    Boy this brings back memories! My '71 was an Ontario Orange t-top and I voided the warranty within two weeks by installing Hooker chrome side mount headers, Holley 800 double pumper,
    Accel dual point distributor, B & M shifter plate, Ansen mags...it was a beast but only got 12 mpg on a good day...lol

    There was a problem fitting the intake manifold under the hood of the 1970 corvette. That is why the engine in 1970 only found its way into Chevelles.

  • @chriscarbaugh3936
    @chriscarbaugh3936 3 года назад +2

    One key item to mention is that the LS-6 in the Corvette was NOT actually detuned; rather the high rise intake manifold of the Chevelle would not fit. The low rise intake required, even with the big block hood did not breathe quite as well; hence the 425 rating. That is way many modded Corvettes run tall or L-88 type hoods, they need it for a taller (better?) intake. I am a long time LS-5 ‘vette owner. My ‘71 still wears much of its original Ontario Orange paint. Great video 👍

    • @ONTHEEDGEFRED
      @ONTHEEDGEFRED Год назад

      You could be correct about the intake, but I thought for sure they were considered "detuned" because instead of 11 to 1 compression, this 1 here only had 9 to 1 compression?

      @Chris Carbaugh , that's just it. The intake could have had something to do with it but I'm sure the 2 point compression drop DID have something to do with it.

      @@ONTHEEDGEFRED you’re found the info on the web! The 450 must have been underrated! A full two point drop in CR would surely cause more than the 25hp drop.

    How many forward gears are in that automatic transmission? Any overdrive?

    • @wb7942
      @wb7942 6 лет назад

      Steve Good:
      Thank you.
      I saw a lot of Turbo 400 transmissions in built muscle cars growing up in the 80s.
      It seems a little strange (now) that we got along with only three forward gears (and no overdrive) for so long. But that explains why rear gearing was relatively more important back then.
      It also explains why it was an improvement to get a four-speed (overdrive) automatic transmission in Formula Firebirds (the poor man's Corvette) in the late 80s. That was the only way you could get the 5.7 liter engine for quite a while. If you wanted a (five-speed) manual you were limited to the 5 liter engine.

      In the 60’s and the 70’s there were many dealers selling highly modified new cars. Yenko, Berger, Motion....... there’s even dealers who people don’t know about who didn’t get famous. They did all kinds of things and sold the cars as new, because they were. The sales tactic may have been to give the option package a GM style code to make the buyer feel more at ease. Who knows they could’ve faked an entire window sticker. The fact is though that GM never offered anything like you’re describing.
