Hi Cruising. Happy new year.I'm a fellow liveaboard who has been living on a housebout for over 10 years and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I saw your vid on the waterpump and hope you can help.I suspect I've got an earthing issue on my waterpump which I've recently replaced because I suspected the old one was dying the death.Fitted a new one and it failed to work. Put the old one across batteries -it worked. Bummer. Obvious electrical fault to the pump.Earthing? Any suggestions greatfully received.

Merry Christmas everyone. Not sure what all the complaining in the comments was all about. Dave offers one of the best VLOGS on narrowboating out there. I do like several others, but these are the most informative, and do offer entertainment value. You can really tell his past career has helped to make these interesting. Thanks for a great series.
Having never even been on a boat (apart from an Isle of Wight ferry) we took a hire boat from Worcester, up the Severn, and around Birmingham. Absolute doddle!
In answer to the “good route lock freeish” happy to recommend Clifton Cruisers next Rugby, I used this hire company in the Easter of 2017 and traveled north to the Coventry Canal then right onto the Lock Free Ashby Canal, the re is only one lock you will encounter on your weeks cruise which is the stop lock at the junction of North Oxford and Coventry canals.
I've just watched the last Q&A again for the clue to the hidden video and still can't see it! Gah! How am I ever going to sleep again? Great, great content here btw. No idea how I ended up watching some dude on a narrow boat, but here I am, diligently working through the entire series... And also now watching you convert a panel van! My wife thinks I'm losing the plot....
I see right now that im gonna have to purchase an alarm clock!! I retired in 2008 and since then, ive had no need to worry at what time i did or didnt get projects done and have had no real need for a schedule nor alarm clock. Yet,,,here i am at 1 am in my home, having already watched several of your videos tonight, when id planned to stop some time back!! Im just gonna have to buy a clock and set it so that i turn you off and get to bed at a reasonable time!! HAHA thanks again for another fun presentation,,,,,its always great to see them,,,,regards,,,
Thanks so much for all of your videos. These really have taught me a lot. I think I've watched every one of your videos at this point. lol. Been following you since near the start. Always a joy to see a new video of yours pop up in my feed. It's a dream of mine to win the lotto or just retire someday and roam the canals until I keel over. Cheers from Kalamazoo, MI!
I was hoping to message this, or email, but couldn't find the links, and I don't have social media. Suggestions to issues.... Tunnel Vision: many led strip lights are 12v, I'm speaking of the ones that come in rolls, and are sticky backed. you can stick them along the upper corners, in the front, and in the back, so that strips shine up, and other strips shine to the sides. Add a switch to the light panel near the throttle, and find a extra wire, or run one to the front to power the bow ones. Oil Filter: you should be able to buy a "oil filter relocation kit". This consists of two hoses, a bracket to mount a oil filter (which means you can get a longer filter, which would last longer), and a piece that attaches to the original filter location that adapts it for the hoses. Tank Level: you can get sending unit install kits, to install a automotive fuel level sender, alternatively, get one from a wrecked Lori (for the fuel tank). But new kits may be available from a automotive race shop. I have also seen (on a old Ski-doo snowmobile) a tank cap that has a rubberized cork float on a stick and a simple gauge in the cap. I have seen these in snowmobile parts catalogs, with multiple lengths. So, don't give up hope. I'm glad you did find out about bow thrusters. Rust: there is a product I would suggest trying, but I don't know if they recommend it for marine applications. it's called "POR-15", it's a paint/primer that actually hardens in moisture. the metal can be bent, and even slid over rocks (or so a guy with a rock crawler told me), without damaging the coating. the main coating doesn’t like uv light, but they have topcoats, and a primer to allow other paints to stick. Seals and stops rust.... I thank you for sharing your experience, I hadn't realized the extent the canals were still navacable, nor the continuation of the narrowboats. I've found it deeply interesting, though, I don't think I could keep my travels to such a slow pace for so long, at least not any time soon. Best wishes from the United States.
I recall that your Christmas dinner vlog with friends last year was an absolute joy for me. I was drooling at all the marvelous food being prepared. Will you do a similar gathering this Christmas?
