NSX: The ULTIMATE History of Honda's Supercar (Documentary)

  • The Honda NSX is one of the most important sports cars of all time. It was the first production car to make use of an aluminum frame which was lighter and stiffer than that of the competition. The NSX also made use of VTEC technology. This made it an exceptional performer in both low and high-speed situations. This car's focus on ergonomics and livability set it apart from its contemporaries. Developing the NSX wasn't easy. The road from conception to production was rife with setbacks and roadblocks, but Honda never compromised on their vision. The NSX was a revelation when it was released in 1990 and its impact can still be felt in the automotive industry more than 15 years after its discontinuation.

I was an Acura dealer tech in the late ‘90’s/early 2000’s and was lucky enough to work on a few of these, and I mean VERY FEW! We had to watch videos in the dealership before they came out to know that to do when they came in for service. With the exception of regular service or to replace the rear tires, they were as reliable as an Accord. The engine had a safeguard that would not allow it rev above a certain rpm until it was up to operation temperature to avoid premature wear or damage. It was a quiet, civilized car that could be driven daily but still go play on the twisties or drive cross-country without blinking. Seeing this brings back many fond memories! Thanks!❤

@@Barchetta Joe’s comment is SPOT ON. I purchased a 1996 NSX-T a little over two years ago and with it LITERALLY* being a dream car, I’ve read everything and anything about the NSX including a few books from Japan, and he hit every detail and them some. I didn’t think there was anything new for me to learn, but I did learn a few new facts from this video.
I’m particularly impressed that he got the origin of the “X” in NSX standing for the “unknown variable” as pretty much EVERYONE thinks it stands for “Experimental”. This video is EASILY the best documentary on the NSX, and believe me when I tell you that I’ve seen ALL of them. Bravo!! 👏 👏 👏
      * I literally had dreams about the NSX when it came out. Literally and figuratively…

Great documentary on the NSX. I am a self admitted Honda fanboy and have owned many Hondas. I genuinely believe Honda will go down in history as one of the greatest car companies of all time. This is all without having even mentioned their motorcycles.

You know people always mention the design being too low key…. I love it. I’d buy one now and leave it all stock in terms of body maybe a bigger wing and ofc engine and transmission would need an upgrade but… I really really like it and since I saw it in gran turismo (game) this car for me is iconic.

1:03:59 This is interesting because the 2007 V10 Concept sounds like it could have become a Lexus LFA or Nissan GT-R competitor; especially if it included Acura’s innovative (and new at the time) SH-AWD to stack up against 2006 AWD Quattro V10 Audi R8’s.
1:05:39 I would argue that the C8 Chevorlet Corvette, 2006 Audi R8, and Lotus Evora GT sets out to emulate what the first gen 1990 Acura NSX wanted to do with lighter-weight, lower cost, sports cars that are comfortable.

16:39 i have been told routinely by others that styling is subjective, not objective; however there are rare cars like the 1990 Acura NSX, Lamborghini Countach, and Ferarri F40 that seem objectively beautiful and universally sexy.

49:30 58 thousand dollars in 1991 translates to 126 thousand dollars today.
Imagine that Mitsubishi rolls out a mid-engined sports car that’s as fast as a Z06, as beautiful as a 296GTB, as practical as an R8 and as well-built as a 911 Turbo. And imagine they start selling it for the price of a Z06. People would lose their minds!

I drove my NSX’s for 26 years in London. I would never buy another sports car. It’s not about the fastest speed, the highest torque, the ability to impress the women, it’s about the balance of all parameters that makes you want to drive that car. In my case I just loved driving it. Nothing more, nothing less.

I always wondered what the NSX would've been like had Honda been more "American" with their horsepower output and not so modest. Imagine if they had made a special edition NA market NSX with 350-400 hp, I don't think they would've had _any_ problem selling those.

    • @kenmorimoto9708

I agree, when the NSX was introduced I was a bit disappointed with the hp number , a Nissan z turbo had 300hp for almost 1/2 the price, a turbo engine or a v8 with over 300hp would have been nice and improved its straight line speed.

Gordon Murray, who created the McLaren F1 based on his experience AND brief ownership of an NSX, opined that the bone stock NSX chassis can easily take way more than 400 HP without losing its characteristic sharp handling capabilities. High performance sports cars typically can't take much more than its stock HP without losing that agile handling due to soft chassis. NSX (coupe model, not the -T) was THE exception. He said Honda did it right the first time. Senna had a part in providing feedback which led to further stiffening the chassis by the engineers and Uehara took Senna's advice to heart. Hence is why many NSX owners decided to supercharge their NSX to 500HP and not lose its handling capabilities if they wanted more than stock 290HP. I didn't need all that horsepower so I decided to leave mine stock.

    Cons:
You forgot the say the lines at the end of video: "If you liked this video share and click the notification bell, bla5x. Thanks for Watching." I've around RUclips for the past few years now, since 2007 so I seen Everything. This is the common mistake that RUclipsrs like you didn't simply care about it and it makes me sad everytime they ignore this line. So this is my only complaint so far. I hope you will do it better next time.

We need a new, grassroots release of this car. Hybrid and electric cars are a waist of time. Honda made the Civic CX. In 89. How many mpg did it get again? Low tech and still around 50 miles per gallon. No electric motors, no direct injection, no 7 speed transmission. Just pure and simple. And reliable at that
