tornadoes. I remember it well because the Andover tornado passed by within a few hundred feet of me.
Old footage and photos of tornadoes are honestly so much scarier looking than modern stuff and I don't know why. Maybe it's the darker quality of it that makes it look more menacing, but it's just so amazing to see
I agree with that
Man, whenever you see those horizontal vortices shooting out of a funnel, you know it's gonna be bad.
Yep notable others with this phenomenon were Moore/Oklahoma City, OK 5/3/99 and Tuscaloosa, AL 4/27/11.
Both every bit as horrible as this one.

To me the scariest tornado I ever saw on RUclips and on live tv was the El Reno Tornado. I was a big fan of Tim Samaras and loved watching his shows on the Weather Channel. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. I ended-up staying an extra week or two in Wichita and we had a huge drive through claims operation in an old car dealership. We totaled-out 70% of the cars. The hail was massive. I remember people talking about the Andover tornado too. Many people I met and had claims with were from Andover and many had lost everything in the tornado. They were quite traumatized.

This is great video for 1991. Especially since no one is screaming in the background.
Black folk would’ve been screaming “world star”
Of course there's no screaming. These are macho men at a country club spitting in the face of approaching death. How dare that rat bastard storm ruin my golf game. I rule the world doncha know.
@@GenuwineG And FOLK like you would be running and screaming like little girls. Always make sure you turn EVERYTHING into a racial slur you asshole. This is why this country is going down the shitter.
Well its not moving toward them so why be afraid... We were built tougher back then. now were made of mcdonalds and snowflakes.
@Tom Fisher Communism via the Democratic Party and illegal immigration is why this country is going down the shitter.
I lost a beloved aunt and uncle in this tornado. Myself I'm a survivor of the May 2011 Joplin Missouri tornado. I saw things that day I never ever want to see again.
Condolences for your losses and to the Glory of God for your survival.
Use your experiences to educate others of the danger and teach them the means of survival.
Godspeed.............................
God bless you.
Sorry for your losses, God bless you.
GOD HAVE MERCY ON YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!
Sorry for your loss.
lots of great videos over the years, yet the Andover tornado remains my favorite. Even before this video came out, the air base footage was incredible. I say that with the utmost respect to anyone who lost loved ones, homes, businesses etc.
If the title didn't say 1991, I don't think many people would believe this video was shot 33 years ago. I'm a tornado video chasing nut and I've seen hundreds, if not more, insane tornado videos. This is one of the best I have ever seen..
4:30 is about when the tornado hits the trailer park. You can see several mobile homes being thrown at about 4:48 on the left side and right around 5:00 at the top right about 500 feet in the air.
My God that is one of the most violent tornadoes I’ve ever seen! That thing is as dangerous as tornadoes come. This video is also as close to a tornado as I would ever want to be, especially a violent tornado. The hail at the end of this video almost seems like a blessing compared to that close call!
The sight of this storm passing very close to the row of well constructed homes between the author n the storm is awesome!
One of many events us Kansans, have never forgotten...hell everyone in this state can tell you where they were during the Andover tornado!
It’s crazy when I was a kid probably in 2006 I stumbled upon a whole book and vhs video I believe my parents had from this. My dad said that was one of the worst things in Kansas. So you’re right even me as a kid was hearing about it lol. I remember this specific video on the vhs tape so cool to see it again.
The moments when the wind lays off the mic and you can hear the roar even from that distance only add to how amazing this footage is.
I've seen all the tornadoes on the internet, this is the Best one, by far, Great video, the Best , hands down, good work Duke !!!
Wow, nice to actually hear the tornado, without the idiots screaming.
LOL, idiots screaming--->> You mean terrified people who think death is imminent? Then I'd be an idiot too. ;)
ay first i would be like how cool then i would realize my life is at stake i would be screaming like omg omg omg :O im an idiot toooo
*DUUUUKE!!!*
Or fake sound effects or musical overlays.
I know right? Good video.
Just hearing the rumble imagine that monster running over the top of you while in the shelter. People that have never been in a tornado have no idea how terrifying and loud they are. It leaves a scare on your memory forever.
