Coping With Sensory Overload With Nonverbal Autism

- After this weekend and the challenges Abbie faced we are coping with sensory overload with nonverbal autism so we can give her the tools she needs for her sensory processing disorder. The biggest challenge is when one sensory issue that she has like having things on her head interferes with another sensory issue like loud noises or bright lights.

When you're counting down with her wearing her headphones, I couldn't help but be in awh of her absolute natural beauty. She's such a gorgeous young lady!
Bianca Tarver yes I agree and Priscilla dresses her very nice as well.
And she was completely still waiting for 3!
I agree 💕 so beautiful💕
Melanie Smith actually asa bathes her and dresses her
@@Kcnbs4ever1 i believe her dad dresses her but her mom picks out her cloths
I am not commenting to get headphones. Please don't pick me, they are much better for someone else. I am commenting because I love what you do. I am learning a lot from you about autism. I have a suggestion that you probably have thought of but, have you tried the headphones that are setup to play music through. Abbie loves music and that would be a nice combination. It would block out noise and supply music that Abbie likes. At the end when Abbie was playing with the hand dryer was so cute and her laugh is adorable.
It's really funny that Brandy made the joke about having to cry in her car because Abbie warmed her heart. I'm also an ABA therapist and just before I watched this video I was quite literally crying in my car because my kiddo warmed my heart. He called someone out because he thought they used the "R" word and I'm so proud that he advocated for himself.
I love when she makes her little mouth noises. They’re so cute ❤️
Kelsey B , I call them her guppy noises like a little fish (guppy) blowing bubbles would sound,.
Delwyn Gugich so very true!! That’s cute!
Hello, I absolutely love the videos you all make. I'm only a year older than Abbie and I have autism as well. I'm still learning a lot through my different therapies as well. Watching your family has helped me a lot. I like to try and write comments sometimes, I was told it will help develop my writing skills and language because I have a lot of trouble with my words but I am very grateful to have learned what I know. You are all truly inspiring to watch and help me over come some of my big daily struggles. I have a lot of very noticeable Stims and actions that get stares in public so seeing you all say that we shouldn't have to change ourselves but others should learn to accept it is very important. Also, Isaiah is amazing and a great brother to Addie. I have two younger siblings but they have always made fun of me instead of help because of how different I seem. I get confused often and sometimes act a lot younger than I am. Thank you for the resourceful stuff you give away as well. I have a lot of sensory issues especially to sound and light so much so it can make it difficult to leave the house. I am home-schooled now because It was very hard for me to go to public schools here that do not have good systems for my needs. My mom was a special Ed teacher so that has also helped because she has a lot of knowledge in teaching people with my needs. Again, thank you for the daily inspiration and making me realize I am not Alone. (Sorry for the long comment but thanks for letting me practice my Typing, language, and speech skills here.)
I'd love a chance for these for my 8 year old non verbal lil guy...
I haven't watched your videos in a while, and coming back to the videos, Abbie has made so much amazing progress!! so proud of you guys
Welcome back!
I think the noise muffling headphones would really help with my sensory processing. I have a really hard time with loud noise, especially with a lot of people
Good luck!!!
I got ear defenders a few months ago and they're great! They really help in loud environments.
I am sensitive to noise and touch it triggers me and taste too if I taste something i don’t like it stays in the back of my throat and I get annoyed or want to cry and the taste stays there
My granddaughter Layla is 8 and so much like sweet Abby. She does not have anything to help relieve her anxiety and sensory overload and headphones like that would truly make her life better. Her mom, my daughter, is about to have another child and they would also help when the baby is crying. Thanks for selecting one of your fans to also benefit by them.
Thank-you for the reminder that I need to start working with our son, desensitizing with ear muffs. I would love a chance to win those. We have been using the noise canceling headphones we use for shooting. They work if he'll wear them but we need some his size. We are going to an event he loves in the Spring where they have all sorts of big trucks and he is great with them until they turn them on, I think the head phones would help. Abbie in the restroom with the hand dryer was adorable!!!
I just love Miss Abbie. I have a 19 year old son with Autism. I see soooo many similarities with him and Abbie. He has some additional physical disabilities that make it even more difficult to participate in social activities. I am so proud of the way you get Abbie out there. I am encouraged to do more to help my son assimilate to the world around him. Keep up the good work
I've written and deleted this comment three times because I don't know how to word it without sounding ignorant, please forgive me if this comes off wrong. The more I watch this channel the more amazed I am at Abbie because when I started watching, I didnt realize just how much she does understand, so when you ask something of her and she completely understands it astounds me. It is no wonder why frustration and "melt downs" and "over loads" happen, because she understands what's going on but cant process it like how we do. Thank you for spreading awareness. I love you guysa
That final video of Ab with the hand dryer was adorable!
