EXoDOS, with QEMU and MS WOS install as Launchbox has no Li(g)nux version, the patch for Linux is still not available, and it does not work well yet with wine. BUT, you can use part of their games just with DOSBOX or use other launcher, without the goodies of the database.

For a Big Box game to try to install I'll go with one that is highly requested by people on GOG, No One Lives Forever. When GOG got Alpha Protocol RE-listed on there store a lot of people were begging for them to go after NOLF next.
Love your vid, have you tried Warcraft 3 from the boxed copy? I have my original boxed copy of WC3 and havent been able to install it. Would love to see a video of that :)
I've installed and played a few games from CDs/DVDs with lutris in the last year/months since I own a Steam Deck. In fact, that's my preferred way. I've installed and still play the original GTA Trilogy for example with this. Some games I played were on disks from a german pc magazine "Computer Bild Spiele". This includes Sudeki, Midnight Nowhere, Knight Rider 1 and 2 and Emergancy 1 to 4 with expansions. Other games like Radio Control Racers Deluxe, Sims 1 Complete Edition, Silent Hill 2 to 4, Chaser, Unreal and System Shock 2 work aswell the same way. Sometimes it's so frustrating and time consuming to debug what a game is missing or why it crashes (i.e. the game Gene Troopers). Most of the time you'll have to install dependencies like the indeo video codec, lavfilters, dsound or other directx components through winetricks. And copy protection needs some...workarounds from the internet. But when it works - oh boy what a feeling! 😊
Did it give you the "Insert cartridge 3" achievement? Because that's basically what you did. It's has far less steps involved than what is being described in the video.
I would love to see how i can run my old amiga 500 games on the steam deck. I would love to play bubble booble with a friend on one or even two different steam decks so I might finally reach the endgame lvl 100.
Battlefield 1942. There is a Steam Community post that takes you through the steps of getting it to run on Windows 10 and how to connect to community driven servers. It even points you to a website where to download the game. The Anthology version is fully patched and runs on modrrn Windows, out of the gate. Haven't tried it on Steamdeck, though.
Bottles is a curious piece of software. I've found that it adds the game's recently installed executable shortcuts to the list of launch executables ONLY AFTER leaving the particular bottle page and clicking back into it. I too tried manually adding the "desktop shortcuts" or their direct executables and LOL'd when I learned it did this itself the next time I opened Bottles!
This can be game-specific too. Some games open up a splash window by default and requires setting the game EXE regardless. Example: Star Trek Armada defaults to a splash window.
@@gardiner_bryant was quite a STRONG bad, if'n you know what I mean. Now the big question is: what is the ONE game you've played on the Deck that gave you the jibblies?
I remember this rabbit hole from a couple of years ago. I have 2 "retro" machines running windows XP just for this and thought maybe Linux was the answer to playing retro games on a modern machine, After spending a hour or so banging my head against the wall I just went back to Windows XP. I had thought it would be fun to have a dedicated linux gaming machine just for retro games but it didn't work out. I might give it another try something when I feel like messing with retro stuff again because its been 3 or 4 years since I last tried and my linux knowledge has grown and a lot of work has been done to making things compatible.
Heroic launcher now has a feature that allows to add custom games by simply running the installer. It also crashed way less than lutris for gog and epic games in my experience. Also btw StarCraft Remastered is pretty good
You can’t get BNet version to work on steam deck? Remaster does run better and full screen. Just wondering. Yeah love and grew up playing starcraft 1 back in the day. Miss sim city. Hated so much ea has shut them down. Sim city 3000 was prob better game.

