just bought a coleus today. i saw it walking around the store and it’s by far one of my favorite plants i own right now! was doing research on how to care for them bc i really want this plant to last for years and i’m so glad i came across your videos!
That is SO Awesome minh!! And I'm glad you found me!! I'm on Instagram too so follow up. It's easy and even more useful to keep in touch with me. But here I have many videos that will make you a very successful Coleus grower...and its very easy to follow along. I make it a point to REPEAT IMPORTANT THINGS SEVERAL TIMES during the course of a video to make it educational thru the repetitive process of learning. Don't get disappointed if you lose a plant here or there....I have and its part of the learning!!! Please pass my channel on!!!!!
If I don't winter over, I buy ONE robust coleus plant (per variety) early in the season. Immediately after coming home, I break off 2 or 3 starts and tuck them in another pot and water well. I keep 'pinching' if I want more and repeat the above process. By early June, I have all the coleus I want . . . by July they are full and flourishing. It's early October now and I've got several LARGE planters of coleus on my porches and patio. I plan on wintering over this year (taking my cuttings on or just before frost) and buy a 'new' variety next year. I've already made up several small pots to put cuttings in and will probably put a few in water too! NOTE: you can also use this method with IMPATIANS as well.
Years ago (in the 70's) when I was in HS, I began my foray into the plant world. I lived in Brooklyn and we had a small plant store near us. One day I found a coleus (didn't know what it was at the time). I wanted to make a terrarium and the lady at the store said the coleus would be a great plant for that. I bought it, (I believe it was the Lord Baltimore) brought it home and put it in a small apothecary jar. The plant itself was in a 2" pot so not very tall. Well within a month it was too big for the jar so I planted it into a pot. It continued to take off and I was told to pinch off the buds to make them spread more. It did and then I learned to take cuttings and root them in water to make more plants. I was able to keep them for a long time before they all eventually died. Keep in mind this was all in my bedroom! Until I moved to NJ in 1984 and saw Coleus growing in gardens, I never knew it was really an outdoor plant. I did plant them in the garden but hated to let them die in the winter (I don't have much room inside). So I stopped buying them until this summer. I got one at Home Depot. I am not sure what it's called and I didn't see that your have one of these. They are yellow with maroon on the leaves. The leaves are kinda narrow with feathery edges. But, since it didn't grow huge, I brought it inside already and took cutting from it just in case. BTW, I love the dollar store vases but I was cleaning out my old and unused spices. They were all in glass jars so now I use them for vases. They fit great on these narrow window sills in my house. I am glad I found your video and I am going to watch more of them to learn more about one of my favorite plants! Thanks.
Hi Janpre....Magnificent story....and example of how easily they can grow, the various propagation methods and how creatively u can keep a bunch in a relatively small space. Thanks for sharing and I appreciate your watching my videos....overall they will in the long run make growing Coleus even more easy and exciting.
I have been growing coleus for over 40 years, it's my fav!!! you can also use plastic jugs, some are really pretty, or glass jars...also goodwill and thrift stores have vases for sometimes 50 cents...I did this a few years and it does work well...great video
Perfect timing for bringing up the subject. I'm already dreading the winter because I don't want to see my babies go. Thanks again for your heart felt videos. Your a joy to watch. ☺
My sister & I watched your great video, then rewatched, and drank every time you say “whadayoudo”! Thanks for the info, the fun, and the hangover 😅 Love from Long Island!
What a magnificent coleus collection!!😍😍😍… just strolling through your channel and loooove it! Thanks for sharing Jim… sending you much love from Bali 🇮🇩❤️🙏👍
Hello Yamakaliki!!! 👋 Thank you for watching and taking the time to write such kindness. I hope you follow along. I also sell seeds to my collection on my Ebay listing "Jim's Coleus "
Hey Sean. Really appreciate that!!! I'm almost finished with and will be posting a new video on Labor Day Monday sometime!! Thank you for your loyalty & support!!
I guess I’m lucky to have a great place to keep all my plants, and I have a lot of plants to bring in. I grow and propagation succulents. The easiest plant to propagate!
Years ago when I started growing Coleus I Overwintered many more but for many of the reasons I touched on in recent videos...Ive turned towards Rootings and just seeds.
My wife and I love coleus but we are in a small apartment with a small balcony. We have coleus all summer. As the season ends we buy bottles of water at the dollar store, remove the labels, put in some glass marbles and our cuttings. The bottles take up very little space on the rolling shelf in front of the sliding door to the balcony. As soon as it is warm enough we cut the bottles away from the roots and plant them. The small mouths of the bottles also keep the water from evaporating too rapidly.
@richardwasserman Hey Richard ... I too keep Rootings in the Off season with the long neck colored bud vases. SO you place marbles and water in the vases??
