People! This is the number one place to come for everything Coleus! These were the perfect plants to show general cutting/trimming/shaping, Jim...They are just STUNNING! Betty :)
I trimmed my coleus today. It was soooo hard! Some of my leaves were as big as my hand. And this is my indoor coleus. I am trusting what you said Jim because you are the expert and your coleus are beautiful.
No worries Cynthia....This early pruning maintenance will pay off!! It is difficult clipping the leaves particularly the big kongs ....but its necessary. After a bit of time when the Coleus is nice and full I'll just trim the tops and and worn damaged leaves which isn't as tough to do.
Planting coleus from seeds for the first time. Really needed this lesson. You answered my questions on trimming which I now know how to do. Wish more people showed us trimming on different plants! Thank you so much!!!!
I have 151 coleus plants in my front/side yard with 92 different varieties. Some of the planters can't be seen because my coleus are so big and bushy! I also have some that just keep wanting to flower. These plants I got early spring when stores started putting them out. The plants were very root bound. My opinion is that the plants were hold over from the growers during the pandemic last year, so the plants were already a year old when I got them. What sucks is that they didn't/aren't really get very tall because I have to keep pinching them and fighting them to live through the summer. Also little green worms eating giant holes in my leaves. The funny thing is, the worms have a preference on leaves. They ate my henna coleus leaves but never touch indian summer coleus in the same pot! Crazy! Anyway, your plants are stunning as usual. Wish there was a way to post pics so I could share pictures with you of my coleus plants. The rings around my trees are absolutely gorgeous! Have a happy coleus day! And thanks for all the great info you put out!
Wow!! Andrea...sounds like you have a fabulous display!!! You can absolutely send me pictures to my Instagram or Facebook page thru the Messenger. Pests are tough....Im guessing the henna is easiest to get to?? Or perhaps the leaves have an easier more pleasant texture to eat.....But do send me those pics. Im also at jimswholiestofcoleus@gmail.com
Wow,is there a link or page i can see your plethora of plants? What zone are you in? Do you save seed and do you overwinter them? I would love to see them. I have 10 different varieties, and several of each so i am trying to learn all i can to maintain, propagate and multiply my plants. I don't know if I should invest in a greenhouse or not? Thanks for your story!!!
You saved my Coleus. Bought a monster in Chicago w/ no knowledge only that it's orange and fall colors and I had to bring it back to Indy w/ me. Thanks for your very informative pruning vid & excellent recording from your boy. 👍 I will keep my coleus live & healthy.
New subscriber here from the Philippines. I just started to collect Coleus early of the year 2019. Since then I can't stop myself not to have those varieties I don't have yet whenever I see one anywhere. Some are given to me by friends but most I bought from the garden shop. Last week, I started to make this plant as a business by selling the rooted cuttings. That's why I'm searching ideas and knowledge how to take care of them very well until I saw your channel. Thank you for teaching us!
Hi Elias!! Thank you so much for Subscribing and for the confidence!! I hope you find my extensive list of Coleus videos helpful. I think I've covered all Coleus related issues plus ideas on potting etc. I am also on Instagram and I have a Facebook page too if you need to get in touch or have Questions!!
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus been watching the videos since yesterday and it really helps me a lot. I did pruning yesterday cutting off the tips to make them bushy. I really do not know what should I do because some of my plants are leggy until I found the techniques here. I'll check out your IG and FB. Thanks and God bless Sir!
I love your coleus!!!! They are huge and look very healthy. Thanks for the tips on pruning these plants. It was helpful. It was hard to remove so many leaves, but in the long run, it will produce a more vibrant plant. (I hope)
I LOVE YOUR PLANTS!!! Thanks for this video because I just bought 2 BEAUTIFUL coleus plants andl they're actually the 1st plants that I have ever bought. A week later I thought that I had killed them with too much water because they were so lanky and sad but someone told me to water them even more Anne within 45 mins of re-watering they were standing at attention VERY HAPPY AND ALIVE!!! I have no idea what I'm doing but after watching this, I feel VERY confident in caring for my plants!💓💓💓💓💓
I'm glad you found my video & channel just in time!! I have many many videos to guide you through the whole growing season and beyond!! Any problems give me a shout!! Glad to help!!! GOOD LUCK!!
I brought mine in during the winter & snipped off the flower ends. The plant got up so huge that I was able to bring it back out side in spring. I will definitely snip it off to encourage inner growth, although it was amazing to see that the leaves got larger than my hand! Thanks for the video.
