Good evening Russ, Salute to those who worked the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)! Those young men worked very hard to make it possible for us to enjoy this beautiful country all these years later. I have to wonder how many younger individuals would sign up in todays world. Oh wait, I remember you running into a couple workers back in Arizona on the beginning of this trip working hard. I think it would do a lot of young folk some good to do some hard manual labor. Glad you stopped here. See You Soon!
At 1:54, he passes our driveway, on the left. We overlook the Columbia. We came over from the West side of WA state and it is a very different way of life, but we like it.
I am a Tacoma native who has lived at Kettle Falls. I live down here in the Tri-Cities, but want to return one of these days. I absolutely love it up there.
Little did you know that you were in Sasquatch Country! lol. Back in Kettle Falls we have Sasquatch pushing grocery carts at our one and only grocery store. Big Foot Trucking, the motif is everywhere because they live everywhere up here. Good deer and turkey hunting, lots of water for them. Actually I'm not kidding. It's a hot spot. I've had 3 experiences myself. You probably don't want to see one. Unless you're wearing a Depends...lol
Very interesting CCC storyboards. They said that of the $30 they paid them each month (plus room and board) they had to send $25 home to their families. And "the money sent home each month helped many American families get through the hard times." Maybe we should do something like that in these hard times. :)
In Holland, you GOTTA go see the wooden shoe store. That entire area is absolutely beautiful. And nearby is the Jeep rental, so you can ride in Jeep’s on the sand dunes
You are certainly doing a lovely road trip with what seems to be with total freedom to choose where, when, how, what time, where to walk and fly the drone, where to stop and have a coffee break etc. Beautiful country around that area. I enjoyed driving through it myself in my 1969 VW campervan back in 1988.
What a great virtual vacation! Can't wait for each day to see it. My dad was in the ccc's in Minnesota when he was a teen. I still have his metal trunk.
Wow, at 3:09, it is amazing how hard it is to see the homes that are there, with the drone. We are on a clearing to the right but because the house is brown, it blends in with the background. That is probably a good thing, keeping it natural. The drones do give you a nice territorial view of the areas you are in. Really gives him a nice feel for the area he is in. Hope he does that at Ross lake, going down Rainy Pass, the other side of WA. It is stunning!
Russ, I must tell you that your Pacific Northwest Trip of 2020 has helped me through this terrible 6 month quarantine, & now smoke & fires here in CA. I love the views, the simple pace you've kept, and most importantly, your pleasant sayings and remarks. I look forward to every single video of yours!! Please be safe going through CA on your way home!!
Love the scenery out there! Nothing like that around here in St Louis Missouri area. Enjoying seeing the mountains and pine forests! Take Care and we'll be waiting for the next great video of this awesome road trip!👍😃
Yes Sherman pass is so pretty, this pass gets it share of snow. Enjoy the scenery, I love the drone time too , very interesting when you fly drone time.Stay safe ... Larry&Linda
My uncle worked at a CCC camp in Arkansas. He sent his money home to help the family survive. The CCC & the WPA were both good work programs. The WPA build a lot of schools & state park sites in Arkansas. Sherman Pass gets shut down in the winter for a few months. My wife & I are enjoying the Virtual Vacation 2020 series, but had to jump ahead to see the Washington videos. Thanks for sharing your trips!
Sherman Pass has one of the few Tamarac forests of the USA. the Tamarac tree is most often found in clumps or lone trees but along the road is an entire forest of Tamarac.
lived in Vancouver Wa for yr when I was 18 lots to do n see around there! last yr travelled up the Columbia from Portland east heading back east from 2 mo vacation thru out the west that's a got to do! amazing following L/C trail must have been something else for them when you get 10 miles east of river coming up into the plains ya cant tell there is even a river behind ya. wa state one of my favorites thanks again Russ for your sharing places I've never been & I've been lots of places you doing us all a big favor!
I really enjoyed this one and you covered it very well ... Scenic it sure is and worth every stop at view points to look around and film the sights .. Drone use is one of your best features .. Keep that drone in the air , that's pretty cool .. very well done ..
That spruce tree behind the log cabin was a directional tree at some time when it was small, they would bend over the top as a marker or direction, then the tree continues to grow to its present state.
Mother Nature replant the tree when there is a forest fire. Just takes a few years before you see the trees. For example at old faithful here was a forest fire in 1988 and in 1995 or 1996 you could still see were the fire was in 1988. It’s takes years for a forest to grow, just think it takes over 20 years for anout5 to8 foot tree to regrow.
I have been watching almost this whole season. I really enjoy our trips. When you show the story boards I have found out that if I pause I can read what they say. Very interesting. Thanks for the trips.
🙋♀️Sounds like a comfortable day ahead, 70's. I liked seeing the statue building the wall, the pair of boots on top of the rock, Sherman Lake, & the ride through Sherman Pass had some history to it! 👍 There were 3, 1above the 2, in the tree.