I just left a comment/question on one of your older videos and I believe this one may have helped more on what to do with such a large coleus. Just hope it's not too late. We just went thru a few days straight of wind & rain in the 50's (central NJ).
I wish you lived closer to here you taught me everything I know about Coleus plants and I would love to have half of some you have sadly I can't find many Colues plants in my small town..
So 😞 sorry. You can order live Coleus plugs which they ship to your home..... www.rosydawngardens.com I purchase and expand my Coleus Varieties each year there.
Hello my dear friend. Your kolyos flowers look great. They all have their own beauty. I enjoy watching your videos. I appreciate your work and enthusiasm. Congratulations. I wish you continued success. I send greetings and respects from Türkiye / Kütahya. Ali Demir
Hey tyew .....Awesome!!! GOOD LUCK on duplicates!! Glad to have you watching. Pass my channel on!!!! Please!! As for Comments....I try very hard and Do Answer EVERY QUESTION to the best of my ability. I also have great subscribers like Pat C , Holy Moley , Mystique Rose and others who at times will answer questions as well. I've learned much from them !!! Quite simply....the larger the pot...the Larger your Coleus will potentially grow. You can either place a few different variations in a circular pattern on pots like my white pot in my driveway featured on this video.....its a 14" pot....has 1 Inky Fingers. 1 Jitters, 1 Kong Red, and 1 Defiance in it. Or you can make a single Giant Planter like the Saturns which are 12" pots. It's up to you!!! Hope this helps. If you need further information follow me over on Instagram where you can send me messages & pictures if needed. Good luck!!
Have made cuttings in fall, just before frost temps (Oct 7 in central IA), put into water, roots started within 5 days at the nodes. Transfer to moist indoor potting soil when roots are an inch long. Will provide some extra light with a plant light, giving it a longer day than the natural short day of November through February. In spring may root more cuttings to plant outside. This takes little time and is an inflation beater. Also, these plants can make nice hostess gifts.
Yes !! All of my Rootings eventually get planted outdoors in May. Remarkable how fast they root in water!! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!!!
Lol....I get many people who say this. I'm humbled. Here's a great Coleus supplier which sell live plugs starting each January. They are Excellent.... I use them to expand my Coleus collection aswell!! www.rosydawngardens.com
Last year I rooted cuttings in water and they produced beautiful blue flowers all winter. Couldn’t quite make it until spring….they rotted, but I will try again. That green one glows!
Hi Diane....thanks for sharing this. It's a great comment because it will help yourself and others keep the rooting going next time. If you see your cutting now a "Rooting" start to develop seed stalks (that long blue flowering spike) cut it off. Keep cutting them as they develop because Seed stalks Rob the rest of the Coleus (even a Cutting) of nutrition/ developmental energy is diverted to the stalk away from the roots, stem & leaves in favor of the stalk. Unless you like the flowers....then prepare to lose it eventually. It's up to your intentions. If you want to keep the rooting to replant in Spring.....cut the stalks as they appear....change water weekly.
This video was extremely helpful. I have been thinking about this coming winter. I'm going to start collecting small cheap vases so that I'll be ready for the fall. I love your variety of coleus. Hopefully, I will be able to overwinter a few. I have a very small house but comfortable house. I would like to save five or six different kinds. Thanks for all the tips.
You can!!! Dollar Store sell a CAJILLLION Bud Vases....cheap. Again try to get translucent ones....and a few larger bud vases as some Coleus develop very large Rootballs. REMEMBER WEEKLY WATER CHANGES!!! And expect to lose a few.... its typical.
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus YES, YES, Translucent. I didn't think of that. I'm really new at this, but I like your videos and your plants. It will be a fun activity which I can enjoy the results all summer long. Thanks!!!
It is so sad to know that folks just throw away their beautiful plants, or let them die off. Luckily, I haven't had to do that. I always gift them to friends or family or donate them to libraries, hospitals, churches, local or regional businesses. There is always some place someone would like to brighten up a space or window. Not only does it clear up your space, it also brings joy and a smile to someone else's. Maybe try something like that, and then you won't be so bummed about having no space for them. 🙂
Yes it is....But I make every effort to give away whatever I do have left that's " giveable" to friends , coworkers And a local church. The Huge Huge planters on my property are used by me for Seed Harvesting.....Afterwards the plants are composted. Unfortunately when growing so many Coleus some get thrown away..... but fear not....this is why they grow so easily, so fiercely and give such an abundance of seeds!!!