(No headphones for me though. Just wanted to comment.)
I do not need the headphones BUT I swear I heard a yeah right after you ask if she was frustrated! I slowed it down and still hear it. Go to 5:30 and slow the speed down!!! I might be nuts but I totally hear it.
For lights we do polarized sunglasses. Love how positive this channel is.
I just want to say I love you family. My neice is autistic also.. i am one of three caregivers to her. I see many similar to between Abbie in my niece and love how you bring attention to autism. You talk about how Abbie like the feeling when she gags herself. My neice likes to hold her breath until she passes out bc she likes the feeling.. we had been in and out of the hospital. So we understand the gaging. Thanks for you time you put in to these videos.
Great idea. Our son was diagnosed last month and we are always looking for new ideas to help with sensory overload.
Your family is lovely ,playful cool, thankful, kind I love your family
The best way I can describe sensory overload is like this...when you look at a forest, you see a forest. When Autistic people look at a forest, we see every single leaf on every single tree, see every bird and squirrel, see every blade of grass moving in the wind, and smell all the smells and hear all the sounds ALL AT ONCE and we can not process all the information coming at as. In my life, I can't handle crowds, and lots of lights and movement. Concerts are hard, casinos make me CRAZY (all the lights and sounds and multicolored carpeting with weird patterns), festivals and parades make me nuts, shopping makes me anxious and angry...I am thinking Abbie probably feels a lot of the same things that I do, but can't vocalize it to you (as you know). I think you guys are great parents though! You are really trying to understand her, and that is great!
No headphones for the comment. Just wanted to say how cute the clip of lil Abby with the hand dryer was. Love love love seeing Abby sensory happy. It's hard to see her overloaded in the opposite direction but it's moving and poignant, bringing awareness and understanding to the outside world. Love everything you guys are doing.
Loved Abby with the hand dryer....pure joy...it's the simple things in life
my husband always walks around when ever he is talking on the phone so does our oldest son the ear muffs would be great for my 8yr old. who has asd he hates loud noises like the lawn mower, and some traffic sounds so walking to school some days can be fun. you are all doing a great job with Abby and spreading that awareness
I'm learning so much from you all, over the past few months of watching your all video, after learning that my niece little boy has autism. I have been sharing your all video with her in private messages through Facebook. I also told her to follow you all on Facebook, and RUclips etc.
Been watching for a little while! My son just got diagnosed with mild form of autism and sensory processing disorder. Your videos are so helpful for me to understand my son. Love your channel and your family!
Abby is a beautiful young lady and you are teaching her so much. You guys are wonderful parents.
Love seeing Abby as a little kid at the end of your video. She was having so much fun with the hand dryer. My son is an avoider so he hated the bathroom and still does.
Awe I love the end where Abbie is playing with the dryer! Great vlog. I love pots pans and Priscilla too. Awesome new lights for her channel! I seriously look forward to watching your vlogs everyday
I love how @7:25 X's album skins is on the TV. Abbie I didn't think I could love you more! X is my favorite artist too!❤😊❤😊❤❤
My sister and I both have autism but she has it worse. She is always losing her headphones (leaving them at school or leaving them at family’s house) . I really think that she will strive with the extra pair headphones and she will take on more responsibility of owning two pairs.
Love you guys you always make me happy when I have a bad day, thank you 💗💗
I am not wanting to take the headphones from someone who could really benefit from having them I simply wanted to say, Asa and Priscilla, you two produced beautiful children, truly. Of course, like others, I wish Abigail didn't have autism. But, verbal or not, when I watch her face, I see a spark...a spark of understanding and recognition. I think the young lady is much more aware of people and her surroundings than we know. I know you two will never give up on her. You are extraordinary parents with wonderful children. You are doing a positive thing by opening up your lives and, sharing.
I don't need the earmuffs, I usually just use headphones and listen to music, or a pair of my dad's old hunting ear protection things. Love the new lighting. Pinks, Oranges, and Reds are Abbie's colors. She looks lovely in all colors, but especially those ones. Love seeing how much she has approved over the years.
Please don’t pick me for the headphones...but I just HAD to comment about the “after the beep” today...SO gorgeous!! Abbie having an awesome time with the hand drier!! The world would be a better place I reckon if we just didn’t care about what others thought of us, and just did the things that gave us joy!! Abbie is the best teacher!!
