Y'all know this is just my opinion, right? What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh? Видеоклипы
Flying Lotus is a fucking genius
yes
Never catch me always makes me emotional
+Kyrie Irving definitely
dude could check his emails and make a better show than everyone
It's in his blood.
"this is what Tyler the Creator wishes some of his songs sounded like." ouch.
This comment layers itself in irony as years go by
@@rodrigoperes3336 crazy what can happen as time progresses eh
legendary comment
Old takes exposed
Harsh but true
Kendrick's verse perfectly represents the stubbornness of life in the context of the album's concept. This just shows that FlyLo's features/collabs are meaningful, fleshed-out, and carefully selected in a way you just don't see that often modern music. Combine that with his mature production aesthetic and serious instrumental enthusiasm. Great record.
ShellacSoup I listened to it while on 200 ug of lsd for like... Idk 4 hours straight? The album didn't feel repetitive AT ALL and those moment when Kendrick and snoop dog came up in the album I was... just speechless
@@santiagoromero3475 even the album art being done by shintaro kago of all people.
not modern music, all music.
Should've been a 9 or 10.
dead man's tetris rules
HOLD UP HOLD UP
Agreed.
hol up hol up
those gun sounds and distorted vocals are amazing
Hardest track on the album
This entire album, as an experience, reminds me of some of my friends descriptions of their experiences with DMT. As a drug, it scares the shit out of me, but this album gives me the impression of an out of body journey, someone who is forced to witness their death and by doing so, comes to understand the importance of their life.
beautifully said right there, exactly how i feel about this album, too!
Yessss
DMT is also an acronym for Dead Man's Tetris because I read somewhere that FlyLo wrote it to sound like you are experiencing DMT or something along those lines.
Agreed
Prana Khan I listened to the album on 200 ug of lsd for like 4 hours straight IT NEVER felt repetitive and it just left me speechless
I listened to this album stoned as hell in my backyard under a huge palm tree. One of the best music listening experiences I've ever had.
Godspeed Celestial next step is to listen to it on LSD, it’ll make you feel like you died, went to the center of universe and had sex with god, then came back
Godspeed Celestial me literally rn oh my god
@@thecooestlguyever says a lot about if you need drugs to enjoy stuff LOL
@@yourmusiclover9205 i love life in general (with or without drugs) but drugs enhance experience of life itself, it's not about whether or not someone needs drugs to enjoy things, but psychoactive chemicals can enhance experiences past a point you wouldn't even be able to imagine otherwise. Try to open your mind a littlw you might find that trying different things can expand your perspective and open new doors in your life. My life has become significantly better from use of psychedelics in general, as it allowed me to overcome difficulties in my life by exposing me to different neuropathways in a more directly aware manner. Of course, everything has its downsides, especially if used irresponsibly, but choosing wether or not to do drugs is a choice not dissimilar to other choices one makes in life.
@@thecooestlguyever I’m worried for you, if you can’t enhance life without drugs to the extent that you believe drugs do there are other ways, better ways, to do what you explained on your later comment on the topic. It also begs the question why do you even need to feel that way, because the times that you’re not in that magical world you think you’re in you just feel terrible. You can’t have good without bad, people that use drugs in that way that you do fail to understand that.
The Boys who died in their sleep instrumental is AMAZING.
8- ok
9- great
10- death grips
This guy gets it
tru bruh
Asapgross 8-ok?
Well only if you are fucking NME
Hahahah
10 is exactly what this is album is
strong 9 / light 10 amazing record
The scale stops at 10 dude.
Alfred Larsson shit man, I have to re-evaluate everything I believe in now.
Alfred Larsson Nah, it goes from "light 10" to just "10". At least with the two 10/10 albums he's reviewed, it looks that way.
Strong 10 to a 11 it’s that good
This album is what you get when you put jazz fusion, hip hop, electronic and experimental music together to create an amazing spiritual experience of death. I was pleasantly surprised by the way the album starts of, it just unexpectedly explodes into space and stays there until the album is over. Didn't have an issue with the tracks being short though.
My favorite FlyLo LP so far and definitely my favorite of the year so far. This is modern day jazz.
