I appreciate your view on Uphams character. A lot of reactors I’ve seen come down hard on him after that particular scene and I understand why but it’s like you said ‘You can be the toughest person on the street but when it comes to war it’s a different matter’ so true.

At 22:22 you wondered why the US troops at the bridge have no tanks...but remember that Ryan and his unit are Paratroopers...the guys that got dropped by parachute behind the enemy lines, so they would not have any tanks. And Captain Miller is specifically only given a small squad because they are expecting to have to go behind enemy lines to find Ryan, so no tanks going along with them either.
Wade as the medic knew that more Morphine would lower his blood pressure and kill him, but he also knew he was hit in the liver and would bleed out in minutes.
this what i came here to say. those morphine shots are about the max allowed for a a full grown man and more would kill him.
They went to save him because all siblings of a family enlisted and only one was left, so it was in order to save that family’s bloodline. Only children with no siblings aren’t subject to a draft because they are the only ones of their bloodline. I myself am an only child but I joined up voluntarily. It’s easy to miss but the reason they split the brothers up is because of the real life story of the 5 Sullivan brothers, who all died on the same ship durning the battle of the Solomon Islands I believe. I was stationed on the ship named in their honor, USS The Sullivans.

One thing in this movie that astounds me is the Woman in the office with the letters home to family is she caught the home address of the Ryan’s, she was doing her job to the highest respect under the most terrible circumstances, 👍
Many people don't realize that not all the death notices were delivered by the military, young Telegraph boys delivered quiet a lot of them and would endure the sadness of the families.
Steven Spielberg chose Matt Damon to play Ryan because he wanted a "new" face that people didn't yet know, but the plan "blew up" with the worldwide success (and the Oscars) of "Good Will Hunting".
It is good to see part 2 posted so soon. For another great Spielberg war film that does not have nearly as many reactions posted, you folks should check out Empire of the Sun...starring a very young Christian Bale.

The U.S. government started caring about making sure that no family ended up decimated by war, after the sinking of the light cruiser, USS Juneau, on 13 Nov 1942. my grandpa (RIP) was a young teen in Philippines when WW2 broke out. he used to tell me stories about the war. one of the most memorable one he told me was that after a firefight, you would hear the dying Japanese/Americans crying out for their mom. they would hear them while they hid in their house at night.

You mentioned Tiger Tanks. The Tiger in Fury, is a real one, and the only running tiger left. And one of about 7 or 8 left in the world. It's Tiger 131, housed in Bovington, England.

No one ever knows exactly how they'll respond when you have to kill in the name orders someone else that you don't know who is also following orders. This truly was the GREATEST generation ever in American history, and we today owe each and every single one of them our love and thanks. God Bless our America, and God Bless our Military. Holding that bridge was extremely important. And even though they technically didn't hold it themselves, they slowed the Germans enough that they didn't hold it when reinforcement arrived. Stopping the entire Tank division from crossing the river. Sort of like the Alamo where we Texans died to the last man but bought Sam Houston enough time to defeat Santa Anna
I was in the Army for 20yrs. One reason they were tasked to save Pvt Ryan was to continue the family Bloodline.

The German who stabbed Fish while Upham was breaking down in the stairwell, was the German that they wanted to kill when Wade died. The German let Upham live because Upham gave him water, a smoke, and argued with the rest to spare the German’s life after Wade died. Upham shoots him when he’s surrendering at the end, to show that the brutality of warfare has caused Upham to lose his innocence by not only killing, but by killing a surrendering prisoner.
The soldier that stabbed Melish is not the same as Steamboat Willie...who is the soldier they let go after Wade was killed. You can find separate listings for the characters and the actors on IMDB, you can find the one for "SS soldier" far down the cast list towards the bottom. Also the man who killed Melish was SS, and Steamboat Willie was regular Wehrmacht.

These “X-shaped things” on Omaha Beach are called "Czech Hedgehogs" they were used to prevent tanks and other land vehicles from moving up from the beaches. They were also very useful in catching landing craft and potentially shredding them. This is why the Allies preferred landing at low tide, to expose these beach obstacles. Some had explosive charges placed atop them. After WW II, it was found that 30% of American combat troops, never fired their weapons during battles. Causes are varied, fear, religious beliefs, shell shock, etc. So people shouldn't be so hard on Upham, he wasn't a combat trained solder. He was a translator and map reader.

