Really great stuff on the most underappreciated campaign of the war. Even Ken Burns glosses over Vicksburg. I remember when I visited Little Big Horn and could see the terrain- it made all the difference in understanding. Thanks for taking us on your trip with you and showing us the sights of the battle.
My dad stayed in a hotel in Vicksburg last night. He’s a power line worker (lineman for short) and his crew is down there to help begin the rebuilding process and get power back on in the region.
@@rogerjohnson9466 appreciate the kind words. He was down there after hurricane Katrina too. He said the pictures never did the justice for how bad it was.
Loved the video. You mentioned in a recent reaction that you'd like to improve your storytelling ability. This video is a clear example of how your editing and storytelling have evolved greatly since the beginning of the channel. Keep up the great work and it's always a great fun for me to learn from your original content. Hug from Portugal
Love your videos Man. I’m not sure if you take comment requests, but if so, you really really need to check out Montemayor’s 3 part series on the battle of midway told from the Japanese perspective. I will say they are rather lengthy videos but it’s expertly paced and packed with information. I have already seen it but I’d love to hear your take on it because I know you almost always have some really cool extra facts to share
Hopefully you react to the Great Northern War Extra history series soon. Potential history has some great civil war related stuff you can check out as well. Keep up the good work!
As I sit here watching this all that I can think about is that if I had enough money to support your Game channel, I would request a Cav unit to help your CSS and having them blast through the union lines.
I understand why other historians recognize this campaign as a great campaign, but can we at least acknowledge that Grant wasn't exactly facing the cream of the crop that was left of the Confederacy and that he had failed implementing this campaign before.
Most people acknowledge it and I’m sure he’ll get to it. Pemberton had no business being in command at such a critical moment. The Confederate troops were mostly veteran troops having fought previously at Shiloh, Corinth, and Iuka, but with idiotic leadership even great soldiers can’t do much.
@@ryanburns6780 I would also add poorly supplied. Yes, most of the time, the Confederacy was poorly supplied, but even by normal Confederate standards, Pemberton's army might as well been throwing crab apples at the Union army under Grant.
Your comment mentioned that Grant had failed before. I assume you are referring to his campaign in late 1862 to take the city from the North. That assault was based on West Point textbooks. After that campaign failed Grant decided to look for a new plan. The various tasks performed in the Winter of 1863 were basically feints to confuse the enemy and keep his army busy. Grant knew that when spring came the real campaign would begin. Admiral Porter said that the Army could not take Vicksburg without the assistance of the Union Navy in late 1862. Those words were spot on. Grant wanted to find the dry ground south of the city so he could operate and maneuver to defeat Pemberton. His plan broke every rule in the military book at that time, but Grant had to gamble. The stakes were high. Grant either captures Vicksburg or he will probably lose his command. I would agree that the Confederate Commanders were not the strongest, but they still might have stopped Grant. One final note, it gets overlooked, but Grant’s army trusted him from top to bottom. Pemberton’s army did not trust him.
@@johnfleet235 All that still doesn't take away from the fact that Grant was facing a poorly equipped and inexperienced army during that campaign. Grant also wasn't exactly the best tactician, the Overland campaign showed that.
Correction: Charles Dana was Assistant Secretary of WAR, not of the Navy.

My 2nd great grandfather died working on Grant's canal, at least he has a head stone in the Vicksburg national cemetery. That's more than most got.
you can practically feel the heat and humidity! can't imagine what it would be like fighting in those conditions
So stifling you die just from digging! Ick!

I have to check that out too. Does it deal with the string of executions in the wake of Midway of captured soldiers by anchor and by axe?
This was excellent! Every episode of these are awesome, both to hear, and see. I have visited Vicksburg three times.
Vicksburg is one of the campaigns that interests me most, so really enjoying these. Many thanks from the UK

Like when you show the maps, etc. before showing the actual place. Things flatten out a lot in reality.

Man. Hi stakes plan. And why didn’t the defenders know their guns couldn’t aim low enough?!
I wondered that too. How did they not test that?
Is that cicadas or feedback?!