I bought that brand for my son and he likes them a lot we go to the movies a lot and he seems to enjoy the movie when its not autism friendly now I had recently requested another order for my daughter and they are in back order...but they work I tried them myself makes the loudness verable for them
Asa, you are one amazing parent. I have never met( not that we have met in person, yet) anyone like you that has so much patience and understanding.
Have you ever thought of becoming an ABA therapist or Phsyciatric Councilor for Autism?
You would be awesome at it.
Abbie is one special girl to have you.
I hope to one day be able to have a meet and greet you you and your family.
Isiah is one awesome big brother to Abbie and I commend him for everything he does for her.
Thank you for another awesome video.
Thank you for being so supportive and understanding and informative. I’m struggling myself but since it’s not “obvious,” no one will take me seriously. These videos are all I have :)
the ending was super adorable, look at little Abbie... well not like she's not super adorable now.
Love your channel! As autistic adult I love the awareness that you guys create
The videos of little Abbie warm my heart so so much !!!
Adore your family! My daughter who has a brain injury and lives in FL at a rehab place would love these ear muffs! I actually had them on my list to get for her! Thanks for sharing your lives! Appreciate it!
I recently discovered sensory processing disorder through this channel and it has helped me learn so much about why I do things like stimming. I would really benefit from those earmuffs because I am a middle school student who has a really hard time with noises so I often am plugging my ears and having those would let me just be ok at school without looking utterly ridiculous.
Thank you for making these videos, They have helped me understand so much more. My 6 year old daughter is autistic. My daughter has a hard time with sounds outside of the house as well.
Abbie is doing so great getting back into her therapy and routine. With my son, being away for a few days can cause some regression and a rough few days back home.
The noise cancelling ear muffs would be amazing for my son who is 5 years old with autism. Loud noises cause him to panic and, as a result, we try to steer away from places that will have loud noises (fireworks, carnivals, parties, etc)
First of all love the Chanel so much, secondly am I the only one was saw xxx’s album in the background at 7:10
Wow! She did so well with the headphones! I have OCD and sensory overload sometimes comes with it, so I feel yah Abby! Y’all are great!
Hailey Brooke Yes. I have OCD also and I have a problem with everything sounding too loud. I often tell my husband to whisper because sounds literally hurt to hear!
Awww, so proud of her going to playlist live! Go Abbie!! Love how you guys push her but always so patient with her regarding things she struggles with. 👍🏻
Been watching yall for awhile and just want to say that Abbie is doing AWESOME!! My son also is autistic but is verbal, however his SPD is OUT OF CONTROL!! We are struggling to find the right things and therapies to help him cope with his sensory issues!! Would love to try out the headphones but get nervous about wasting money on them as he is kind of like abigail with things on his head! But Congrats to you all on Abbies progress!! Love watching your family and watching Abbie grow and accomplish so many new things!! Great job Maass Squad!!
I also am not commenting for the headphones. But just wanted to say that one of the big issues with Autism (it seems) is that it’s like the Whack-A-Mole game - you work hard to desensitize one thing and when there is success, another thing that wasn’t a problem before - becomes a sensory problem now. Whack-That-Mole - go Abbie!
I have a 5 year old autistic son, Avery! He looks like he is 7. He has a sensory processing issue and we find it hard to take him to certain places due to the surrounding sounds We are taking our fist Family vacation to bush gardens and these would be a great help. Thank you for offering them to your subscribers.
The little throwback clip at the end of Abbie with the hand dryer reminds me so much of my son. I have often had to pick him up because he won't leave when he discovers them.
That last second of the video!!!!! That smileeee 🥰😍😍= heart melt and all the feels!!!!!!
My daughter would love these! She’s seven and was diagnosed with autism a year and half ago! You guys are awesome and hope to meet you guys someday!
I would really like the headphones, Im nonverbal and autistic but Im also technially homeless so I dont have any money to get my own and I cant deal with any loud noises, so I cant go anywhere without having a meltdown. I love your channel and what you are doing to spread acceptance for nonverbal autism (Im getting help to write this so sorry if it is bad spelling)
So u can type but not talk sorry I'm just wondering
Oh wait sorry I didn't see the part that said u we're getting help to write that 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
Wow Abbie is doing so good. Also I remember we had someone with a disability (I don't know if it was autism or something else) come to the community center at least 2 times a week with her mentor and her mentor used the same technique you use for the headphones for winter gloves and it seems to work well for her I'm so I'm glad your showing off the technique so maybe other people ans try it and see if it works for there kids. Evening i use some wireless headphones that have decent sound blocking to block out sound some times. Especially at a concert or at the movie theater its helps alot when you have mild sensory issues.