For Need for Speed Most Wanted 2005 since I couldn't figure out how to install from multiple discs I installed it on my Windows computer and just copied them to my steam deck which worked perfectly fine for me. SC broodwar is free on Blizzard or if you have it installed on your pc copy/paste the game folder to you Steam Deck SD Card, (i created a games folder) add exe to non steam games, Set proton comp to Experimental, add suffix on Shortcut tab Launch Options "-launch" the game will not require Blizz app after that. Set desired hotkeys and play :D This also works for Diablo II: Lord of Destruction (2000-01). Great Vid BLACK AND WHITE 2 NEEDS TO COME TO GOG OR STEAM soo much nostalgia with that game.
I’ve experimented with this too, and had mixed results. No-name DVD drives are a horror story, and if you’re looking for a cheap option, I’d recommend the slim external drives sold by Dell as a low-cost alternative. I would say, for Steam, it’s best to save yourself the trouble of Lutris in most cases and work entirely in Proton. Many more things will just work, and you’ll spend less time fighting with programs that refuse to load. (Plus, you’ll be fully playable in handheld mode from the get-go with controller configs.) Just run the .EXE from the disc as a Non-Steam Game, then point the executable to the game’s .EXE. Reliability can be mixed, there, but it comes with some great, reliable features There are also quite a few titles which, while you can get them working on the Deck, are best played with their PlayStation 2 console ports instead. No One Lives Forever is a prime example of this, as the PC port is a pain in the butt to get configured while the PS2 version runs perfectly with EmuDeck & PCSX2.
You can often try adding dgvoodoo2 dll files for these games to work. I made sims1 work on Linux with that one for example (yes, the full one with all expansions).
Oh man, I’ve been replaying SC3000 lately and it’s such a vibe I know it makes no sense but I still like it more than SimCity 4, it just feels like SC2000 with updated graphics - it’s that Goldie locks territory between too little simulation and too much simulation that hits the spot for chill city building for me
Did you try any of the games you had problems with through proton in steam? I got SimCity 2000 working off my original install cd's (copied over) by adding the installer to steam, then setting it to use proton, and installing it. After install I changed the steam entry to point to the simcity 2000 exe and it mostly worked. The sound wasn't working and I found that I had to install some other thing for midi sound, but after that it worked perfect! Proton is kind of amazing!
I was thinking about playing some old stuff I used to play as a kid on the Deck. Late 90s, early 2000s games, mostly RTS, with a couple shooters and of course, Worms Armageddon. Still haven't got to it, but maybe I try after watching your video. By the way, Valve has recently updated Proton with better support for some really old titles. As for your external drive, I have the same drive from Amazon in a different case, got it for burning Lightscribe CDs. Lack of native USB-C is expected as this is a noname product. But if you can live with the limitations, it does the job. The case also has slots for SD cards which is a great bonus for me who often flashes microSDs for the likes of Raspberry Pi.
Love Black and White! That game was something new. My favourite games from that era were Oni, MDK2, Giants: Citizen Kabuto and Messiah (Shiny Entertainment will always have a special place in my heart ), Heavy Metal fakk 2
For Rise of Legends... I'd try getting DX8 dlls installed in the bottle, maybe directsound, directmusic, or WMP would be needed with some of those old games. some of the msxml packages help with some old games of that time too. I'd try but I don't have the game. Sometimes I swap the wined3d driver so its using OpenGL instead of Vulkan when seeing graphics errors... sometimes works.
You can use Ghidra or IDA to reverse engineer the game executable. Search for the string in the graphics stuff error message and then check the addresses from where the string is called. You'll usually find some conditional jumps there and if you're lazy and don't want to do the hard work of finding out all of the things they do just try inverting the condition (JZ=>JNZ; JE=>JNE; etc.) and see if it brings you further. It helps if you have some basic understanding of x86 disassembly
Dungeon Siege 2 is a candidate for me on this issue. Which is why I own two version of the game my original physical copy + expansion and the digital versions on GOG & Steam. But due to some BS they left out the Expansion on the digital versions so I had no choice but too get a third version without DRM to circumvent problems. I have it backed up so when I finish installing everything to my now off of Windows because win 10 decided that secure boot is not active when it was blue screen crashing randomly on a clean fresh install. This is why I keep three to four Linux distros on USBs on all times. Fresh copy of Linux Mint, Now only thing needed is to replace the fans on my 1070 mini or get another GPU & repair it later, I just repasted it yesterday. Temps went down at least 20*C on idle. I always enjoy watching your videos, I just realized RUclips unsubbed me so resub instantly when I saw the two of the three games you were installing.
It would be great to know if there is a legit work around to getting the Steam releases of Rise of Nations and SimCity 3000 working in Proton, since the ProtonDB page doesn't provide the right information needed to get them working on Steam Deck. I currently have the GOG version of SimCity 3000 instead of the Steam version, but I can still get it to run in Proton using Lutris and Heroic Game Launcher.