Hi Linda... Yes Overwintered Coleus will do well in a bright window...and regular maintenance trimming including especially seed stalks will get you into Spring. One thing you will have to do eventually is repot as a Coleus Root structure gets soooo massive it eventually takes over an depletes much of the soil as you will notice when popping it out into a newer bigger pot.
Lol!! That's what I want!! Sometimes I need to take my own advice too. I can be VERY CRITICAL of myself . Glad you got something out of my Videos!! Much appreciated!!
I planted coleuses for the first time this Spring and boy oh boy has to been rewarding! Talk about fast growth! I have a beautiful pink and lime green one that I want to propagate. Similar to this one but more pink. Think I'll trim my potted one up tomorrow.
Awesome!! Coleus are a prolific Plant....and sounds like you have a Beautiful Rose Kong??? One of my favorites which I grow Hundreds of and sell every single one!! They keep on growing. And by trimming you will have a huge full healthy Plant in no time and as you trim....new growth is stimulated!! Thanks for watching. I hope u Subscribe and follow Along!!
I just found your channel as I received a chocolate mint coleus and it's quite tall and bare towards the bottom. I did some trimming so that I could water propagate some stems and plant them to try and get the plant to be a bit fuller and not so top heavy. I'm not sure if I should cut the whole plant right down or what I should do. I'd love to show you pics of my coleus and get your thoughts. I've never grown a coleus before and after seeing how beautiful yours are; I can't wait to transform this plant if that's possible. Thank you!
Hi Jim!! Thanks so much for this video! You've given me the incentive to get snippin' tomorrow. I love to see the big leaves, along with the other ones. To me, it reminds me of family clusters. But since they are so prolific ( lol), I won't feel so bad at seeing them go. Great filming by your son!
At the age of 36, I got my first lil coleus. It's a purple one with a purple stem that just got its first green/pink leaves in the middle of the purple. I think its a mix of a couple different types, I don't know, it doesn't look like any of the coleus types but like a hybrid of the watermelon and the all-purple one. If that's even possible. Anyway, it's my baby. It lives on my dresser in my bedroom and only wants to grow tall but not set many leaves. So today I drew out the scissors for the first time and cut the top leaves off in the hope that it becomes bushier. It's not meant to grow here in Northern Scandinavia, within the Arctic circle but I mean, it's inside, in the warm, far away from wind and cold. I hope it survives being "cut off" in the top and sets a few more bushy leaves. This video made me become brave enough to try ...
Hello Wirina!!! What a nice story!!! I certainly am pulling for your Coleus to grow new undergrowth too!! Thank you for watching and sharing your story!! Please keep in touch!!! I am on Instagram as well!!!
Thank you for your nice video🙏💞 Allways so nice to see your lovelly coleus videos and interresting What you do whit them💖💞🍀omg😱😱YOU have so beautiful coleus plats They are Soo... Big💖💞💖💞
Great video. Coleus are my favorite. I do everything he does and he is totally right. Trimming means everything. It's not really good to let them go to seed but I do let a few of my mine so I can get the seeds. Then the next year I have amazing colors because of the bee pollination of the different flowers. And they do need more care in a pot.
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus Thank YOU, great video! I have some beautiful coleus right now but I'm having problems with rabbits or either squirrels eating them. I think it's rabbits though. I have some red chili pepper powder that I'm going to try to mix with water and make a spray. I hope it works LOL!
@eydimyers1654 Thank you. Especially in these Times. This video was before the even wore vitriol of today. Obviously I'm not trying nor do I make my channel Political. We ALL Need a respite....there's a time & place to fight that and it's not here...just as it shouldn't be at Concerts etc . THANK YOU !!
I have a kong coleus I just got this spring. I had one years ago that got huge but I don't remember if I trimmed side shoots. Guess I'll try it. Thanks Jim!
Kongs are MONSTERS!!! Yes if you pot it up....trim the tops ....it will stimulate side growth. ( IT WANTS TO GROW...UP OR OUTWARD)!! That is why keeping the height at bay will ensure a Full Monster Kong or other Variety!!
Hi Thanks for the vote of confidence!! 😀 In the Hottest part of Summer I may water twice a day. I use Miracle-Gro General Purpose plant food which mixes into ac2 gallon water can. I fertilize every 10 /12 days. Also maintenance by trimming and old worn or torn leaves. I also keep it a specific height vying for a rounded full compact planter rather than a tall one.
hey jim, i just got 8 coleus plants, 3 of them are flowering and i have decided to leave the flowers on for seeds, how do i extract seeds. also should i plant them in the ground so they spread or keep them in pots?(i just want them to grow as big as they can) and lastly how do i keep insects away from them? my bad for the big lot of questions, you seem very experienced with these plants and a reply from you would mean alot, thanks!