Regarding an easy first cruise on the canal we tried the Kennet and Avon canal, between Bath and Devizes. There’s a couple of aqueducts to go over, easy and very picturesque, some swing bridges which are good fun (as long as you’re not solo) and one lock at Bradford upon Avon if you go that far. I initially expected to get from Bathampton to the Caen flight and back in 4 days but you very quickly learn to slow down and enjoy a different pace of life. We averaged only 1mph after taking into account tea breaks, lunch breaks, photo opportunity breaks etc.
Hi David, as Kiwis we are masters of making do, so prior to entering any tunnel, as well as turning on the headlight, we always turn on all the interior cabin lights. For boats with larger windows this provides light down the full length of the boat, and gives clear sight of the tunnel sides, even for wide tunnels. It may not be as effective on a boat with portholes though. Perhaps when we are next in the UK and on the cut we will have to purchase an LED light like yours to augment the cabin lights. Cheers and thanks for another great VLOG. Grant.
13:25 I've been pondering (dreaming) of this and think that if one is willing to go the broadbeam route then a semi-houseboated smaller skûtsje or lemsteraak retaining it's mast (hinged near the deck so it can to lie horizontally) and leeboards would be able to cross the channel, sail coasts (within reason), inner seas & powerful rivers as well as cruise the placid canals from Shannon to Moscow & Belomorsk to Suez and everything between... & beyond if you're made of stern stuff with a well armed ghurka or two. Imagine navigating from say Borwick east through the Danube and then hang a right down to Aswan!
The Inland Waterways webpage lists navigable rivers and canals not operated by the CRT. No one ever mentions the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads which are a warren of waterways but the CRT map only shows the bits they control.
Well, those 20 mins whizzed past, you make things so interesting. My tea would probably have gone cold anyway. May I take the opportunity of wishing you a very happy Christmas - last year you treated us to roast turkey if you remember. Here in Bavaria, we have roast goose, which I think is much tastier but there we are. Thanks for all the vids and here's to many more (raises imaginary glass of Dom Perignon) :-)
Thanks so much for the info about the RUclips commercials and how the content creator gets some cash. Now we know to watch the commercials. Greetings from Indiana, USA! We can't wait to get over the pond and try a narrowboat.
The weird thing is, about the only people that let the commercials run are when they’re not actually watching, they’re just letting it run while they’re in a different room. You’d think that the primary value to brands is when engaged viewers who are actually there (proved by them hitting skip) are forced to watch those first five seconds of the ad, which they tend to make extra carefully these days.
like the vlog David keep it up and well done. Question about fuel theft. On our boat (West Midlands BCN) we all have the best padlocks you can get on our fuel caps. I would recommend this, or have an additional bracket put on so as a padlock can be added as we have had people trying to get fuel from our tanks when moored and away from the boat . Not other boaters I may add but just people with no respect for anything. One poor chap had to have a new cap and filler installed as they tried to lever the cap out and made a right mess and costly mess because they didn't know the cap unscrewed, just thought you should know why we lock them up around here, it been a few year ago now but we have had no more problems, since fitting the bracket and lock
Watched over 120 your vids (In the past 3 days) I say over cause I watched some outta order now doing playlist. Added few your friends to, "London boat girl" and "Narrowboat Exp" Find this life fascinating. Although TBH for me I would have to prob go wide beam or Dutch barge. Being 6'5" and getting those Swedish genetics from my Mother be afraid my shoulders to wide and always bumping my head. Anyway got a fan from Florida USA. (also added your Van channel) I think you originally popped up my recommended videos since I was looking at people doing "stealth camping" and DIY van mods. Edit: Got off track. Started typing and got off track. What I was going to say is that I would def want a bow thruster.
Greetings from Chillicothe, Ohio, USA! The first capital of Ohio and one time prominent stop on the Ohio and Erie canal. I'm a huge fan of your videos Dave and I'm incredibly jealous of the vast, extremely well maintained canal networks of the UK. Our forefathers in Ohio fairly quickly abandoned and destroyed our canal systems after the arrival of the railroad. Only a portion of the most northern section of our canals are intact and navigable. Count yourself lucky that the people of your country have a sense of heritage and value such things. Have a merry Christmas and a very happy new year, I'll be looking forward to your videos. Cheers!
