  • "In the 'Brandenburg' concertos there's a certain equality between the strings, brass, winds. Everyone has a very important role to play". Musicians from the Netherlands Bach Society talk about the Brandenburg concertos, which they performed for All of Bach.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on September 26th 2018 at Muziekcentrum van de Omroep, Hilversum, The Netherlands. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

I love entire Bach’s opus and it’s hard for me to single out his “best” work, but I always come back to the Brandenburg concerts and when I hear Allegro of the fourth concert my heart leaps of happiness and gratitude for the oportunity to enjoy the greatest of all composers, the beloved Johann Sebastian Bach 🎶🥰🎵💖

@@rickmiller4860 I agree with your choice, cheerful violin and flute playing and bravura harpsichord section, another beautiful Bach’s “Allegro” 🙂

That's what I love so much about the Brandenburgs.
Every single instrument/performer gets a moment of glory in the spotlight.
They are all equally involved and important.

As non-specialist I hear only one big nice sound, then finding out what many thoughts went into it, is very interesting. As Sato says, it’s like opening up the clock and looking inside. I love these interview videos. Thanks!

The Brandenburg Concertos are my least favourite pieces of Bach,
not because I don't understand that they are great but because, in most performances,
they come across as one thick, wall of sound; a thick forest of unidentifiable trees.

@@mlsarchitect Try the Goldberg-Variations, The Art of Fugue, the Musical Offering (all instrumental) or the Mass in b-Minor (vocal) instead: Masterpieces from Bach´s last decade and together constituting his musical testament, sufficing for (more than) a lifetime ...

I understand that J. S. Bach is the greatest musician and composer that ever lived.
The Brandenburg Concertos are a anomaly for me.
Perhaps he was sick that week.

@@mlsarchitect Especially in his later life, JSB sublimated many art forms (that by then were out of fashion) to unprecedented levels, to an extent that made it virtually senseless for others to add anything to it since after JSB, all that could be said and done had already been said and done. Instead, composers started to concentrate on and develop new forms, such as that of opera, sonata, string quartet and symphony, including his own sons. To understand the Brandenburg Concertos, one needs to know the concept of the Concerto Grosso: also this form was sublimated by JSB and to the present day, they remain the most popular of their kind and among the most popular pieces of baroque orchestral music at all. With them, JSB showed not only his mastery of form and style but also of instrumentation, centuries ahead of great admirers such as Berlioz, Rimsky-Korsakov and Ravel. The sheer colorfulness and variety of instrumentation and mood from one concerto to another build together a musical universe that is both unprecedented and unrepeatable. I remember that when I was a young kid, our family used to listen not only to the Brandenburg Concertos as such, but also to records with the most famous Andersen and Grimm fairytales, featuring the Concertos as introductory and background music in a very well-chosen and tasteful manner: ever since then I associate this heavenly music with a magical world in which all is possible and Good has the final word over Evil. Try to listen to the Brandenburg Concertos while reading classical fairytales and you will be amazed how well they harmonize ...

I very much appreciate your input.
Perhaps I'll try your suggestion out but I'm skeptical.
Maybe it's a matter of taste -- my favorite Bach experiences are more like listening to the solo Cello suites and sonatas with absolutely no distractions.
It's amazing what tours they can take your mind away on.

@3:46 I think I understand different from what I read in the written text. I seem to hear the player saying "but really what you HAVEN'T to do is blending"... and this would make perfect sense to me in that I think the desired effect is not to smooth the general result, but that all lines/parts run with each own "personality". They are meant as "solos".

No. 1 is particularly challenging due to the variety of instruments (and the only one with 4 instead of 3 parts) so it is left for the end I suppose ... Especially the natural horns are tricky, hard to find instrumentalists who are able to play those instruments in a non-hair-raising way ...
