The Elder is phenomenal. I absolutely love and always have loved it. I don't have to compare it to anything. It stands on its own. It is well written, well produced, and tells a good story. Fan since 75.
The Elder is a top 5 KISS album for me, and I totally understand every negative feeling towards it. There is no good reason this album should exist. It was born out of desperation and delusions of grandeur, and the various track listings and lack of the recorded dialogue (except for the finale) confirm nobody had a clear cut vision for how the story should play out. All that being said, when I was growing up and would read Behind the Mask for instance, I would read where the band would trash certain songs or albums, The Elder being the prime example. But for me, that only made me more intrigued by them and made me want to seek them out and hear it for myself. Like Jason mentioned, I am FAR more likely to play The Elder in my car than Destroyer, just because the more popular songs and albums are burned into my brain, and don't fascinate me as much. For me, the "dark times" of KISS have a weird mystique about them, and fascinate me as a fan to dig deeper. Sorry for the long-winded response lol, but GREAT episode guys! Always love the discussion, and y'all had me cracking up the whole time hahaha!
I like the elder and I play it quite a bit more than many other kiss albums. I think Paul had a lot of guts to sing that falsetto. It’s different for kiss and I like that. Reminds me of dungeons and dragons that was popular then. It’s fantasy. I do think it needed to be a double album to complete the story. Another album I like a lot is Soul Station. I grew up with those songs too on am radio repeats in the 70’s. I think people will appreciate it later. I’m grateful we can all still talk about the band we enjoy and that most of them are still here with us. My best memory of the elder was watching them on fridays on my portable black and white tv in my room staying up late. Thanks for another fun show!
I love The Elder. A total folly but there's something quite charming about it i think. Love Joe in this episode. If they ever do another version of "A Christmas Carol" Ebenezer lives in Detroit. 🤣
It's in my top 10 favorite kiss studio albums of all time . All killers no fillers... Is no skipping here. Unlike many other kiss studio albums that followed this Kiss release in 1981 .where there is a lot of skipping......just saying, time-line is everything, and to this day I love listening to that record.Again, it think it is a lot better than lots of other kiss studio albums that came after it. Great discussion guys. Brings back a lot of memories of me defending kiss in shool back then , to all my class and shool mates. Thank you. P.s.Joe was not a ray of sunshine on this episode. We will forgive 🙏 him. Cheers.
10th thumbs up from me and I haven't even watched it yet!!! Thanks to Jason Herndon for sending me my auction win, of Ace Frehley's Space Invader 5th Anniversary Purple Promo Vinyl!!! Peace out from the Southern Tip of Vancouver Island, B.C. CANADA
Odyssey is a great song. As a hobby musician it was a lot of fun to record a personal version of it and make it much havier with Metallica style riffs. Like the fantasy lyrics and love the Kiss version. But my favourite song is Only you.
Dave - I'm with you!! It was for me too the first KISS album I bought as it was released, having become a fan in 1979 but unaware of Unmasked being released. For me the album is fantastic, I play it all and appreciate it for what it is. To summarise - "Joe.....wrong!!"
Fanfare - Skip Just A Boy - Skip Odyssey - Skip Only You - Play Under The Rose - Play Dark Light - Skip AWWH - Play The Oath - Play Mr. Blackwell - Play EFTI - Play I - Play
Nicholas makes a point that some fans who likes this album thinks of themselves as being "elite", if I understand him correctly. Sorry if I don't. However - when he said it I was thinking - hmm, maybe it's actually the other way around, and Joe actually makes that valid when he later says; if at this point any Kiss fans is still left watching... What I actually love about Kiss is the diversity. I love all kinds of music; Jazz, Classical, Metal, World music etc... So having Rock and Roll Over spinning one day and then The Elder the next to me is just a bonus. I love The Elder - it's a fantastic album. Is it a great Kiss album - I think so - because I don't just want Duece, Coming Home or Love Gun. But I get that it is not Hotter Than Hell. But that's not what I am looking for. I am looking for music in general. The arrangement and voicings for example in Fanfare are really well made. Fav. tracks on the album; Only You, Under The Rose, Mr. Blackwell and the others. Great album.
I absolutely love the demeanor in the voice over for the Elder commercial. It's has such an early 80's Horror Trailer vibe to it. One of those clips that just warm your heart. For me, the ELDER is very much a seasonal record. Always a November / Fall record for me, and not one I can put on and just jam a few tracks out., This is one of those records (personal opinion only) that have to be played from beginning to end, and really only 'feels good' on vinyl. You need the crackles & pops to take in the whole experience. This is one Box Set I'm hoping gets made. Very cool choice for Skip or Play. Have a good week. Thanks for the hard work. Take care.
