- This is the first time I have ever held anything from WW2 and to have chance to restore a Brodie Helmet was pretty exciting. While carrying out the work on this WW2 Helmet Restoration I couldn’t help but wonder who the initials belonged to and what he and the helmet went through during those dark times.
When I came across the British Army Helmet it was looking very worn, there were a few dents in it along with some very deep pock marks from the rust. I had initially intended not to use filler and try to sand it down but after inspecting it I didn’t think the metal would take it. The process of de rusting, Sanding,Filling and Painting have taken me two weeks to do and about 22hours in total. There are parts of the process which i did not include, The lettering that you see was carried out by my local sign company but originally I had printed some letters along with a poppy and a soldier silouhette which I cut out by hand. The helmet started red then black before the green which allowed me to then peel off each layer of the image but sadly this didn’t go to plan so I settled for this finish instead.
I decided not to try to restore the strap as I felt it was more important to retain some of the history especially since it had someones intials on it. I would have reused the liner threaded holdng pin if it had been a little longer but I will keep all three together as package.

This is a hobby for me which I enjoy doing in my spare time. I am not a professional restorer, Painter or fabricator and I know some of my techniques may not be upto the standards of some professionals on here. Having said that if you think you know a better way to complete these works I would be happy to listen,
I will learn from each project to bring you not only a nicer finished piece but also a cleaner piece of editing. Please leave your comments below and ill do my best to reply to them.
Kind Regards Unique Restorations

I think you do wonderful work and in my eyes you are a professional. And the heart and soul you put into each project you do. You should be very proud. Thank you for sharing you passion. Jim B
James, that's a great Compliment. Thank you. Regards Brian
Of course WWII is of massive importance, possibly as a collection of incidents the most important historical event ever. However, even though how we took paint off doors in the 60s, or how we used a very dangerous fuel to heat our homes isn’t as important overall I do think they have some importance for the social history of that time. It might even be more important for individuals to preserve these things as fewer people do so and they have the greater danger of being lost forever. Personally I think every restoration you have done has historical importance.
I’ve watched many helmet restorations on RUclips, some by fantastic channels, but yours is the best I've seen. The webbing is brilliant as was the entire finish and care taken.
A superb finishing touch, that didn’t affect the integrity of the helmet at all, and I’m glad you saved the bits you replaced.
Another fantastic video, thank you.
Mark that is a fantastic a comment both with the information you provide and the praise given. I will try keep these videos coming and hopefully keep preserving some of our history. Thanks again Mark. Regards Unique Restorations.
Such attention to detail, love your finishing touches, such a beautiful touch, excellent work
What a poignant reminder of those soldiers who give all. A lovely restoration, I'm enspired to do the same with one of my browdies. Rest in peace to the soldier who once wore this, lest we forget. Xxxx
Absolutely, couldn't say it better myself, thank you for your comment Damian, Regards Brian
Very nice restoration. It's nice to see it getting taken care of after being through so much.
An absolute work of art, you have shown such a brilliant restoration with the finishing touches at the end, a great tribute. Great job ❤
Thank you Sarah. Glad you liked it. Regards Unique Restorations.
I absolutely love this one, well done. Again, as with your other videos there is no cutting corners and the hard work has paid off. Looking forward to seeing what you are doing next.
Thanks Jo. It took a while to do but I think it's worth it. Regards Unique Restorations
I'm normally against restoring helmets, but this one is simply brilliant and it's a wonderful homage to those who fought.
Subscribed :)
Butt still i cant get over the fact he didnt use a Belgian post war reisseu helmet this one clearly had original paint underneath the rust
I have a ww1 version, it has a shallower bowl, and I think you did a great job restoring this one
Thanks tanklord99. Regards Brian
Very nice job. Thanks for preserving an important piece of history.
Thanks Mark.

