  • Many acoustic guitar players wonder if the small parts on their guitars-the nut, the saddle, and others-actually affect the sound of the guitar. This time on Coffee & Guitars with Andy Powers, our master designer explains how different materials used in different guitar parts can actually change the tone of your guitar.

    Porosity topic was worthwhile. Makes sense that the more consistency we can get out of the saddle, the more likelihood our tonal differences will be predictable also. So having a controlled building of density in a layered approach makes sense that the impact across the base and treble will be more predictable in the change to the sound transfer. I like that.

    Interesting information. I have a Big Baby Taylor with the Micarta Saddle and Nubone nut and the guitar sounds incredible and sustains for days (and it's a pure acoustic, no pick-up).
    I'm sure everybody has their preferences but I couldn't be happier with the sound!!

    The only reason that I chose to install a 'Tusq' nut is for better lubracation, that's all. As Andy Powers points out, the nut will have no influence on fretted notes. If there is an advantage for better tone when open strings are played, then all the better. At the very least, a nut made from synthetic material can't hurt.

    Hi from Spain. I have an early 814CE with the fishman piezo and I have had the bridge saddle replaced twice with bone which I think was the original material. I find for my style that my guitar sounds too bright, would changing to "micardo"(I think that is what you said?) make the sound more mellow? Is there a particular model for an 814CE or are all Taylor bridge saddles compatable? Your video was very informative, Kind regards,John.

    The Micarta saddles look great. I need to replace the saddle on my 1996 710. On the Taylor site I see a Micarta called "NS" and another called "Wave". Which one is correct for a 710? Thanks.

    What's the guitar used in this video? Are we hearing it through the mics or its pickup?
    I don't know about acoustics, but the nut makes a noticeable difference in the tone of an electric. I've been listening to comparisons on RUclips between Tusq and other nut materials and the differences aren't subtle. Tusq is much brighter and seems to remove some of the low end.

      It’s a Builder’s Edition 717. You’re hearing the mic exclusively. I always take a DI from guitars with pickups as a safety.

    Interesting. Gibson puts a bone nut and bone saddle on the high end custom shop acoustics, namely the Songwriter custom and J45 custom. Both have the LR Baggs VTC system.

    I'm a Fender guy when it comes to electrics so brass is what I would go with on acoustics, because of the bright tone. This video was more of an advertisement for their own guitars with him just saying that their saddle material is better than bone. Take this videos information with a grain of salt, and buy different saddles for yourself. Plastic is dull with less sustain, bone is right in between with better sustain and clarity, and brass is the polar opposite of plastic with brighter tones, yet still with the same or more sustain than bone.

    I can see how from a factory/mass production standpoint the most consistent material would be easiest to work with...but for pure tone on a single instrument nobody is choosing mikarda over bone or real ivory. A natural substance is always better than a synthetic one in my book

    • @zombockerman
      @zombockerman Год назад +2

      Why do you say that? He just explained the difference in the density of materials and yet you still would choose an inconsistent porous material?

    • @gemininimeg
      @gemininimeg Год назад

      @@zombockermanThese kind of people will never understand that's why, they call themselves 'purest'. It's like when I argument about Ukuleles and why I'd choose other woods or materials over Hawaiian woods, like rare exotic woods which I prefer.
      The Ukulele wasn't even invented by the Hawaiians. I have nothing against them, they do make some of the best Ukuleles. The only thing that Hawaiians did was make the 'Machete' now known as the Ukulele popular. The 'Machete de Braga' was the original version by the Portuguese.

      Hacia ariba that’s correct, but the amount of bone you’d have to go through by hand to find enough for thousands of guitars a year would be really wasteful of labor and materials.

    Hi guys can you help me! I'm a Taylor guitar user and I really need your help. I've been using my 816ce Taylor since 2013 and I'm having issues with its nut. I was just wondering what nut size should I use to replace it. Thank you if you will respond.

      bone capos would still render useless as the strings would still be fretted on the metal frets

    • @sc12100
      @sc12100 Год назад

      The capo sits behind the fret
      That fret changes responsibility and is now the nut.
      You’re not gonna hear anything capo or otherwise behind that fret!

    Listen to this people............Strings,picks,ambient,expression and more factors determinate the final sound of a guitar even the mood of the player on the day.Don't be foolish thinking you're going to sound the same as RUclips performances.
