  • This is one of the few records published by Gurdjieff in which he offers guidance to his 'community of seekers', the pupils from many countries who joined him in Paris and New York.
At the end of Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson, Gurdjieff wrote that the Third Series of his trilogy, All and Everything, would be made accessible only to selected readers who had assimilated the contents of the first two series. As in all his teaching, Gurdjieff's aim in this Third Series was "to assist the arising in the mentation and feeling of the reader of a true representation of the real world instead of the illusory world he now perceives." The book poses again, in the uncompromising manner that experienced readers will recognise as unique to Gurdjieff's writing, the question of the purpose of life and of man's own being.
The first section is mainly autobiographical, relating material crucial to an understanding of the nature and intensity of personal effort required for an all-inclusive work on oneself. This is followed by a series of talks which Gurdjieff gave to his pupils in New York in 1930, and then by a long, but incomplete, essay on 'The Outer and Inner World of Man'.
