(31 mins) Signature Attraction - A documentary about why rollercoasters exist

  • Signature Attraction is a documentary that asks the question: Why do rollercoasters exist?
    Why have coasters become such enduring icons of popular culture, why have they entered our vernacular (think of the last time you heard something described as a ‘rollercoaster journey’), and what does our ongoing international love affair with these short rides to (seemingly) nowhere tell us about ourselves? These questions are being asked by Malcolm Burt, an experienced film and television producer who is embarking on an international documentary research project in an effort to find the answer.

    Very interesting. Roller coasters can definitely bring a feeling of nostalgia. However, I have never thought of roller coasters as a kid thing. There is no reason a 40, 50, 60 + person should not get on a roller coaster!

    Loved your doco. Beautifully filmed. Like all coaster enthusiasts, the sight of a section of track from a roller coaster gets my heart racing. I'll never forget in the late 80s or maybe 1990, Maggie T's daughter did a 1 off TV special on roller coasters in the USA. I was hooked! I watched it over & over, soaking in every minute. My 1st overseas trip was to the USA - all planned around roller coasters. It's an experience I'll never forget. Thank you for sharing your passion with us. I'm a little older then you & I'll never lose my passion for roller coasters. The adrenaline rush - I'm addicted!

    • @MalcolmBurt
      @MalcolmBurt  8 лет назад

      +eclipsey999 That's the spirit! And don't ever lose your passion :) That TV special sounds quite random...but awesome!

    • @eclipsey999
      @eclipsey999 8 лет назад

      +Malcolm Burt it was very random. She rated her top coaster as The Beast @ Kings Island. It was before the days of hypercoasters, giga coasters & strata coasters. By the time I went over there Magnum XL 200 had been built @ Cedar Point. I went to both parks. My travel agent messed up my accommodation near Cedar Point so when I went I only had time to queue up 1.25 hrs to go on Magnum XL 200 once then return to Cleveland. It was the only ride I went on at that park! Never been back unfortunately.

    • @MalcolmBurt
      @MalcolmBurt  8 лет назад

      +eclipsey999 I can see why The Beast got the top gong - riding it at night changed my life (no kidding) - and I feel ill reading your story about the messed up accommodation. Imagine getting so close...and having that happen. Make a plan to go back maybe?

    • @eclipsey999

      +Malcolm Burt I've wanted to go back ever since but life got in the way! Now the $AUD has fallen again I just can't justify the cost. Maybe if it goes back above 75c in the next few years I'll go again. Until then I live for videos like yours on RUclips!!!!

    Sooo great. Congrats for making this doc. I'm brazilian and i love rollercoasters since i was 6 years old. I went to California ,last year, to finally know Six Flags Magic Mountain. I had been dreaming of going there since i was 9.(i'm 30). It was perfect. Watching your bright eyes at the end of the documentary reminded me of the feeling i got when i was there at SFMM( 5x in a week). Really amazing and bizarre to find other people that same THING i have about rollercoasters.
    Now i'm planning my trip to Ohio! #CedarPoint2017

    Malcom, thank you very much for this wonderful and touching documentary! As someone who works in a very similar field and sometimes even on developping rollercoaster settings, I really watched it with enthusiasm and understanding. Like a lot of the interviewed people, I think the magic about the need for rollercoasters in our society lies in the point that they make us feel alive, they make us aware of the heart and the energy that are beating in our body. But I also reckon that there are differences in why adults enjoy riding a coaster. For some it's "just" become a child for a moment or two and/or flirt with death for a second (which was truely mentioned by you in the documentary). For some it's more - and here's the connection to my main professional field as a show set designer. We who create these worlds of joy, distraction and entertainment in whatever way (theme parks, amusement parks, films, stage shows...) know like little people else how important it is to lead our visitors into moments of katharsis. Especially in our (also truely spoken: Western) world that extremely focuses on rationality, on acting as an adult as early as you can. We help people getting into these moments that they need, consciously or unconsciously and for whatever reason. And that's why they love coming back again and again, no matter how old they are. I even think that our need for katharsis grows with the years.
    Visiting themed areas in a park, riding a coaster in an amusement park, going to the movies or watching a musical - it's all about escaping our ordinary life, feeling alive, discovering worlds that we normally are not able to visit and in the end, it's about feeling a moment of katharsis - which might be even bigger when we share it with our loved ones who are standing next to us. HOW we create these moments - that's our professional secrecy :-)
    Still, one question came up while watching your documentary: Did you also examined if people feel kind of a saturation when they ride one coaster several times in a row, or is it just the same thrill for them as during the first time?

    • @MalcolmBurt
      @MalcolmBurt  6 лет назад +1

      Hello there - thank you very much for watching, and for your kind comments! You have made some excellent observations here. And in regards to your question: I didn't ask people directly if they feel the same thrill each time they ride, but a colleague of mine (Prof Dana Anderson from the film actually) reflected that every time we go on a rollercoaster or ride that we have been on before, it's a different ride...not because the ride has changed, but because we have. It makes sense if you only visit a park once every year (or even less) and I thought it was an excellent point too!

      Malcolm Burt i've been becoming interested on roller coasters documentaries since 2007 when I worked at six flags. I don't remember very well but my mother told me that when I was a little i always was interested on trains, she didnt know and me neither, those trains were roller coasters... I have been watching many documentaries but some things i couldnt find anywhere like, hw they use the wheels, hw big can be the wheels, hw is the maitenance, anyways, i have so many questions, when i rode my very first coaster (nitro at 6 flags) i felt like i was born for that moment lol it sounds weird i know...

    Hi Malcolm. I am wondering if you investigated any other emotional/physical journey associated with riding rollercoasters apart from fear and thrill taking? I believe the neurotyical experience of roller coasting is probably vastly different to the neurodiverse experience of roller-coasting and I am wondering if you investigated this or happened upon it during your research?

    • @MalcolmBurt
      @MalcolmBurt  8 лет назад +1

      +Kimberley Sakzewski G'day Kim! I only touched briefly on what you mentioned (if I got it right) as I was fairly locked down to just answering the research question 'Why do rollercoasters exist'? What's clear though, is that there is a lot more going on than the first glance would suggest...

    • @kimsak6929
      @kimsak6929 8 лет назад

      +Malcolm Burt i agree - I look at my son's reactions to riding a roller coaster and I believe its an experience along the lines of proprioception. I don't think there's much operating on the emotional level at all as the sensory input is dealt with differently in him. Its certainly a buzz for him but one mired in a more physical realm. its part of the appeal of humans to the altered state.
