Ljubica Maric: Cantata 'Songs of Space' for mixed choir and orchestra (1956)

Ljubica Maric was one of the most important female composers in former Yugoslavia. Born in Serbia in 1909, he lost her father to the Balkan Wars and became traumatized with the sound of bugles at his funeral. Instead of denying herself to music, she harnessed this trauma and became an accomplished violinist and composer early in the 1920’s, later being accepted by none other than Josef Suk in Prague, where she also became conductor; quite an accomplishment for a woman those days (and still is!). During World War II and in the early years of Tito’s regime, she composed virtually nothing, and explored ancient Serbian music and Orthodox chant. This would eventually lead her to set some ancient Bogomil epitaphs to music in her cantata Songs of Space, which represents a spiritual meditation about life, death and the space - in other words, the universe - that surrounds us.
Ljubica Maric fue una de las compositoras más importantes de la antigua Yugoslavia. Nacida en Serbia en 1909, perdió a su padre durante las Guerras de los Balcanes y quedo traumada por el sonido de las trompetas en su funeral. No obstante, en vez de negarse a la música, logró canalizar su trauma y se volvió una violinista y compositora talentosa en los años 20, siendo aceptada más tarde ni más ni menos que por Josef Suk en Praga; lugar en el que también fue directora de orquesta, siendo este un gran logro para una mujer en aquellos días (¡y aún lo es!). Durante la 2GM y los primeros años del régimen de Tito, Maric compuso casi nada y se dedicó a explorar la música antigua de los serbios y el canto ortodoxo. Esto la llevaría eventualmente a musicalizar antiguos textos de los epitafios bogomilos a su cantata Canciones del Espacio, la cual representa una meditación espiritual sobre la vida, la muerte y el espacio - dicho sea el universo - que nos rodea.
