Ah, 70s AM bliss. 1977 was a good year for music. My folks mainly listened to AM radio back then, so I heard this song a lot when it was released. Star Wars was all the rage, disco was all over the airwaves, and there was a lot of great albums and singles released in the rock realm.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980, I remember that version. I had just turned 10 when "Star Wars - A New Hope" came out, the perfect age for a kid to watch that movie. I loved the soundstrack and still have the original release of the soundtrack on vinyl somewhere.
Let me tell you why this song is so great. First, the beginning is captivating. The casual bass beat backed by the crisp drum rhythm immediately catches your attention, and you know the song is going somewhere. Then the melodic guitar riff plays, and it’s pure 70s magic. Lots of tremolo on a dreamy phrase that only adds to the building suspense. The story unfolds, and we learn of the devastating heartbreak that has occurred. We’ve all been there and instantly have compassion, sympathy, and hope that the woman comes back…but we never know for sure. The vocal harmonies are sheer joy, and Beckett’s shattered soul begs for his lost love in a way that makes us feel his anguish like our own. His agony is almost palpable, and his honesty-admitting wearing a “mask of false bravado” until the sun goes down and he gets that “empty feelin’ again” brings a tear to the eye. We feel your pain brother. We’re sorry. We know it’s just awful. The bridge somehow expresses a sensation of hopeful rebirth or reunion, with the dynamic keyboard notes soaring through a major tonality leading to the epic pause before the final, heart-rending choruses. Just a masterpiece on all levels-musical, artistic, lyrical, spiritual. I was 13 when this song ruled the airways. It crushed me when I went through an adolescent break up with my girlfriend-cut to the bone. In fact, it was so impactful, I couldn’t listen to it for a long time. Now, it brings a bittersweet nostalgia of the late 70s, junior high school, first girlfriends, and the unpredictable paths of love. It remains one of the greatest songs of the era. It’s society’s loss that no one makes ‘em like this anymore.
When I was a kid my dad played adult contemporary radio in the car. I remembered hearing all the greatest hits of the 70's and early 80's. This was a great song with some even greater riffs. I must admit that I was disappointed when punk, and synthetic rock came out.
The harmonies really make this song stand out. Was a big song when I was in high school in the late 70's. Also, Toby Beau's "Angel Baby" was big at this time.
Oh Adam! This was such a great interview, we would all throw our bras at you both! You ask great things, and Peter adds great things, it is as good an interview as this song is powerful. I admit to even today cranking up the radio in the car all the way the moment I hear the first notes. Remarkable!
In the same way that the 80s doesn't exist without Everybody Wants to Rule the World / Tears for Fears, the 70s don't exist without Baby Come Back. I was 10 years old when this song came out... I had a girlfriend at the time (I mean, come on, it was the 70's - every 10 year old was actually 20 years old) and this girl was the light of my life, one of the most beautiful girls in school - both inside and out. I remember hearing this song late at night (I would go to sleep listening to the radio) and it made me imagine (against my will) a time when we might no longer be together - and it absolutely tore a hole through me. It broke me. I remember tearing up hearing this song. I could feel every word. I could not imagine life without her and how much I would miss her. Then one day, it wasn't my imagination... we just drifted away from each other and 46 years later there is still a scar there. Music is so powerful. What a fantastic song. Thank you again, Adam.
January 78, senior year of high school, Jr. & Sr. Prom, the DJ played that song many times throughout the evening! I was there with the one who would become my wife and here we are quickly growing old together all these years later!
I really like this song. I have been in the car with my family with this song playing. We we all singing along, "Baby Come Back "! A perfect song for a road trip trip playlist 😊.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Hi Lilly 👋. Tonight is the Sqeeze and Phychedelic Furs concert. I have to leave at a little early to get to the airport. Going to Colorado for the John Denver celebration. I can't believe it is finally here.
One of my favorite songs. Had a girl break my heart my senior year in High School (1987) & I remember buying this record & crying my eyes out listening to it. The song never gets old for me.
