- On July 12th 1985 the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad ran it's last passenger train.
This video is the coverage of the event from the three major Pittsburgh TV stations, KDKA, WTAE and WPXI. Coverage is form the 6 and 11 PM Newscasts.
In 1985 the last run of the commuter train and just a short 8 years later the railroad would become part of CSX. How times have changed. Even the station at College this train once served was burned to the ground just a few years ago by vandals. Thank you mspysu79 for posting this video.
Burned on purpose by Geneva College..been inside was full of old accidents records
A young Stacey Abrams, to boot. Thanks for splicing together all the local news reports on this historic but sad moment.
A single GP7 couldn't pull a massive load like Stacey Abrams. It would take a minimum of 5 SD7s to do that job.
In thinking more like 5 SD70's!
Sad to say , I never saw any of the news stations showing any of this footage . I grew up right next to the tracks in Coraopolis . I think about P&LE once in awhile .
PLE COMMUTER was non subsidized private service and B&O Pat train to Connellsville PA was manned by BO crews but subsidized by PAT under contract.
PATrain went as far East as Versailles pa.
Only 4.40 to get to Beaver Falls that's expensive?
Today that sounds inexpensive but In 1985, it was expensive. You could ride the Pat Bus from Ambridge to Pittsburgh for around $1.75 one way. Also in 1985 a gallon of Gas was around $1.60 a gallon.
That's like paying $11 one-way today.
@@JoseTwitterFan Gas and Parking and car payments sure...back then there were still one car one income families. Hubby would spend day at office and wifey would spend his money shopping in family one car and being soccer mom...now both work making half money that dad made in 1976 inflation adjusted to 2020.
@@RWSBaden you can ride a Pat Bus from Pittsbrugh to Aimbridge today for 2.25. It's the 1 line.
Hello. I am making a short documentary about the last run P&LE passenger service and would like to use this uploaded footage in it.
Was this service part of the PAT service, or was a different line?
Separate as non subsidized private operation of PLE Railroad. PLE lost about 100,000.00 a year but did not mind because because its own workers and steel executive customers used the service to commute from Upscale Beaver PA. As the steel industry died so did the reason for PLE to exist let alone having a loss leader on their books. However CSX bought the line as a more direct line thru Pittsburgh in 1996 then the roundabout line thru Mars PA.