Hi Jim! I’m originally from Jersey (Nutley) but have been living in Florida for many years. I just purchased my first coleus plants a couple weeks ago. I got two different ones but really want the dark burgundy color ones. Yours are so pretty and I’m surprised by the different leaf shapes. I planted my four plants under my oak tree and can’t get over how fast they’ve grown. I’m going to take a cut from one and try planting in the sun. I’ve planted many different types of flowers outside but never had any luck with them growing. I guess the Florida sun is too strong. When you talk about seeds are the seeds the flower that grows out of the plant and what do you do with it? I’m really excited about my journey with the coleus plant now. You have a new sub! Thanks for sharing! 😊🙏🏼❤️🍁🍂🍁
Hello... FLORIDA!!! .Im jealous. My Sister in law lives in Beautiful Siesta Key but because of a stupid family fued my wife and Her stopped talking about 10 years now 😔....So there goes my Opportunity to Stay at that normally expensive resort area for nothing....and I personally miss my Sister in law. FAMILY !!! SIGH 😕 😞!! Anyway Yes the Seeds are in the long stalk that develops little purple flowers... they need to remain on for at least a month or until they brown on the bottom....but not always . I actually harvest seeds and dry them out....separating them by variety and sell them on my "Jim's Coleus" Ebay Listing which starts in about a week..... I do have videos showing how to harvest seeds too. But here is my Ebay link if you want some of my seeds to add to yours. www.ebay.com/itm/394440819723?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=ksvvexuaqq2&sssrc=2524149&ssuid=ksvvexuaqq2&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Hey Jim! Its been a great year for coleus. Mine have done great, im addicted i plan on tripping and quadrupling my Coleus starting next spring. I was wondering if i did want to bring a plant in over the winter any tips on how and what i should do? If you plan on answering this is another video just tell me to hang on lol
Hruclips.net/video/soDEAhN5w9Y/видео.html Here's a link to one of my videos on Overwintering a Coleus. Best advice I can give is LIGHT!! Coleus require not necessarily direct sunlight but especially indoors .....And as the Winter days grow shorter in light intensity and duration it triggers the Coleus to go dormant. I suggest a few smaller Clones of your intended Coleus for Overwintering (easier to manage) and keeping it near the brightest indoor location.....supplement it with a Full spectrum LED Grow light. They are inexpensive and safe. Can find them on Amazon or ebay. Water as soil gets dry on top....very little fertilizer as Overwintered Coleus will not "actively" Grow but slow over the winter....it will also lose some leaves and color and intensity of leaves may fade until Spring returns
Coming from Los Angeles, USDAZone10, this was still a very useful video. Our coleus are semi evergreen/perenials, so we get to enjoy them even in the winter. After a couple of years, though, I found mine were spent. Thanks for sharing how we can keep them going. This may be the beginning of a whole new coleus journey! You've got a great collection.
Hey Chad!! Yes Absolutely!! In the wild they grow tall....develop seeds ..they drop and regenerate . But definitely...cut them down or trim them which will bring out the fresh foliage !!
Hi Jim! I hope to snatch some Fish Nets, Lord Baltimore , Defiance etc from your eBay! Thanks for the info! Had a beautiful summer with coleus! Thanks to you! Blessings
Hi Debbie!! Yes I Do!! Frequent consistent (weekly) water changes ....Best I can...I may skip a week here & there. Scroll back a few I did a video on how I keep them alive all Winter into Spring!
EXCELLENT POINT!!! And Valid....You absolutely need to check for and prevent bringing insects indoors. What recommend is a week before your planning on bringing your Coleus in...trim any excessive growth...tidy it up a bit...remove older dead or damaged dying foliage....visibly check plant for those insect indicators like chomping holes ..check underneath the leaves where bugs 🐛 hang out.... As for the soil....clear away all debris...visibly check for ants or insects too. VERY IMPORTANT...Take a look underneath the pot and inspect the drainholes....if there's an ant colony or Infestation present...they will likely be coming & going thru the bottom drain holes. If All looks good.... Either do an internet search for homemade mild natural insecticide spray using dawn dish soap or purchase " SAFER INSECT SPRAY SOAP " at Home depot, Lowes, or Amazon. Gently spray the plant and soil a few days prior to bringing it indoors.
If they aren't propagating well I'll cut bottom rooting stem at 45 degree angle and put back in cinnamon water to start all over again. Keep it in warm house in a sunny window.
Interesting....Do you find the cinnamon really beneficial for the cuttings? I'm a big advocate of water changes.... not just for Coleus but cut flowers which I recommend DAILY.
Hey, I have an idea to share that you might like. Instead of using glasses or dollar vases that take up shelf space, my ma loves that Oui brand yogurt that comes in a little glass jar with a lip around the opening. I get her to save those jars for me, and I take some aluminum craft wire and wrap it under the lip of the jars and put a loop in the top of the wire so you can string 6 or 7 of them up like fish and hang it in a window. You'll need one of those squeeze bottles with a nozzle to replace the water or you'll make a giant mess.
Sounds like a very creative way to hold Cuttings!! Reminds me of the three swinging glass root jars I have that suspend on a metal bar or of like a hammock. !
