Nice. I like the no nonsense tutorial videos like this. Handy to figure out why every HDF I was making refused to work. Forgot to change the tooltype of HDToolBox!
Everything here worked a treat except to the point where I 'Define a New Drive Type', read configuration and click 'OK'. It reported with VOLUME WORKBENCH 3.1 IS FULL Someone else had this problem but they were given the solution which is to copy the HDToolbox program into the RAM disk and run it from there. Thankyou for this video, I now have exactly what I wanted!
@@EnjoyThePOKEY Actually I had copied and pasted the other chap's query on here and didn't notice he had put workbench instead of install. I guess I was just so happy to get it all up and running because I can now view documents and listen to music I wrote 30 years ago. Such an amazing trip down memory lane!
Hi. This FFS option allows faster reading and open directories, files, icons, drawers..., and more visible effects on floppy disks than on hard disks. Then PFS came ... and you could forget about FFS :)
@@EnjoyThePOKEY AmigaOS manuals tell: "Using the directory cache is not recommended for hard drives, only in very special cases should this option be activated.", so I wouldn't turn it on for HDs. AFAIK it improves directory listing speed (which was a problem with floppies), but it doesn't affect to read speed of files and it actually slows down writing operations. It's also been said to be unreliable with HDs...
@@JellyPowered That's what I meant by mentioning floppy disks, but I always used it on a real HDD in the days of FFS and stopped after changing filesystem to PFS. Even if there were no measurable advantages, I didn't notice any discomfort from it either. Question is: can concerns about using this option on a real HDD be applied to an HDF file? I don't known 🤔
Help, my new partioned drives didn't show up after reset. I saved changes to the drive but when I did a resetit booted from the install disk. It only shows Ram disk and df0: When I open HDtoolbox it shows the drive is partitioned but they don't show on workbench.
@@fourbypete I take it you mean WinUAE and plugged hdf's? Try running WinUAE 'as administrator'. I checked this tutorial now after so many years and it still works, although today I do it a little differently because I use PFS3 :) All partitions appear on Workbench.
@@fourbypete Strange. Only thing I can think of is that you are making hdf too big and then you need to use loadmodule and scsi.device. How big is your hdf and how big is first partition?

HDToolbox on a disk with Workbench? Weird. It has always been on Install disk. I guess this is not original disk image? :)

Which Amiga? What system? What kickstart? What size disk? What filesystem? :)
@@EnjoyThePOKEY All excellent questions. Amiga 1200, on Windows 10 latest build. Kickstart 3.1and fast filesystem international mode.