Ace Frehley on Special K? Wait....wasn't that a cereal like Wheaties? I don:t think Ace ever did Special K. But always thought Don't Run/Dark Light smacked of Ace sounding like he was on day 4 of a very heavy coke binge.
I love Music from The Elder. It is a masterpiece and KISS members shouldn't be ashamed of it. We not the great paintings of the classic famous artist at their time not good however as time went by now they are priceless
A World Without Heroes is a great song. With the exception of the video, the song itself is deep and sentimental. If anything, it has a bittersweet nostalgia for Kiss' hey-day of the original four. It was Gene's homage to Peter Criss due to his absence in a low-key kind of way imo.
Have you guys heard "Ancient Door-A Tribute to Music from the Elder" by Chris Borjars? I've been listening to this more than the original album. Very good production. 🤘😝🤘
I was 21 when this came out - hadn't bought Unmasked before that - threw up my hands after Dynasty just because they were aiming for the much younger kids with all the toys and stuff- but this - oh dear - I actually listened to the entire thing ONCE - played "I" about 4 or 5 times and then never touched it again. I don't even own this on CD lol. But to each his or her own
I fucking loved this episode. I'm somewhere in between Dave Scott and Joe. I love some songs from this album and I hate some of the songs on this album with a passion. I love that Joe even participated in this episode knowing that he basically hates the album. So thanks for coming on Joe. Your curmudgeon reaction is always well appreciated. Groovy.
Fantastic episode Gents, been waiting a while for this one. Also extremely entertaining banter. Good to have the Buckland clips back. I'd go with The Oath, I, Dark Light and World Without Heroes as play and likely skip the rest. Looking forward to the next episode.
I’ll try NOT to be long winded on this … best episode I’ve seen in a LONG time!! Joe is great. He had me cracking up the whole time with his disgust of the album 😂 I think it has to do with where you were at that time and if the songs made any kind of impact on you personally. I think changing it to the original track sequence didn’t do it many favors The Oath leading that off was perfect followed by Fanfare and Just a boy. To me it was putting headphones on and having this little medieval journey. I listen to it a lot even to this day and LOVE it more everytime I listen to it. I think it was a genius piece of work Ace’s solo on Dark Light…wow!!! That staccato picking at the end…. I can’t pick a favorite I seriously love all of them. Only thing I was wishing during this show was that I was on there with you talking about this album 😂😂 Keep up the awesome work guys!!!
I’ve been a KISS fan since 77 but I didn’t hear this until the 97 cd remasters and maybe it’s because it doesn’t have the burn out factor I classify this as one of my favorite KISS lps. I can’t listen to the first record anymore because I’ve heard those songs a million times a million different ways but The Elder still always sounds fresh.
Absolutely a high watermark for the band artistically speaking. It's just that same old story "wrong album released at the wrong time". I'm on board with Jason every step of the way. This albums triumphs outweigh its shortcomings for sure. A Masterpiece, it's just not Dressed To Kill that's all.
Dave great comment about loving something and the time and place. You know in the back of your mind that everyone else does not like (insert your favorite), but you're also "bound" by what your heart is telling you and that wins every time. For me (Rob) H.I.T.S. is that way. Its in my top 5 KISS albums all day long (Elder is in my top 10 by the way). I know that other think I'd be insane to put Love Gun behind it. My attachment to LG is not personal. Sure it's a great album... however H.I.T.S. was my first KISS album and that's where the love factor comes in as you were saying. The Elder for me was like the 5th or 6th album i bought once i became a fan, so that is special as well. It doesn't "make sense to others" and you can even say i know honestly where it should be ranked... but you can't because your history and you love for it takes over.
A last point... you cannot take Gene and Paul's assessment of the Elder at face value. Paul in particular measures the quality of ANY of his songs not by artistic merit but by "box office." Money is the measure. So for Paul, it doesn't matter if the Elder is good or not, or whether he had a good time making it or not. He never discusses that. He only discusses fan reaction, and fan reaction is based on sales. We're talking about the guy who brought disco to Kiss. Why was IWMFLY good and Elder bad? Money, only money. Nobody here is discussing that Gene and Paul DO play these songs on their Kiss Kruises. Why? Because that's the one scenario where they get they finally get positive financial and fan feedback for non-hits such as songs from The Elder. They've come back to The Elder because there's box office attached to it. It's not dreck if it sells. So Joe is missing this point. He speaks about G&P looking back in hindsight and criticizing The Elder for its CREATIVE failure when the reality is they only dismissed The Elder for its FINANCIAL failure. If it suddenly went platinum you can bet the farm G&P would be out saying what innovative thinkers they were in 1981.