Spielberg researched small details, for instance, Pvt Jackson's right thumb has a black mark on it. That's actually a bruise that many U. S. riflemen had caused from getting their thumb caught in the loading mechanism from not locking the bolt back properly when loading/reloading the M1 Garand rifle. It was called "Garand thumb".
The Hitler Youth Knife is more literary liberty than fact. That knife is a hiking knife given to members of the Hitler Youth Corps, which was much like the Boy Scouts in training while being indoctrinated with the ideology of National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi). The only other group they were issued to were members of the SA. This knife was never part of a soldier of the Wehrmacht. As for the reaction of Carparzo and Mellish, it is highly unlikely an average G.I. would have known what that knife was and its symbolism. The matter of Mellish crying is also not likely as the Allies didn't find out about the fate of Jews in Europe until the first concentration camp was liberated April 4, 1945. The war in Europe ended May 7, 1945. So, following the real timeline, Mellish dies before the Allies knew anything about concentration and death camps. But, after-all, it is Hollywood.
Saving Private Ryan is not based on the Sullivan brothers. Fritz Niland became the basis for Private Ryan. He was dropped behind enemy lines on D-Day and spent five days in the French countryside, eventually earning a Bronze star in combat for taking a French. Robert Rodat first came up with the plot in 1994 when he saw a monument in a cemetery in Tonawanda, New York. The monument was to the Niland Brothers - 4 young American men who fought in the Second World War. When three of the Nilands were reported killed, the surviving brother - Fritz - was sent home. This inspired Rodat to write his movie. The average age of a U. S. troops armed forces personnel during WW II was 26 years old. Selective Service draft age range was 18 years of age to 45 years. The average age in Vietnam War was 22, not 19 as any think.
There are 26 military cemeteries across Normandy, but the most famous and visited site is the poignant Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer. The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France is located in Colleville-sur-Mer, on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery, established by the U.S. First Army on June 8, 1944 as the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II. The cemetery site, at the north end of its half mile access road, covers 172.5 acres and contains the graves of 9,387 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations. In real life with the Nilands, it actually turned out later that another of the brothers was alive - he’d been held captive in a Burmese POW camp. Attempts to point out the "discrepancies" between the stories of Fritz Niland and James Ryan are often misguided, as Ryan is only based on Niland, and is not meant to be (or claimed to be) a completely accurate representation of him. The differences in the two stories seem to stem in part from the fact that the true story of Sergeant Niland and his brothers is often reported inaccurately. The character of Private James Ryan is a mixture of fact and fiction, with some of the fictional elements coming from the erroneous stories about the Niland brothers.
The German credited as "Steamboat Willie" who was released by Capt. Miller is not the German who engaged and killed Pvt Stanley "Fish Mellish during hand-to-hand combat. "Steamboat Willie" was in the Heer (Army) of the Wehrmacht and the other was in the Waffen SS which was a paramilitary organization and not part of the Wehrmacht. Originally, the SS uniform differed from the Wehrmacht uniform-whereas the regular army wore field grey, the SS wore black, head to toe (although later the SS did adopt field grey and often wore camouflage pattern uniform. American troops were brown and they didn't wear jackboots. The lightning bolt SS insignia can be seen on the right collar lapel of the German as he passes Upham and reaches the bottom of the staircase. During the Battle at Ramelle, Upham became shell shocked and was unable to save a .30 cal team from a German soldier because he was too frozen with fear to do anything about it. He carried all the .30 caliber ammo at the battle of Ramelle, but was unable to do his job because he was always either pinned down or too afraid to move. He signified the loss of innocence in war and thought that soldiers could be civil, but he later succumbed to the evils of war and made up for his cowardice when he shot Steamboat Willie for killing Miller even after the latter had shown Willie mercy earlier.
Not only did Upham represent the loss of innocence of war but he also symbolized the "Every-man". His illusion of neutrality faded when he finally had to pick and side and kill Steamboat Willie, his character revelation being how he finally understood the horrors of war. It became clear that Upham had turned into a hardened and true soldier because of the whole experience. Upham's rank was Tech 5 Corporal (E-5), that meant he was technician in a specialty area. His was maps and translator, he was not a combat infantryman and was never trained for front-line duty. Gunnery Sergent Hartman explained it this way in the movie Full Metal Jacket: "It is your killer instinct which must be harnessed if you expect to survive in combat. Your rifle is only a tool. It is a hard heart that kills. If your killer instincts are not clean and strong you will hesitate at the moment of truth. You will not kill.
"The way the next of kin was notified of their loved one was killed in action during WW II was by Western Union telegram delivered by a bicycle riding messenger. If you were being notified of multiple deaths as was the case in this film, notification was done in-person by a military officer, usually from the same branch of service as the deceased when possible. That's why the mother upon seeing the officer exit the car momentarily froze knowing that meant at least 2 of her boys were either KIA or MIA, as the priest exits the car, she staggers and completely collapsed. Unfortunately, you didn't include that in your video presentation. That is one of the most important scenes in the movie. The mother speaks no lines in the movie, yet her breakdown brought a flood of tears form movie goers in theaters across the nation. Another important scene is it is clear from the few lines Ryan's wife speaks that she has never heard the name of Capt. John Miller, this means John has never spoken to her about what happened that day in Ramelle. What many missed is listening to Ryan speaking at the Miller's grave of how he thought about what those 8 men did for him every day was not guilt, but commitment.
There are units assigned to recover, bury and mark graves. Usually these were temporary battlefield cemeteries. As hostilities moved farther away, a more permanent site would be selected, at the family's request, whenever possible, the remains would be returned to the United States. At the Normandy Cemetery Visitors Center, you'll find the following inscription: IF EVER PROOF WERE NEEDED THAT WE FOUGHT FOR A CAUSE AND NOT FOR CONQUEST, IT COULD BE FOUND IN THESE CEMETERIES. When you capture a pov or they surrender, you're not allowed to kill them. It's a war crime. You also have to know that not all German soldiers in WW2 were nazis. The higher ups and the SS(Hitler's personal bodyguard unit) definately were, but many normal German soldiers weren't. Plenty of them were forced to fight and didn't support Hitler. What the German soldier did wasn't personal. He was just doing what he was supposed to do as a soldier unfortunately.

