Beautiful playing. I am going to use my reaction to comment on what I like about Lozakovich's style. I hope it does not change with age. I particularly admired how all the energy and concentration went into the playing. Too often, we see hyper-emoting, writhing-about and gnashing of teeth, contorted facial expressions, and heaven-ward eye rolls. If it is, in fact, uncontrollable or sincere, I have no problem. It's just that in my day, Heifetz, and all his contemporaries were motionless except for fingers and bow. Which raises the question-am I totally consistent in my reactions? I am not. For example, Itzhak Perlman seems to have involuntary mouth movements which I have never minded. One former classmate of mine, pianist Murray Perahia emotes in a way I think is not affected. I can't rule out that perhaps I am just prejudiced in his favor. I have known him, briefly, I identify with his artistry, and perhaps I can't be objective. But Joshua Bell's St Vitus dance movements just take me out of the music. When I watch the up-and-coming Spanish violinist, Maria Duenas, (whose playing I like) for example, every phrase seems punctuated by gasping for air. Each and every challenging phrase ends with what strikes me as an air of self-congratulation. There--I did that well! I don't think it sells the piece any better. I may have to send Duenas an oxygen mask I am so struck by the pursed lips, and inhalations so loud, they have a decibel-count up there with jet engine take-offs! I even suspect it may prejudice some judges against her, in competitions where she probably should have won. This leads me to conjecture about a non-musical element that could be off-putting. I can't read judges' minds, so I leave it to others to debate this. How difficult it is to be consistent brings me to Maxim Vengerov. He does emote a lot. But somehow I do accept it. Maybe because he just plays so beautifully. Mitsuko Uchida on the other hand was once described as having a 40 minute orgasm by a youtube commenter. Okay, maybe that's disparaging to a great artist,. She is one. So is comparing her facial mugging to sex while playing constitute a cheap shot? Since when do random YT comments get cited as authority? But on rare occasions they may be on to something. The solution to protesting against such possibly gratuitous comments is available. Don't allow comments. But, for me, Uchida's over-the-top facial expressions risk distracting from the music. And, lest I criticize more women doing this, may I comment on Lang Lang. I accept the fact that he is a great virtuoso pianist. But I am tempted to put a post-it over his face, so I can concentrate on his musicianship. Someplace, I don't remember where, I read that Yuja Wang, a more conventional non-emoter does a mean satire of his facial moves. I'd love to see that sometime. I won't give her a complete pass, on another matter, though. I do recognized she is a sartorial attention-getter. She absolutely does push the envelope of fashion in a staid classical music culture. But compared to Hollywood outfits, she's pretty modest. And I think in the end it is her musicianship, extraordinary curiosity about exploring new repertoire, and slow steady evolution in public YT videos that makes me less judgmental. Where else do I hear all 4 Rachmaninoff concerti. I suspect at the rate she gobbles up repertoire she is headed for a 70 concerti repertoire, not the usual 25. Then, specifically about fashion or femininity used for publicity, it is not only in music we see this issue. When primatologist, Jane Goodall was featured on the cover of Time magazine, fellow simian scholars sniffed that it was her gams (legs) that got her there. Thank you legs, she replied. If they got me grants to save chimp lives, so be it. So where is the fine line which I object to? Khatia Buniatiashvilli is also a wonderful pianist. But the hair tosses and seeking attention to what I think can fairly be called flirtatious, feminine wiles, while perhaps fair game to get your name out there, I find at times simply comical. Nobody ever said that about Ida Haendel, or Vladimir Horowitz. In the end, I can't claim to have a definitive theory about what works and what doesn't. In fact, I accept that these opinions are in the end-subjective. And perhaps I am alone in expressing them. I leave it to others to weigh in. Or not. Perhaps the simplest way to put it, we just have old wine in new bottles. In 30 years, maybe the paroxysyms of facial and body movement will fade away, and it will be pure music. I won't be here, alas to celebrate the occasions. And even tie-died jeans are back. So, I guess, a trend is a trend. And by the way, do I play as well as all the players mentioned? Not on your life. Does that prevent me from observing some stuff? You decide. Thank you Daniel Lozakovich, Sergey Smbatyan, and Malta Phil for a sprightly, moving performance. It's a pleasure to see Lozakovich develop into a superb artist. Keep up the great work! All of you. And thank you Malta Phil for posting!