Highlights of the album in my opinion: Theme, Cold Dead, Never Catch Me (especially the outro, that shit's amazing), Turkey Dog Coma, Coronus The Terminator, Decent Into Madness, The Boys Who Died In Their Sleep, The Protest
Thanks for reviewing this album, Mr. Ebony Poontango
I couldn't agree more, its such a genius album and there's nothing like it
3:06 - Theme

this is the type of record that requires more than just "listening"
This guy gets it.
+FREED. You both are amazing.
Exactly
Feeling.
That is the reason why i just don't feel it that much.
Anti-climactic? No. Selling it way short. FlyLo said the last track "The Protest" was the most important on the album. Not to mention, it's gorgeous. Wish it was 10 minutes long.
exactly, i didn't think it was anti-climactic, it felt like walking thru the gates of heaven or some shit, it really ended on a uplifting note which dope. i wish the last track was longer though. but thats the point, to me it adds replay value, as soon as the album ended i wanted to listen to it again. it was like watching a really good movie and being sad it was over
Dude i know right... Did he even fucken listen to that shit. The chanting of "we will live on, forever and ever" was so damn beautiful. Then into that classic beat and the humming was damn beautiful and wrapped up the albums theme so well!
I also disagreed with him about dead mans tetris. I thought it was good.
how baked are you to be reviewing this shit so deeply, its all a pretentious game u fools! #420blazeit
He said that same thing about "Coronus, The Terminator".
The Protest isn't the last song
Pornthony Hubtano
There is only one way to truly appreciate this album and it is called Lysergic acid diethylamide.
I find Cosmogramma to be a very awesome LSD experience as well, if you're up for an intense trip from the music
Cosmogramma and this are hands down my two favorite acid albums
Anything made by flying lotus and flume is a 10/10
Cosmogramma's really good on acid too, but if you try to listen to anything else afterwards it's just dull. Too bad it's not a solid day long
shut the fuck up
Here's a bit of trivia:
The vocal samples used on the track "Turtle" are actually from the theme to "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage" composed by Ennio Morricone. The film itself is an early example of the italian giallo (stylized horror) genre and the directorial debut of Dario Argento. So even that sample is in keeping with the death theme of the album.
The_JoE Also, the beginning of Coronus samples a vocal of Yma Sumac! I thought that was so cool!
I DID love this album, but I feel like I'm kinda TRYING to like it more than I actually like it. I don't have any complaints really, I guess it's just kinda too... intense for me? I don't know.
Me too, i think what puts me off this record is that almost every trick (and beat) has been already overused by Flylo that I found it repetitive. That last song also, same beat as 'Getting There' and the build up on the latter is a lot better.
listen to it as jazz fusion instead of hip hop and it makes a lot more sense
Misael Perez those beats are completely different.
This is just /the/ response to music that's going in a direction you don't quite get from a musician you love. There's no effort for me.
Didn't really listen to FlyLo before this album was announced tho :))
honestly love FlyLo, can't stop listening to this album
finally something above a 6
He just gave Iceage a 9/10 two days ago.
fandango has given quite a few 8-10s this year
Sorry nerds, I haven't really been following Fantano this year. I pretty much only watch Cal's appliances, then I dip.
Dr Zombi Dip, I dip, you dip, dip, I dip, you dip, I dip
Dr Zombi Why would you make a statement like that and then claim ignorance, that was like a swift slap to the taint
This album is meant to be listened with your eyes closed, don't pay attention to the tracklist, listen to it wholly, as one piece. It's an amazing journey.
Least favourite track is 'Stirring'?! That track (while short) is bloody gorgeous and beautifully haunting. It goes so well with 'Coronus, The Terminator' too! Great review though.
The album was playing (to my knowledge) in its entirety at my local record store this past weekend. While I thoroughly enjoyed the tracks that played and the overall vibe of the album, I'm just not sure that it's as groundbreaking, or as definitive, as Lil B's "Blue Flame" mixtape.
I need to loop turtles for 10 min & fall asleep to it every night
For real
Obligatory Cadence was a wobbla
I feel like FlyLo and Squarepusher should work together someday and make something amazing.
