Teenager Learning Her Name - Nonverbal Autism Communication Deficit

  • A teenager learning her name. It sounds absurd that Abbie is 13 and can't use sign language to say her own name but if you think about it what everyday use does it have for her? We don't go around speaking in third person so teaching her to communicate her name has always been a challenge because there is no reinforcer for it. We could change the sign so it's not as similar to bath but eventually we would run out of sign gestures because of her limited muscle control for more complex movements. She still thinks it means "bath" but we will keep trying.

I remember you saying you cut back on Abbie's sugar. Sometimes cutting back on such substances can lead to withdrawal insomnia. The brain is missing the rewards from the substance. well it might also have to do with autism in general.. now in my case i have a different forme of autism but i am also an insomniac.. if a noise around the house wakes me when i'm about to fall asleep i won't sleep for the whole night till it gets light outside wich is when suddenly my brain decides oh lights out.. though in my case my added ADHD might also be the cherry on the cake as often i also continuously think about stuff.. now usually with ADHD it goes from one thing to another however when this happens my autism peeks around the corner and slams that repeat button like a maniac.. so i end up looping the same thoughts in my super tired state causing my brain to race over and over and making me unable to sleep..

and it can help your child sleep through the night.
and it can help your child relax their muscles, as anxiety causing teeth clench and other things.

SN: my son was diagnosed with autism when he was 3 years old (now 10). I am a single mom raising him on my own. I also have a 6 year old daughter (who isn’t autistic). And this helps me sooo much to try and explain all the W’s to my daughter about her brother. There is soooo much know about autism cause each child is different but the same. So thank you so very much for showing me that it’s okay to be overwhelmed and to try different ways to make it just a little bit better for my son. And for your son to show that having a sibling with special needs is completely okay and to not care what people think ♥️♥️

It's so amazing to see you guys parent and I relate so much to your stories, especially the waking up early lol! I get my son and bring him back to bed and he ends up picking on his daddy too 😂 Abbie is a beautiful person, she's so smart and so capable. I always feel parents who have autistic children (special needs children in general) need to hear supportive and positive things. You guys are rockstar parents and you inspire my husband and I to stay strong we have our son, a daughter who is a year younger than he is and she talks to him and it helps them learn to communicate better and she helps him learn, too it's a beautiful bond they have, they're both anxiously excited about their new baby sister and my son was actually able to say "beautiful baby!" When we got our 20 week ultrasound 😭❤️ sorry I don't have anyone else to talk to who would understand how it is to parent an autistic child.

We started talking with my daughter sign language when she was born. I have 2 Aunts that are deaf and they would watch her for us. She didn't learn to speak until she was around 5-6. My daughter is 17 now. She can speak fluent English but she prefers to still speak sign.
My son has some special issues and didn't start speaking until he was 6. We started sign with him at birth also but it didn't start sticking with him until he was around 4. The difference between the sign with our daughter and our son was night and day though. She could complete conversations and he would tell you basic needs only.
I do think speaking out loud and signing at the same time is very important though.

aleana Reynolds I have friends who start all of their children with sign language as early as possible. Whether with disabilities or not, it helps with their language development by making communication connections between child and parents. They start with basic ones like “more” for more food, “done” for done with food, “no” “dog” they have dogs in their house. I believe there are some videos for baby sign language on RUclips.

I've watched other bloggers with kids who have non-verbal autism and the way they handle it by yelling at them, and a couple of them refer to their child as "the kid with autism" and it made me appreciate your blog and what you do for the autism community. I myself don't have any kids with it but the reason I love your vlog is because in this day in age I love seeing the positivity and the desire to help others.

it was refreshing to hear parents teaching couping skills and working with their children. I feel so many parents try to take the easy way out like using service dogs. don't get me wrong service dogs are great but tethering a child to a dog is dangerous for everyone. Great job to both of you. You got a new subscriber Abbie is so darn cute. you can see how intelligent and deep her soul runs through her eyes!

I also want to say you have amazing children, no matter how challenging your daily life maybe at times.

I'm so happy there is other parents out there who know the struggle of going into stores and being stared at my son is 4 he's a hyper functioning autistic child and is also delayed developentmentally as well so when we go to a store he freaks out or has meltdowns either it's too loud or too much for him to take in seeing these videos gives me comfort knowing there are others out there. Thank you for flogging.

I feel that Educating all Emergency responders on all forms of Intellectual Disabilities would be a good thing so often people do not know how to react in these cases. Abby seems like she is having difficulties not unlike a teenager but different. Glad she still enjoys going out in the community though I worked with a girl and she grew to not liking to go out. hope you have a great day.

Abby is SOOOO beautiful and smart and I love her so much! Ive been volunteering with multiple different developmental disability communities both at school and in my community and seeing videos like this helps me understand autism so much better. Every kid/adult is different but this gives me a great basis to help other kids like Abby. Also, Isiah is probably the best brother in the whole world!

I need to learn to self regulate my anger and frustration and anxiety. I dont pick up early enough that im getting really overwhelmed and then i self harm. Maybe i just expect more of myself than i can actually deal with and that pushes me to high distress. Then i can seem to calm myself down.

Have you thought about raising her sign name so it's up on her cheek/chin area? Or SimComming more so she has extra exposure to signs?
ASL is my primary mode of communication and I still get signs mixed up if they are similar

    • @aridill
      @aridill 5 лет назад +3

an a at the cheek can mean menstruation and other ASL words. It is best to have a Deaf individual give Abby her sign name (if they wanted to change it), but the one she has is one of the places where neutral sign names go. And way to go on this family for helping Abby communicate!!! Abby works so hard every day. She is killing it!