There were at least 2 real-life cases - the Sullavan and the Niland brothers - where the brothers in a family died, so some rules were changed during WW2 that they couldn’t all be assigned to the same naval ship, etc to prevent the entire family being wiped out, and there is the historical case mentioned in this film when Pres Lincoln acknowledged the loss of the brothers in a letter to the mother (altho this case has some inaccuracies.) But the rules were eventually changed back. So there is some history, some fiction blended together to make a powerful dramatic story. Also, the story is kind of symbolic, because all soldiers are sacrificing themselves for a cause, and they try to save others.

A ship mate of mine an only child tried to get out of going to Nam,then later volunteered to go, Navy said the people of Vietnam were suffering enough they didn't want him to add to their plight.
7:21, Earlier Upham talked about writing a book describing the bonds of brotherhood that form in war. Unfortunately he hasn't been with these guys long enough to see them as friends and brothers. Had he been with Miller's team a couple of weeks or so, Upham might have been the one trying to shoot the German soldier.
It's that lack of brotherhood and cowardice that keeps him from helping Mellish later on.

4:37, Captain Miller's heart was in the right place and they should have taken out this spot so another group of Allied troops don't get ambushed. But he definitely needed more guys for this to come off cleaner.
Fun fact in the miniseries Band of Brothers there is a similar attack on a German artillery position like this. The real world attack took place in a spot called Brécourt Manor. A 12 man team from the 101st Airborne (aka the Screaming Eagles) went in and destroyed the German forces. The Screaming Eagles were greatly outnumbered but they won the battle. To this day the assault is considered a textbook example of small unit tactics.
Minor correction...in real life, Miller would be on a special mission from the Chief of Staff of the US Army, so part of his orders would have been to avoid any combat that was not necessary to the success of his assigned mission. If Miller had survived and Ryan had not, Miller would have been court martialed for violating his orders.👍

@@technofilejr3401 Well...as far as who was in command of the US Army, there was FDR first, then Marshall 2nd...and it was Marshall that assigned the mission in the story of the movie...so Miller was given a highest priority task from a National Command Authority...as I understand it, those missions ALWAYS prohibit all side quests...if it is not needed for your assigned task you do not do it.

They didn't just stay to help Ryan because it may allow them to save him and get out of fighting more in the war. The bridge was very important in controlling movement in the war and winning the war is more important than anything.

This is loosely based on real events because like when there's a draft if you're the only male descendant you'll get a pass the first few round or if all your brothers are killed they'll allow you to return him. Beyond that you know they will do everything in their power to rescue you if you are captured or killed or stuck behind enemy lines even costing lives to retrieve you or your body
D-Day was the most important day of the 20th century.
It was the beginning of the liberation of Europe from the Nazis, and for the Nazis it was the beginning of the end.
18, 19 year old kids stepped forward to try to liberate people they had never met.
I will never know such bravery, or sacrifice.
They not only saved a continent, but the MILLIONS yet unborn, whose parents from all over the world wouldve been murdered.
We stand on the shoulders of giants.
We can never repay those men, for what they did for us.

Upham never learns anything. The first thing he does after shooting the first "guy" that he talked Miller into letting go is to let five more "guys" go.
You guys have to see Full Metal Jacket which is another war movie. That movie starts off very strong like this one.
One comment repeated a lot, when the movie was released,was about the ending.
"Wrong guy at the cemetery!" Many people thought Upham should have been the one . I know he was only a clerk, but his actions (and inactions) doomed others lives. He would have reached his later years still haunted by the consequences.
They're referred to as the "Greatest Generation".......and for good reason.