Finally happening
The album really felt like a stream of consciousness meditation on death, and the jazzy sound kind of complemented it. FlyLo did another incredible job on this effort.
@theneedledrop
sometimes I get high and really appreciate your videos you're editing is awesome
If you buy the vinyl the last song does not just fade out completely, it gets quiet for a bit then fades back in with some beautiful textures that make u feel like ur finally entering heaven. I interpreted the quiet part as a respectful "moment of silence" for those who have actually passed. I love this record.
Definitely my favorite FlyLo album. I think it would easily be a 10 if some of the songs were a bit longer, but for now I give it a 9.5
Truth
Agreed. 9.5 suits it well. I've been playing this nonstop in my car. Have you listened to it with ear/headphones?
mariohiph
I've listened to the album in both ways
Have you listened it in FLAC definition, lying in your bed in the night? What a trip.
The real question should be, who has listened to it on vinyl?
Hell Can Wait!!!!!!!!!! And the short track lengths on this album get on my nerves but I got over it eventually.
Loved the touch with showing the length of the other albums.
Really love the concept of this album along with how it was delivered in relationship to jazz music. Truly an experience, and much credit goes to the technical personnel, as there are many incredible guest performances.
"Never Catch Me" is amazing. I love Kendrick, and I love the meaning.
I am glad that you enjoyed this album. I was quite curious on your opinion.
Just wanna thank you for all your reviews. You've gotten me into some favorable music!
Really good review, even though I don't agree with all of it, I like how much you go into it and the depth of research you use. The work you put in really shows 👌 thanks
Haha great review. Personally I loved this album inside and out. The last song was climactic in my opinion, with that beat that gives me goosebumps every time. Plus its just a powerful song, especially in the beginning. I also loved the beat on dead man's tetris.
Vince Staples - Shyne Coldchain 2 or
Vince Staples - Hell Can Wait (EP)
Really like this review. I also love the transition from Dead Man's Tetris to Turkey Dog Coma, my favorite song on the album. Goosebumps. You should review more electronic music. :)
left alone these artworks on on the sleeve.. beautiful
Diamond D - Diam Piece pleaseeeee. One of the best hip hop albums of the year.
Postthony Mortemno
Been down since 1983 and the beat tapes.///Flying Lotus does it again! Love the album.. but only had a few quick spins. Waiting for the LP to come in the mail... can't wait
very psyched on the new flylo, I also felt that until the quiet comes was a little too subdued as well. steven is BOMBASTIC on this one
Honestly think in due time Until the Quiet Comes will be considered Flying Lotus's magnum opus. Not only does it grow on you, but it feels more and more personal with each listen. The album never fails to give me chills.
I think You're Dead! finds a perfect balance of pursuing interesting experimental ideas while at the same time maintaining a very distinct style FlyLo has been known for. It's lively and appropriately poignant at times, but never overbearing. It succeeds at everything it attempts, and it's just a really fun listen. I have no complaints but for some reason I just don't ever see it being my favorite from FlyLo.
Cosmogramma/Los Angeles
Cosmogramma is still #1 for me, but you're right about UTQC being massively underrated. In fact, it's probably the FlyLo record I listen to the most nowadays. I had it shelved for a long time, but when I went back to it, it was brilliant. Really a fantastic record.
Anthony, what is te worst album youve listened to this year?
tnd announced that teenwitch is the worst album of the year over twitter
That rustie album was pretty bad
***** Dude, watch his review of the latest Foxygen release. I think it takes precedence over Ultraviolence
He didn't review it but on his Rate Your Music he gave that Jason Feathers album a 0.5/5. NOW JOIN ME IN PRESSURING theneedledrop TO REVIEW IT!
Good review, great album, can't wait to see Flylo live!
Glad you enjoyed this album so much Anthony! It's definitely my fave of the year so far, and I'm so glad FlyLo didn't let us down after Until the Quiet Comes. I get what you're saying about the ending feeling a little anticlimactic but I personally really enjoyed it because it sounded like classic FlyLo. I listened/watched the live stream with some friends and I remember when the album ended one of my friends blurted out, "I felt like I was snorting coke the first few tracks. I'm glad he calmed down a bit at the end." lmao
Now i can officially love this album thank you basedtony godtango.