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus Exactly. I have one of those little root jar hammock rigs and it's in constant use, but it takes up horizontal space. I got the idea to use the yogurt jars on a string from already having that and one lucky day last year when bass and crappie were practically jumping into my boat. I'm into echeveria like you're into coleus, so overwinter space is always something I have to consider.
I personally have had better luck using Pots.....planting directly in the ground may be more challenging and subject to insects. But I do know plenty of followers who have had great luck making up an arrangement right in the ground. Your luck like All will be very much determined by the location, quality and drainage abilities of your Soil.
Do you leave them in water all winter or do you eventually plant them in soil? How much light do they need? I don't really have any available windows but I do have plant lights.
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus Thanks so much! I wasn't sure if they would be okay sitting in water that long. I have some big beautiful plants and I want to propagate as many as possible for next year😊
@fradertoadie Most Coleus will last straight thru Fall & Winter into next Spring. But frequent water changes and a bright 🌞 location will increase their success!!
Hi! I was wondering if you ever tried manual pollination. I have two coleus but I keep them indoors because I live in an apartment, so bees are sadly not an option for me. Both plants are very different in shape and colour and they are flowering at the same time, so I'd really like to try and see what comes out of their seed.
Hi!! Thanks for the question. One thing about Coleus seed stalks...they can self pollinate so it's not an Absolute necessity for insects to pollinate. I have never manually pollinated or cross pollinated manually ...however I did place a Watermelon Kong variety next to my Jitters ...both heavily flowering , lots of insect pollination....and upon collecting the seeds have gotten a beautiful Jitters with a magnificent pink/ fuscia center. The flowers are sooo tiny on Coleus that it's a chore to manually pollinate...but it can be done with a tiny brush.... Afterall your just recreating the action of Insect Transferable pollination from one to another. I know Orchid growers are heavily into manual pollination.
Hi Ethel!! Thank u!! Unfortunately I only sell my plants at a local NJ Farmers market....I do sell the seeds to most of my plants on my Ebay listing known as " JIMS COLEUS "... But that starts in October thru March.
Hi Jim. Another great coleus season! With your rootings, do you leave them in water until spring? For example the fishnet you showed had a large root ball. Will you move that to a por or will it survive all winter just in water? Take care, Ray
Hey Ray.....I will keep all of my Rootings in water including the giant Fishnet. I will plant that next Spring. I will pot two of my Lord Voldemort rootings in a few weeks and keep both Some Rootings and two small pots for Overwintering.
I use regular tap water. There are two camps of people...those who believe Distilled water is better because all impurities were removed...others say that beneficial minerals were also removed. I've always used Tap....its easier and cost effective.
I will relist my seeds in the Fall...October until I run out...Im on Ebay....save "JIMS COLEUS" ... meantime two choices now...live plugs at www.rosydawngardens.com. or some seeds at www.swallowtailgardenseeds.com
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus thanks for your prompt response. I've probably seen every video of yours with the hopes you have done it. I've learned a lot from you. Thank you very much. Hope you will make a video, then I'll trust that it can be done.
Jim, I have the same problem and the same variety...you called it Lord voltemor...didn't know the name. It's such a stunning plant. I will do what you suggested
Hi Annie...Yes it was named after the character in Lord of the Rings!!! So I hope this helps you keep some rootings ....Im going to make a few small Overwintered clones toob
“OMG, Mr. Jim I only wish I could get a plant as full and beautiful as that never mind throwing it out, gee not even mine and I feel so sad. I’ve had my granddaughters coleus that she came home with over 7 years ago. It did get huge and lush for a long time but the more leaves I take off because they need to go then my poor plant looks sooooo leggy. Can’t seem to get trimming and not leggy down pat.” Can’t throw it out it’s all I have left of my granddaughter because my daughter won’t let ANY of the family see her. Sorry, very sad story. So I try so hard to keep her plant from dying. I remember the day she came home with it in a styrofoam cup (just a seed) and I’ve been trying my absolute best to not let it die. I got clippings I put in water but the leaves are looking somewhat wilted. Do I keep my clippings in water ALL winter? Or when they get roots can (or should I plant them) even if it’s not spring? Always indoors 🌿
Wow...thats a touching story...and Honestly I congratulate you on keeping it going for 7 years...particularly indoor!! WOW!!! Not certain of further details....but I too have my Lord Voldemort Coleus rootings which are from a Mother plants that I had about 4 years ago...One of my rootings I planted last yielded a small seed pod 2 years ago ....so That's my best advice....try to get seeds....Take multiple cuttings and root them. See how they do in water...to cover all the bases....you can Plant one of the cuttings after it has developed a decent root system....perhaps after a month...pot it up in good potting mixture and shower it with light!!! Good luck. Let me know how goes!!