Thank you for doing this project , I am sure a veteran would appreciate the meaning.
Enjoyed watching. Thank you.
Fanastic restoration, and a great tribute to those who served in both world wars.
To be honest it drops the price i could be worth when he is older so its kinda bad to restore ww2 items because the price will drop
I recently done a m15 Adrian that was all painted in correctly and shabby. I'd agree with most on not restoring but it was great fun, can't wait for the next project! Love the video!
Fantastic restoration and very thought provoking 🇬🇧👍
Such a great video, it's really nice.
Nicely done. Very good restoration 👍👍👍
Am doing an exact one at the moment which was sitting in my garage for ages.Well done good job!

Hi Raptors316, This is one of my favourites. It took alot of work but worth every minute. Glad you liked it. Regards Brian
Amazing restoration, well done 👏
Only just found your channel , what a wonderful restoration and that finishing touch really brought tears to my eyes x
Muy bonito trabajo ! Personas como tu son un ejemplo para la humanidad porque demuestran que las cosas se pueden reparar y transformar con dedicación,espíritu y pasión.Felicidades amigo.
As collector i scream to ya dont do it ☹️
Same but I’m going t restore a pitted rust one no liner or chinstrap
Same
If he put it in oxolic acid the rust would go away and show OG paint under it but ngl I got scared when he ripped the chinstraps off
Awesome job, nice touch
Ive watched many of your videos, and you do amazing work. I too love to do restoration work as a hobby which i grew up watching my dad also doing in his free time. One suggestion would be to invest in a mini sandblasting kit. I'm sure it will cut down on rust removal time and increase the work quality. With the amount of money that you spend on rust removal products, the sandblaster would be just as adequately priced. Keep up the great work and will be continuing to watch..
you did a great job on that helmet,it looks brand new now WELL DONE.
Thanks Colin.
So glad I’ve found your channel😊
Thanks Jackie, regards Brian
I was waiting for your next video man 👍 Another great restoration 🤗
Hi Frag x7 thanks for your comment. It has taken a while for this one but I think it's worth it. Glad you like it. Hopefully the next one should be out shortly. Regards Unique Restorations.
@@UniqueRestorations It was worth, with great historical significance, my great-grandfather fought in WW2 and he died protecting our country. Keep up with good work, greetings from Serbia ❤
Frag x7 thanks for sharing about your Great Grandfather. When I started this channel I never imagined some of these items would carry so many memories. So many people have shared their stories through just channel and it makes it more worth while. Greetings from the UK. Regards Unique Restorations.
I just get notice from RUclips. Btw nice little touched in the end. Good restoration and deeply meaningful . Thanks
Great restoration! Turned out really well
I was happy with the result. Regards Brian
Thankyou this is a very fitting tribute to the men who wore these helmets. The fallen and the very luck men who came back home to their loved ones. My dad was one of those lucky enough to come home. LEST WE FORGET.
Thanks Kath, This restoration for me has had the most emotion attached to it, Its hard to think what people went through all those years ago. I couldn't finish this Helmet without the tribute. Thanks for your Comment. Regards Brian
@@UniqueRestorations you're very welcome Brian. It made me shed a few tears as my dad lost a lot of family during WW2. People I heard so much about who I would have loved to meet. It means so many things to so many different people.
@uniqueRestorations do you know where I can buy any Brodie helmet paint because I just have a pure metal helmet on my desk
@@Big_biskieplayz you can't buy the same paint now You will have to get the correct colour.
@@kathoakes929 I meant like reproduction paint
Give it some life. Great stuff. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for saving something precious
Well done bro. Looks great.
Thanks Tim. Regards Unique Restorations
Lovley. Thank you for doing this.
Hi Maurine, I though the Helmet deserved a little more respect than a quick sand and paint. Glad you liked it. Regards Brian
Great work. I've got the American Model we used prior to Operation Torch and have it painted to display some Trench Art of the WW1 period. My second helmet is almost Mint and locked away.
Excellent work. Kudos.
Hi Zencognito. It is my favourite project so far. Glad you like it. Regards Brian

either you live in the middle of nowhere or have very understanding neighbours. if I did that at 6:30 on a Sunday morning, mine would string me up by the …….helmet
Hi Patriot MU. I have a bad habit of waking early, if it was grinding I would have waited but I was only do the quiet bits like cleaning. Thanks for your comment. Regards Brian