It very nearly wasn't saved - the canals had largely fallen into disrepair and disuse by the 1950s and it was through the efforts of some very dedicated people who founded the Inland Waterways Association that they came back into life. If you're curious, Googe the IWA's history, especially people like Robert Aickman and Tom Rolt. Cheers!
One boat I saw in a video I saw(that I cant remember where) it had LED rope lights around the pidgeon boxes and other areas (LED lights in a clear or colored tube) to illuminate the tunnel. I assume the cords ran inside via holes in the pigeon boxes or some other place and were wired to switches. Gave the entire length of the boat illumination in tunnels.
Thank you and Merry Christmas. I am sending you enough poundage to buy some of your favorite Homefire coal. In many countries a lump of coal is considered an undesirable Christmas gift, but a Narrowboater considers it a blessing.
Norfolk Broads might be a good choice for a first experience on a boat. No locks, no tunnels and much more room generally. I suspect it gets extremely bust peak times of year though.
A very Happy Christmas and a good 2018 to you and thank you for all your fascinating videos they are leaps and bounds superior to what so much of today's mainstream tv has to offer.
Hi David, Thank you for another wonderful Vid/Vlog. Very enjoyable as usual. My Wife and I wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year. Looking forward to your episodes for 2018.
Merry Christmas David and I send good wishes for a grand New Year. As I watch most RUclips videos by an Apple TV gadget , i don't have (as far as I can see) the option for mashing the thumbs up button. I wonder how many of those get missed by us Apple TV viewers. To comment like this, I fire up the laptop. Re: License to drive a boat, the same here in the states, I believe. Any one the the dollars can jump in an XXX horse-powered wiz-bang and take off. There are safety inspections however. I look forward to lots of fine Cruises on the Cut.
Thank you John, for the Christmas wishes (which are, of course, reciprocated) and for making the effort to fire up the laptop! It's somewhat alarming, isn't it, that anyone can drive off in a boat... our safety inspections are every four years which isn't really that often!
Hi David Another great blog , always look forward to these and your van conversion , hope the cold and snow is not affecting you too much because us land lubbers have been virtual prepers because of it lol ( god help us in a real shortage ) it seems some get in a right state if they can’t visit Tesco!!! keep up the good work and all the best 👍
In tunnels it will help to put on internal lights as well, these will give a sense where the boat is in relation to the sides of the tunnel and will not blind oncoming boats.
I've seen a lot of people suggest that tip but on my boat it makes absolutely no discernible difference whatsoever. Must be how my internal lights are placed etc.
Very interesting as always. Someone suggested a head torch to me for the tunnels and I’ve just bought one but your comment about dazzling oncoming boaters is a bit of a concern! Also someone in either Canal Boat or Waterways World did an article on narrowboating in Europe and they took their boat on a wagon or on another boat as you mentioned. I think they’re planning on spending a significant amount of time there but it still seems like a lot of hassle to me. Thanks for another great video, it kept me entertained while my paint dries before the next coat!
I think I'd definitely go for a floodlight rather than a head torch, so as to give nice wide, gentle illumination to as much as possible rather than a narrow specific beam just in the direction you're looking.
To get a boat over to France, it isn't neccersarry to drive it or put (yourself) on a ship. It's possible to have it picked up at any canal (marina with a crane prefered) and have it delivered by lorry to the french side. The same companies offering so transport boats within the UK also can bring them overseas. In fact, it isn't adding a lot to the bill when the destination is across the channel, as the price is much more related to length of the boat and the cost of lifting it out (and onto the lorry) and back in again. 'Ship'ing a boat from like Leeds to London can be don under a grand. Even considering the need for special permits if the boat is longer than 15m (~50ft). Prices across the channel are similar. Also, at least until Brexit, there won't be any additional tarifs or taxes to be payed. So if you manage to drive your boat to an easy accessible crane (and pick a similar location in France, Belgium o Holland), it will aready pay of after 4 or 5 weeks of crusing. And you definitly want to do more once you switched sides.
