malaysia used to have an empire called the johor empire covering present day lands of malaysia, singapore, indonesia, timor leste, brunei and the philippines. historical city melaka and later johor baharu the southern gateway were the two most famous capitals of that empire. the empire ended when the british colonised it in the 1800s, and they took control of the vassal states of johor first, and finally johor state itself. britain made malaysia a federation of 13 colonies/protectorates, meaning johor and its 12 vassals. independence came in 1957 for 11 states in west malaysia, and again for sarawak and sabah that is east malaysia on borneo island in 1963.
