  • In the mid-1450s, Pope Nicholas V issued a series of papal bulls authorizing Christian monarchs to conquer and take possession of lands inhabited by non-Christians. What came to be called the doctrine of discovery became a principle of international law that justified European expansion throughout the world. A three-part series will examine this doctrine as the religious and legal basis for the colonization of the Americas and other parts of the world, as well as New World slavery. In this session, the Reverend Aric Clark will discuss current efforts by churches to address and dismantle the Doctrine.