I once managed to hire a boat on my own from Welshpool. The staff explained me how to handle the lift bridges. When handling locks ans bridges I always kept a line ashore in case the boat went somewhere I didn't want her to go. At one lock I threw the line on the roof only to find that the boat was nowhere near the ladder and the lock was too deep to jump on the roof. I opened a top paddle and flushed the boat out. I also went further then advised. After clearing the prop umpt times in less then a mile I decided to backout. The boat went everywhere except where I wanted her to go. I ended up by tying the tiller about midship, putting in reverse slowly and steering with the pole. It was a great weekend with lots of fun.
Thanks Dave for a fascinating set of questions and answers. Any plans yet for where you will go cruising next year? I always look forward to seeing your vlogs so do keep them coming. Happy Christmas and happy boating.
Excellent as always David, merry Christmas to you , am already looking forward to following you adventures for yet another year in 2018, all the very best to you and thank you , Barry
Enjoyed your video and are looking forward to part 2 of the next Question and Answers. Wishing you a happy Christmas and a great new year and enjoy your own company at christmas.
+ S/V The scandal, gossip and outrageously lewd behaviour on the British Canal network would make even Caligula's court blush. There was a pilot TV soap entitled "Naughty Narrowboat Nuggets". The British Board of Film Censors strangled it at birth, so to speak...
You mentioned The Basingstoke Canal. I've worked for a couple of charities on there for a number of years. It's owned primarily by Surrey and Hampshire County Councils, but with funding pressures it looks likely that we may end up with CRT in the longer term. It's doing well currently thanks to numerous volunteers, so long may it continue!
Although not a boater, but as a retired insurance guy, I think I can say that the security risks on a narrow boat are reflected in the insurance premium you pay. And as the premiums are surprisingly low I would say you're at greater risk in a house than on a boat.
@@CruisingTheCut That may also be true and I have never had occasion to study a narrow boat policy so I do not know the extent or restrictions of the cover offered. I was surprised at how low were the premiums you mentioned in an earlier video.
John I have a queston about exhaust pipes. On many engines I see a loop at the top of the pipe on many boats. They seem to be more perevelant on antique engines but i've seen them on all at one time or another. Happy Cruising
Did you notice how that poor lady at 11:08 appeared to start biting her nails as you were passing? Do you have a tunnel navigation reputation proceeding you that you've not shared? ; )
I know I'm some time late to the party, but regarding crossing the channel there was a couple based in Stone who crossed to France in their narrow boat, they wrote a book about their travels called Narrow Dog to Carcassone (they took their Whippet with them). Well worth a read 😎
I would suppose you'd recommend the Ashby canal if you'd done this video today... It's lock free, if I remember correctly from your account, and again, from your account, it is a VERY pretty piece of canal right up to the end.
A question I thought of, about water; does anyone catch rainwater for use on the boat? I grew up with tankwater, and would imagine you'd get a fairly decent bit of catchment off a narrowboat's roof; which could probably be piped into the water tank.
Yeah, the former I've done but the Ashby I hope to go up this year so I should have some footage of that in a few months. Meanwhile, Minimal List, Jono and Narrowboat Journeys have all documented it recently, if anyone reading this wants to see what the Ashby's like.
From Rugby Wharf to the top of the Ashby Canal is a 35 mile stretch of canal with only two locks and a short tunnel. It is ideal as a training canal for new boaters and hirers can get a boat from ABC at the wharf.
Sadly, I'll likely never see England again but an obvious follow-on question to the who-governs-the-canals question is: on the canalw not operated by the the CRT, are your CRT priveleges honored, or does that question even make any sense?
Ah, so you mean if I went on the river Avon (not CRT controlled) would any CRT facilities or rules etc apply? No, if a waterway is not CRT then the CRT has nothing to do with it and whichever authority looks after it sets the rules.