Hi Alvs!! Thanks for watching and hope you SUBSCRIBE!! I have Loads of videos on everything Coleus.... I like to pot my Coleus.....they present well in pots and are less susceptible to insects. As for insect control...Get the product known as " Safer Insect Spray Soap" or an equivalent brand. It kills most Coleus insects. As for how to separate Coleus seeds...here is a link to one of my many how to videos!! Thanks again ruclips.net/video/QeZmVwDfn5s/видео.html
I would love to know the varieties you're working on here. Also what is the name of that exceptionally gorgeous cutting/start sitting in the glass jar at 2:39 in the background? Love the extra long pointed leaves dark maroon outlined in thin green. A stunner. All your plants are so HAPPY!
Hi Kindafoggy!! Love your name!!! I'm in Law Enforcement and work primarily 12 hr overnight shifts so That's how I feel most days!!! Lol Anyway Firstly THANKS for taking the time to look at my video and comment. I hope you SUBSCRIBE...I have SOOOO MANY great Coleus videos I've shot over the years and make more nearly every week or two!!! The Rooting Coleus group in the vase background on the pavement are DEFIANCE COLEUS. They are Beautiful and such prolific growing plants...even in full hot Sun....but it requires daily watering if kept there. Although I try to expand my collection thru the years My main Go to Coleus are KONGS, JITTERS,DEFIANCE,SATURN,DARTH VADER, and BLACK STOCKINGS. KALEIDOSCOPE , I have a mixture of some darker Wizard Varieties..... Deep Purple with green edges. Jitters are the slender thin Coleus which are perfect for hanging baskets. KONGS are my ABSOLUTE favorite...They as well as Jitters are mixed into the two large Concrete Planters Featured in this trimming video. The larger the planter the more varieties I plant together which by Late June/July are Gorgeous overflowing Arrangements. I also credit Miracle Grow Water soluble General purpose plant food feedings every 2 weeks!!!!
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus Thank you so much for the shopping list Jim. I'm on it! All the coleus you mention are perfect foils for big leathery hostas and ferny ferns. I just love the velvet and the contrast. All your information is so helpful to us. I really appreciate it! And yes, years and years of graveyard shifts in the foggy Seattle nights have kept me Kindafoggy, that's for sure. Sunshine and daylight are a blessing to a night owl, eh?!
I always have a pot or two of coleus in my containers. I guess I would never have thought to trim them down. Like, big or go home...lol. but after seeing you do the cuttings, not only do I see it is necessary but looks very nice. I will definitely do this now. Also, how does the water drain from the tall ceramic pots? I shy away from them because of being concerned about root rotting. Thank you for this informative video. First time viewer.
These pots are sooo tall....I has placed a bunch of stone at the bottom. So far over the past 8 years they have been used I have not had Root issues. They are the only pots I have without drain holes. They are way to expensive to risk drilling even with a Ceramic stone bit.
Hi!! Glad you found my channel!! I have many videos to teach you everything about Coleus from the moment you plant the seeds or buy your Plant thru the season and beyond. Here is a link to one of my popular "Trimming " videos !!! ruclips.net/video/dyDqEsPM--o/видео.html
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus Wow! That is amazing! Can’t wait to see them. Sometimes my Kong coleus get mites. I do spray them with the soap but still loose them. Wondering if I am not keeping them pruned as much as I should. Hmm
@@reneesimmons4817 The Spray Soap although natural can be a bit harsh so use sparingly but very important... especially these Big leaf Kongs....Spray the underside....thats where these critters love to hang out. Just like We do at an Outdoor Sports Bar or restaurant....We seek some shade, a cool breeze and a bit of sun. So make sure you check the underside.
Its Winter here now and cuttings are rooting in water, but if this is suppose to be the dormant season for them, when can i start putting the cuttings in pots with soil? 3 months from now? Late March or April?
Hi Anthony....I keep Rootings specifically to be planted in my larger Outdoor planters. So I wait until after the last Frost date which is generally late April Early May. Technically once Rooted...you can pot them indoors.....and keep them as indoor Coleus as We March towards Spring you can fertilize...but keep them warm, Well lit and watered
Hi Martin!! Excellent!! It's not complicated...sure there's going to be some learning curve stuff but I try to bring up the major points in easy to follow broad points.... like moderation of Sunlight, moisture and shade
Excellent Sara!! Please look over more of my videos...GO COLEUS CRAAAZZZZY!! Cut branches when it gets larger and root them..... then pot those and you have a clone from the mother plant!! Lots of fun!! :)
I've just bought some small coleus, planted in a trough, growing nicely. Will take your advice to get bushy plants, good tips. Hard to get hold of in UK at moment.
Good Luck Sandra!! If your looking to expand your Coleus palette....try www.swallowtailgardenseeds.com/annuals/coleus.html They ship Coleus seeds internationally. Have a decent variety....of course You could start a few now if you have an indoor area where you can set up a Growlight come Winter...or wait until next season.