I met this plant couple of years ago and fell in love with it. But it's very unlucky that not many people know and those who know just have very limited varieties . When I heard you are damping them away due to weather conditions made me feel so bad. I live in zone 10 so that means I can keep them them without sheltering all year long ! But the thing is I have no chance to find such beautiful and different varieties in my country. I wısh I had a chance to get some seeds from each to grow. I only have 4 varieties so far and would be more than happy to enlarge my collection of coleus. thank you for sharing these beauties of yours with us, they are adorable.
I will list my Seeds in September. Im sold out 😞. Save my Ebay store.. I have a shirt listed but this is my Ebay page www.ebay.com/itm/394440819723?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=ksvvexuaqq2&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=ksvvexuaqq2&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
It's possible. I hand pollinated an indoor Overwintered Saturns Rings Coleus....got about 100 seeds. I sowed about a dozen and so far they are developing true to the mother. But you are correct...cross pollination haw much to do with that... but I love the variety
Yeah, its depressing when you have a big beautiful pot of coleus and the end of the season comes. I don't have deep window sills, not a lot of options here... but theres always seed! I will be checking out your Ebay listings, hope you have some fishnet stockings and bright reds!
I have two cats and they steer clear of my Coleus....Also the few indoor & Overwintered ones I do keep are kept at places not even my cats can easily get to. But Coleus are toxic to cats and dogs....so if you want to keep them indoors again find a place not easily accessible to even Cats
My question is, why bother with seeds? Especially when they could have crossbred with another plant and not be the same plant that you want. I take cuttings put them in a fruit jar and in about three weeks they have plenty of roots and then I pot them in smaller pots in the house. If they get too big I trim them back and in the spring I plant them in larger pots outside.. Easy peasy
The cross pollination is a factor....but I separate my Coleus....though not a guarantee...I have found that my Seeds are very true to the plants...like my Jitters, Colossal Marble. As for why I grow from seed.... I plant 500 Plants.... And I SOOOO Look forward to growing them from Seed.... especially my Coleus Seeds which I purposely cross-pollinate.... I have gotten some Absolutely STUNNING variations that way like my Hot Pink Jitters!!! So there are very good reasons why Growing from Seeds is preferable.
The problem as I see it is since these plants were outside for several months, you don't want to take a chance of deep inside the pot of dirt there is an ant colony ready to pile out into the hospital or nursing home when the plant gets watered. It would be safer to take cuttings and root them in a pretty vase and give the vase to where ever.
Exactly!!!!Thank u Pat!! Any Coleus In the past that spent its life outside and was brought inside for Overwintering was treated for two weeks with Safer soap killing spray...but I've since gone the multiple Rootings and Smaller clone route to eliminate the risk of insects
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus Jim, same here for coleus I just take cuttings for over winter and let the plants in pots die. I have a small palm tree and a few tangerine trees that I grew from seeds....I put them out on the patio during warm weather but in autumn before I bring them back inside, over the course of two weeks they get three treatments with insecticidal soap on the leaves and a drench in the soil. And even after that, sometimes I notice spider mite webs after a month or two back in the house so I put them in the shower and give them another spraying,
@@PatC. I was just talking to a coworker who is starting his first potted indoor/ outdoor Lemon and Fig Trees !! Pat as always I APPRECIATE you adding your very valuable information. ❤️
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus I don't recall if I ever told you about my experiences with fig trees. My mother in law in NJ was gifted a fig tree, never told which kind it was. They planted it in the back yard, never protected it over winter yet it grew to 15 feet tall because they neglected to ever trim it. It may have helped that we had several mild winters. So finally 7 years ago she wanted it pruned to a lower height and I did it and kept 50 cuttings. Out of 50, I only succeeded in rooting 5 cuttings in potting mix. I now keep them in large pots in my yard in warm weather and dormant in my unheated garage during winter. Well last fall I took three cuttings off my biggest fig tree and put them in a jar of water on my kitchen windowsill. One rooted out of the three, so I have learned that they root better in water for me. That newly rooted fig cutting I potted up this spring and put it outside and it is now about a foot tall. I also took one of my other potted fig trees this month and planted it in the ground so I'm going to need to wrap it to protect it during the cold season here in NJ. I wanted one in the ground so that it will grow bigger so I have more cuttings to make new trees.