Nice fellow, Peter Becket and he's aged well, too. Player had the right sound at the right time with this song, and it still sounds great. The solo at the end was well put together, too. Shame that they cut if off for radio play. Ace, Player, Orleans, Ambrosia and other similar bands seemed to rule the airwaves back in those days. Thanks, Adam!
It's always fun guessing POR's thumbnails correctly 🎉 Baby Come Back is one of my all time favorites. I always thought it was Chicago that performed it until recently.
I know that story so well ! I lived at the drummers house through it all ! He sold the house to the keyboardist and it became an amazing infamous recording studio where a lot of great records were recorded over the years. And I did the intern becomes engineer becomes producer steps there. Actually Jeff Porcaro loved to cut tracks there over the years by as well !
Great episode as always, Professor! Always loved this song.....can play it 20 times in a row. One of the best parts of the song are the solos--Peter's solos in this really just hit home in a big way, and the feel and control of it are outstanding. I've maintained this for a while, but I think that Aldo Nova was highly inspired by this song to write "Ball And Chain".......the ascending chromatic riff seems to be a direct influence. :)
@@ProfessorofRockAt a record store in Ohio. They did that a lot with older songs. In the early 2000's, I actually found a CD single with BOTH "18 And Life" and "I Remember You" by Skid Row. I still have it.
This song brings back the best memories. Peter is such a lovely guy, wonderful conversation. Really appreciate the technical aspects & breakdown in such an interesting interview. Made me want to see you and Rick Beato collaborate.
I DJ events, weddings, etc, and have a “Soft 70’s” playlist I love to spin w/ Dancing in the Moonlight (King Harvest), Fireball’s You are the Woman, Reminiscing (Little River Band), Boz Skaggs Lido Shuffle and Dirty lowdown, How Much I Feel, You’re the Biggest Part of Me and You’re the Only Woman by Ambrosia, Sister Golden Hair & others by America…I could go on. All great songs that have a certain feel that just works together.
"Baby Come Back" was definitely one of the gems I heard when I was so high in the early 80s. My favorite pop culture placement up to 2023 is its placement in Transformers (2007) when Shia LaBeouf is trying to romance Megan Fox with Bumblebee pumping out tunes from his dashboard. Nifty hearing Peter talk about how Player had been on tour with Gino Vannelli. That's like a hand in a glove.
That's one of the reasons I couldn't have asked for a better set of parents, @@ProfessorofRock. If the first rule of thumb in our household was that everybody pulled their weight and did all they could to behave themselves, the second rule was - music. It was awesome having both the music of the moment and the music in our Personal Collection at your fingertips. We also had great friends (teaching colleagues of my parents) who gave us a lot of the killer material we had. We occasionally switched between *Symphony No. 5,* Neil Diamond's *Jazz Singer* soundtrack and *Toto IV.* Bliss!
😂 me and my husband will playfully sing that line if the other was walking away & you have something else to say. I started it years ago and we both laughed because it was unexpected. 😂 it broke the tension because we had been arguing.
My Girlfriend broke up with me in 1979 and I played this song for over a month all day long. My family was sick of it by the time I stopped playing constantly. I still listen to it at least once a week. Favorite song of all!!!!
I have the 45 of this song and the B side was a song called "Love Is Where You Find It" which had a funcky disco sax fill. I don't know why I never got the album I'm sure they have other good songs as well.
Chills. Man, this takes me back. So much learned, gained, lost between then and now. Funny how songs trigger memories and the emotions from when they played in our lives…
Another great song from the fantastic year of '78*. *Released in October of '77, but didn't explode on the radio and charts until January of '78. Was a huge part of '78.
I got to see Player live at the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts here in Vegas when they were opening for Bread in 1978. Great show all around, but even the people who came to see Bread were in no hurry for Player to finish their set. Great live band.👍✌️
My entire record collection (original vinyl purchased when they were released) includes what is now termed "Yacht Rock". I love that the music is still going strong and creating new fans among the younger generations! ♥
As a kid growing up the only thing I had to listen to was a small AM clock radio in my room. Loved to listen to all these songs and groups. My favorite song is Baker St. by Gerry Rafferty.