Hi Jim, Thank you for all nice videos you are sharing. I want to ask: 1-why you trim the seeds? I did trim my seeds from last 2 months but I did not get new anymore???? 2-if I cut a giant monster stem with some leaves from the top for germinating? will I get new leaves? Thanks from your big fan From Yemen
Hello Follow your Dreams!! When a Coleus plant starts to develop seed stalks its actually telling itself that it's time to renew and triggers the end of its lifecycle....it will begin to decline because much energy is diverted to seed development rather than Plant leaves, color etc. I absolutely like to collect Coleus seeds..... but during my Coleus growing season I trim or pinch off early seed stalk development until about September...then I will let them develop as Eventually the Winter frost will kill it here. This I do to Coleus which I want seeds from. Hope this clarified your question
Hi Tracy....I root on occasion ...mostly at the end of the growing season...but not while trimming leaves. As for insects I suggest "Safer" brand or equivalent insect Soap spray.
Hi Tonya!! Thank you for the helpful comment!! Yes I do...but I only save certain specific cuttings at specific times to root later. Any Coleus cut will propagate!
Just discovered you Jim ! Thanks for the tips, I picked up three or four "reduced for fast sale" coleus for $1 each. They're thriving. And, I am growing some from seed. Would love to see your take on that subject.
Thanks Richard.....glad you found me....I have well over 200 videos over the years that pretty much covers Everything from Seeding to Harvesting Seed and Everything in between. I also have an ebay listing "Jims Coleus" which starts in October....I sell the seeds to pretty much all of my Coleus featured in my Videos. Glad to have you aboard. It means a whole lot! Also subscribe to me on Instagram if you're on it. Its a great venue as well !
I got some coleus seeds, and I planted them but they're taking forever to grow and by the way they don't look like coleus they look like clover. I don't know whether they're coleus or not I feel like I got ripped off. They're green and they're about 3 or 4 in Long. Can you tell me what they're supposed to look like by now I've had them growing for a little over a month
Hi Rose Boyd-Prince..... Here is a link to one of my videos which will show what Coleus germinations look like. ruclips.net/video/MwgLSOutGYA/видео.html
I appreciate you replying back perhaps I didn't make myself clear I thought that I let you know that they weren't brand new seedlings I thought I told you that they had been growing for a month and they were 3 to 4 in Long the video that you took me to showed baby seedlings that's not what I needed I needed to know what they look like after a couple weeks but I appreciate your effort thank you very much and good luck in your endeavors
Hey Jim! Ive planted some coleus seeds and have used a propagator/incubator. Ive let them grow and today when I went to check them and i have a lot which have grown really leggy :( they were covered with a transparent plastic cover so had very good sunlight, I have no idea what could have went so wrong. Is there any chance I can save them or shall I discard them? If I transplant them and bury most of the stem in soil will it grow well?
Hmmmmm.... if you can send me a picture to chewchjz@yahoo.com If they are still young germinations then they have along way to go. They may not be leggy as much as just young...they will be long , thin and lanky even fall over but as they mature they will strengthen & straighten up . But send me those pictures....Don't panic ! Lol
@@taylarogers313 Hi Tayla.... A " Leggy" Coleus means it has long stems usually with minimal amount of leaves that tends to droop or fall over. Dont confuse a Wilted Coleus which is where the leaves droop down around the stem because of a lack of water. A Leggy Coleus will look "spidery" thin with little leaf growth. This is mostly caused by a lack of the amount of Sunlight....or too much Nitrogen ( Fertilizer) in the soil or both. Most times if you cut the Coleus down and increase the amount of time it gets SUN....Not necessarily direct Sun but " SUNLIGHT" . Moving it to a brighter place with less shade...it will develop better fuller leaf growth.
Oh ABSOLUTELY!! When your Coleus grows branches & branches...You can snip off a branch...cut the leaves leaving two and root ot in water ..... in 4 -5 days roots will appear and you can pot it. Or you can place it straight in a pot with moist soil...but the soil must remain moist to promote the roots.
Thanks. I actually got a Nasty comment from some Socialist LIBTARD..... who Saud something to the effect that they USED to like following my channel but after seeing my REAGAN Shirt they can't watch. I normally don't answer that but I'm tired of these IDIOTS...So I said to them YES PLEASE...UNSUBSCRIBE and if Any of your friends or family subscribe too and think as you do please ask them to Unsubscribe as well as I can't have you littering my channel...and I can't teach IGNORANT PEOPLE. Thanks Stuart!! Yes please SUBSCRIBE and follow along....As my Coleus progress I'll be posting more videos.....I also have many videos in my list to help grow Coleus. As for my deck I chose the Timbrex which is a composite decking that requires only cleaning but no traditional nstural wood cleaning or refinishing. It is much more expensive than regular decking but over time pays for itself.
