Got my 2016 Sport two weeks ago, my first MX5. Great fun on the twisty two lane backroads in New Hampshire. I find that I can enjoy driving at speeds that won't get me arrested, something I couldn't say when I was riding my Ducatis. Plenty of power, great handling.
I bought an ND (GT, manual) last year. Traded in my NC. Prior to that, I had an NA. All fun, all reliable, but the ND is definitely more responsive. It's a great driving car. The only thing I don't like is the infotainment system. The voice interface seldom seems to work right, and the navigation system doesn't warn you of traffic like my old Garmin used to. Still, for about $32k(US), it's probably the most fun per dollar you can get in a car.
I drive a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata. It's a factory hot rod; turbo, Torsen diff, torsion bars, Bilstein coilover shocks, and a six speed manual. I got rid of the stock 17" wheels. (Rubberband tires are for the track.) I may buy a new ND, but I will own this car the rest of my life. Because I adore it. The most fun is tailgating Porsches.
I get that the ND is technically better than the NA in every single way... But I still would take an NA MX-5 any day, solely because of the looks. The ND just looks so damn angry, while the NA's look is happy, feminine and fun.
I've driven the new model mx5, i still prefer my NA though. i love having no power steering and ABS. simple bread and butter driving for me is what makes my mx5 an amazing touring car for me.
Im sure that a hard top version will appear as will a turbo or S charger etc. Regardless, the club with a supercharger at 300 HP would definitely run the roads!
We didn't get as far as the test drive. The seats were uncomfortable - seat bolsters too tight and seat back too upright (at 5'9" and 5'10" this shouldn't be an issue). Cheers for all you smaller folks - it looks like a fun to drive car.
Yeah and this isn't a 1997 Miata. They shortened the car. My sister had an older gen Miata and I loved driving her car. This one is plain uncomfortable.
+Mark Coppola I find the seats comfortable. I'm 5'9", 180 pounds and, get this, 69 years old. Other than old man creakiness getting in/out it's a great car. I got too old for my Ducatis, the Sport model I bought in October is great on New Hampshire back roads, here there isn't very much sight line through turns, speeds are lower, California conditions are much different from what I've seen. Just say'n, works for me here.
No consideration for the passenger. Lacks a glove box and a cup holder. Might as well have just left the passenger seat out. Would have saved more weight.
actually with the top up you probaby have the one of the worst views over your shoulder you can have, because there is the top blocking your view. its small but that doesnt help when you cant see where you want to back it up out of a drive way for example. of course you dont need a camera but it indeed would be a nice addon.
It's an MX 5 not this crazy Miata name for America. I really enjoyed my test drive and would have to say a lot better and more fun drive than my 2009 BMW Z4. Will I buy a MX5 not sure it's a toss up between a motor bike and the MX5. My new BMW 220i convertible is such a nice car for a cruise with the electric seats on a winters day drive with the top down you wouldn't even know it's cold out. Come on Mazda include electric seats or at least an option.
+BradlyThe Radly I would agree with you but since I have experienced these SUPER light cars 155 HP which is MUCH higher than oversees models is actually pretty exciting! Now, I would add a supercharger because I like a great sleeper:)

3ducs but a Ducati and a MX5 in same garage looks better :-P

Excellent review, Ryan! Nailed all the impressions I hear from enthusiasts and owners all the time.
Great review guys, really enjoyed it. Can't wait to drive one!
Mazda seriously got it going on love the new Miata

if you are angry, it will look angry.
Same engine as the 3? I wonder how difficult it would be to pick from a MazdaSpeed3 donor? That would be a monster.
Great review.
It's been 8 years now... did you get to buy 1? :)
Great video!

+NZpommyBiker Agree. Cars this light do not need power steering.
+NZpommyBiker If you knew you preferred not having power steering and ABS when you went to drive a 2016 car you wasted your own time.
Very nice. 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Please learn the difference between wheelbase and track...
Bam Bam...Great review. Zoom Zoom.

+Mark Coppola I'm 6' 2" and daily drive a '97 first gen Miata with no problem. I think you're full of it.

Good for you! I don't like driving with my body at a right angle.
this car price twice expansive in my country
60,000 USD in China

Can someone tell me how much this costs
24K-32K depending on trim
please send me videos of everything you have on Miatas
Too bad it STILL doesn't have a backup camera when every other $20k car on the road has it. They'll be mandated in the U.S. in 2018.
You don't need a backup camera in a car like this. In fact, I don't think you need one at all unless you drive a big SUV or van.

Make that 2019...😁
snick snick snick-snick snick
but why no turbo? lame. It's like a brz but brz isn't ugly.
And now read trolling for dummies

+Kimo Kalihi Well, I leave it to all the others to judge us. Bye.
True, no turbo-lag. That’s a good thing, pal.

+Dean Cade GT trim has heated seats included.
+Dean Cade In the States it's called a Miata...upset? Call Mazda and complain.
+Jay Lewis Not a complainant just the name is weird. Mazda America would have named the car why who knows.
Dean Cade The name comes from high german meaning gift or reward.Which I think is perfect!
Things way too slow to even be considered a sports car in 2016... Like really...155 hp. Mazda could've done better
+BradlyThe Radly you clearly have never driven a miata (-:
I own a 2004....
+BradlyThe Radly I would agree with you but since I have experienced these SUPER light cars 155 HP which is MUCH higher than oversees models is actually pretty exciting! Now, I would add a supercharger because I like a great sleeper:)
+Bradly TheRadly what model? no googling allowed
After listening to this guy talk, I knew he would just looove the m5. I suspect he is a part time hair dresser...
Yes because real men only drive muscle cars right