2 questions. Is the handle that is used for opening and closing the gates at the locks yours or is one kept at the lock? What happens when said handle accidentally gets dropped into the water?
A windlass apparently costs about 15 quid (20 bucks), so if you don’t want to bother with the magnet, you just eat the cost. I’d bet that every time the CRT closes down a lock for maintenance they remove a bunch of them.
steven roberts - Yeah, Carnforth to the outskirts of Preston is lock free, that used to be the limit of navigation but you can carry on now, not sure about locks after Preston though.
@@bjorntoulouse7523 past Preston through the ribble link has locks. Also, the Glasson arm of the Lancs canal has a few locks on it. Makes the Lancs canal a good candidate for narrow boat virgins
Lovely chat. Same seems to go for solo camping. The farther out and isolated the safer it is. My family criticize me being in a rural town and locking my bike up when about our huge four block town out shopping or to the library. But our bikes have not made the police blotter either. 😉😉😉
Great set of questions and some brilliant answers, very in depth. As to a route for novices then how about the Four Counties ring as that seems to be one that most hire companies recommend, and one I have done myself albeit 35 years ago! It can be done in a two weeks easily or can be split into many different shorter routes.
Nope. Ring lights are horrid things, giving a completely flat blast of light with no shade or contouring, not to mention their reflection in your eyes / glasses. A much better, prettier approach is the TV-standard "3 point" lighting setup
Thank you a good Q & A. Not too long, we could have listened to more, but probably best to keep them wanting more 😄. Nice to see you at the Xmas party. No show without punch, sorry couldn’t resist, but in our opinion you are the main man. Looking forward to many new vlogs in 2018. Merry Christmas 🎄 from Sally & Billy 🥂🙋🙋🏻♂️

HAHA thanks again for another fun presentation,,,,,its always great to see them,,,,regards,,,
17:50 "not that kinda pot" Absolutely love the humor...
"Not that kind of pot" - That made me chuckle. Loving your sense of humour in these vids lol
I hope you get your dream one day :-)
Have a fantastic Christmas CC - thanks for all your efforts!
No, just me on the boat this year.
That sounds about right!
Always interesting...thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it
Merry Christmas from Alaska! It's always fun to imagine living on a narrow boat!
The Llangollen canal is supplied by the river Dee at the horse shoe falls, that's why there's a flow.
Hi. Yes it's supplied by the falls but the reason it's allowed to flow is because the water company use it to transfer water.
Grant.
I've tried that and despite large "bus" windows in the front of my boat, it made no appreciable difference but I've heard other people swear by it.
I think your brilliant ! I love watching your videos , they really cheer me up . And you are far from boring like I have seen with others 😀
Haha, thank you. C'mon, they're not (that) boring ;-)
Glad you did this going off a Q list. Live is risky, really need two people, can be distracting, based on watching woodworking live Q&A
Great Q&A David...Really enjoyed the Questions and Answers :-) Looking forward to Part 2 :-)
Cheers Russ, I'll do the next one after Christmas.
Many thanks for a most informative session, David - some interesting questions, and some great answers 😃👍👏👏👏
Thank you and happy Christmas to you too :-)
I was so glad to see this. I'm hoping to buy a boat in a few years and all the information such as this is a huge help. I've made notes.
Thanks.
Great! Good luck.
Thank you.
Hi. Ta, yes I had a lock fitted over my fuel cap before I started my first cruise as I have heard such tales of theft.
Cruising Le Cut. That would be the most amazing canal-like thing ever.
Thanks for tuning in, glad you like them.
Brilliant video again. Hope you have a merry Christmas and new year. (Very selfish) I want more cruising and commentary videos.
There may be some but it'll have to wait until the nice cruising weather returns! Happy Christmas.
Cheers!
I like your hand held flood light,. Smart
Really excellent questions (and answers).
Thanks
So very interesting! Thanks for the info. A canal vacation is certainly on my bucket list and hopefully one day will get to do it.
Glad you liked it, cheers
Thanks David, look forward to more fireside Q&A’s. A very Happy holiday season to you and yours from frosty Montreal
And to you too. Cheers
My front light is a solar spot light. It's good for tunnels and night cruising.
