Current 135 FO, I agree. I’ve had the pleasure of learning under some very experienced captains, and some brand new captains. And all of them have been very helpful and give their tips. It’s a great community.
Quality of life is soooo important & I think it’s great that you realize different seasons of life bring different priorities & you’re maximizing all your incentives and perks now to help make things easier for you as your life and career progress.
Good stuff! I work the ramp and I’m saving up as much as possible to pay out of pocket for flight school. I only make $2800 working 200hrs per month, so the hours and figures mentioned are very motivating. Hopefully the hiring comes back strong by the time I hit my minimums.
I don't want to demotivate you but flight school can cost between $100k-150k from zero to flight instructor. You're better off building your credit and getting a loan. The worst thing is to run out of funds and not being able to continue school then you have to relearn again. Also I'd highly recommend Pilot Institute for learning everything you need to. That way when you get to school you're just focusing on flying since you know everything. Join a 141 school with all the ground knowledge and you can start working with less than 100 hrs assuming you pass everything
This was fascinating for me. What I enjoyed was hearing why you chose the life route you are currently taking. I have always prioritized certain life and family choices over the largest salary. Now that I have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, what a disappointment it would have been to have missed so many opportunities and memories that we had together. I have subscribed to and will look forward to your next posting. You never know what life has in store, so enjoy every opportunity that you can.
Great video! It was definitely a video I had been looking for. I start flight school with the American Cadet Program in January! Hope to see you up there in a few years and thanks for all you do!
Trip Vlog!! Yessss please do a trip log! I am 13 and really interested in aviation I have gone on multiple flights with my friends dad and i want to become a airline pilot when I am older, you inspire me soooo much thanks!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉. Thanks for the content!!
Great videos and explanations coming from a commercial airline pilot. I retired from AA after 30 years as an AMT and loved every minute of it not to mention making very good money. Anyway I've got a little question for you and would like your insight. Even though I don't know this man personally but I do know of him. He's only been a first officer for United for 3 months and yesterday they promoted him to Captain already. He had no prior experience at any other commercial airline but did work as a pilot for a small charter company. How in the world could this even be possible because you have to have a lot of flight time and put in a lot of years to make Captain. I realize there's a shortage of pilots but geez this is kinda scary I think.
Great video. So I guess you’re staying as FO. I respect your family time and your other ventures very much. I also love family time, but also can’t feel like I’m missing out on all that additional money, and of course, I would be craving that extra stripe for all those extra years! It is, indeed, a very hard decision and a life-changing decision. Either way, you are so far ahead of over 99% of others your age. I’m so impressed with you. I know you have worked amazingly hard to make your Dad proud, and you know he is proud of you! Enjoy every day of this beautiful life you have earned!,
I would like to know how the process works for upgrading to another plane when in the airline industry. How would you be able to go from a FO of a 737 to a FO for a 777? If you were a CA of a 737, and upgrade to a 777, do you go back to being a FO or are you given training to remain as a CA?
ITS GREAT PAY. ITS A FUN JOB, LOTS OF DETAILS AND WORK. YOUR THE STAR OF THE SHOW!! GARRET: Where did you go to flight school and do you still have your credentials? My son just graduated university. Hes' going to go to officer school in the Navy and invest/save his sign on bonus. In 6 years, he is going to go apply to flight schools, flight programs, airline fast track ect. WHAT FLIGHT SCHOOL? (for 7.5 years from now)
If you convert to CA today, you said you'd be 62 of 90 Captains. Does that mean seniority as a captain is actually your seniority with the airlines instead of your seniority as a captain? Thank you!
That was great Garrett.Would like to know if there is a difference in hourly pay between FO in 777 and 737.If the pay is better, would consider being an FO in 777 other than upgrading to be a captain?
Hi Garret - you have to keep MS Bella company. I have seen you grow over these past 8 or 9 years with your great videos. You call it the way you see it. Are you really happy living in NYC? You work for a strong company - keep up the great work and be safe. Dave
Premium pay is additional monetary compensation, over and above the standard salary, given to employees who regularly work extra hours during their regular working schedule. It is a kind of premium pay, which is added to employees' regular wages for giving the services not included in their daily routine.
Thanks for your videos. My dream was to be a airline pilot as a kid. I did everything I could to make it to the airforce in high school but then took a color test and found out i was color blind😢 I was shattered needles to say. I'm now 39 and am a production manager at Toyota since 2012. I have a great life but can't help to wonder what life could of been every time I stop to see a huge jet fly over in the sky.