So here in Idaho our winters are like 6 months what happens when your cuttings have so much roots do you trim some roots or put it in a😊 bigger jar with water
Good Question!! I root Fishnets each year and they always produce an abundance of root...a huge root ball!! So I place these particular cuttings in my larger Bud vases. I never trim the rootball. They will intertwine well ...but its very important to gently rinse the Rootball at each weekly water change which keeps the Roots healthy and clean. So as your rootings develop if the rootball seems bigger than the bud vases capacity then you can transfer it to the next larger budvase later in Winter. REMEMBER TO CHANGE WATER WEEKLY!!!

Excellent Suggestions!! My wife is always dropping off and exchanging at Good Will . Great tip and your correct you'll never know what they have !
Perfect timing for bringing up the subject. I'm already dreading the winter because I don't want to see my babies go. Thanks again for your heart felt videos. Your a joy to watch. ☺
Thank you gena!! 😊
My sister & I watched your great video, then rewatched, and drank every time you say “whadayoudo”! Thanks for the info, the fun, and the hangover 😅 Love from Long Island!
I'm lovin' this comment!!! HEEEY WHERES MY DRINK??!!!
Love your videos Jim. I watched all of them. Thanks for sharing 🙋
Hey Sean. Really appreciate that!!! I'm almost finished with and will be posting a new video on Labor Day Monday sometime!! Thank you for your loyalty & support!!
I'm in love with that flower.
They definitely have that effect!!
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus The marbles keep the light bottles stable so they don't fall over as easily.
God Bless You - Your plants are STUNNING!
Your Very Kind. God Bless you. I appreciate this very motivating Comment!!
Excellent help, thank you
I'm starting an indoor plants in my basement getting gtow lights and do rooting !!
You should do well..... Make sure they are "Full Spectrum" LED grow lights.
Your Saturns are stunning
Thanks Nanette!! It's been an extra challenge this year...the Heatwaves accelerated the growth ...I was constantly trimming them.
I just left a comment/question on one of your older videos and I believe this one may have helped more on what to do with such a large coleus. Just hope it's not too late. We just went thru a few days straight of wind & rain in the 50's (central NJ).
I will certainly get to it. And I can't thank you enough in advance for the Tips!
I wish you lived closer to here you taught me everything I know about Coleus plants and I would love to have half of some you have sadly I can't find many Colues plants in my small town..
So 😞 sorry. You can order live Coleus plugs which they ship to your home.....

