    "He pushed the gas pedal all the way down? Why didn't I think of that?!"
    This always bothered me about Ford v Ferrari. I feel like they needed to consult with more racing drivers, because "push the gas down more" is a minivan driver's idea of how to go faster.

    • @_MrBlack
      @_MrBlack  Год назад +396

      This type of argument was exposed many times and I never saw the need to answer it, since if you have seen the movie you should know why he does not force the engine to the maximum during the entire race.
      In previous scenes where it was seen how they developed and polished the ford gt40 they had a problem when the engine was over 7000 rpm, and they could not solve it in time, so it was unstable and very likely that the engine would break down. You should also add that these types of races are not short as in gran turismo or forza of 3-5 laps, they are endurance races where not only the driver's skills are tested but also the capabilities of the engines and cars. To make matters worse, I was in the final laps and the engine was at its limit, it was risking everything or nothing.

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp Год назад +151

      @@_MrBlack In the very specific context of the (made up for the movie) RPM limit, there is a justification. However, they do this kind of thing through the WHOLE movie. Halfway through the Mulsanne straight, drivers are side by side looking at each other like road ragers on the 405, and then the really good driver pushes the pedal farther down and wins. Almost every single pass in this movie is made by pushing the pedal farther and going faster (or by mechanical failure, which is legitimate). Watch any actual endurance race and you will never see two cars seemingly even on the straight and then one just pull away like he hit the Super Turbo Boost button. Passes are made primarily in corners, or on the Mulsanne by very slowly creeping past with a better top speed, or by mechanical failure, or by pit stop speed/strategy. No one, but no one, is going out racing at half throttle on the straights. Other movies handle this better. Rush, the F1 movie about Hunt and Lauda, is very good. Also, Steve McQueen's 1971 movie LeMans is very authentic, largely because most of the racing footage was taken from the real 1970 race. Hell, the passes in Initial-D are (usually) more believable.
      Now about the engines keeping together. The 427 they used in the GT40 was already being used in NASCAR races, which are many hours long and involve even longer stretches of sustained full-throttle at high RPM. Engine builders for that series were known to put the engine at peak power on a dyno and then leave for lunch, in order to verify that the state of tune was sustainable. If the engines have a durability issue in testing, they adjust the car, rather than tell the driver to not go full throttle. If the engines doesn't like higher RPM, they'll gear it up so it doesn't get there on the long straights. They can adjust ignition timing in the distributor or re-jet the carburator to produce less heat if that's the problem, or worst case scenario change the throttle linkage to stop just short of full. But what they would never do is tell their drivers to poodle around at half throttle, because race drivers just won't do that. It's hard enough getting them to go easy on tires and brakes. In the modern era (1980s+) these adjustments will be driver selectable with electronics, and the strategy team back in the pits may tell a driver to choose different fuel or ignition maps based on fuel usage, etc (with telemetry to verify he's doing what he's told). In the old days that was done before the race with hardware adjustments, and they'd make changes in the pits if needed.

      That's because in non anime racing, drifting is almost always the slowest way around a corner. Rally is an exception, but for the most part keeping all your grip is faster. That said, drifting can be really really pretty, and it's a great way to make animated cars look like they're going faster

      This is an endurance race, in the movie, they experience malfunctions when the car is over 7000 revs, so this is the reason he isn't going in full throttle. And by the way, certain cars experience the better performance near the redline even if its not good for the engine.