The barrier to entry in becoming an airline pilot in the US is much higher. You only need 200-250 hours to become an airline pilot in Europe compared to 1500 in the US. Most getting jobs at a major US airline company have over 3000 hours.
I agree. Even once you have 4000-5000h and already a captain in the EU, you still make around 8-10k gross…17k gross salary in Europe is when you are captain with a 15 years experience
Thank you so much for the vidoes as always, especially these new breakdowns. I liked the combined vidoes it gets the flying in and the information needed for planning future moves. Both are great salaries comparing them to mine working more hours and days. lol
Thanks for the great information! It’s been incredible! Would you mind expanding on how you would become 62/90 if you upgraded to Captain, instead of being 90/90? Also, could you compare the differences in Narrow to Wide body aircraft’s pay/schedule. What does the initial bid look like when first getting hired for aircraft type/base? Thanks!
If it’s anything like our seniority here in South Africa, then it’s based on start date at the company. If I accept captaincy before you but you had an earlier start date, then when you finally decide to upgrade, your start date puts you higher than me in seniority on the captains roster.
The question I have is: How long will it take for you to get back up in the top 10 in seniority as a captain, with people upgrading to widebodies, going to other airlines or just retiring ?
This is really interesting. Please correct me if im wrong, so you dont go from 4th year FO payscale to 1st year CA payscale. You go directly to 4th year CA?
Awesome. I might of missed this but are you currently 8 of 104 out of all the FOs based in NYC or #8 for just the 737 planes? If the latter would switching to another plane but still as an FO drop you down in seniority?? Thanks for all these helpful vids Garrett!
Considering the two schedules, JFK-PHX-JFK (40 h TAFB/10.5 h pay) and LGA-DFW-LGA (9.1 TAFB/7.3 h pay), I got a chuckle out of thinking that someone might overtake you in seniority for flying the JFK-PHX-JFK segments that you don't like so much :-p
Can you make a vidoe talking about the diffreance between a international pilot vs domestic like how does one become a international pilot things like that ?
for those of you waiting for a new video. please be patient as he is running 3 things all at once with being a pilot, owning/operating a company and a youtube channel and it was hard enough when his uncle was running 2 things at once with being a pilot and being part owner/operator with his salsa company so garrett is trying to figure things out. oh and garrett, happy thanksgiving. if you come down this way we are having it as grandmas house. just in case you want to show up
Absolutely like to see the pay difference between 737 and other, its really interesting how the seniority thing works. If I understand correctly, you could wait until your #8 in captain seniority and then upgrade?

Hi thanks for this video! I’m 15 and the goal is to be a pilot for major airline I’m currently taking dual credit classes so I have less college to do. I am planning on starting online college after I get my ratings and once I start working on my hours. I am planning to finish the college about 1 year after I’m done getting my minimum hours meaning I could theoretically go to a regional airline while finishing up college. Do you think this is a good plan? And do you think that the hiring boom will not exist when I am done with flight school? Thanks!
I love your videos man ! I am 41, I had a thing happen with my job (which is for the better), so I took out my 401K to pay to flight school, I lived out of a tent and my car in FL for a few months (to avoid paying rent :))), and I am a few days away from doing my first solo, and PPL is around the corner... where did you go to flight school ?
Hey mate! I love your Videos, i would ove to see a comparison with FO 737 vs FO 777 or 787!!! I think that would be a much better rought for you to take as well.
I think it would be a cool comparison to see what the pay would be like if you switched over to wide body as an FO and seeing what the potential is for you later on down the road to transition into a wide body captain. Make that money! 😂
Great insightful video thanks Garret ! Would you maybe give some of the cons of being an airline pilot as in the lifestyle ? I say this because I see a lot of flight attendant videos saying they hated the job because of the exhausting long days, away from the home and “ becoming the job “ would you say it’s like this from the pilots perspective?
Just looking for advice. Currently I am about halfway done to finishing my bachelors degree and am planning on going to ATP (or a local school and just flying a ton) to get through it asap. I’ve been hearing from pilots I’ve been in contact with that in the next 2 years the hiring should be pretty high again, which puts a lot of people in places of seniority. Knowing a bachelors degree isn’t technically required anymore, would it be advantageous for me to just stick with the path in currently on, or should I just send it through a flight school sooner than later to try and gain seniority sooner? I know there’s sooooo many variables that come in to play so I’m just looking to hear y’all’s thoughts on this haha
So, you said you get paid for 80 hours per month (approximately). How much of those are flying hours? In other words, how many flying hours do you accumulate per year?
do you think in the upcoming 4 to 6 years, the US legacy airlines, start to hire foreign pilots ? due to masive retirements of the Senior Captn’s ? across the US aviation industry ?
