    Small correction at 30:38: AF-ON on the lens button only starts the AF, not Pro Capture. The latter must be engaged by half pressing the shutter button. Sorry for the confusion!
    What I mean is that I found this configuration (AF-ON on the lens button) very useful with Pro Capture when I was trying to photograph small birds in flight near a feeder. The action was so fast and brief that I had to time very precisely when to engage the autofocus. Being able to do that with my left thumb on the lens made it so that my right hand’s only job was to activate Pro Capture, and then press the shutter button fully once the moment was right.

      Have you succed with setting up a dual back button focus with ordinary c-af on one back button and another af-setup on the other (for example bird Af in the subjekt det. mode)? IO haven´t. But it would be strange if it was impossible, On Sony, Canon and Nikon Z9 it can be done.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Год назад +1

      If we're talking birds in flight, or wildlife in general, I think it's worth it, especially for the better AF. The EVF is also a nice upgrade. Otherwise it depends what kind of photos you take with the E-M1 II. There isn't a big improvement in image quality for example, especially when it comes to raw files.

      @@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons I have set C1 to diamond with 1/640 sec, 10fps, bird detection on. Full screen AF is useless for small birds in brush and also for distant birds in flat lighting. C2 is set the same except all screen and 1/2000 sec. C3 is set the same as C2 except for animals. What I have discovered is that bird detection works quite well for coyotes and deer. I don't have to change settings. C4 is single point, 1/250 sec single frame for precision. The grip works better in that I don't trigger as many bum shots as I did on my mk2. I just want my free spare battery. Sometimes the camera amazes me with in focus shots of ducks flying past me and I hardly had time to pick up and aim and the ducks are in focus. And I always shoot with the 100-400 at 400. Rolling shutter doesn't seem to be an issue. But don't let anyone kid you. It is not perfect and you have to learn it's foibles. I have lots of out of focus shots to prove that.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  2 года назад

      I had to wait a little while to get my free spare battery. Hopefully yours will arrive soon.
      It seems that bird / cats & dog detection can detect a wide range of animals, not just what the manual describes. Next time they improve the algorithm with a firmware update, they should put everything into one category.

    Excellent summary. I have built a complex spread sheet which shows every setting and every button assignment possibility for each of the different shooting scenarios/missions I might undertake. (It is color coded to differentiate from default settings and to highlight certain critical actions. ... but what I like best about it is that I can see which configurations I've stored in the various C modes and which I don't have stored but which I must change if I want to shift photography projects.) I've used many of your suggestions for some of my configuration options --- but I also have some that I prefer instead of yours. Nevertheless, your effort to make the video is much appreciated. @ryantang8146 2 года назад

    I really do hope that OMDS will eventually work on the continuous af tracking and make it works like the Canon, Nikon and Sony where once it tracks, it sticks and glue to the subject and won’t jump off. The Bird Af works great at initial recognizing the target but it jumps where other birds get too close. It still works great but this is not the case with the human face and eye detection. If you do sport, you can’t rely on its face and eye detection because it will jump to other targets too easily while other brands like Sony and Canon will usually just stick to the one you track. Just hope they will eventually make it works.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  2 года назад +1

      With Bird AF, try to use a smaller AF Target if it jumps to other birds too often.

    I have just taken delivery of my OM-1 and the only thing that irritates me is the bulky charging lead. Whilst it is useful to be able to charge the camera in the field via a battery pack I don’t want to cart the charging lead round with me in addition to all the other paraphernalia. Am I right in assuming the camera can be charged from a normal USB mains socket with a suitable USB to USB-C cord?

      Hi Jeff, I haven't tried it personally, but I can't think of any reason why the USB mains socket would not work.

    Great videos. Is it possible to assign an existing custom mode to the Lens-FN button, and call this mode in one press? I would like to quickly switch (from whatever still mode, M, or any C -but C2- mode) via one button (the Lens-FN assigned button) containing C2 customized for Procapture. For example, I assigned the Lens-FN button, in C3 (slow, not moving much mode) mode to C2 (Procapture), this saves well (@ least it displays "C2 on/off" - but does this only work within C2?) under C3. However, when I am in C3 mode, pressing the Lens-FN button does nothing visible, and not the expected call of C2. Is what I am trying not possible? Or am I implementing it wrongly? Any solutions / alternative suggestions to achieve my goal?

      Hmm, if I understand correctly what you are asking, I don't think it's possible, or at least I couldn't find a way to do it on mine. You can assign C1-C4 to the lens Fn button, but you can only recall it when the main dial is on one of the P-A-S-M positions. If the dial is on C1, C2, C3, or C4, nothing will happen when you press the lens button.
      probably the best alternative is to assign the custom modes to different buttons, like C1 on the lens for example, and C2 somewhere on the button.

    Hi Mathieu Thank you for this excellent video. I have used your customised settings for motorsports successfully. However, I did experience problems initially. The exposure compensation appeared to have a life of its own often often over exposing images by increasing compensation. I was continually adjusting it but to ensure the images were exposed correctly. Have I set up incorrectly? Usually when I set up in manual mode the shutter speed/iso etc changes. I have never seen exposure compensation change like this. Have I missed something.?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  2 года назад

      Hmm, so you were in full manual mode (aperture, shutter speed and ISO)? If that’s the case, perhaps you had the S-OVF option enabled in the EVF and for some reason it was adding too much brightness? Were the actual photos overexposed?

    • @hemlockwood
      @hemlockwood 2 года назад

      @@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Thanks for responding Mathieu. I have not enabled the S-OVF. On the super control panel shutter speed and aperture are are in green and do not change when composing an image. However, underneath the exposure compensation is constantly flashing it is in effect telling me if I am under/over exposed. I have to adjust either aperture or shutter speed to get the correct exposure. It very fiddly when you are taking action shots. Is it meant to work like this?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons

      It can change on a regular basis depending on the the light and contrast in your scene. It also depends what kind of metering setting you use. A smaller area like Spot can react more to any change because the area measured is small (for example if one rider wears a white suit, but the next wears black, Spot metering can measure a completely different exposure).

    Is this camera the most complex ever to set up?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  2 года назад +1

      Certainly one of the most complex to setup, especially if you compare it to Sony cameras. Canon also has a lot of AF settings that are not easy to understand at first, but even with the default values, models such as the R6 and R5 give good results already.

    Having trouble when I assign function button to bird detection, then shut off with button it wouldn’t let me have face detection on. Also when you say large focus area, is that same as “all”?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  2 года назад +1

      Is Face & Eye Detection on?
      1. Disable Subject Detection (Bird)
      2. Turn Face & Eye Detect on
      3. Use the function button to activate and deactivate Subject Detection. Face & Eye should activate/deactivate automatically.
      Large focus area = Large Target
