If you look back to their early songs, Scott has always covered the Bass when the normal bassist takes solo. This goes right back to Hallelujah (best seen on the live Christmas show video).
That was when I first thought, after Avi left, okay…everything’s gonna be alright…the new guy can definitely sing!!! Little did I know that he would transition so smoothly into the PTX family!!!
I went to their concert last night. Not only does he have an amazing voice but he also has an incredible stage presence. He was the right fit for PTX. They have incredible chemistry together.
@@mel3268 Actually, I’ve always thought that there was a Higher Power at work here…not only did they procure the final two pieces to their group only hours before the sing off…after winning, they had their legs chopped off by being dropped by their record label (not commercial enough)…then after defying all the odds, they lose an integral part of their group…Avi Kaplan, base extrodinare! @@timcaldwell5241 It goes beyond that, even. What are the odds against three such phenomenally talented people as the trio growing up together and meeting when they were children - not just all in the same town, but in the same generation? It makes me wonder what was in the water in Arlington, Texas in the early 1990s, when they were born.
This is an amazing show of vocal talent. most people when they first listen to PTX recognize Mitch for that impossibly crystal clear high voice or Avi for that amazing bass, now Matt, Then Kirstie's power shows up then finally last but not least everyone realizes that Scott has an INCREDIBLE, Incredible voice. My fav is still Kirstie; but I just have a thing for powerful female voices. But yes here they all shine. AND yes Kevin has a pretty voice as well. love these peoples!!! 🥰
This was the first song that got me down the Pentatonix rabbit hole. Among the other beautiful voices, Mitch's crystal clear and resonant voice captured me the most. I started to dig deeper to find out more about him and found Superfruit. The rest is history.😊
Now that you've recognized Scott's covering of the bass line, i recommend that you go back and listen to the songs you've reacted to previously - he's been doing this all along! Whenever Avi or Matt sings lead, Scott sings bass! He is a true baritone, who can stretch up into the tenor range and also slide down into low bass - very much a Jack of All Trades!
The Sound of Silence was written and performed by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. They originally recorded an acoustic version in 1964. It was featured, along with several other Paul Simon songs, in the 1967 movie "The Graduate" starring Dustin Hoffman - other songs were "Mrs. Robinson," "Scarborough Fair," and "April She Will Come." I love the original and taught myself to play it on the guitar in the early 70s! The words are timeless...it could have been written today, I think.
One of my favorites. Seeing them in one week. I’m thankful it wasn’t this week though because we got hit with 100+ weather this week and that would be no fun LoL Going to recommend If I Ever Fall in love (ft Jason Derulo) Scott sings his butt off in that one. Cheerleader is a fun one.
Watch the live version on "Ellen". It is an astonishing live performance; I would put it in the top five of all their live performances, and the sound engineers on the show's crew knew how to work with an a cappella group, so the balance is perfect.
Paul Simon wrote this, Simon and Garfunkel were the first to record it. I’m enjoying your reactions, especially PTX of course 😃. Edit, Yes, Scott always covers bass whenever the bassist is singing. His range is off the charts.
Not a fan of the original but love their version. Can't wait to see them in 2 days!!! Yes, Scott is doing bass while Matt sings. Can't wait for you to get into their Christmas music! When you said this is their showoff song, it reminded me of my son. When I was trying to describe them to me son a while back, he asked me if they were the ones that "Flex" on all the Christmas songs. I said that was them. Carol of The Bells (otherwise known as "When does Mitch breathe"), O Come all Ye Faithful and Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy are just three of my favorites that would be a good place for you to start you Christmas songs with. Once I heard their Christmas songs, I cannot stand the stuffy traditional ones they play over and over again on the radio.
@@555VibesIf you can find the one they did live with BYUTv, that would be the one to react to but it is hard to find anymore unless someone sends you a link, otherwise, their Official Video will suffice. They were waaaay younger in the Official Video. Enjoyed!
I’ve read where someone said that the original song was of sadness, the Disturb version one of anger and this version is of Optimism. Never cared for the original, Absolutely Love the dark and angry sound of Disturb’s vocals and the video is something to watch and figure out what is happening. Pentatonix version is much lighter and my favorite of all the versions. Getting to hear all of them sing is always a positive. ❤❤ Scott has always covered bass when Avi or Matt are singing solo parts. You just never caught it before now. They are all talented and each and everyone of them cover for each other in one way or another when needed. I believe that’s just one of the reasons they are so Awesome and Wonderful.
Great reaction. Try some of their newer originals like Coffee in Bed and Be My Eyes. Their latest original just released is I Rise. You should also try Scott and Mitch’s solo work. Mitch’s is under the name Messer.
??? This is far from Matt's first performance with PTX. His first video was Deck the Halls, released in October 2017. This was released in February 2019, long after Havana, Attention, Perfect and more, and lots of Christmas music.
And of course here I am ! Even at this horrible hour my spirits are lifted. You so " got" this song, Scott never ceases to amaze, he can go everywhere. I'm sure your familiar with disturbed version, they put a more upbeat, positive spin and absolutely nailed it. And believe it or not there are yet a couple more " Mitch slap" moments coming , hard to believe but true. I always say thank you but extra thank you for this a cappella perfection, this pentaholic is going to give another listen ( since I can quit anytime I want to) haha. Thanks again
I love it when they show off. I’ve been watching their 2019 tour documentary series. These guys work hard and really are a family. Big changes for them in 2023-2024. Scott married in 2023 and wrote a book in 2024. Kirstie married in April 2024. Kevin (second time) and Matt (first time) are new fathers this summer.