Hi Sandra!! Yes potted Coleus can be brought inside during Winter. Most Not All will make it thru Spring...however they will "molt" or lose many leaves and also due to shorter days the leaf color will become less vibrant...and finally the overall growth of the Coleus will drastically slow...basically the Coleus will be in Hibernation. To increase the success of making it thru Winter....Additional Light and warmth can be created by using an LED Plant light
All my colues planst suddenly went limp and died off, I was distraught, I've kept them in place over Winter (I am in the Southern Hemisphere) hoping they may spring back to life. The Sun isn't getting to them at all but thought they liked shade! Any advice? Thanks for the video.
Hi Moon Fire Magic.... Sorry to hear your troubles. Coleus do like a bit of shade....but they ABSOLUTELY need Sunlight to grow and develop. Each Coleus Variety differs in the amount of Sun it benefits from. Some of the smaller delicate Coleus may burn too easily with even a small amount of direct Sun...while others like my larger leafed Kongs do very well...as long as they are watered and maintained in well drained soil. I suggest you increase it's Sun and warmth exposure. Ease off if you are watering too often...especially if it's in primary shaded location. See how the additional Sun affects it.....if it looks like your losing it and there are a few healthy branches try cutting and rooting to start a new plant.... The only downfall there is if the plant is inherently a poor plant then its offspring will probably continue in that direction. Ultimately however there are many environmental reasons that could have caused its downfall. Trick is experience and experimentation. Good luck. Please let me know how u make out.
Jim's Wholiest of Coleus ha! that’s a great name too. I just loved Reagan, so it caught my eye. Thanks for the great content. Hope you keep posting. Great channel. Told my mom bout you too. @@Jimswholiestofcoleus So you don’t fertilize them? Just what’s in the soil? I have potting soil so that’s ok to use? Thank you! Glad I found someone who has nice plants to learn from! I never really liked these before! I more a flower lover, but they are actually a very beautiful plant that brings so much colour! Ps I’m a Barber so my shears are siesta sharp! 😆
Coleus do best with some Sun...whether Morning or Evening Sun. These planters shown here are both in either Full Sun most of the Day or partial Sun. One of them has a Rose Of Sharon tree next to it which filters the strong direct sun...but it gets late sun. Coleus are not Mushrooms.....even though they are considered Shade loving plants that isnt entirely correct....They REQUIRE SUN.
Dropping leaves usually means it's light Starved. Increase the light. Not necessarily direct Sun but Bright daylight....or mixed sunlight if you can. Also don't overwater and make sure pot has drain holes
Hi Merveille!! Thank you so much for the recommendation and the confidence!! I am looking forward to this year.....April has been chilly in NJ...hoping to get my Coleus outside into my outdoor Greenhouse. ..where the real growth happens!!
Yes if the plant is very full you may trim it down. Your going to see alot of molting of leaves anyway..... Its important to keep as much light ...a plant light will help...but keep watch over the soil as it can dry out quickly.
Hi Marsha!! Thanks for your question. I hope you SUBSCRIBE as well and take a look thru my many Coleus videos!! Coleus can be potted or planted straight in the ground. Either or. I personally Pot most of mine but I do plant a bunch around a Maple Tree in front of my house. Just be sure that wherever you decide to put Coleus you (depending on your location) you dont plant them or place them outdoors too early...both Maturity wise and time of year. I'm in NJ....I dont place my Coleus outdoors until May when all danger of Frost and temperature are clearly above the 60's. Also familiarize yourself with "Hardening your Coleus " which is a way to gradually introduce Coleus to the stresses of being outdoors. Check my list of videos as I cover that. Lastly Coleus ARE PERENNIAL However they are not like traditional Perennials like say Black eye Susan or Montauk Daisy..... Coleus seed themselves but die off upon the first frost. In the Tropics they continue to reseed themselves which is why they consider them perennial. Ultimately in the Winter Zones....they are Annuals :(
That all depends....Largely on where you live. If you're in a warm low zone climate and don't receive a Frost or snow then essentially your Coleus can thrive all year long with proper trimming and feeding. If you live say in NJ or a high zone which gets Frost... Winters of Snow and Cold sub 40° temps and IF YOU ENJOY KEEPING AND HAVE ROOM FOR INDOOR PLANTS....and have a Bright area which receives an abundance of not necessarily direct Sun...but Bright daylight...preferably a Southern exposing window or baywindow then Yes you can bring in or Overwinter your Coleus. I choose not to Overwinter Pots of any significant amount...but choose to keep seeds and I cut and root stems of certain varieties.