Captain Miller new the names of every man he ordered to their death. Try and imagine the emotional toll of ordering 100 of your friends and family members to their death. All this on top of fierce combat. The man has PTSD. The movie is correct John H. Miller died on June 13th 1944 defending the Remagin Bridge

36:00 No Upham didn't redeem himself. He shot the only man who could identify him as a coward who caused the death of his own soldiers by his own inaction. I would predict that five years after, Upham dies by suicide.

Nah the guy with the knife has a thick Bavarian accent, but the guy Upham kills IS the same guy who they released blindfolded earlier under the radar station. My opinion, one of the flaws of this movie is to have the two guys appear so similar.
he killed the former prisoner that tricked them before and rejoined the army. its not that the "prisoner" was in the wrong, as for all we know he could have been rejoined with german troops by sheer coincidence and was again forced(under penalty of desertion for which there was death) to fight against them. its not like he shot him because there was a reason, he shot him out of revenge(same way others wanted to do it the first time prisoner was "captured"). it just shows that even the most goodwilled people can change in the war and anyone can be forced against his will to do things hes not proud of.

Yes we all are mad at “upum” but no I’m sorry I find it hard to believe anyone in that moment would not rush to aid especially knowing someone could just walk up and shoot you from behind even from an illogical preserve yourself it makes no sense. It is however a great depiction of a coward which is certainly common at least in movies
its not cowardice, its fear. coward would not even run through that field to that building at all. he went there with intention of helping, but realized he is too late and that 's* already hit the fan' and fear of possible death took over and paralyzed his actions. anyone who thinks that character is supposed to depict a coward doesnt really get how wars play out, in my opinion.

Just so there's no confusion, the German that Upham shot is the same guy he helped when held as a POW and was the same guy who stabbed Private Mellish in the chest. When the German was coming down the stairs and saw Upham, the German wasn't familiar to the audience but was the same guy. --In August 2022, I was in France and visited Omaha Beach and the Normandy American Cemetery. There were people there from all over the world. Anyone who travels to France should consider going on the all day tour or Normandy. We should all be grateful to the greatest generation who made it possible for us to maintain our freedom and way of life. God Bless them all.
It is 2 different characters...one is listed in credits as Steamboat Willie...that is the guy they let go after Wade died and the same one that Upham shoots at the end. The one that killed Melish and walked down the stairs past Upham is listed in the credits on IMDB as "Waffen SS soldier." The two are played by different actors, and you can clearly see in still frame images that the two are not the same.

This is my theory. You said Reiben and typewriter guy survived which they prod did. But this is my take…. Everyone who gets the letter is killed. It was Caparzo’s and he was killed. The medic took it, he was killed. Captain miller took the letter from the medic, he was killed. At the end Reiben took the letter from capt miller which leads me to think he will be killed

@@kristymcdowell6185 I hear you and I understand that you are just spinning theories but my theory is that everybody but Reiben and Upham died whether they had the letter or not so I'm not convinced that there was some magic voodo death curse on the letter and since it's all just speculation anyways I as a viewer assume that Reiben sent the letter to Caparzo's dad and then went on to invade Germany, received many medals for valor and then finally died of cancer at the age of 73 years old.
This is loosely based on a few different stories. The premise of the Ryan Brothers is based on the Sullivan Brothers, a group of 5 brothers were stationed on the same ship and all five went down when it was torpedoed, ever since then the Army made it policy to split up siblings at different post so that it wouldn't happen again. I may be off with the exact circumstances of the Sullivan story but it did happen along those lines. Terrible for their family at home i bet
Main story of Ryan is the story of the 4 Niland Brothers...though the Nilands/Ryans were split up after the Sullivans were killed, so there is that part of them in the story.
I like it either or when it comes to only one of yall seen a movie and the other not, or yall both haven't. Its entertaining nonetheless for me

I Really Like Your View on Uphams Character. I seen alot reactions being so hard on him and Yes it is realistic how he had a mental breakdown and we know what fight flight or freeze mode is. Heres the things I notice and know about the things also said because his very unfit for Combat. after losing Wade When Upham first he told miller this is not right then Gave Jackson Water and snatch it of him which I dont like that he was only trying to help. Also Finally Mellish Teaching Upham what Fubar means isn't not going to help when he is in a first huge battle and Putting Ammo around his Makes Him More and More Confused
When WW II ended, it was found that a large percentage of troops in actual combat, never fired their weapon. Reasons ranged from actual fear of killing a human to just plain being frozen with fear.

What are you talking about? War is by its very nature - wild. - plus they don't seem to take it seriously anyway - just another movie. Almost no knowledge of one of the deadliest wars in human history - with over 75 million people killed and fought across three Continents - sad.