I loved this song when it was released, still love it today. All the talent we had before autotune & pitch correction needs to be heard. Music is art truly from the heart. 🌹❤️
POR you keep hitting the right chords. Baby Come Back is definitely part of our lexicon whenever it is appropriate. One of those fav when pops on the radio. Very much in the vane of Hall and Oates She's Gone; feeling that loss. From a 70s kid always a good listen.
About a month ago I was remembering songs from my past where I had purchased an album because of one song and that was pretty much the only song that charted, when I remembered my Player album with Baby Come Back on it. So I brought the song’s video up and was floored by how good the video was and how good the song was to the point where I became pretty much obsessed with it, and began looking for anything, and everything relating to it, playing concert videos from back in the day through now, watching interviews with Peter Beckett, who co-wrote the sing and sings it, and even looking into yacht rock, which is a relatively new genre, etc. And next thing you know, Professor of Rock has this interview with Peter! So glad to see Peter still doing well and still out there doing concerts and supporting the song! Good stuff!
One of your better interviews, your an artist of greater caliber than many/any could be, it is as if your pulling out those favorite collectables and dusting them off while keeping each as good as it were coming right out of its package!
This sure brought back some good memories! The first time I heard this song I was over playing at a friends house while her Mom was cooking in the kitchen with the radio on. My friend and I stopped playing and went to the kitchen to listen to it! The song was and is magic!
Poll: What is your pick for the SMOOTHEST song of all time?

@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980, I remember that version. I had just turned 10 when "Star Wars - A New Hope" came out, the perfect age for a kid to watch that movie. I loved the soundstrack and still have the original release of the soundtrack on vinyl somewhere.
@@gregwasserman2635 The Star Wars theme is one of the greatest ever, so we all would enjoy it.
Did you like new wave?
The harmonies really make this song stand out. Was a big song when I was in high school in the late 70's. Also, Toby Beau's "Angel Baby" was big at this time.
I like the Rosie and the Originals original version.
Oh Adam! This was such a great interview, we would all throw our bras at you both! You ask great things, and Peter adds great things, it is as good an interview as this song is powerful. I admit to even today cranking up the radio in the car all the way the moment I hear the first notes. Remarkable!
One of the songs that has always brought me right back to my youth every time I hear it!! Thanks Adam, as always, for the memories….❤
The Professor asks the best questions in his interviews....one of the best music interviewers ever.
I’m graduating in 2024. I should request this song at prom.
I really like this song. I have been in the car with my family with this song playing. We we all singing along, "Baby Come Back "!
A perfect song for a road trip trip playlist 😊.
Thanks for sharing such a great memory Catherine!
It’s a good one to put on a sailing playlist as well.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Hi Lilly 👋. Tonight is the Sqeeze and Phychedelic Furs concert. I have to leave at a little early to get to the airport. Going to Colorado for the John Denver celebration. I can't believe it is finally here.
@@catherine6653 OOH! Tell me how it is. That lineup is rad!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I will post some pictures on my community page tomorrow.
I love how the professor has such joy for the music in all of these episodes.
Oh yeah, this was smooth. Ambrosias “How much I feel” was smooth. The build up crescendo and back to a slow rhythm was incredible.
So true!
I love How Much I Feel.
I love this song! A classic clean song with excellent vocals and a melancholy vibe.
It's awesome that they were so excited when they debuted at #80 on the billboard hot 100!
No joke!
It warms my heart.
"...and it was big too..." What a guy! I love this song. Great interview as always.
One of my favorite songs. Had a girl break my heart my senior year in High School (1987) & I remember buying this record & crying my eyes out listening to it. The song never gets old for me.
One of the best songs ever written and recorded. Is probably my favorite song ever.
THanks Robster! I will hit you back on Patreon! I've been slammed lately!