Root rot causes....a Pot without drain holes.....Too much water....too frequently and or too late in the day. The best way to assure that you don't get Root rot is water earlier in day....skip a day if not in dry sunny location and Be sure water can drain away from Roots. Skip a day of watering occasionally.
Am avut și eu Coleus dar l-am pierdut iarna la frig. A înflorit și crescut superb toată vara Mulțumim pentru sfaturile utile Poate daca puteți să traduceți descrierea că nu se înțelege Mulțumim frumos
Yes...in a way . Most Coleus develop seed stalks.....Most. You can keep a Coleus trim throughout the growing season to maintain a nice full healthy plant.....towards the end of the growing season as it becomes hotter and more humid It will grow fuller and faster and you will notice seed stalks developing. If You don't want to collect the seeds then keep trimming the Tops.....nipping off the seed stalks as well.... If you want seed stalks...let a few develop and trim the rest of the Coleus as a single stalk will yield hundreds of seeds!!
They are so beautiful! Do you happen to know the name of those variety since I have both of them that i just got the other day, thank you for the informative video

Based on my years of experience....the ideal location for a healthy full Coleus is a place which gets A mixture of both....next to a tree or bushes where either the Coleus gets filtered sunlight or direct Sun in morning or late afternoon. You can grow coleus in direct sun...but be prepared for more watering.
Jim's Wholiest of Coleus My coleus gets direct sun from 7am to mid day, watering schedule always at 4 or 5pm. few of them are starting to fade in color. Do you think its because the direct sun?
Hello Ponty....its a possibility.....the only way to know for sure is experimentation.....Try moving the planter to a place which gets a bit less Sun. I have experimented and found that it was the case.
I'm no expert in Coleus medicinal purposes....I do know there are only a very small select few on the darkest leaf varieties that can be used as a Tea...but I've never had it. Thank you. Of course Plants and Medicine are hand in hand...just havent researched the medicinal.