Is the pay the same for any airline company? My friend flew United international from SF intl. to China as a Captain with 30-years' experience on 777 and the old 747 planes. Do you go through simulator training every year?
Hi Garrett! Thank you for your videos, they are really motivating! I’m turning 38 soon, and since childhood, civil aviation has been my dream, which eventually became a hobby, as I went into the film industry and worked in film production for a long time. I recently moved to the U.S. and now have the opportunity to pursue a career as a pilot. But my age worries me-how risky is it to enter this industry at this age with the goal of eventually being hired by a major airline like AA as a First Officer? I also wonder if it’s even possible to grow into a captain, though I think it’s unlikely because, from what I’ve read on forums, younger candidates are usually preferred. What would you advise?
im in a similar boat as you. ive met a handful of people in the industry that said even in your early 40s to mid 40s its still great to pursue. we're still going to get 20-25 years of a great career
Since you say to get your hours fast because seniority is everything, would you be in favor of taking out $100k in loans to do that in ~ one year? Or would you rather save and only spend $60k but take ~ three years to get it done? I see a lot of hate towards bigger loans, but if you can get it done quicker and tackle the loan hard afterward, especially on a duel income like myself, I don't see an issue with it. Right?
Hi Garrett! How much time if any did you spend as a CFI before starting with an airline? Considering starting the journey to becoming a pilot but not sure how long overall it will take before I get there
Thanks Garret very much answers my curiosity about Pilot wages, was also wondering about the ratio of FO,s to Captains in any base i guess there,s more FO,s .And my other question is the Captains position very stressful considering everything falls on him or her decision wise like any person in charge although i cant think of be bigger responsibility than flying a passenger Airliner. Again thanks enjoy your content very much Kym Adelaide
Garrett seems like such a nice and genuine dude, really is being transparent and wants the best for us
would love a video explaining pay differences between different aircraft captains
I think the information is online . On each airlines website
@@lovetsepi7707 It's on airline pilot central!
I get the FO side but being a PIC atleast in a 135 atm is just amazing! Being able to mentor FO’s and watch them grow is priceless!
You don't know what your talking about buddy, they don't mentor you they humiliate you in the sim.
This. PIC’s on a 650/7500 are making 400k and flying 300 hours a year lol. Airline guys hate unjustifiably.
At an airline you don’t fly with the same Capt/FOs.. very unlikely you see the mentorship pay off
Current 135 FO, I agree. I’ve had the pleasure of learning under some very experienced captains, and some brand new captains. And all of them have been very helpful and give their tips. It’s a great community.

What is the difference between the premium and straight trips? Like why do you get paid more for the premium and what does that mean ?
Premium pay is additional monetary compensation, over and above the standard salary, given to employees who regularly work extra hours during their regular working schedule. It is a kind of premium pay, which is added to employees' regular wages for giving the services not included in their daily routine.

im in a similar boat as you. ive met a handful of people in the industry that said even in your early 40s to mid 40s its still great to pursue. we're still going to get 20-25 years of a great career
So you'd be 62/90 because of your seniority from FO? If that's the case you can remain FO till you can get to 20/90 captain seniority.
hi, I’m 16 and I love aviation, I wanna be a pilot but my only concern is my grades, what were your grades before flight school?
Since you say to get your hours fast because seniority is everything, would you be in favor of taking out $100k in loans to do that in ~ one year? Or would you rather save and only spend $60k but take ~ three years to get it done?
I see a lot of hate towards bigger loans, but if you can get it done quicker and tackle the loan hard afterward, especially on a duel income like myself, I don't see an issue with it. Right?
Hi Garrett! How much time if any did you spend as a CFI before starting with an airline? Considering starting the journey to becoming a pilot but not sure how long overall it will take before I get there
So how many hours per month do you average including premium?
Thanks Garret very much answers my curiosity about Pilot wages, was also wondering about the ratio of FO,s to Captains in any base i guess there,s more FO,s .And my other question is the Captains position very stressful considering everything falls on him or her decision wise like any person in charge although i cant think of be bigger responsibility than flying a passenger Airliner.
Again thanks enjoy your content very much

can you recommend aviation schools to go to as an international student who wants to be a commercial pilot
You covered this in detail in at least 2 previous videos. You referenced the APC website.