Hi Abby, yourself and your family have taught me so much that I've been able to help my god daughter and her mum through there Autism diagnosis journey.
Headphones work amazing. We had struggles with him not wanting them on but we took him in public then put them on and he saw how the noise went away now he loves them. Good job Abby
Her little hops down the stairs are so cute! I never noticed how good she is with them at home!
**I** have sensory issues on glass elevators and I'm not even autistic. I completely understand, and I'm so sorry you had such a hard time, sweet girl. Not commenting for headphones. Keep being awesome guys! PS got my fatheringautism pullover hoodie and I'm super stoked and can't wait for the Abby's Art zip up hoodie to arrive!
I have always been a "walker" when on a phone. When we still had home phones connected to the walls, I always made sure we had the real long cords so I could pace and walk.
I love the way this was edited. The close up shots and intentional silent background (like no music) was so artistic!! I don’t need the earmuffs tho, I just wanted to comment :)
Watching your videos is honestly the highlight of my day!!
I worked with a company and performed aba therapy to children living with Autism. I got discouraged and found a new job. I have been binge watching abby and im compelled to apply again.
I've been watching your videos for quite a long time and I love how you and the others interact with her. Hopefully she will grow up beautifully and amazing 😍 With love from Malaysia 🇲🇾 ❤
Love y’all!! I talk about your videos at school all the time. The earmuffs would be great for my classroom!!
yes abby shes learned so much so proud
Everybody's so awesome with Abby
Those lights are sweet! Asa when I was little I remember that every time my mom would take me into the store after a minute the floor would start to look warped like they were little hills. It would start to look like a fun house mirror and I would have trouble walking and finding my place in space if that makes any sense. I would have to hold onto my mom because I felt like I would fall and couldn’t walk. I grew out of it but maybe sometimes other people with autism like Abby experience something similar?
That's awesome insight Jen!
Love the colors of the ear muffs. We just added noise reducing ear muffs to her IEP. I’m going to have to go check them out.
you guys are truly remarkable. Abbie is such a treasure
As I watch your video my daughter has the same sensory issues as Abbie. I’m in Florida as well
The ENDING! How darling was THAT!!!
I love Abby. She is so inspirational
My sister with autism would appreciate the headphones. She starting to have sensory to loud noises too. Love this blog!! Love you all
Y’all family is so Beautiful
I've mentioned it before but I do get motion sickness from your videos, so most of the time I have to just listen ha ha! But never change...I love you guys...need my fathering autism fix every day xx
You guys are amazing roles for everyone who is watching
l look up to you guys due my son is almost 3 and we have been doing Auslan sign language as he is still not talking much
Keep up the great work guys you are awesome 😃
I have autism and have a A college degree in turf management /greens keeper I worked really hard for it I know your daughter Probably won’t ever go to college but just the Small things you guys are doing to her now would really help her as she gets older and Maybe she can grow out of having to use ear pugs I know when I was younger I didn’t use to like loud noises Very much but when I got older they don’t bother me now I’m around loud equipment all day in the summer that is why I watch your Channel Keep up the great work
I would really like to try the earmuffs. I have ASD and I use earbuds but they just don’t always do the trick.
Hi, have semi-verbal autism and don't go anywhere without my ear defenders, they have made my world so much more accessible. If Abbie can be desensitized to them (and likes wearing them) it could really help her cope with auditory stimulation.
My son Andy uses headphones every single day at school and at home as needed. We currently take the one pair we have back and forth from school to home, so a second pair to keep at home and sending one to school to keep would make things a lot easier! (they have been forgotten before) Thank you for the opportunity to win :)
5:41 I love that mouth clicking stim of hers it's so cute! Do you guys have a name for it? That chewy is so cute with her Abigail lanyard on it 🤗
DUDE! I was just thinking about Abbie’s gagging behavior and when I was little, long before I was diagnosed with ASD, my aunt and I had a game called gag the baby. ...that sounds like child abuse but I swear I wanted it, I’d run up to her and stick my tongue out and she’d stick her fingers in my mouth and I’d gag and nearly throw up and then laugh and laugh! ...There’s no way I can make that sound normal. Anyways thought I’d share.