Some of my family was CCC back in the depression. I remember stories. All gone now. 25 years ago I was in the great north woods of Wisconsin. I had a Jeep and drove for hours out to the middle of nowhere. I got out and realized these huge trees were all planted straight as an arrow for as far as the eye could see. Found out later it was the CCC that replanted the clear cut that was the top 1/3 of the state. Unbelievable it was.
Hello. Just found your channel, and wanted to say thank you. My husband and I used to live in republic washington for a couple years while he worked on and ore drilling rig. We loved it there and always wanted to go back but haven't had a chance. Love seeing the area again.💚💜💙stay safe.
Sure hope no one renames that CCC area. Maybe they should get a werewolf statue put by those boots! Trader Vics recipe for a virgin Pina Colada? The smoke signal from that wood chuck plant is terrific!
This country ( Okanogan County ) is big, You could spend all summer up here and not see it all. Some really pretty places, especially going over the top from Okanogan to Newhaven on the west side.
Hi Russ, I finally have caught up with you since Sturgis. We've had thick smoke everywhere for a couple weeks now. It has changed color and smell everyday. Unbelievable!
Good video today. Sherman Pass is the highest pass in Washington State. The mountains you drove through are the Kettle River mountains, which are part of the Monashees, which begin in WA State and continue well up into BC. Up there, they become larger, more rugged, and also they become snow and glacier-capped. The Monashees are an extension of the Rockies. When you reach Tonasket and US Hwy 97, you'll be out of the Rockies.
The mountains east of the Columbia River are the Selkirk Mountains, which also run into Canada and extend east through Stevens and Pend O'Rielle Counties in Washington State, and into Northern Idaho. So, technically, Washington State is a Rocky Mountain state too.
well if you drove into Anacortes you passed within 2 blocks of me. if not was 4 miles. Not much view of anything Saturday. is really nice if you can see. Mt. Baker a couple of years ago got world record amt of snow. not much there now. will get a lot in winter
Thanks for reading the story boards & the sign, that you said was hard to read, maybe because of the sunshine. I have low vision & by the time I can focus, its too late, most of the time.
Thanks for sharing the scenic highways Russ. Perhaps you can check-out the ferry system that starts in Vancouver, B.C. someday if you have a passport handy. Also the Million Dollar Highway from Silverton to Ouray, CO. in the San Juan Mountains next time you're in that neck of the woods ;-)
There is darned near total chaos South of you... with the fires...the thousands of evacuees etc.... pls consider loops & circles, up North where you are... be/ drive safe ...
Russ is keeping heading into Washington and hesding for the coast really such a good idea? Would it not be better to head home? There are so few other lesiure travellers about as can be seen from your videos, for good reason given the fires.
Hello Russ this is Jerry from Oregon state, I asked this question before which was what editing video software do you use I miss placed the last response keep up the good work and be safe
Heh Russ, Tonasket Washington was socked in.. Smoke from fires on 13th of Sept 2020 I live near here. Why does your video show no smoke anywhere when you stopped at juntion of 20 and hwy 97?
The lake created at the camp was Sherman Lake, on Sherman Creek. It was to be a small recreational lake about a half mile long set in wilderness along the mountain road that eventually became Sherman Pass Scenic Byway. A 150' long, 25' high, 16' wide dam was built on the creek by the CCC in 1937, creating the lake and camping facilities were to be built at the site. Unfortunately, World War II intervened and the focus of the government shifted from the CCC to harvesting timber for the war effort. As a result the camp was closed in 1939. One unforeseen problem with the lake was that, by the 1950s it began to silt up as a result of the slowing of water flow in the creek below the dam. So, in 2006 it was decided to remove the dam. The creek was returned to, as much as was possible, its original state. The only remnants from the camp and the dam are the changing house, built in 1937, and the concrete frameworks from the spillway, now resting beside the creek as benches. The changing house has been restored and moved to its present location from the west end of the lake. The site is now maintained as the Growden Heritage Site Rest Stop, about 10 miles west of Kettle Falls, with informational plaques along a short trail, highlighting the various aspects of what the viewer experiences along the trail. Among one group of signs is a bronze sculpture which represents one of the hundreds of CCC enrolees who toiled at the camp, while nearby is another sculpture of a pair of high topped work boots. We will postulate that these boots were placed on this boulder to keep them high and dry while their owner, one of the dozens of CCC workers at the camp in 1939, went for a dip in the lake which he had help create. As well as washrooms at the east end of the parking area, there are a few picnic tables here and there, but no conveniences or services, such as vending machines, food kiosk or even a telephone. It's a great place for a quiet picnic and a break from the road, though.
The CCC is still active today there's a park in my city of San Bernardino call seacomm Lake the park went to hell they stepped in and took over and cleaned it up I meant operated and keep it clean today May 19th still 2022 I know the park is still being maintained by the CCC they're not gone