I have 10 different varieties, and several of each so i am trying to learn all i can to maintain, propagate and multiply my plants. I don't know if I should invest in a greenhouse or not? New subscriber here from the Philippines. I just started to collect Coleus early of the year 2019. Since then I can't stop myself not to have those varieties I don't have yet whenever I see one anywhere. Some are given to me by friends but most I bought from the garden shop. Last week, I started to make this plant as a business by selling the rooted cuttings. That's why I'm searching ideas and knowledge how to take care of them very well until I saw your channel. Thank you for teaching us!

It absolutely makes a difference!! That and General Purpose plant fertilizer!
Thank you for explaining the way you did and saying not to worry. Lol. That’s exactly what everyone wants to hear 😅
Lol!! That's what I want!! Sometimes I need to take my own advice too. I can be VERY CRITICAL of myself . Glad you got something out of my Videos!! Much appreciated!!

hey Jim , I enjoyed your video. im inlove with coleus, they are so beautiful and easy to grow. thanks for the trimming tips.

Hi Paisley...I hope you're still having good results if your still growing Coleus. I'm sorry I didn't reply....Sometimes I miss some notifications.

Technically once Rooted...you can pot them indoors.....and keep them as indoor Coleus as We March towards Spring you can fertilize...but keep them warm, Well lit and watered

what type of coleus is this, the green and pink?
Hi bowler8...Those are KONG COLEUS. You usually find them included in store bought Coleus "Rainbow mix" seeds
Hi Jim,
Thank you for all nice videos you are sharing.
I want to ask:
1-why you trim the seeds?
Can you start new plants from the pruning your doing? Do you suggest something for the insects? Nice clear video! Thank you
Hi Tracy....I root on occasion ...mostly at the end of the growing season...but not while trimming leaves. As for insects I suggest "Safer" brand or equivalent insect Soap spray.
This is great tip from you, thank you for sharing.

It’s very easy to propagate coleus. Only cuttings.
Hmmmmm.... if you can send me a picture to chewchjz@yahoo.com
If they are still young germinations then they have along way to go. They may not be leggy as much as just young...they will be long , thin and lanky even fall over but as they mature they will strengthen & straighten up . But send me those pictures....Don't panic ! Lol
What does "leggy" mean?
Abosco is from Nigeria. How can I get the plants and landscape design books please?
Jim cant you trim them and the stem and propergate them
Oh ABSOLUTELY!! When your Coleus grows branches & branches...You can snip off a branch...cut the leaves leaving two and root ot in water ..... in 4 -5 days roots will appear and you can pot it. Or you can place it straight in a pot with moist soil...but the soil must remain moist to promote the roots.
GREAT shirt dude👍🤣

Thank You Mahsa!! I'm glad you like it and We are fortunate to have these Beautiful Coleus!!
Love coleus ...can u bring them inside during winter ❄️ great video...yours are gorgeous 💯

