    This is the 4th video in 5 minuits I watch about how to wear a Plaid. And yes. It looks like Scots are so badass they don´t even need to stand up to get into their Kilt. Also the Plaid is probably the most impressiv pice of clothing I´ve ever seen. "What a nice looking cloth. And now it´s a manskirt. And now a Backpack. And now a cloke. And now a Tent. And when it´s expecialy windy on the Highlands i´m preaty sure the old Scots went flying with that thing..." Now i want one too... looks comfy...

      Kilts [or, Cilts] have been worn all over the world long BEFORE Scotland, the tartan is also OLDER than Scotland, also patterns like ARAN is Spanish/Portuguese..
      first known kilts: 12,000 years before Scotland... but don'y take my word for it... RESEARCH IT!
      My opinion: LEARN YOUR HISTORY!

      Too bad the " skirt " isnt Scottish...you guys basically wore a toga ... the skirt which is what the modern kilt is ...was not worn by Scots till about the 18th century . The Galician wore it in 400 ad .... rhe tartan authority had admitted as much ...so...😏

    Amazing what you can do with a sheet of fabric. So much of traditional clothing the world over consists of different ways of wearing sheets of material in all sorts of sizes and configurations.

      This culture was associated with crofting in the Highlands when people worked and lived on the land and needed a Blanket to sleep, carry things and shelter from the elements. It has nothing to do with Ireland.

    I can verify the pockets will hold a six pack of beer each side. I did that once camping when I was wondering around one night from campsite to campsite. Started six full in one side put the empties in the other side as I finished them. Then headed back to get a new six and put bug spray on my legs.

    I think the fabric I used is about 2meters X 7meters (7'x21'). This is a rough estimate. Just make sure it is double wide; and that can range anywhere from 60" to 80" in a fabric store. The length can be any preference you wish. I don't mind the folding, so I go from 5 to 7 meters for the legnth.You can go a lot shorter. I have made a folded kilt from as small as 6 feet of fabric(with not many folds on back). I hope this helps! Kilt On!

      @onestooge  9 лет назад +8

      +Dan McNeill Depending on the floor or surface you fold the pleats on, I found it will sometimes snag on the belt if you lay it first. I have friends that do that, but it just goes back to what I said on the video, it is all a personal preference. I have a belt that has a hook clasp, and I am guaranteed to have it snag on a pleat or two. Experiment & let us know what works for you! Thanks for asking! Kilt On.

      Очень познавательно! Всегда думал, что килт - это просто мужская юбка, но ваше видео приятно удивило и открыло глаза на правду =) Но есть пара вопросов касательно исторического применения:
      1. В рукопашном бою на мечах эта одежда не сковывала движения?
      2. Получается что противнику очень легко ухватиться за килт и притянуть носителя под удар своего оружия?

      Понятие "рукопашный бой" в русском языке имеет значение не только драки на кулаках, но и вообще ближнего контактного боя, а там не важно что используется - хоть огнестрельное оружие.

    • @onestooge
      @onestooge  6 лет назад +1

      Sometimes it will slightly shift when folding it, so the center might not match up on the back end of the process. Outdoors is especially hard to keep it straight. Thanks for asking.

    This is FASCINATING! Do more, please! I never knew kilts were merely cleverly folded pieces of fabric - I always thought they were sewn - nor did I have a clue how versatile they are.

    • @onestooge
      @onestooge  5 лет назад

    I have purchased my grand kilt, Irish Revenge tartan. I am learning to pleat it and wear it. I found your video great for showing what I need tolearn to m2kq th3 pockets but your hands move so fdast I can not duplicate it even after many reviews.

    • @seankinney8567
      @seankinney8567 4 года назад

      TO FOLD A POCKET:
      1. Grab the front inner corner of the top layer. Run your finger back along the edge, about 18 inches (45cm).
      2. Fold the two points together. It will make a “V” of fabric. You can see this clear on my first pocket fold. At 04:35 of the video.
      3. Take both points and tucks them into your belt at the back. Push them into very well between your back and the tartan. This will form a long pocket running down your side.
      - Basically you are just pinching the front edge, and part from the middle edge and pushing them into your belt. The “V” fold is the pocket. To make a smaller pocket, just go back around the bottom edge less.
      I hope this helps.

    Wow .... I have not seen a kilt folded before:.. why so much material.... kilts sold on hangers are they less material ? They look like they are less material. Love the kilt.

    • @onestooge
      @onestooge  4 года назад +1

      The average great kilt was 5 to 7 meters. The longer the material, the more types of folds you can do, as demonstrated in the later part of the video. If you only want the bottom skirting, than it is a lot less material. Your perception is correct, the modern kilts have much less material. Thanks for watching. #KiltOn!

      Thanks for asking. I have many friends that do wear kilts everyday (here in Los Angeles), but mostly the modern versions with pockets, not this Great Kilt. I don't know of any professionals that wear them daily. A lot of my friend and clan celebrate "Freedom Friday" and wear them every Friday. The family back in the homeland normally only wear them to formal occasions, and family gatherings. Most of them wear the modern version to be honest as it is faster and easier; and depending on the material, cheaper. We only wear the Great Kilts when we go to events like the Highland Games, a Celtic festival or a Renaissance Festival.

