    For my money, Pulp were the best "Britpop" band. (They were lumped in with that scene even though they'd been plugging away for 10+ years before Oasis and Blur and the like came along.) Their three-album run of "His'n'Hers", "Different Class", and "This Is Hardcore" is easily one of the all time great back-to-back-to-back releases, up there with Bowie's Berlin trilogy.

      Actually they were so good, you never should call them britpop.

    It's unusual for someone recommending Pulp to go for something from Seperations as it wasn't until their next album "His n Hers" that they broke through. It's a very under-rated album though ( "My Legendary Girlfriend" is my personal favourite song from the album). I'd recommend "Babies", "Do you remember the first time?", "Lipgloss", "Disco 2000", "The Trees", "This is Hardcore". I'd also give a huge recommendation to listen to "Fat Children" from Jarvis Cocker's solo work. Your Scott Walker comment is very astute, Scott Walker actually produced their album "We Love Life" (the track "The Trees" comes from that album and you can definitely get the Walker vibe from it).
    The Trees.

    Pulp were a real fun band that were often interesting musically. They often felt tongue in cheek but had some great tunes, Common People, Sorted For E's And Whizz, Disco 2000. Loved this and loved them in the mid to late 90's. Fun fact Sheffield UK produced Joe Cocker and Jarvis Cocker but they are not related.

    You really have to check out the song This Is Harcore. Amazing stuff, totally prog in its scope, even though it sounds nothing like Yes or Genesis.

    Cool. Really love Pulp and love this song. You got to hand it to the singer Jarvis Cocker when he crashed the 1996 Brit Awards stage when Micheal Jackson was performing his Earth Song and sort of done a clothed Moony on live TV before being chased off stage.

    I like this band and its singer (and leader) Jarvis Cocker. My favorite by them is a track from 1996 called Common People, and that entire album Different Class is pretty damned good. This song doesn't exactly work for me. Jarvis can't quite carry it off. The band sounds great doing this slow-burn soul ballad. Jarvis doesn't really have the moxie to deliver to melody very well. He sounds like a guy impersonating Bowie. On the other hand, he probably wrote this, so he deserves credit for that.

    I've always really liked Pulp, and this is a great song. Melancholia and a twangy guitar, what's not to love?! :-)
    If you've really never heard of Pulp before, you owe it to yourself to check out their song "Common People" it's an absolute classic. Then to complete your homework, follow it up with the cover version of it by William Shatner. Quite possibly one of the most unlikely/awesome covers you will ever hear! \m/

    Common People is a masterpiece. The lyrics are amazing and tell a truth not often aired. My job put me in the circle of very wealthy people and I got to know a lot of posh girls and Common People nailed it. Strangely, William Shatner did a cover of it and even more strangely I liked it :D.

    If you are a Harry Potter movie fan, you have heard this singer as singer Jarvis Cocker and bassist Steve Mackey were the singer and bassist for the band The Weird Sisters and performed three songs al written by Cocker. Also in the band were Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar) and Phil Selway (drums) from Radiohead, plus two other guys from bands I don't know, Add N to (X) (Steven Claydon - Keys & bagpipes) and All Seeing I (Jason Buckle - rhythm guitar.) EDIT: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie. (Or, as it is by far my least favorite film of the series, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Disappointment)

    If you enjoyed this style of music, I’d suggest another English band from around the same time, “The Tindersticks “, try the song “My Sister”, got a feeling you’ll love it and them.

    Interesting keys. I had to jump over to Wiki to check out the instrument list because I thought that I heard a Novachord. What I heard must’ve been the Farfisa organ. And, the strings were listed as “sampled strings”. I thought that they might have been an ARP/Solina string synth. So, I was 0 for 2 playing Spot the Synth.
    Not a bad tune. Very lush. I’ll go with your second interpretation of the lyrics: “you’re dead to me”.
    In your search for folk music, consider British electric folk music from the 70’s. Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, Fotheringay. Some songs worth considering are Banks of the Nile, Dimming of the Day, Who Knows Where the Time Goes, Now Be Thankful, Fotheringay. And since Al Stewart came out of the British acoustic folk scene of the 60’s, I’ll mention Roads to Moscow again. The studio version is (tastefully) done with a full band. But, in later years he and an accompanist would perform it with just a 6-string and a 12-string guitar. All versions are good. Enjoy.

      Woody n’ Sidecar Dog The steely final note “goes on forever”.
      I’m listening to Rhymes in Rooms right now. Peter White on guitar, keyboard and accordion is amazing. Looking at the CD photos, it appears that Al Stewart played a 6-string Ovation on this tour. I could be wrong about him playing a 12-string.

      I’m a bit of a Russian history nerd (took a Russian language course in college). Al Stewart must have had a good knowledge of Russian history to write this song. The style and tone of the studio version, with the choir backing, is spot on.

    • @rtwbikerider

      Woody n’ Sidecar Dog Someone said that he read 25 books on the USSR in WW II before writing this song. It might be based on Solzhenitsyn or a character in one of his books. I’m not sure. Regardless, it’s a well written song.

    Italian night sounds fun. Ever since i saw davie504 hand make a pizza as a joke ive honestly wanted to try it. Itll be a while before i do though haha.
    Get a cheesecake variety pack, i love getting those. Usually 6-8 single slices that are different flavors. Cant go wrong imo.
    This song is good but its almost too melancholy to me. Its good, i like the progression of the music but im not always in the mood for that moan-y feeling it gives.

    If you like this, you’ll love ‘Mexican Radio” by Wall of Voodoo.
    This song feels almost like a parody of a Holiday Inn lounge singer. At first I thought it was one of the Country Punk hybrids I used to see in Austin back in the day (hook em horns). Then I realized they were British.

    The British are so good at creating “scenes”: glam rock, punk, new wave, mods/rockers, Brit pop, goth....
    The costumes, the hair (Flock of Seagulls) the shoes (Doc Martins), the accessories (safety pins)....porkpie hats! I know we have stuff here (surf rock, California sound, Grunge, Rockabilly, etc). But it’s not as well choreographed and detailed.
    I’ll bet Pulp had their own style and scene. I’m picturing shiny suits and sequined dresses.

    • @JustJP
      @JustJP  4 года назад +1

      I'd try on the sequined suit🕺🏾

    • @peetee303
      @peetee303 4 года назад +1

      Yes they had there style sort of a bit New Romantic and a bit retro he didn't wear a sequinned dress tho, Flock of Seagulls god I remember them terrible hair music wasn't to good either, I own a pair of Doc Martins had them for years Ox Blood colour, use to have the pins but no more and I own a couple of Pork pies a lovely hat. Bit of a Rockabilly scene still here in the UK I love the Drape jacket I purchased 2 years ago and still wear them to weddings etc one is black with leopard skin trim the other grey with black trim very dapper.

    • @sidecardog5244
      @sidecardog5244 4 года назад

      PT: My point was the men wore shiny suits and the women had the sequined dresses:) . As a past owner of several triumph motorcycles, I saw the Rockabilly stuff everywhere. It is a “scene” that travels well and never seems to completely go out of style.
      I suppose the Stray Cats are still playing somewhere!