It was also used by the US until it was replaced by the M1 helmet... Excellent job restoring it.
Amazing work
Thanks Biggy Cheese. Regards Brian
Watched this again, think this is a great tribute 🙏
Thanks Sarah , it's a favourite of mine. Regards Brian
Very nicely done, very nice. As a veteran myself I must say I loved the final touch. I also noticed at the beginning of the video you also had some very nice jugs. Wherever did you find so many of them?
Hi Chanda, I found this Helmet at a local reclamation yard. It's full of architectural and historic things. It's great to walk round looking at this stuff. Thanks for your comment. Regards Brian
Exceptionial!
OUTSTANDING!!!
Thanks Budman 123052, I have to say this one is my favourite and loved the way it turned out. Regards Brian
Great Job Well-done
Very nice!
Congrats for your videos. Could you tell me a good site where to find the inside protection for military helmets? Thanks in advance.
Hi Ton. I searched online for one and I managed to find one in America. There are a few places around that sell them. Regards Brian
Great job
I would ad 2 coats of flat clear to it. Those flat paints are easy to scratch but wait a full month for the paint to set before. Nice job.
Thanks Michel, that's a good Idea, I will probably do that as it does mark easy. Regards Unique Restorations
Nice work and nice tribute U.R. !
FYI. If you weren't already aware, judging by the markings which appear to read RO.Co 1/1939, your helmet was, I believe manufactured by 'Rubery Owen & Co Ltd of Leeds, in January 1939 (IIRC they ceased production in 1943). Keep up the good work mate! 👍👍👍
Thank you for the information very interesting to know.Regards Brian
Excellent!
The fallen will be smiling at you from above god bless
Well Done! 👍
Thanks Ronald. Regards Brian
very nice and a great honor to the men who wore those
I also have an original tin hat that I use for motor cycling however this one seems to have a much deeper bowl than mine. Anyone know why?
Beautiful work! I've lately developed a fondness for the Brodie, even though I'm a Yank. I have no idea why.
Hi David, I think it's the curves, it it is beautifully shaped and holds a shared history. Regards Brian
Me too. However for me, m1 helmet all the way 🇺🇸
US wore this during WW1......
Eman design in London In London 1915 British helmet
Outstanding
Thanks Greg. Regards Unique Restorations
Nice restoration, treated the surface in a very very good way, it looked very smooth in the end. About the rust Hlhave you tried to use cathodic removal? This takes time but saves some efforts.
Hi Jucifabio, I haven't tried electrolysis yet but it does look effective. I may try it one day. Thanks. Regards Brian
Well done, mate. 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Cathy, regards Brian
does anybody know if there were british helmets with lizard emblems painted on in ww2? i found one for sale but don't know if it is original
What a wonderful gesture to veterans worldwide
Great video keep it up
Thanks Gamer Tips, good luck with your channel. Regards Brian
Super job
Thanks Melvyn, regards Brian
Hello, Initially I was quite disturbed to see a total remake of an authentic 1939 helmet. I thought the dent in the top was probably received in the course of it's service during the war.I then read that this is the first item you had held from the 2nd World War. My father served in the South West Pacific as a Combat Medic in the US Army. I have been studying and collecting military antiques for over 55 years. At the end of the video I could see how you created a tribute to all the brave men from the World Wars. I think you were able to celebrate their efforts through your project. Thanks.
Thank you Eric, regards Brian
Bravo capitaine 👍🏻

