Its so funny when we think about how much time we spent fast forwarding through commercials, or complaining every time we saw them back in the day, and now they invoke such wonderful nostalgia. It really does feel like being a kid again watching these.

agreed, I hated Commercials as a kid when watching cartoons. Now I get mad at people when they upload Saturday morning cartoon tapes and edited out the commercials :P I have a huge playlist of Xmas, Halloween, thanksgiving "etc" and retro food commercials. I can sit and watch them for hours lol

I can still hear my dad in my mind to this day complaining to my mom about all the !@#$ing commercials and yet loved the Christmas or Halloween ones they're both long gone now but I swear I can still sense them especially when I pretend I'm back in the 20th century and their just in the next room watching and complaining about these commercials and someday i'll pass through that door sit down with them pass the snacks and stay forever :)

The messages behind these commercials was always about families and love. That cute McDonald’s one with the little girl even encouraged kids not to run away. Sure it’s advertising for a product but the messages were always positive. The 80s were especially nostalgic for me and I remember a lot of these commercials.

That's nostalgia blinders talking bud. No reason whatsoever why you can't still feel the warmth and magic of Christmas these days, with friends and family. That kind of stuff comes from within. And honestly, the whole "things were so much better back then" cliche is beyond tired. It's fun to look back, but don't let it keep you from making memories and enjoying the present.

I want to go back and do it all over ....First of all! The commercials were really wholesome and meaningful as you can see from this post. The 70’s and 80’s were my decades and they were the best years of my life. America was absolutely a different place back then. It was still a treat then to get 30 cents from mom and walk uptown to the gas station to get a Coca-Cola or Pepsi or to the ice cream shop and get a CMP ice cream. We truly did not lock our doors and stayed out till after dark with our bikes and on Halloween we all went trick-or-treating without our parents at night in the cold and it was great fun.. In the summer we played outside all day and all night, The only way my mom got us home to eat was a big brass bell she had outside the sliding glass doors that she would ring to get out attention to come home for dinner. I remember wonderful 4th of July celebrations when mom took us to the ball park and we laid on blankets to watch the fireworks. And of course Christmas and even though it was tuff for my mom raising us she always made sure we had a great holiday . Even Easter was special in America back then... as we get older we started to go see the movies and we really did have the best movies. ( Jaws, Close Encounters, , Raiders of the lost Ark, James bond, Star Wars, Star Trek, Aliens, Predator, planet of the apes, E.T, The terminator, The goonies, Friday the 13th, Batman, Back to the future . ...To name a few.....The TV show line up on the networks were fabulous ( this was before you get 500 channels like you do today and still nothing on is good) we had Dallas, knots Landing, Falcon crest. And every night of the week a network would compete and have for example, Monday night at the movies! Tuesday night at the movies ! and they would show a major movie release. we had real holidays were we all got together and enjoyed each other’s company. We had great stores that are all but gone now in 2020 and great movie theaters and of course the MALLS! It was not the 80’s without a Mall. My very first few jobs were at the mall. First Macdonald’s and then The Gap!. Yes sir those days were GREAT! and I am very lucky to have lived them .... today I don’t even see kids outside and everyone is in fear for saftey from crazy people.... God Bless is all ! (If you can even say that anymore)

I also prefer the Christmas tree decorations of those years, especially the 80s when a lot of people including my family used those big colorful tree light bulbs as opposed to the smaller ones or the boring all gold lights. I was born in 1952 and grew up before commercials became so prevelant on t v . our " commercials " came in the form of print media . newspapers that never ran color all year were running full four color eight page inserts and full page ads for Christmas specials . Sears and J C Penny's sent out their full color 6 inch thick catalogs that were so full of eye candy a kid would drool over it . no joke ! We waited all year for those catalogs . many a kid got their toys through Sears mail order especially in the more rural and farming areas . I know we did what few toys we did get .our things were more utilitarian like a good pair of gloves for our hands and a new pair of rubber boots for helping out feeding the cattle .

Those ads were doing exactly what all ads do. They were selling crap. Exactly like ads now. And people grinched and spit about it and said the ads weren't as good as they were in the 40s and 50s. If you'd been paying attention you'd've seen it.
Look, I like watching ads from my youth, too. It brings back happy memories and reminds me of a world now long gone, and especially, how simple everything was to a kid. But don't confuse your innocence with any alleged innocence of the world at that time. The 70s and 80s were the golden era of drugs and rock'n'roll and sex and plunging living standards and backroom political deals and pointless wars.
You don't see any of that in the ads because they were selling stuff, not making a documentary. Today's ads show us a world that's just as perfect, and kids today will one day comment on RUclips that they prove the world of the 20s was much better, "unlike now".

Yeh. Commercials sure bring back memories. You had to watch them. You couldn’t fast forward to avoid them. If you were born before the 80’s, watching tv was a big thing. Families all sat down to watch the 15 or so channels you got on your box tv, or console tv. Weekend tv were completely different. Solely dedicated to sports and westerns. *sigh* I miss the easiness the 70’s brought me. The internet has ruined our society. Communications and humans desire to be kind is gone.

Pizza for $2.99 each. 😳 Wow inflation screwed us big time. I also remembered when being a pizza guy actually paid livable wages despite how cheap pizzas were in comparison to now. I knew one young man who had his own apartment and was able to save up to get his own house. This was early 1990s. He would volunteer at local schools as a tutor (I was in fourth or fifth grade). Boy, times have changed for the worse. Especially economically. 😔😓