Hi David, I hope you had a lovely Christmas. Wishing you a lovely New Year. xx
12:22 usually when we're away we get a huge amount of bugs at night trying to get towards our lights. Best to keep the windows and curtains closed!
I like that idea!
Nerdowells. As a security guard that is my favorite word.
Ne'er-do-wells
Thank you and Merry Christmas. I am sending you enough poundage to buy some of your favorite Homefire coal. In many countries a lump of coal is considered an undesirable Christmas gift, but a Narrowboater considers it a blessing.
Haha, absolutely, there's no finer gift to a boater! Cheers indeed :-)
21 minutes!! it felt like about 5 minutes, I feel robbed.
Play it four times and it'll feel about right.
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a great new year Dave, stay warm, Ken from Australia.
Thank you Ken, the stove is roaring away. Happy Christmas.
Norfolk Broads might be a good choice for a first experience on a boat. No locks, no tunnels and much more room generally. I suspect it gets extremely bust peak times of year though.
I think you're right. It would be an interesting experience though.
A very Happy Christmas and a good 2018 to you and thank you for all your fascinating videos they are leaps and bounds superior to what so much of today's mainstream tv has to offer.
Thank you very much indeed! Happy Christmas.
Hi David, Thank you for another wonderful Vid/Vlog. Very enjoyable as usual. My Wife and I wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year. Looking forward to your episodes for 2018.
Thank you. Merry Christmas!
Love the discipline.
Hi David
Another great blog , always look forward to these and your van conversion , hope the cold and snow is not affecting you too much because us land lubbers have been virtual prepers because of it lol ( god help us in a real shortage ) it seems some get in a right state if they can’t visit Tesco!!!
keep up the good work and all the best 👍
I get into a right state if I can't get to Tesco either!
Good show old Bean!
Dutch barges can cross the channel on a nice day relatively safely, but obliviously they are widebeams.
So can a lot of boats.. Look at how far the some little fishing boats go... an Sailing vessels
Always a pleasure to watch!
Thank you!
Fascinating Q&A, David. Thanks so much for all the info.
Cheers guys
Hiring a penichette in France, on the "Canal du Nivernais", very nice tour. You dont need any licence there. Look for "Locaboats"
I’ll be watching the commercials from now on. 😉
Good info, cheers
Thanks for that Hans.Could I buy a French boat and put it in English canals?
I’ve heard of boaters going to France across the channel roping two boats together to give more stability.
That sounds fantastic!
Thanks Dave for a fascinating set of questions and answers. Any plans yet for where you will go cruising next year? I always look forward to seeing your vlogs so do keep them coming. Happy Christmas and happy boating.
No plans yet. Cheers :-)
Excellent as always David, merry Christmas to you , am already looking forward to following you adventures for yet another year in 2018, all the very best to you and thank you , Barry
Thanks Barry. Best festive wishes to you as well. Cheers
Enjoyed your video and are looking forward to part 2 of the next Question and Answers. Wishing you a happy Christmas and a great new year and enjoy your own company at christmas.
Thank you. Hope you have a great Christmas too :-)
No big revelations, but always nice to see you enjoy the tranquilly of winter boat life.
I'll try to think of some exciting revelations for the next one :-)
OK, good info. Ta.
Although not a boater, but as a retired insurance guy, I think I can say that the security risks on a narrow boat are reflected in the insurance premium you pay. And as the premiums are surprisingly low I would say you're at greater risk in a house than on a boat.
But presumably the contents value is rather less in a boat, generally, so wouldn't that mean low premiums?
@@CruisingTheCut That may also be true and I have never had occasion to study a narrow boat policy so I do not know the extent or restrictions of the cover offered. I was surprised at how low were the premiums you mentioned in an earlier video.
I enjoyed your various rants
Haha, good
Happy Christmas to you thank you for all the vid's very enjoyable for us land lubbers to watch .
Thanks Michael - happy Christmas to you too
John I have a queston about exhaust pipes.
On many engines I see a loop at the top of the pipe on many boats. They seem to be more perevelant on antique engines but i've seen them on all at one time or another.