This is great idea. I will surely do this at home
Thank you!! Good luck and feel free to ask if you need any advice!
Hello my dear friend. Your kolyos flowers look great. They all have their own beauty. I enjoy watching your videos. I appreciate your work and enthusiasm. Congratulations. I wish you continued success. I send greetings and respects from Türkiye / Kütahya.

I just got a couleseus and I am starting to duplicate it how big pot should I plant it in. do you Answer every comment ? 🤔 🙂 😉 😏 😄
Good luck!!
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus thank you

THANKS FOR WATCHING!!!
I wish u were closer. I am collecting different varieties I have twenty. I would absolutely buy some
Lol....I get many people who say this. I'm humbled. Here's a great Coleus supplier which sell live plugs starting each January. They are Excellent.... I use them to expand my Coleus collection aswell!!

Omg ! I would NOT say good bye bring th inside lol lovely!!!
😆🤣 I know!!! Buy its a part of raising These wonderful Coleus!! But it is sad to see them go 😔
Last year I rooted cuttings in water and they produced beautiful blue flowers all winter.
Thanks!!!
Hi thanks for the lovely videos, the cuttings you take during the winter /fall , do they need lighting
Absolutely!!! I place them in two locations which get abundant daylight.

Here's a link to one of my videos on Overwintering a Coleus.
COLEUS...🍂 A world of COLOURS.
Very True!! And Shapes too!!
Could you tell how to make your "soap spray" please ?? Thanks !!!

@@Yankeesista203 Not Really....I knew which you referred to.....Now if you called it Lord Philadelphia Lol!!
Do you keep the cuttings in water the whole time through the winter?
Hi Debbie!! Yes I Do!! Frequent consistent (weekly) water changes ....Best I can...I may skip a week here & there. Scroll back a few I did a video on how I keep them alive all Winter into Spring!
I'd bring the planter in but what about spiders and or ants in the soil ?
Can I spray or re pot?
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus Thanks so much for youre quick response
If they aren't propagating well I'll cut bottom rooting stem at 45 degree angle and put back in cinnamon water to start all over again.
Keep it in warm house in a sunny window.
Interesting....Do you find the cinnamon really beneficial for the cuttings? I'm a big advocate of water changes.... not just for Coleus but cut flowers which I recommend DAILY.
Here in Brazil there are a lot of beautiful Coleus.
I'm learning more and more the many other countries which grow Coleus !
Which do you think is better. In vaces or right into soil? I've been having little luck with right into soil 😕

I leave them as Rootings with near weekly water changes straight thru until I plant them outdoors late next Spring
Thanks
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus Okay, I might give it a try then! Thank you :)

Hi Ethel!!

Hey MrWolfheart!!! Cool name....and You are very welcome!!!
Can’t seem to get trimming and not leggy down pat.”
Can’t throw it out it’s all I have left of my granddaughter because my daughter won’t let ANY of the family see her.