Thank you for your enjoyable reactions!😍 ‘Sound of Silence’ is truly an amazing song…. mind-blowing it was released in 1964, spanning the decades and interpretations.🎉
I recommend PTX's lover of Gold. To truly appreciate their skill level, listen to the original by Kiarra which has a lot of electronic manipulation. Then watch the five of these guys singing it stripped down and raw. Their skill level is off the charts.
There is a Kirsty before she was on broadway in kinky boots and then there's the Ultimate Kirsty after she was on broadway. Broadway was always her dream starting when she was very young, but it gave her the confidence that she still lacked even being part of PTX. Its really quite amazing. The first song that showed that change was "havana" so anything before that you can tell the difference.
I really enjoy your Pentatonix reactions. They released a new single recently which I think, as a military guy, you might enjoy. It's an original song called "I Rise". The only official video right now is a visualizer with lyrics -- ruclips.net/video/XStULxbd-BY/видео.html There are also some fan-recorded live concert versions, from the US tour they are on right now.
I can’t wait for your PTX Christmas reactions! 🤗 Until then……I have a few suggestions. In no particular order. Evolution of Rihanna - Pentatonix Pentatonix - Problem (Ariana Grande Cover) (Official Video) Pentatonix cover 'Ride' by Twenty One Pilots The NOVA FM recording! It’s live in a radio station! As always, thank you for your PTX reactions! I really enjoy them!
The sounds you mention could be called bell-tones or arpeggios. I think in this arrangement they are meant to evoke the guitar accompaniment of the original, Simon and Garfunkel version. But there are also elements from the most famous cover, by David Draiman, lead singer of heavy metal band Disturbed, particularly a live version he did on the Conan late-night show in 2016.
Much different interpretation from Simon and Garfunkel's original with which I'm very familiar. 'Show off song'...this is quite dramatic with the build, and a theatrical flair. If you've not already, you might want to check out Disturbed's official video of this song. Very unique and a sight/sound experience.
If you want to really hear the other end of Scott's amazing range, check out "Lose Us" by Rozzi featuring Scott. I don't think Scott gets enough credit for how high and low he can go. (And Rozzi has a fantastic voice as well!)
They did a lovely cover, there are just SO many covers of this song and many of them are good, you could spent a lot of time on this song. My favorite will always be Disturbed's very closely followed by the original, but Adam Chance did a nice cover with the Hound & the Fox.
If you'd like to hear Matt a little bit more...he has a part in "Prayers for this World" and "Come Along". Come Along is a pretty fun one to listen to and watch.
The "doo doo doo" notes between verses are known as bell tones (sometimes bell notes). It's pretty normal technique for a cappella groups to use - often it simulates a piano or guitar used in the original. If you go back and listen to the PTX version of Bohemian Rhapsody, you'll hear Scott and Kirstie doing it to emulate the piano notes that Freddy Mercury played in the original.
I'd love to see avi return for a special performance and he duets with matt! But ya thats scott, he's bass backup since beginning. I like to say the members are 'cross trained ' in that they can cover other vocalists when they take lead. Obviously ypu have mitch and kirsty who can easily slide into each other's vocal range. But ypu also have Kevin who can cover tenor and higher with his falsetto, and Matt can also reach into the tenor range. Each person has amazing range, with the widest range being mitch who can go lower than ppl think and higher that he's not come out with yet, then Scott.
I am not sure if you heard them do Bohemia Rhapsody originally by Queen, they do an awesome job. It is from their earlier time though. If you havent heard the original by Queen i would suggest listen to that first then the version PTX does.
Found you through your BTS reactions, but PTX is one of my all-time favorite groups along with BTS. If you haven’t reacted to it yet, they do a mashup of “Dynamite x Butter” that is really good. Kevin and Matt do a little rapping in it. Another one of my faves is “Come Along” and their originals, “Sing” and “Be My Eyes” along with all the others that people recommend. Also, “Creep” on Masked Singer and the recording. So good! I got the pleasure of seeing BTS live Christmas week, 2021, in Sugarland, TX. They did not disappoint. Hopefully you are also reacting to Home Free. I’m not going to go back and find all of your PTX reaction. Yea!!!!
PTX and Home Free are two of my absolute favorites that I’ve been able to discover from recommendations. I’ll definitely watch that mashup. Thanks. I’m never going to stop doing PTX, Superfruit and Home Free stuff!
"That background harmony thing" is called bell tones. They're very common in Pentatonix's arrangements; they used them for the piano part in "Bohemian Rhapsody," for instance. Kevin, with his lovely tenor, is frequently contributing to the bell tones even while he beatboxes. For a great bass drop from Matt, watch this short of Scott, Kirstie, and Matt goofing around backstage: ruclips.net/user/shortsEm-QcqaEan8?si=7WbdGYJLpMnV9rHh Matt has an incredible range, greater than Avi's, I think, though he doesn't seem to be able to get down to basso profundo levels just yet.
If you look back to their early songs, Scott has always covered the Bass when the normal bassist takes solo. This goes right back to Hallelujah (best seen on the live Christmas show video).