Happy Cruising
I noticed them too.. btw.. his first name is David
Q&A vlogs are always so great! Thanks for this one! :)
I have read it!
Cruising le Cut, that's nice!
I would suppose you'd recommend the Ashby canal if you'd done this video today... It's lock free, if I remember correctly from your account, and again, from your account, it is a VERY pretty piece of canal right up to the end.
Merry Christmas David can’t wait to see the x-mas vlog/video 🎁
Thank you, merry Christmas to you. Don't get too excited, it's just a bunch of "merry Christmas" messages from the Boat-Tubers.
Very interesting, thanks. Merry Christmas.
Thanks Alan. And to you.
A question I thought of, about water; does anyone catch rainwater for use on the boat? I grew up with tankwater, and would imagine you'd get a fairly decent bit of catchment off a narrowboat's roof; which could probably be piped into the water tank.
No real need, there are sufficient water points around the network
No flies on the boat, as the army of spiders eat them :)
You never had any RYA narrowboat training? We got ourselves a real maverick, an outlaw living on the edge! :0
Lovely vid, had to go back a bit for the brief comment on the Pot plants... made me laugh!
:-)
One of the best routes for beginners is the Oxford North & Ashby canal..about 50 miles & only 4 locks.
Good point. I'm not a huge fan of the North Oxford up to Hawkesbury, I found it a bit grim in parts. I hear the Ashby's nice though.
Very interesting QA Dave , merry Christmas mate .👍🎄🍷 Stay warm .
Cheers, and you!
Maybe you could add a link in the description for the next Q&A instalment - as it's not episode 121 !
2 questions. Is the handle that is used for opening and closing the gates at the locks yours or is one kept at the lock? What happens when said handle accidentally gets dropped into the water?
The windlasses are owned by each boat owner. If you drop it, you go fishing with a magnet (and most boaters carry at least one spare)
Then your fishing with a magnet !
A windlass apparently costs about 15 quid (20 bucks), so if you don’t want to bother with the magnet, you just eat the cost.
I’d bet that every time the CRT closes down a lock for maintenance they remove a bunch of them.
lancaster is lock free short and great for newbies lovely countryside too.
Good tip, cheers
steven roberts - Yeah, Carnforth to the outskirts of Preston is lock free, that used to be the limit of navigation but you can carry on now, not sure about locks after Preston though.
@@bjorntoulouse7523 past Preston through the ribble link has locks. Also, the Glasson arm of the Lancs canal has a few locks on it. Makes the Lancs canal a good candidate for narrow boat virgins
Hi love all your videos such a joy to watch .Have a great christmas vic linda .
Lovely chat. Same seems to go for solo camping. The farther out and isolated the safer it is. My family criticize me being in a rural town and locking my bike up when about our huge four block town out shopping or to the library. But our bikes have not made the police blotter either. 😉😉😉
And bikes will always vanish, given half a chance.
Great set of questions and some brilliant answers, very in depth. As to a route for novices then how about the Four Counties ring as that seems to be one that most hire companies recommend, and one I have done myself albeit 35 years ago! It can be done in a two weeks easily or can be split into many different shorter routes.
Good tip, cheers for that.
bow thrusts are perfect if you're Hans Solo.
Can you video the complete process of operating a deep lock in both directions single handed please?
Not easily, no, since I would be busy dealing with the lock. Realistically, I’d need someone else to do with filming.
Ooh I have got video light like that there are also ring lights now on a tripod too.
Do you use something akin for indoor filming??
Nope. Ring lights are horrid things, giving a completely flat blast of light with no shade or contouring, not to mention their reflection in your eyes / glasses. A much better, prettier approach is the TV-standard "3 point" lighting setup
Hey, David! Wishing you a Merry Christmas, and All the Best for a Happy New Year! Looking forward to your adventures in 2018...stay warm and well!
Cheers John - merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
Oh Thank God! ... I was getting bored at work with nothing to watch.
Methinks you're missing the concept of "work"!! ;-)
Its quite possible... :-)
same here :D