Mason jars are the best for me
They Work !! And are decorative and hold a fair amount of water.
Many of the newer varieties of coleus will not come true from seed. You would have to take cuttings.
It's possible. I hand pollinated an indoor Overwintered Saturns Rings Coleus....got about 100 seeds. I sowed about a dozen and so far they are developing true to the mother. But you are correct...cross pollination haw much to do with that... but I love the variety
Also newer varieties are almost always PATENTED....so I don't propagate those. And some won't go to seed too as I think you mentioned correctly.
Yeah, its depressing when you have a big beautiful pot of coleus and the end of the season comes. I don't have deep window sills, not a lot of options here... but theres always seed! I will be checking out your Ebay listings, hope you have some fishnet stockings and bright reds!
Thank you Kathy!!!
Can I have it inside if I have cats?
I have two cats and they steer clear of my Coleus....Also the few indoor & Overwintered ones I do keep are kept at places not even my cats can easily get to. But Coleus are toxic to cats and dogs....so if you want to keep them indoors again find a place not easily accessible to even Cats

I do not ship live plants. You can go to my "JIMS COLEUS " Listing on Ebay in October and buy my seeds. I ship to England & internationally

Would it be feasible to donate any extra plants to a hospital or nursing home? They are so beautiful it would be a shame to toss them out.

@@Jimswholiestofcoleus I watched about 10 of your videos in a row. Unfortunately I have many ailments that are triggered by that type of teaching. I did enjoy the information though. On my good days I will watch more. But not as many in a row. Thank you for responding. I have subscribed in case you would like to know. I only comment on channels that interest me. So I was just hoping that I could get you to be less repetitive. If you are doing it on purpose then I will not mention it again. By the way I respect that you support charities. Have a good day
@@liseforget1687 No worries .....I did not take your comments as BLATANTLY HURTFUL as some people ( very few thankfully) have in some other videos. There is Always room for improvement in my Videos....Im certainly not a Professional....So I will THANK YOU and use your suggestion as a guide to improve future Videos.
Very nice video but...OMgosh, I'm not trying to be unkind but they are Cuttings not "rootings". Rooting is a process, not a noun. They are rooted cuttings. My degree is in Horticultiure and I have never heard that word used like that, probably why it made me kinda nuts every time you said it. :) When you plant a cutting that has rooted you would say "That plant is from a cutting. (Don't want your viewers to learn the wrong word either.) Sorry, Jim, don't mean to offend, just enlighten.
Patricia....No Worries....I learn from my viewers...and I understand COMPLETELY your point....Ive mentioned that I'm not a Horticulturalist...Im in Law Enforcement....this is my Hobby. I guess I look at my cuttings and Generalize them as what they ultimately will become....My " ROOTINGS " I Do appreciate and understand how this can make someone whose a Horticultural Field Professional...So I will definitely take your point and fine tuning my future videos. THANK YOU !! 😊
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus Thank you for your kind reply. Love your coleus work. I almost cry when I have to let them go in the Fall here in N.H. I do take cuttings but I bring One big pot in to enjoy until I leave here in December. I have about 12 large container plantings on my deck:Coleus, Cannas, Elephant Ears, Geraniums, grasses, even a rose (3 years old now) and Liatris in pots. It hurts to let the the big bulbs get frosted to die back, even knowing they will be tucked away in the garage and basement to spend the winter before being brought back to life in the spring.
Jim, do you grow any blue coleus?
@@patriot20000BLUE COLEUS??? I LOVE coleus, and I would definitely love to find a BLUE one…… Are they real? I see blue flowers and plants, but the photos always look photoshopped.
After 4 min of What do you do? What do you do? I quit watching.
And I'm THANKFUL for That because I DO NOT want venomous People such as Yourself watching . Tell me something.....What is it deep down that drives You... compels You to feel the need to leave such a Comment. A MISERABLE PERSON I'm guessing....
Too bad you don't come to the point. You have good info, you just ramble on and on. Geezzz.
I teach by repeating. If your looking for a Professional Staged Plant & Horticultural channel with fancy terms and clean editing then your on the wrong channel.