I believe that the first time I heard this album was the late ‘90’s. I grew up in the ‘80’s and my first album was Alive II. Then, in ‘88 I got Smashes, Thrashes, & Hits. I never had to experience the decision of whether I liked the 70’s or 80’s more. My teen years were in the ‘90’s . When I turned 15 and had a full time job after school and on the weekends, I went back and picked up what I could find. We had no record stores, just a Walmart and Kmart who had a shitload of cd’s. But you noticed quickly that if you were looking for Dio albums in ‘94 there would be 15 Strange Highways and 2 Holy Divers. It was the same for bands like Pink Floyd. They’d have 6 copies of Dark Side Of The Moon, and four of The Wall. I remember, the cheapest I could find The Wall was $45 at Kmart. It was crazy back then. So, back to the Elder. Even though my first copy had the song out of order, I loved the sound and concept. I enjoyed it because it was different from what I’d heard from them. Under the Rose, and A World Without Hero’s really stuck out for me. Then, I came to love the rest of the album too. I don’t care what fans, the band, or any else says. When I got the ‘97 remaster with songs in correct order, that made it even more enjoyable for me. Sorry Paul, I love this album for what it is. A great concept album. I would have liked to have more material, and made it into a double album. Rock on! 🤘
This is an awesome episode! (Music From) "The Elder" (I can't type that without punctuation)...so many memories! I was 7 when it came out and a DIEHARD KISS fan. I was so devastated when Peter left, as he was my favorite. My brother got the album for Christmas '81 and I was equally intrigued and confused! I was smart enough to know what a "concept album" was...but WHAT IS THE CONCEPT?!? Did a movie called "The Elder" exist?!? There was no Internet to ask! I wanted to hate The Fox but...these drums sound cool! I still remember listening to it on Mom and Dad's stereo... All in all, it's a great and bold album. 9/10 for me! Cheers from Detroit Rock City!! 😎 🎸
Welcome back, Nicolas! I'd love to talk Queen with you sometime. Do you have a channel? Great episode, guys. I'm a fan of The Elder, but also realize it was a massive misstep for the band. It's one of those projects that shouldn't have been made, but I'm glad it was because I do enjoy it.
I know most people love Aces solo on dark light. Maybe because it’s different than everything else he’s done. I don’t care for it. In the middle he plays the same note for 13 seconds. Plus there are bongos in the background.
You can't truly evaluate the Elder, certainly not how it was experienced at the time, without getting the original release where the tracks are out of order. the original was ordered like a rock record, with the most likely hits at certain points with no regard the album's story. The 1990s rerelease put the songs in their story order. So no one originally started the album with Fanfare.
I see what you’re saying, but the early Queen albums were Queen being themselves, this is KISS manufacturing a sound to try and impress the critics. Queen/Queen II for their triumphs and faults were genuine. I didn’t get the same feeling from Under The Rose.
Absolutely love The Elder and have since it came out. None of my friends did, but I did. Give a dozen or more spins a year even now. I tried to get through this vid but the hate from Joe is just insufferable. A far worse experience than anything on the album itself.
Ive always liked the album but have always felt that it lacked direction. As a RUSH fan, too, they were definitely not on the same page as far as what RUSH was playing. Ace definitely knew they were in trouble.
What would have happened if Ezrin/KISS produced Revenge in 1981? I think it would have bombed. There was NOTHING that KISS could do at that point that would have been successful, but if Revenge had happened, they would like fight for it now, but... who knows?
I Totally disagree with much of the criticism of this recorded, especially from Joe. I love this record a lot actually. Are there bad songs? YES... but the good ones are not the one many of you said, SKIP.... I believe this record is way better than anything KISS has released as of late. Monster for me is their worst record.........
Look what he did with Pink Floyd !!!! /yes but that was another level of songs he sure did some magic on Destroyer if you listen to those demos from destroyer/ dont take away anything from The Elder but the demos he had to work with where not The Wall /
Gene and Paul are certainly no Roger Waters. I did enjoy Ezrin’s work on Destroyer and Revenge. Great production. You nailed it. If the songs suck, no producer is gonna fix that. As they say, you cannot polish a turd.
I think Odessey's okay because it makes me think of ELO. It seemed really out of place in its original sequence (which was released later), but it works best as how Casablanca resequenced it - with Odessey right before I.
The most cringr-worthy part of "I" is the instrumental break during which they clap their hands and the bass riff suggest "victory on parade". It's awful.
The Elder is phenomenal. I absolutely love and always have loved it. I don't have to compare it to anything. It stands on its own. It is well written, well produced, and tells a good story. Fan since 75.
The piano in Odyssey is amazing. That alone makes that song a play. Great melody. Also the solo is great.
I love THE ELDER since it came out, amazing Album!
💥Nice Works. I recently cracked open a 2014 MFTE & have really been digging it. The studio version of “WORLD WITHOUT HEROES” is Outstanding.💥

Hi Jason, I wanted to say I absolutely love this album. I agree it’s quite different album for KISS but I think that’s part of what makes it so fun!