      Thanks for watching. I made the music by putting together a melody of some of our favorite traditional bagpipe & penny whistle music from the 1600s to 1800s. I had Christiane Cargill Kinney, my wife, a super talented musician(check out her her eon RUclips) play out the tunes into a midi file, and I produced them with appropriate instrumentation and arrangements.
      The song order is: Balmoral Castle, The Muckin' O' Geordie's Byre, The Kilt is My Delight, Cutty's Wedding, and Cion A' Bhuntàta. Thanks for asking. #KiltOn!

    Amazing, thanks for showing. I have always wondered how it was done. It's so minimalist, uncomplicated and practical; but isn't what you've folded really a plaid?

    • @jeffhintz8904
      @jeffhintz8904 7 лет назад +3

      Yes, great kilt is one of the common names for a belted plaid, as it was a precursor to the modern kilt.

    • @onestooge
      @onestooge  Год назад +1

      @neilbain8736 All kilts are a plaid, the term tartan is applied once it is registered to a specific Clan or family.
      A plaid is a crossbarred pattern piece of cloth.
      A tartan is an associated or registered pattern of plaid cloth.
      A kilt is either of the above folded into a type of knee-length non-bifurcated skirt with pleats at the back.
      This pattern is a registered plaid, so it is not a plaid, but a tartan. Once folded, it is a kilt.

    I got my kilt yesterday and tried it out today. I'm glad to have a kilt now that wasn't invented in England, like the usual "modern kilt." I think I'm going to like it, but it's going to take some experimenting. I thought that this video was really good, and I know I couldn't have done without it, but it's a lot harder than I thought it would be. It would be helpful if the video showed what Sean is doing behind his back, first with the pockets and then with reaching around to bring the kilt over the shoulder. One thing I'm wondering: Sean does the pockets first and then continues with the traditional over-the-shoulder business. Are the pockets an important step here, or is that just one option?

    • @onestooge
      @onestooge  9 лет назад +1

      +Don Ulin It is just an option. I like having them personally. Pockets or not, the folds stand on their own. Great suggestion. If I make another one, I will try a 2 camera set up. The over the shoulder fold is nothing more than me feeling for the bottom of the outer layer, and working my way around the bottom close to the center, then pulling it up and over. Each hand does this, and they meet in the shoulder. I hope that helps. #KeepOnKilting

      If it makes you feel any better, Thomas Rawlinson did not invent the little kilt, he only introduced it to his workers (maybe). The little kilt had existed before Rawlinson was born.

    • @donulin2410
      @donulin2410 8 лет назад +1

      Thanks for that reassurance. Thomas, if you could provide some evidence for that early date of the modern kilt design, I would be more convinced. Your credibility as any kind of an interpreter of history is certainly not helped any by your use of the confederate flag (the banner to protect slavery) as your icon.

    • @thomasbarber5061
      @thomasbarber5061 8 лет назад

      Well to begin with, this flag was not the banner to protect slavery, it was the banner that represented the men fighting for the Confederacy. Your average Confederate soldier would not have owned slaves, and many were actually against slavery. My ancestors on my dad's side fought for the South, so I like to represent my heritage, and the flag looks pretty cool. There was a painting (I'll have to find which one and link you to it in a later post) from around 1713 if I'm not mistake on the year, it showed a noble of some sort wearing the phillabeg. The phillabeg itself is just what you get when you don't sew the two lengths of cloth together, seeing as the old mills usually produced single width cloth and then sewed it selvedge to selvedge to make the feileadh-mor, the halved type of kilt was most likely tried long before there were paintings of it. It's more likely that Rawlinson just popularized it for industrial work as it was much for practical for working around heavy machinery than a great kilt.

      @seankinney8567 5 лет назад +1

      I am 5'10". The fabric I used is about 2meters X 7meters (7'x21'). This is a rough estimate. I got mine from Sport Kilt, and I am not sure of their basic size. #Kilt On!

    Do you find a thicker material tends to be easier to work with? I've been wearing a kilt regularly for the last little while but I've just purchased a couple of patterns from a local fabric land. I can make my pleats and it does tend to look quite sharp but I find the fabric being so thin (it's hot here currently) is rather hard to adjust. Additionally, do you have a method of taking off the great kilt if you wanted to wear it the next day or would you just refold your pleats and start over?
    Thanks for the very informative video!

    • @onestooge
      @onestooge  Месяц назад

      I am currently in southern California, so I tend to go with a thin material. I have had no trouble adjusting mine, but I do recommend a fabric softener, it makes it more pliable for the different folds. When I take it off, it depends if it is going to be worn the next day. If I am at a festival and will wear it daily: I lay down, or across a table, and drop my belt, it allows for the pleats to stay in place. The next morning, I just sit back down on where I dropped and unfolded it, then refold it, belt it, and go. Just like in the video but in reverse. If I am putting it up for storage, I just pop the belt and let it fall to the floor, then fold it up on the set, as to not get any wrinkles. Thanks for asking; and for watching. #KiltOn!