Please review Rapsody latest "Beauty & The Beast". IMO The only female MC in the game worth talking about.
Jean Grae, Snow tha Product, Nitty Scott MC just to name a few.
I encourage you to check out Dessa, my friend. She's on of my favorite artists.
All those above plus Azealia Banks. Just cause she's a bitch doesn't mean she can't spit.
I'm gonna be honest, IMO Snow is kinda mediocre.
***** Tempest is a gem...but her heavy subject matter doesn't provide for an easy listen. That's why many can't muster the attention span to be able to fully appreciate her i guess. :/
I agree! Every single song along with its dynamic transitions stimulated me on so many dimensions. I like your review though, very thorough.
4:33 this is exactly what i did when i listened to this for the first time this week and it was fucking amazing. I wasn't feeling none of the tracks when this records came out but as a whole it's one of the best albums this decade.
Anthony needs to do a track review on BBNG - Velvet.
Yep
Yep
dead mans tetris is the shit
Hey Anthony, did you check the album out when he was streaming it along with the Psychedelic Death Trip video? That video really enhanced my listening experience.
Great. Can't wait to hear it!
Loved every track on this album except for "the boys who died in their sleep". The vocals reminded me of IceJJFish.
FKA twigs and flying lotus should do a collaboration
Concerning some of the songs that were shorter, that you said present a brief flash of an idea but are never fully fleshed out; that's EXACTLY what I felt about The Protest on this album. It created such this weird longing, like I was waiting for something and then it was over. Feelings were a tad hurt, but I still replay all 1:18 of that song until I get to work in the morning.
:)
love the review, love flylo
I think what puts me off this record is that almost every trick (and beat) has been already overused by Flylo that I found it repetitive. That last song also, same beat as 'Getting There' and the build up on the latter is a lot better. Found myself trying hard to like it, is that bad?
It's okay to not like it, but FlyLo is extremely diverse. Maybe give it a couple more listens and the tracks will become more distinguished.
Damn I really like dead mans tetris
Hi Anthony and people reading this comment, great video by the way! Really like this flying lotus album since I first heard it a few days ago on odd future radio (I think they played the whole album) are there any other Jazz/hip hop album that are worth checking out or any other flying lotus album (this is my first full listen to his work and I really liked it!) thanks!
i enjoy watching review on albums i enjoyed listening to
"This is what Tyler the Creator wishes his songs could be"
We still in the Wolf/Cherry Bomb era at this point huh. Imagine saying something that doesnt age well.
You're Dead > Cosmogramma
I can understand that. But I hold too many good memories with Cosmogramma.
nah bro, nah
They are both interchangeable tbh.
Thems fighting words, son.
don't tell me how to do my job on the based god
Good review, Anthony. I personally have 'You're Dead' on my short list for albums of the year, at least as it currently stands, and I wasn't even a terribly big fan of Cosmogramma and some of FlyLo's previous efforts. Whilst this thought may make some jazz aficionados cringe, I do think that this LP, much more so than any of FlyLo's previous works, will serve as an entry into modal jazz and jazz fusion for some people, and at least some of that accessibility can be attributed to the shortness and diversity of a lot of the tracks.
I agree that the fade out on "The Boys..." really irked me too! Good review, wish you wouldve talked about Brendon Small of Metalocalypse on guitar. Flylo was greatly inspired by Queen when writing this record and those meaty riffs are a new texture in Flylo's arsenal and thought they fit his sound real well.
GODFLESH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review STN MTN by childish gambino
Grant Jackson hopefully this time he's listening to it more than once so he can actually understand the meaning behind it, unlike because the internet. I bet he listened to that once and made the review off of it, because he was wrong about a lot of the stuff he said on the review.
Also, review Kauai By Childish Gambino.
Don't forget about Kauai
Guys, he can't stand Gambino, what's the point?
Knicksdb
He wasn't wrong about the screenplay being very predictable.