My 3 year old grandson has autism and he freaks out with any busy, loud places! I adore your family ❤️
I deal with sensory processing issues because of my Tourette Syndrome. I went to a dance tonight at my university and had to leave early because all the noise and lights and people moving around made me feel so anxious, disoriented, and unsteady. My sensory issues wax and wane just like my tics, so I can never be sure when I'll have a situation like tonight's. It can get pretty stressful.
I love that Abbie LOVES her elephant! You guys are such an awesome family!
Those are some good ear muffs. My sensory issues are similar to abbie is what I realised thro the playlist live videos. But she loves lights and load places and I hate Hoover's haha, not me. I love you guys so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for probing autism isn't a barrier when living life:)
That little video at the end of Abbie and the hand dryer!!!! Soooooo cute!!!!!☺💟😊
I work in a special needs classroom with kiddos with a wide range of sensory issues. This would be a perfect addition to the classroom to keep on hand!!
I have panic disorder and wearing headphones helps me cope with my sensory issues. Sometimes the world is too loud and so is my mind. I wonder if these would help me during panic. Love the video
This is my first time commenting on your video (no im not aiming for the headphone 😅) I LOVE YOU GUYS SO SO MUCH!! YOU ARE THE BEST PARENTS EVER FOR ABBIE ❤️❤️ Abbie progressed a lot. Like A LOT. Ive watched some of your old videos and Ive seen you guys struggled and so is Abbie. But now look at her 😭😭😭 So proud of you guys!! You guys are so blessed ❤️❤️
I would love those headphones because I’m currently a new teacher in a classroom of children 3 to 5 with varying level of needs, sensory processing disorder, autism (different parts of the spectrum) etc...right now we are using old adult sized computer headphones with the cords cut and they just don’t work the way they should. I hope as my career continues, I’m able to get the resources I need. It’s hard working with kids and not having the funds to get what I need. Love your videos ❤️
Good job abbie with the headphones/earmuffs.im surprised she liked the dryer.my nephew is autistic and he didn’t like them because of the loud noise.he didn’t even want to go into restrooms.every child is so different
Great video! I 💗 the bits of Abby when she was younger!
My niece has a lot of problems with loud noises. We tried so many different ear cancellation ear phones and nothing has worked so far. We cant even take her to the movies and she's going to be 8 very soon. I want to give her that wonderful opportunity to be able to experience concerts, movies, loud crowds at Disney so she can handle this. It breaks my heart 😢
I might have to try though ear muffs, my son. He has a lot of issue with "loud" noises and if it too bright/ sun light. Which is every day since we live in Central Florida. I do the same thing, the walking and talking thing. Lol
I've been dealing with really bad sensory processing issues, which gives me really bad anxiety and flares my chronic headaches and stomachaches.
I've tried earmufs before, but as my parents are pretty poor, they were bad quality.
School is hard those times, today I had a sensory meltdown just because people were tapping their pencils on the desks (I am not in the autism classes yet, and I am not allowed to have music, only earmufs or earplugs that are too expensive for me and my parents.)
I am going to see my pediatrician soon, and ask if there's therapy for sensory processing disorder, but it's been 3 years that I've been trying to get help for various mental and physical issues.
Your channel helped me understand myself more and more, and I am not afraid to stim of have a meltdown in public anymore (My parents shames me for it), but It's just part of who I am, of how I am working. I started laughing softly when Abbie was rocking, as I am doing myself trying to calm myself from my current pain in my leg 😂😂
I love your videos❤❤
Thank you for showing these little clips of ABA someting me and my husband can try with our son we live in Texas and my sons insurance wont cover it and its really expensive but he needs it thank you again for these
Omg the videos of when she was little makes my heart melt. ❤️
I'd love to have those headphones for my special needs classroom. I teach Kindergarten special education and I have several students with sensory processing issues. Loud noises are a huge issue for some of them at times especially when we have to go into the lunchroom, gym, or assemblies. Right now we just use regular headphones with the cords cut off just to give them a little relief. These would be a game changer!
Abbie's freckles are adorbs! She is doing so well with getting used to her headphones! 👍😊❤️️(also no headphones for me! I don't need them, just wanted to comment 😊) I walk and talk too Asa! This made me laugh "Nobody cares about the mayor debate." 😂😂
This form of therapy (slowly getting Abbie acclimated to noise and stairs) is very helpful and is essentially ERP (Exposure & Response Prevention) which is how my OCD therapy works. It's difficult and uncomfortable at first but has great results!
I am mildly autistic and i love watching these videos. It makes me feel not alone
