I’m restoring an m40, I took the previous paint completely off as it was already pretty badly restored, now I have to repaint it, I bought day 1944 paint, I tried on the shell to see if it would hold on, but it doesn’t, I can scratch it off with my nails. Do you know if I have to use any sort of primer or what I should do to make it work?
Yes I can tell the difference the m35 has folded edges and the air vents are separate pieces the m 40 has folded edges but the air vents are stamped on the m42 has stamped air vents and the edges are not folded
Great work... As it is an M42, (I do not mean to be rude or picky) , the color should be "Field Grey" instead of what seems to be "Apple Green" (as used in early M35s). Also I am sure you realised that the chinstrap has been mounted with the black-side on the wearer's skin... and it should be the other way around. I could also suggest the drawstring (as it appears on the video) should be replaced with one that would resemble the original ones a little more. However, you have done a truly great job restoring this piece of history. Congratulations on your workmanship.
@WWII Tube Restoration i have the same helmet, like conditions, the metal is in good condition but it was painted yellow by the previous owner and has now rusted under the paint, how can I make it the same as it was 70 years ago?
Very nice, I really like the texture paint too. However I have some positive criticism to add.. the chinstrap was put on backwards I'm afraid. And I might sound like a stickler but I would have textured the split pins before adding them. I probably would have aged the liner as well but that's just me, im weird like that, sorry. But it probably fares a little better than before anyway!🙄
Another great video. They're so relaxing. Do you have any tips on how to tell if one is an original or a fake stahlhelm as I have found some for sale in my country but aren't too sure if they're real or not?
great job! since you are using water based decals there are solutions that you apply them over the decal and soften it so that it sticks better to the surface. you can find these solutions in hobby stores that sell plastic models
DON’T do What he does. You have to save the history of your helmet..if you want a perfect clean helmet go buy a reproduction! Clean it only with some oxalic acid and linseed oil

I wonder how many German helmets were brought back by Allied soldiers after the war and still retain their finish? And how many were restored like this one? I used to have a low esteem for M42s because of their rough finishes but now that's all I'm picking up recently.
Use drywall then sand it. Make sure to use light coats to thick. I would advise to sand it down then put the drywall smoothly over the whole helm. The paint Will make the drywall strong and you wont even tell. And for youre saftey please wear a mask and hold breath as it contains silica dust.
How much "mashing" time in edetate disodium does it take? One hour or a few? Or perhaps it needs to be kept overnight to achieve the oxide demotion? Please, clarify it.

The red and white colours in the decal were found to attract enemy fire, so were ordered painted over prior to the France 1940 campaign. Many units, however, especially in the rear echelons didn’t overpaint theirs.
Hi! I'm 13 and I am new in the world of the Militaria and restoration! I'm going to buy my first helmet (a German helmet) and, if the condition are bad, going to restore it. I've got some questions for you and, if you can reply, you will help me a lot: what are the tools and the products that you used? Can you quickly describe the use of less knowed? Where can I buy them? Thanks a lot and sorry for my bad English!
Tell me if i am wrong but i found a lot of german helmet that looks like that with almost no paint or just not at all and the helmet always have the same tone so im thinking maybe they are burnt because allies after the war put a lot of german equipment in holes in the ground and burnt it, if people can explain to me it would be nice
Which type of gallon is used here for measuring, the US or the Imperial gallon? It's clear that 2 lbs = 907.2 grams approximately (for al the people that uses the metrical decimal system of measurements).
I wanna clarify every doubt that could have, because I would like to try this if I had the opportunity to buy a WWII Stalhhelm (whether is the M1935 used by other countries such as the Chilean Army) or the M1942, the latest from the original design used by the Wehrmacht during the last years of WWII, and briefly used by the nascent Bundeswehr from 1956.

i have a worrying feeling, the M42 i won at a auction, is gonna look the same under the horrible apple green and double SS decal paint job someone did in the 70s... at the parts where the paint fell off, it´s rusted like hell, but i only pait around 80$ for it and it´s a 60s or 60s ground find from normandy, so i have hope that the stamp is still visible, so i can see if it maybe even was a SS one, or if that lot number will even spit out anything or if it´s not registered... my plan is to make it a Fieldgrey, single decal WH helmet (WH stands for "Wehrmacht Heer", is german, but it´s basicly the same in english, so no need for translations there ig) if the lot number is visible but isn´t registered, or if there isn´t any lot number visible... it´s a size 68 though, so perfect for my big a$$ head... ^^
Just started watching your videos. I love what you are doing! After watching a few, I was wondering how much human dna must be spackled around these helmets in the form of sweat in the chin straps, dandruff everywhere, and other, more gory content that may be all over the helmet. What’s the correct variation of feldgrau to restore an m40 heer made in quist?
Hello my friend, very good restouration you have here, I’m trying to restore an m42 Helmet to, could you maybe give me som advice?

Tr3sA yeah, but reproductions have no markings and a weird shape, real ones are better.

Tr3sA but reproductions are very crappy
Do you have any color code for that spray or it is just some dark green spray?

What is that powder you use to make the rough texture? Is it sand?
It's aluminum oxide

That adhesive has a binary base of epoxy resin and tertiary amine? Which is the reason for applying in the helmet crown?
any reason that you bogged up the holes in the top instead of just welding and grinding them?
@George Gee...... but it is broke - hence the hole, and bogging it isn't fixing it.
Great restoration! I was wondering what kind of putty substance you used to patch the rust holes?
chemical metal
epoxy weld

only until march 1940
One side had a red white and black crest, the other side had the eagle crest. ( maybe later in the war the sticker was dis continued.)