Hi jim do you keep your coleus in shade or in the sun ??
Coleus do best with some Sun...whether Morning or Evening Sun. These planters shown here are both in either Full Sun most of the Day or partial Sun. One of them has a Rose Of Sharon tree next to it which filters the strong direct sun...but it gets late sun.
Coleus are not Mushrooms.....even though they are considered Shade loving plants that isnt entirely correct....They REQUIRE SUN.
Hello,
Coleus can survive in the sun? I have two inside my house and the leaves started falling off but it has babies coming in.
Dropping leaves usually means it's light Starved. Increase the light. Not necessarily direct Sun but Bright daylight....or mixed sunlight if you can. Also don't overwater and make sure pot has drain holes

I have 3 different variety I got recently and they all need a trim but I keep them indoors. Is it ok to trim even though it’s October in NY?
Yes if the plant is very full you may trim it down. Your going to see alot of molting of leaves anyway..... Its important to keep as much light ...a plant light will help...but keep watch over the soil as it can dry out quickly.

Are these plants for pots only ? And also are they perennials? Thanks in advance
Ultimately in the Winter Zones....they are Annuals :(
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus thank you so much.

Gracias!!❤
should I bring my plant in for the winter
Wow wow

FANTASTIC SHIRT
Thank you Vincent for your excellent work!
Thank You Amy!! I try to keep my channel Non Political....To tell you the truth I didn't even think about having the shirt on while filming. Unfortunately Today...with the UTTERLY CONTEMPTIBLE A HYPOCRITICALLY INTOLERANT Left...Ive gotten Venomously nasty comments about my Reagan Shirt. Comments which I've given their due responses and then removed shortly thereafter. VINCE Says Thank you!!!
Without knowing You or the context of your comment I'll take this as a Positive Comment ...you know like how some said Einstein was close to being "Crazy".....
Awesome Jim
Hey Rob....Appreciate that !! Glad your out there watching. I'll be posting a standard detailed video Later today !! Stay TOONED!! 😀

Hi Jim really love your content I’m in Perth Western Australia 🇦🇺 I grow a lot of coleus here in my garden , I’m always keen to learn more
LOVE the T shirt! And thanks for the plant advice. I love my Coleus’s
Hey DebyBarber...Thanks....I hope my channel gives you good pointers making your Coleus even better!! I stay off Politics on my Channel but have a bunch of Reagan shirts because I admired the Man.... Even more today with the attacks on Trump and the LUNACY of the Left. I actually had a viewer state that when she saw my Shirt she turned off my video.
Of course that deserves a rebuttal....I THANKED Her for not watching....and asked please If She or any of her friends SUBSCRIBE to my channel and chose to be Nasty like that to UNSUBSCRIBE.
I noticed too much plants at same pot!! Is that ok!!? Does that make crowd for the roots to grow??!!
Once in a big pot ...the more the merrier!!
You water how many days interval? Because my coleus always become rootrot.
A înflorit și crescut superb toată vara

If you want to save seeds from the plant...is it best to not trim it?thanks
Hi Nelda.... My Coleus collection consist mainly of KONG, JITTERS, FINGERPAINT, PAINTED NETTLE, DEFIANCE, and BLACK STOCKINGS. My personal favorite is the Kong!!!
It sounds kinda like retiring and giving the youngsters and new comers a chance:)

Do you prefer sun or shade for coleus sir?
Based on my years of experience....the ideal location for a healthy full Coleus is a place which gets A mixture of both....next to a tree or bushes where either the Coleus gets filtered sunlight or direct Sun in morning or late afternoon. You can grow coleus in direct sun...but be prepared for more watering.
Jim's Wholiest of Coleus
My coleus gets direct sun from 7am to mid day, watering schedule always at 4 or 5pm. few of them are starting to fade in color. Do you think its because the direct sun?
Hello Ponty....its a possibility.....the only way to know for sure is experimentation.....Try moving the planter to a place which gets a bit less Sun. I have experimented and found that it was the case.
Jim's Wholiest of Coleus
Thank you sir..
Are all coleus plants medicinal?
I'm no expert in Coleus medicinal purposes....I do know there are only a very small select few on the darkest leaf varieties that can be used as a Tea...but I've never had it. Thank you. Of course Plants and Medicine are hand in hand...just havent researched the medicinal.
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus thanks for the reply, I've been researching forskolin and came across this plant as the source. If you find out more, your sharing about it is appreciated.