Hello, randomly found this channel while looking up the BishopxDoom album and really enjoyed the insight on that project. It would be awesome if you could review Action Bronson's Mr. Wonderful
Love it
Hope his next one is even further out. On the Corner/Get Up With It futuristic jazz funk for the 21st Century would be good or thereabouts.
Good review
KAYO DOT - COFFINS ON IO
ELECTRIC WIZARD - TIME TO DIE
Anthony please review the new childish gambino mixtape and ep project, STN MTN Kauai
I am really interested in that review, too!
did Anthony ever review Los Angeles? That's my favorite FlyLo record and wanted to see his opinion
i seriously love this album. the sound of this album blows me away. i love jazz and hip hop and these are some of the jazziest drums iv ever heard. this is an album for people who have an ear for complicated sound not a casual listener.
Still waiting on that Feel Good review for The Internet
Album came out ages ago, give it a rest dude. You know he only reviews new shit unless its classics week.
It was a joke Henry, I'm just upset he never got to review it because PNL wasn't good and they stepped their game up since then
6DADADA Ah fair enough. Let's be honest though, with some of the stuff people request you could've easily been serious haha
STILL WAITING
review Alt J This Is All Yours
I will
The drummer on one of the songs on the album is actually Thundercat's older brother Ronald Bruner.
The music video for 'ready err not' have a whole new feel to that particular song. After listening to it before the music video came out I thought it was a quirky addition to the album but the video put such a dark slant on the song. So interesting that flylo can totally change the mood of a song just by making a video for it.
3:14 - 3:17. Pause.
It would've been a pause If he said
"So HUGE! So MASSIVE! And in your face."
this album changed me
Did you buy the album?
+Kyle Tomlinson No, but should I? I think it's pretty solid.
+jaidsalgado I bought it on vinyl for my birthday
Rane Shounds NIce man, I might get one in the summer when I have more money LOL. I'm a broke college student :(
+Kyle Tomlinson I bought the vinyl, and there's so much beautiful art work
i diagree on one thing - the last song "the protest" is fucking amazing, arguably my favorite track off the whole album, the bump is just so good! and the vocals make me feel some type of way
I completely agree, just wish it was longer, I wish he would create a 1hr version of this album. Fly lo has the gift to take his listeners on a journey with dynamic and inventive landscapes, and I don't think he is giving enough credit to his creations by cutting them so short.
As soon as you made that dumb pun my video crashed.
Review the new Jaden Smith track Melancholy its actually really good
he has flow, but he can't spit at all. give jaden a couple years, he has potential.
After "After Earth" came out, I can't take anything he does seriously. The dude has a bigger ego than Donald Trump and can't spit worth anything.
It's actually pretty terrible.
and Fast. I loved Fast.
i want to root for him because nobody else is
but i haven't listened yet and not sure i want to
You nailed this one Fantanood, bloody nailed it.
That cosmogramma in the back tough.
aside from the collab with Kendrick, i am not too happy with Flying Lotus's new album, out of 19 tracks, perhaps 3 truly stand out. i am profoundly sad as fuck, i think Cosmogramma is one of the best albums of all time.
this album feels darker and sinister than before (which is alright i guess because he's going for a morbid theme but it turned me off a lot of the tracks), i am so confused as to why you would call this album "more upbeat", it is definitely not. the hip hop beats took a backseat to a jazz that's too heavily distorted and isn't as synergistic with the other musical elements, like it was in past albums. the blues guitar is sometimes replaced by an overbearing power metal guitar that sounds awful within Flylo's context. the whimsical sense of wonder, magic and spirituality experienced in his past albums is rarely found in this one, there's more of a sense of dread and roughness. what happened here?
there is no way this is an 8/10, i'm sorry
i always find myself returning to his past albums to listen to them again, but other than Never Catch Me, Eyes Above, and The Protest, the rest of this album is forgettable. the manipulation of string instruments in Cosmogramma, the harps, the jazz, the sampling of ping pong balls and heart monitors, the flawless modulation and basslines in Until the Quiet Comes, the "laser" sounds ... this is really one of his worst albums yet
***** Understand that when Flying Lotus makes an album, his albums are intrapersonal(which takes place within a person's mind to clarify or analyze about a situation) Cosmogramma(One of his best albums) is an album that is going to be listened by an individual personally. You having friends over getting ready to get turnt up on a Flying Lotus album is a major no no. And FLying Lotus realizes this, and in an interview, the interviewer asked "Why don't you play the songs how they were played on the album in your shows?" Flylo replied and said "The album was meant to be more of a personal experience, doing shows allows for a more upbeat atmosphere that you can enjoy listening to with friends."
