Great video. We were just playing around with this exact concept last at Muay Thai class. Except for the shooting. We were having fun pairing this with a knee to the midsection. When you slap your adversary’s hands down, he instantly and automatically brings them back up to guard position. As his hands start going back up, your knee is already on its way!

My TKD Master taught us a version of this but instead of trapping or pulling the guard down, you're making physical contact with your opponents front hand, which creates a very small window of opportunity while your opponent registers the contact and adjusts. It was used as a distraction in TKD point fighting but is directly related to this.

Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon against Bob Wall showed that a punch can initially block an opponent's lead hand/arm and then continue as a strike. One movement. With both hands back-to-back, you can see Bruce whip outward slightly to move the lead arm and then graft it into a thrusting straight punch. No need to recoil even the slightest. In a left to right stance, you can hammer forearm to forearm and graft into a thrusting straight punch, almost like bouncing off his forearm. I've done it many times sparring in class. Gliding across his forearm as you continue the straight punch gives you a feel for where his arm is and where it might be going rather than just smashing it out of the way. It's very fast but very effective.

JKD was made for street primarily and they didn’t condone following the opponent to the ground, with that being said you could imagine how a lot of dirty tactics would be used to stop a wrestler. Bruce also intended for a fight to be over in 30 seconds or less; he said if it went longer than that you lose. So you can see in this style we’re not looking to sprawl and look for submissions. Anyways if you’re wanting to be better prepared for the possibility of you being grabbed there’s videos on Jiu Jitsu for self defense and things of that sort. Bruce always said to absorb what is useful.

its always beneficial to feel how your body wants to move so you can develop the circular intuition he was displaying, which is also known as the channeling force or the ground reactive force in jeet kune do. The one inch punch utilizes smaller efficient circular planes of motion to converge onto a focused point, whenever the one inch punch is shown you see a full chain of kinetic motion from the feet punching on the beat to the target, which is why he was showing the beat training. Rhythm training is integral to unlocking ground reaction force, since kinetic energy has its own intuition which we must mold our speed and athleticism after and not seek to control energy statically and restrictively. Thus we unlock ground reactivity and perfected timing to instinctively understand when all strikes are occurring versus when movement becomes a consideration before strikes open themselves up, allowing for minimal self consciousness in the midst of battle

Love the technique but using it real time during MMA competition is tough as most fighters rarely remain in the trapping range long enough for you to pull off the technique. Most close the gap from punching or kicking range to clinching or grappling range, skipping past the hand trapping. Depending on your reach the higher percentage shot will be a jab, cross, hook, elbow or knee. This trapping technique/hard parry to percussion or take down could be more effective in countering stand up aggression out of competition. Typically, someone who is drunk or underestimates your ability doesn’t think about distance or range - they sometimes freely enter into your trapping range feeling they are not in any danger. The inside parrying with your hands out in front during competition is difficult enough with smaller gloves - an outside parry or one hand high guard and slip is easier as you can simultaneously counter with either a hook or a short cross at that range.

Trapping in its essence the ability to move through your opponents guard with sensitivity and the understanding of weight distribution. After understanding the drills and sensitivity applications. You pressure test it with actual hard foward pressure. The most reliable form of training this is going to be with Jesse clovers ncgf. Saying theres no trapping range is a bit if a stretch. Grabling range is traping range with a different skill implemented into it. Trapping skills or at least the sensitivity training aspect of it can set up better judo throw opportunities and other takedowns in general. Most trapping skills require loose shoulder and abdomen mobility and movement fluidity to be effective. Knowing how to move kinetic energy through out the body through a nimble and loose body is very effective at cloee range. There more to it then the trapping drills we see.

Also, if that were true, if the aim was ALWAYS to hit first, then that would entail that Wing Chun has zero defense, which would make it a bad martial art. Sometimes you need to defend yourself instead of attack, that's just how fighting works.

As Two of my JKD teachers who were Bruce's students in China town said; "Bruce called what he taught us JKD." It wasn't amorphous, it wasn't nebulous. Yes sure you have to parry sometimes, or cover or block. But not as your first move. Hitting is always paramount. If you don't understand that , than you don't understand JKD.

Don't you realize, you are making a qualification on JKD by telling me I'm wrong?! But despite your self defeating hypocritical comment, my bona fides are having studied with Two Bruce Lee students for 16 vears, one of which spent Sundays also training at Bruce's house on Sundays for years and was named the "ass kicker of China Town," By Dan Inosanto because he was the one Bruce had spar all comers. In addition, My other older teacher was one of the Dan's backyard students, Whom Dan had teach JKD at seminars all over the world for years for him. So I think I know what the hell I'm talking about. So that's what makes me have a better understanding of what JKD is or isn't than most people out there. And when i see bull crap being called JKD, I will call it bull crap. It may be a decent technique, but that doesn't make it JKD. The first rule of JKD is no passive moves. Always be hitting. Going for a passive move when you can hit, is the opposite of JKD.

Bruce Lee's instruction in WC extended to being an intermediate with the 1st form material. He never demonstrated much in the way of trapping competency. What he should be known for instead is for mixing. He was far ahead of his time in the late 1960s. Who can even know how long it would have taken for mixing to become popular if not for him?
WC forms function as a dictionary, not a cookbook or recipes and combinations the way Kenpo and Karate forms are structured. The WC sequences could have been arrayed in any ergonomic order and it wouldn't make any difference to how a fighter under that instruction would learn to use the individual elements. The main reason to practice them at all is to focus on the precision and structure of the positions themselves (precision comes first). Same with Chi-Sao; it's merely a training platform to safely put combinations together and practice them with a training partner. It's not a form of sparring and it won't teach anyone how to actually fight.
If anyone has any interest in adding elements of WC to their MMA game they should just stick to the 1st/2nd form material and link up with an actual WC instructor to learn those positions. Maybe spend a few months at it to get the basics, and then move on. (maintain those structures by practicing them, though). In addition to his other training in other styles, Bruce Lee got a LOT of mileage out of a very limited amount of 1st form competency. I think he'd have done even better - as a mixer - if he could have made it through to the 2nd form material. If you adapted your boxing to a centerline orientation and a vertical fist that's going to change things in both your offense and defense. Not as powerful with the punch, but way safer on your hand and in defending your midsection, plus it enables some trapping.
If a ring fighter is on point with 1st/2nd form structure and precision they will never put themselves into needing anything from the 3rd form. Most of the ring sports don't allow overhead elbows or attacking the eyes or throat anyway. When this instructor is saying "smaller, smaller" in the vid that is actually a great example about focusing on the basic structure and precision rather than trying to compensate with speed and strength.
FYI, Non-WC practitioners virtually always have poor form WRT their WC elements and frequently devolve into strength/strength variants. If you ever see someone banging on a WC dummy, that's not the instruction: except for the chain punch defense in the beginning the rest of the instruction is mostly about constantly sticking to those contacts as you cross into and out of and across their centerline. Banging looks good on film but the problem with that is you have to re-establish contact every time you break it, which that's the hard part.

Bruce moved away from wing chun, took trapping and chi sao out the curriculum in 1971, started phasing it out himself by 1968.
He was also very good at trapping, and knew more than the 1st form.
Please don’t spread misinformation. There is already enough of that in regard to Bruce Lee.
JKD primarily considers of fencing and boxing mechanics, not wing chun.
It’s all in his day-timers and workout logs. There is no mention of practicing anything wing chun from the 70’s.
It’s important to remember Bruce found more effective and streamlined methods.
Wind chun was important as a starting point, but late stage JKD removed it completely.
For context, this is how he actually trained and what he was doing.