where is this in Lincolnshire i got there quite a bit
Bom trabalho.
Hmm, anyone have information on the specific OD Green shade?
May I know what kind of spray paint are you using? that is a nice shade of green, thank you.
Hi Shadowrax Leung, the green is just a camouflage green bought from a local car parts centre. Regards Brian
Отличная работа 👍
A wonderful job and a fitting tribute. Well Done. As an aside, I have my Fathers 1940 dated helmet and his is Brown not Green? Not that it matters no doubt there were many different colours used in different theatres of the war!!
I have a Brodie helmet but it isn’t as deep as this one, are there different sizes? and yes it has the same liner as this one....
Hi Mike I'm not really sure if there are different sizes. This is the first one I have ever owned. I'm sure someone will answer your comment soon. Regards Brian
The Kids over here in the USA have FORGOTTEN. All they care about is the Latest Cell Phone! My Dad was in WWll (3 of the major battles Northern France, Ardennes, and the Rhineland! I have 3 WWll M1 helmets (2) Schlueter front seam fixed bale, front seam swivel bale, and one McCord rear seam swivel bale. Early war, Mid-war, and Late War. Great job on the helmet restoration! The best paint I found for the right paint is FOSCO there out of Holland.
Thanks jmuraidajr, I may collect some more Helmets in time but I don't I'll have as big a collection as yours. Thanks for sharing your father's wartime memories. It makes these restoration all the more worth it. Thanks again. Regards Brian
I wonder what the unknown solder would say if he saw the fantastic tribute you made from his old helmet?
Hi Graeme, Its a shame it can't be returned to him but given the time scales it's probably too late. It would have been emotional for him to see it. Regards Brian
what paint did you use for the helmet. im looking to restore mine as it is in bad shape
Hi there, I bought a standard camouflage green from Halfords. Regards Brian
Well done cracking job especially at the end the war memorial years I'd love to do that with one of my Tommy Helmats 👍 lest we forget.
What did he put on it that green stuff.
Amazing work, where did you find this helmet?
Hi CJ productions. I found it at a reclamation yard, regards Brian
Is that the right shade for the helmet? I'm pretty sure it was more of a brown colour
Sir Percival. It's probably not the right colour or texture but it's what I chose to do as I though the lettering would stand out better
Thanks for your comment. Regards Brian
In my opinion we could have skipped the rust remover and the steel brush efford by using the electrolysis technique. It would desolve all the rust to bare metal even out of the smallest cracks. But Nice work anyway, i like such projects!
Hi schuur10 you are probably right about the electrolysis although I have tried to show some evolution through my videos. My first used vinegar, then a rust gel before getting to Evapo rust. If you watch my latest video which will hopefully be ready on Sunday you will see Electrolysis. Thanks For for comment regards Brian
What is the product you use at 5:55? Is that basically plaster of paris?
Hi Jennica, it's a body filler like you use on cars. Regards Brian
An exelent memorial to our fallen. Maybe a poppy on the shiney bit on top?
Hi jackofswords7 I had originally sprayed the front red and had a poppy sticker put on. The I spray the same area black and applied a soldier silhouette before painting it green. I tried peeling off the stickers to reveal the colours but it damaged the paint work so I just left it green. Regards Brian
were did you get the liner?
Hi Gewoon Jeroen. I just searched for it on Google. I found this one in America. Regards Brian
The great job on the Restorations what you try to do more bayonets
Hi Jose, I will see what I can find on my next shopping trip. Regards Brian
Hi! What Color paint did you use? Thanks
I am Gobsmacked!! To turn what you had into such a befitting tribute to the Chappie who originally wore it.
For us, this chap risked his life, maybe lost it too?
I guess, by some comments, that you shouldn't restore these relics? For me, I think you did well by making it "new" again. You did well!
Thanks Michael, glad you appreciate it, some people dislike it but it's hard to get through to them that if I left it where it was it would just rot away. This way it will still be around in another 100 years. Regards Brian
What spray paint are you using?
I just used a camouflage spray from local shop.
I had this helmet that I bought in 2010 for only 2 usd I hope I can restore it like yours