Those past albums that you spiritually experienced are his PAST albums. "You're Dead" is not "Cosmogramma" or "Until the quiet comes," it's its OWN album. If you haven't noticed by now, Flying Lotus is an experimental artist that likes to try new things, and "You're Dead" is his new thing. Don't expect to get an experience of spirituality on every single album because if you do, you will be highly disappointed like you are now.
“This is one of his worst albums yet”
Flamagra:
Why such a genious like Herbie Hancock wasn't mentioned?
Pranas Germanavicius his feature was felt like a background.most features would be very upfront but herbie felt like a background player.
But doesn't he composed some of the songs?
Pranas Germanavicius did he?i didnt really dig in to much to his role in this album as i didnt feel like his trademark flare was noticeable.
I think H.Hancocks addition to this album was intentionally subtle. To add definition, though not too be highlighted.
Solid review bro
Great review.
oi MR NERD FACE! review weezers new album or else
Watch out, Anthony!!!!
but anon, weezer sucks
Soppsau only ratitude sucks
I liked it :D
Death grips
Greath dips
Deathony Griptano
The Dead Firmly-Grasp-Its
this is my favorite acid album.
Been following the discussion on the IDM list, and I actually just missed out on seeing Flying Lotus live... However, I really enjoyed the album. IDM-ers hated the shortness of the album, glad to see someone enjoying it. Also, I loved David Firth's video for Ready Err Not.
he didn't really mention that this is a JAZZ album (can't expect a 20something white man who know who HH is either) and if you go in wanting hip hop beats you may be disappointed, HOWEVER, it is one of the best albums i've heard this year and as previously stated from the horses mouth its meant to be listened to in sequence-track times be damned. anthony is always worried about fucking NUMBERS, man.
anyways i'm going to see him on sunday & i'm psyched :P
He knows who hh is, probably better than you
Fandingo owns Head Hunters vinyl and mentions Hancock in the description though
Anthony knows a lot about jazz and is almost 30 so...
Tasty912
i read the description before, which is only that to me - an afterthought where he plugs himself, which is fine. ive watched his vinyl collection vids too and no one here is comparing dicksize (doesn't that look so much better as one word?) but hes hardly dug past the top soil when it comes to jazz. sall good tho.
Totally a Jazzy album (and Fant did mention it many times). But FlyLo isn't known for a more traditional Jazzesque style. He's known and loved for his electronic music, guided by Jazz sensibilities.
It's a decent album. But, not what I know and love about FlyLo.
I was personally disappointed by this. Most of the songs just feel like interludes. It sounds fantastic but the songs themselves deliver very little most of the time. Jazz fusion is a genre that needs time to breathe. Doesn't work with such short tracks.
Jazz fusion can be whatever the fuck you want it to be, but I get your point
This isn't your father's "jazz fusion," it's Flying Lotus' own inventive musical style. This "breathes" in your mind after it ends. Give it another try.
You missed the point. Treat it as one whole piece.
I guess that's your opinion -- would you prefer it if the songs were drawn-out just so they're longer? I don't think that would have had the same immediacy. I like this album.
Agree, a lot of the shorter tracks take some steam out of the album, especially after the mid-way point. But the first 9 tracks or so are brilliant.
Anthony's point of how certain songs build up incredibly and then just end, maybe that's the point, how death is a sudden end to a vibrant life, sometimes far sooner than people expect. I'm not saying this is intentional or even the case, but it's definitely possible!
Wondering what your opinion is on Tinashe's debut album 'Aquarius'. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would.
