    Based on your recommendations, I got The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm, A Star is Born and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. And you’re right. They looked fantastic!

    Top dollar stuff. You never fail in your pursuit of a detailed review on each disc. I can sit back and learn something about the film, its restoration and how well the film looks on physical. I've just ordered a copy of A Star is Born on Warner Archive. Time to enjoy a recommendation from a great reviewer on YT. Keep em comin for many more years to come.

    You had me at the poignancy of your tribute to Mike Hodges. Well played sir, well played. Th
    This was worth the wait. If we can't trust a Spencer review, what's the world come to?

    This is my kind of awards show. I wasn't sure if i would like the Hammer Robin Hoods but your glowing recommendation convinced me to order that set posthaste (also the limited set of "The Swimmer)). 🙂

    Nice to see Croupier get a mention! Definitely a surprise to see on UHD, but it’s an excellent disc and an equally awesome movie.

    Great picks as usual, Spencer. I gotta say I'm intrigued by CROUPIER. My brother always used to say he thought Clive Owen would've made a great Bond, and after having seen the cover art for the Arrow release, I totally get it. The Hodges doc looks like a great extra. I did get the BFI GET CARTER set based on your recommendation and I haven't dug into it yet but it looks fantastic.

      I saw the Croupier poster as a kid and thought: this guy has such charisma even in this photo and I need to see this. It came and went in a flash and I didn't get to see until I found the video editions years later in one of the many crappy editions but still fell in love with it.

    Yes, the Columbia 4K sets , in my eyes, are a steal even at their initial price of around 120 Euros. They always go down to 70-80 Euro eventually. Because i'm ususally more of a fan of single releases, i missed out on Volume 1. But since it takes ages before Columbia releases the movies as single releases (and some not at all as of yet) i pulled the trigger on Volumes 2 and 3. I also managed to get my hands on a used Volume 1 for 125 Euros a short while ago. The slipboxes that house the discs had become unstuck from the rest of the box which was easily remedied with a bit of glue.

    I like your sensibilities! I ordered most of these from you recommendations. I don’t have a region free player so not the indicator releases. The only one I’m ashamed I don’t have yet is Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. That and Batman ‘89 where the first VHS I got as a kid and started my love of collecting movies.

    • @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
      @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader  Год назад +1

      Thanks! Region free players are really cheap these days so give it a try sometime. Also a lot of UHD players are region free with remote button codes.

    Absolutely enjoyable episode, Spencer! You are so spot on in your analysis of the 2022 physical releases . Funny enough, my top 3 also mirrored yours although I had INVADERS as my #1 and GRIMM as my #2. We are so lucky as cinephiles and collectors to be living at the time we do. 2022 was such a remarkable year for physical media!

    Just curious, did you check out the blu-ray of Croupier? I was considering grabbing the 4K, but the blu is about half the price due to a sale. Wondering if the difference is that major.

    • @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
      @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader  Год назад

      I’m working on my UHD review and even though I haven’t seen the BD I can certainly tell you the difference would be major.
      The UHD has a lovely Dolby vision grade on top of everything and I don’t see how the 1080p sdr could compete.

    The red paper was a nice touch. Maybe for 2023 awards you can go one better and use stop motion animation for the disc cases. 🤣

    Thank you for the Jekyll and Hyde 1931 recommendation. I had only seen clips and was skeptical as to whether the film was any good. I had assumed that the Tracy 1941 version was the only version worth owning. After watching it in it's entirety, it is now obvious to me that the March version is superior and the definitive Jekyll and Hyde.

    • @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
      @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader  Год назад

      If you’re going down the rabbit hole of the various Jekyll films, I’d also recommend taking a look at the two Hammer attempts that are wildly different from each other, but each have positives to them.

    Love your content. I've been watching for a couple of years. How do you "capture" commentaries? Is this something that can be done without too much effort/knowledge? Would love to see a video about how you do this. Apologies if this has been asked or explained before.

    • @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
      @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader  Год назад +1

      I discussed it some in my video on how I make reviews. DVDs are pretty easy with the DVD audio extractor program. Blu-ray is a bit more difficult as you have to use MakeMKV as if you were going to add a film to a digital home media server then use eac3to to extract the commentary file and then convert it to another format if desired.
      Laserdisc is a straight analog capture via usb capture device and ironically I have to capture UHD tracks this way as well because I don't have the ability to work with them like I do with BDs as of yet.

    Can you let me know which version of Scooby-Doo Where are you is best to own? I heard you mention the blu-ray has issues, but not which is best. Thanks

    • @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
      @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader  Год назад +1

      It's tough because the DVD masters are super old and had alchemist interlacing (meaning you'll see combing line artifacts on modern displays) and the new HD source scans were great but WB DNRd them and made crappy low bitrate single layer BDs. Some streaming sites got slightly better less DNRd versions of the new scan but its hit or miss. The scans should've been handled by Warner Archive who would've made a beautiful BD release form the same source like their other Hanna Barbera titles.

    How come the new 4K UHD of Casablanca did not make the list? I thought it was a great 4K UHD Blu-Ray remaster from Warner Bros.