IMO, The Elder is their best album.
Oh so you are elite
Odyssey is a great song. As a hobby musician it was a lot of fun to record a personal version of it and make it much havier with Metallica style riffs. Like the fantasy lyrics and love the Kiss version. But my favourite song is Only you.
Only you are great 👍if I am not wrong that Doro girl did a good cover of it😎

I should add that the tracklist that kicks off with 'The Oath' works better musically (even if it does create storyline confusion).
Is it possible to further confuse a confused storyline? ;)
@@kinetic74 Hahaha fair point!
Joe is dead inside though
Fanfare - Skip
Just A Boy - Skip
Odyssey - Skip
Only You - Play
Under The Rose - Play
Dark Light - Skip
AWWH - Play
The Oath - Play
Mr. Blackwell - Play
EFTI - Play
I - Play
Love The Elder, definitely play
I brush my teeth to "Music from the Elder" and I bought 10 copies on the first day!

I’m hard to understand. Sometimes I need other people to explain to me what I was talking about. 🤣
Take care.
For me, it’s a Fall record. I’m always hoping the record with fall off the turntable onto the floor. ;)
@@kinetic74 HaHa!
So you're saying The Elder is actually KISS's "Mona Lisa"? ;)
"Bob Ezrin didn't like Ace's lute playing..."
Dave, that was comedy gold!!! Still giggling
A World Without Heroes is a great song. With the exception of the video, the song itself is deep and sentimental. If anything, it has a bittersweet nostalgia for Kiss' hey-day of the original four. It was Gene's homage to Peter Criss due to his absence in a low-key kind of way imo.

Under The Rose / Mr Blackwell/ Only you/ if I had to choose one more I go with A world without heroes/ Those are the best songs in my opinion😎
I always thought The Elder was similar to Lord Of The Rings in what little bit of story line we get.
Fantastic episode Gents, been waiting a while for this one. Also extremely entertaining banter. Good to have the Buckland clips back. I'd go with The Oath, I, Dark Light and World Without Heroes as play and likely skip the rest. Looking forward to the next episode.
Hopefully also for my intelligent discourse, it can't be all about the clips! Or am I just the "court jester"? ;)

@@kinetic74 Yes sir!
I would compare The Elder to Queen 2....as Kiss Unmasked is probably comparable to Hot Space
Let me guess....
Joe's two desert island picks would be
The Peter Criss Solo Album
AND
The Elder
I know most people love Aces solo on dark light. Maybe because it’s different than everything else he’s done. I don’t care for it. In the middle he plays the same note for 13 seconds. Plus there are bongos in the background.
Have you guys heard anything about the New Years Eve packages?I have emailed loads of people and haven’t heard anything. Love the channel. Thanks
The original cover for Double Platinium was Silver/ chrome/ mirror/ 😎
The copy that Dave purchased is the insanely rare Australian white double platinum which sells for close to $3000 today.
So let me get this straight… Joe doesn’t like the Elder? That wasn’t quite made clear enough…. Lol geesh.Joe clearly did not want to do this one
'The Elder' E.P might have been a better idea :)
Only the Kiss album I like.
Dave, what is that Hooligan shirt you’re wearing?
Something I made, I wanted to see if I could make a series.
Wow Nicholas you don’t seem to like the elder , how do you like the early Queen Lps then ? After you don’t like under the rose ?
I see what you’re saying, but the early Queen albums were Queen being themselves, this is KISS manufacturing a sound to try and impress the critics. Queen/Queen II for their triumphs and faults were genuine. I didn’t get the same feeling from Under The Rose.
1:06:05 - 1:06:10 Here's to phuck-n-suck songs 🍾🍷🥂
Absolutely love The Elder and have since it came out. None of my friends did, but I did. Give a dozen or more spins a year even now. I tried to get through this vid but the hate from Joe is just insufferable. A far worse experience than anything on the album itself.
your friends were right. it's terrible. thanks for watching.
I agree with one thing you said. MONSTER truly is awful. Can’t wait to record THAT episode. 🤣
As they say, you cannot polish a turd.
all hard skip. and burn the copy
😅😅😅😅Don't be subtle, tell us how you really feel - it's OKAY to express yourself here. You won't be cancelled 🤣
Dave is right on everything with this. And Joe is so wrong, fire him ;)
Agreed
When is the next episode?
It's up now!
I think Odessey's okay because it makes me think of ELO. It seemed really out of place in its original sequence (which was released later), but it works best as how Casablanca resequenced it - with Odessey right before I.
Overall skip
This is one of the 4 worst Kiss albums. The Elder, Psycho Circus, Sonic Boom and Monster all suck.
The most cringr-worthy part of "I" is the instrumental break during which they clap their hands and the bass riff suggest "victory on parade". It's awful.