Kind of bummed out that I can't get C&C Generals to run on Steam even though it shows it should run on Linux. Bought that bundle but then again, it's EA that released them so should've known they wouldn't patch or fix anything for modern resolutions.
I always felt original black and white was superior to the sequel, played the hell out of it and the creature isle expansion pack. My 500mhz pentium used to struggle
I have a question, I have a non steam game that works but it kind of runs improperly. Like the framerate is all over the place and issues with resolution. Should I just run that game off lutris or bottles instead and test it that way?
Is it wrong from me to want to stay away as much as possible from wine and lutris? I want things to work in proton, or not at all. All these magical things just mess up my system and I completely loose sight of how my system actually works. They are a mess, and I don't want it.

@@Winnetou17 It seems the 2d command and comquer games is what it was first developed for judging by the original git repository but it's something useful for many old directdraw games on both modern windows and wine
In my experience with Lutris, installing games from local install files (or network share like you did) is the main way of installing games, and using their online installer scripts is for special cases
Ok to get rise of legends to work you need to use port proton this gives you choices others don’t usualy give :) and will allow you to play the game and tweek the in game menu to fine tune it :)
i had a very similar issue with a USB 3½" floppy drive. It worked but only just, it wasn't as reliable as a proper 3½" floppy drive in my old Pentium back in the day. I had to constantly unplug the drive and plug it back in to read a dksk. Sure some disks didn't read since they are like 20 years old but still I had more reliability with an actual floppy drive in an old 90's era PC. This must be why retro gamers still keep 90s (and older) era PCs around.
I've successfully installed Need For Speed Underground II on my Steam Deck in bottles, after a bit of fiddling and I had to use No-CD Crack and some patches for widescreen.
That was fun ;) I'm a wing commander man. You should try getting all the game sin the series working. After solving problems with video playback, the main issue is joystick control isnt great

This is cool! Although for StarCraft at least you can get it running just fine on battle net, but it was too small so I uninstalled it pretty quickly
How can you maintain 300+ APM in Brood War on the Steam Deck???
OMG I've been wanting to play rise of legends for so long. Haven't gotten it working on linux either 😢
Terran #2, KMart Music?! HOW DARE YOU SIR!
Oh God, no. I own that same drive and I'm about to do a project. I'm doomed.
Very simple, install windows 10 or 8.1, on steam deck then run old games
In my experience with Lutris, installing games from local install files (or network share like you did) is the main way of installing games, and using their online installer scripts is for special cases
I put Diablo 1 on my Steamdeck but with the Devilution X engine that was easy mode.
My copy of spore is a dvd, and i still play it regularly on my Linux pc. Bottles ftw 💪
Ok to get rise of legends to work you need to use port proton this gives you choices others don’t usualy give :) and will allow you to play the game and tweek the in game menu to fine tune it :)
To be far, playing old games is hard on windows a lot of times also. The older, the more difficult.
Ive learned something about cd installs. thank you
Take it apart you can change the usb cable and its just a laptop drive missing the top cover.
Now the real task is to get black on my one with the expansion, pack creature island to work on the steam deck
Moral of the Story... EA still sucks, as always!
Lutris install scripts have never once worked for me.
Idk why you needed a disc drive to do any of this, but i love the weirdness
Strongbad and Homestar! Can you do the KoT?
C'mon.. at least a 1/5 for the Ninja Turtle shell case.
Yeah the installation is the worst part sometimes I just install the game inside the vm and copy the files to host
I wish the steam deck would let me play splinter cell conviction on linux
If you get the right drive you can rip PS3 games without the console and backup Blu-ray disks with makemkv and handbrake.
There's a list of drives on the rpcs3 site
I am on way too many things so I will pass with the mastodon thing. Just as I won't go Tiktok.
8:23 its not a crack its a no cd fix C: thats how game copy world calls it
I ain't making an account on some place that sounds dumb.
I still dont know why no indie dev has copied Black & White.
get a usb floppy drive next and try installing doom
so retro!
t.What is wine?
Wine is the open source compatibility tool that Valve used to make Proton. It allows Windows apps to run natively on Linux.
Black and white 2 is abandonware and can be downloaded for free on the abandonware site
i had a very similar issue with a USB 3½" floppy drive. This must be why retro gamers still keep 90s (and older) era PCs around.
nice Strongbad impression at 6:13 and homestar at 6:28
I've successfully installed Need For Speed Underground II on my Steam Deck in bottles, after a bit of fiddling and I had to use No-CD Crack and some patches for widescreen.
That was fun ;) I'm a wing commander man. You should try getting all the game sin the series working. After solving problems with video playback, the main issue is joystick control isnt great
Loving all the H*R voice references!
2:05 aren't these scripts editable?
I think I want 7:32 on my headstone...