I agree, but I do wonder if you could find very many willing to work for it though.
We are spoiled! We don’t know what hard times are.
Russ, you're spoiling us. Every episode just gets better.
Totally agree!
It’s gonna get even better over the North Cascades!
Smoke on the western side of Cascades is horrible. Hell see when he gets here. 😬
In Holland, you GOTTA go see the wooden shoe store. That entire area is absolutely beautiful. And nearby is the Jeep rental, so you can ride in Jeep’s on the sand dunes

Sherman Pass has one of the few Tamarac forests of the USA. the Tamarac tree is most often found in clumps or lone trees but along the road is an entire forest of Tamarac.

Great videos of a great summer road trip Russ. The dead trees are due to the Bark Beetles. They are destroying the forrests. Safe travels.
Hi Russ, I'm still stuck here in England and dreaming of getting back to beautiful America.....
Thanks Russ! Sure enjoyed the CCC Camp and the walk in the woods. And the wolves and really nice aerial views!
I grew up in Republic Wa, my dad is still there. He ran the snow plow on that pass for 30yrs

Stay safe...my daughter says the air quality is very poor in Seattle.
That is beautiful country and we sure enjoy your drone video also.
THANKS
We need the CCC's back today! They were a group of hard working men thanks to P. Roosevelt.
Loved that memorial camp
Nice to see a statue still standing.

I recall the White Mountain fire of 1988. It was hot and smoky that summer
Hah, Russ was feeling a little energetic today, nice little walk. Thanks Russ. Great video as always.

Thanks Russ, much appreciated!
The wolf sculptures were sooo cool!
Thanks for the ride. I enjoyed it. :)
Excellent and many thanks. At least it’s very clear there, here in the Bay Area you can’t see the mountains.... 🍸🍸
Enjoyed today’s drive, animal cutouts were great. Take care on the road.
We love that area the drive we have friends that live in those areas we used to head to Republic for many years.
Thank you
My husband and I got to live in republic for 2 years while he worked for an ore drilling outfit. We LOVED it there. Wish we could go back.💙💜💚
I can almost read the story boards in full screen mode. If you could just get a little closer!
Really enjoyed the CCC memorial and overlook walks.
Beautiful scenery! Thanks for sharing! Safe travels!
Sure hope no one renames that CCC area. Maybe they should get a werewolf statue put by those boots! Trader Vics recipe for a virgin Pina Colada? The smoke signal from that wood chuck plant is terrific!

Learned all about CCC on Wikipedia!
Wondering what camera Bob uses in the van. Beautiful scenes.
Sherman Pass video for what camera Bob uses.

When you took a drive across highway 2, did you watch the floodlights on the face of Grand Coulee Dam, after dark?
Have you ever encountered rude opposition to flying your drone. I fly a mini 3 pro, so far so good.🍀🍀🍀
Ótimo vídeo!
don't have drone that helps immensely great photos...
So hows the suspension holding up with everone riding with ?
Keep it rolling fun time !

What was name of park at top of mountain? Can you camp there?
This is a part of Washington State no one really knows about. I like to call it Washington State's best kept secret.