You said it! I witnessed an EF4 when I was a kid and I was ABSOLUTELY mortified! It's a sight that you NEVER forget! 🌪 ☠ 😔
I can't believe this week I have seeing so many video of tornadoes (even I watch Into The Storm after) but THIS is my favorite video! Stand still, not shaky, and I could see the tornadoes perfectly.
Incredible video! And, as stated below, nice to NOT hear a bunch of unnecessary screaming most of today's chasers do.
This tornado looks a lot like the 2011 Tuscaloosa tornado.
agreed
Yes!
very similar in extreme vertical motion.
+Chad Jordan Were you in either tornado? I apologize if I have offended you in any way.😰
+Chad Jordan Okay!😃😃
This was right after it sliced its way through McConnell AFB. Hard to believe this was the fourth F5 of the 1990's at the time after we went the final half of the 1980's without one. The last F5 in the 80's was Niles, Ohio-Wheatland, Pennsylvania on 5/31/1985. Three of the next four F5's hit in Kansas: Both the Hesston and Goessel events on 3/13/1990, and Andover on 4/26/1991 with the other F5 being the infamous Plainfield, Illinois event on 8/28/1990. I was 6 months and 2 days old when this beast hit. After this, the next tornado to be rated 5 in Kansas wouldn't happen for another 16 years, 8 days when the first EF5 hit Greensburg on 5/4/2007.
.
Very knowledgeable you are, I grew up in Newton and have an Atmo degree, these dates are cemented in my mind..
Matthew Kowal my dad remembers this tornado vividly. He spent his whole summer helping to rebuild the AFB
May 3 1999 would beg to differ. While officially an f4 a lot of survivors would tell you that it looked more like an f5
@@shannoncoons5093 Bridge Creek had the highest wind speeds ever recorded on Earth. That thing was the maximum end of F5.
Hands down top 5 tornado vids! I've watched hundreds maybe thousands and this one is amazing! Thank u sir
This video truly shows what it means to be a storm chaser capturing a tornado on your camera.
I wanted to go out and chase it. My wife wouldn't let me because of our baby girl. Probably the best advice I've ever received....
These are needed... It makes you look inward and hopefully get a look at your ways before and definitely after its over , if you survive it.....FACTS!!!!!
WOW!, much more awesome and devastating than what is shown in the news reporter chase of 1991. Its on a video about tornadoes. I would be filling my britches if i was that close to one.
One of the most terrifying sounds I've ever heard. What a monster! And I agree with everyone that says that footage such as this without storm chasers talking is far more interesting
Andover had a repeat today sadly
God, I was 10 years old and remember this so hard. I was so glad to leave Wichita ten years ago! Every spring was hyper-ventilation season.
Where you at now girlfriend?
I hear ya girl, you were tough to stay there that long!!
@@stormblade2510 you fuck off you moron! I didnt even mean it like your twisted mind thinks. Pervert! She said she was no longer in Wichita and im asking where she relocated. Get it now MORON?
Elvis dinkel Dinkel
Why would you address someone as “girlfriend.”
really?
@@stormblade2510 you're such a dud!
This footage is 31 yrs old and is probably the best video I've seen of a giant angry F5 !
I live a few miles away, and remember brick houses wiped off the foundation. Wow.
Mankind: We have mastered civilization.
Mother Nature: Hold my beer.
Hey 👋 there I have a question for you have you ever seen a tornado 🌪 in person I’m just wondering ok 👌 Dude
@@dpflack1744 massive emoji overuse, and i have seen 38
The rotation of this storm is BEYOND savage! Can’t see how anything could be left standing.
DAMN, that is superior footage. It is clear enough that I could see the vortices at the leading edge rotating clockwise while they were circling the main funnel counterclockwise. The trees and cars that it ejected out the trailing edge of the vortex shows how much power a tornado has. When the hail started-thankfully briefly-I thought the tornado was changing directions.I live in Tornado Alley and have been in several hail cores from tornados, but haven't been hit. The hail core usually has winds of 60-70 mph driving the hail almost horizontally.
I remember seeing this for the very first time on tv when they had this tornado outbreak. The images were nothing I had ever seen before. I think this has to be one of the earliest modern captures of a tornado. Nothing like it was ever recorded.