The 4 bands you list here are the perfect representation of our youth and bring those days back so clearly the past becomes tangible!!!
There was a high demand for smooth yacht rock! 🛥️
I hope peter becket got rich a little bit
❤❤
This Time I'm In It For Love is just as good a tune as Baby... I met Peter when he was playing with Little River Band back in '98. good guy.
That was a great interview Professor! Love the behind the scenes!🤘🔥
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is my favorite song from the 70's. Such a good interview.
Love these interviews
Thanks bro
I found a cassette single of this song in the early 90's, and I used to blast this song while driving through the neighborhood. 😎👍
Where'd you find it?
@@ProfessorofRockAt a record store in Ohio. They did that a lot with older songs. In the early 2000's, I actually found a CD single with BOTH "18 And Life" and "I Remember You" by Skid Row. I still have it.
Where?
You can’t stop singing along. Loved ELO, part of anyone in middle school, high school, such good times.
Eric, you are a knowledgeable dude! Where'd your love for music come from?
That's one of the reasons I couldn't have asked for a better set of parents, @@ProfessorofRock. If the first rule of thumb in our household was that everybody pulled their weight and did all they could to behave themselves, the second rule was - music. It was awesome having both the music of the moment and the music in our Personal Collection at your fingertips. We also had great friends (teaching colleagues of my parents) who gave us a lot of the killer material we had. We occasionally switched between *Symphony No. 5,* Neil Diamond's *Jazz Singer* soundtrack and *Toto IV.* Bliss!
Player, Gino Vannelli, and Ambrosia go hand in hand.
I have been playing for43 years, and the guitar solo on the album version of this is still my absolute top favorite.
😂 me and my husband will playfully sing that line if the other was walking away & you have something else to say. I started it years ago and we both laughed because it was unexpected. 😂 it broke the tension because we had been arguing.
Ha!
Haha, my mom does that sometimes!
My Girlfriend broke up with me in 1979 and I played this song for over a month all day long. My family was sick of it by the time I stopped playing constantly. I still listen to it at least once a week. Favorite song of all!!!!
This song is sheer perfection!! And yes, it is on my yacht rock playlist. 😁
❤❤
Love this song. It came out when I was nine years old but remember singing along even then.❤
So cool! Great memories... What would you like to see next?
I have the 45 of this song and the B side was a song called "Love Is Where You Find It" which had a funcky disco sax fill. I don't know why I never got the album I'm sure they have other good songs as well.
Thanks!
I might have to listen to that one just for the sax 🎷
One of my top favorite songs of all times, since the day it came out on the radio back in ‘77, during my high school years. Awesome.
Wow
It’s sounds better at 60 than at 16…..
Love what you bring keep it up
Thanks! Will do! What would you like to see next?
Chills. Man, this takes me back. So much learned, gained, lost between then and now. Funny how songs trigger memories and the emotions from when they played in our lives…
I hope you were able to discuss ‘This Time I’m in it For Love’ - Player was always an underrated group.
Another great song for sure
I did indeed!
I'll try to post it to patreon!
Very Steely Dan like...and definitely Player's best song!
My favorite song by Player. Brings back great memories
Wow! How fascinating and so heartfelt in it's creation. Fabulous and beautiful classic! Thank you Professor for this amazing interview!❤
Another great song from the fantastic year of '78*.
*Released in October of '77, but didn't explode on the radio and charts until January of '78. Was a huge part of '78.
....right along the ZEITGEIST of the "Saturday Night Fever" onslaught, TOO! .....Strong tune, to hold up against THAT.....
That's right!
Good call
It hit #1 deservedly!
I got to see Player live at the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts here in Vegas when they were opening for Bread in 1978.
Great show all around, but even the people who came to see Bread were in no hurry for Player to finish their set.
Great live band.👍✌️
What a great concert that must have been!🎶🎵🎼
My entire record collection (original vinyl purchased when they were released) includes what is now termed "Yacht Rock". I love that the music is still going strong and creating new fans among the younger generations! ♥
As a kid growing up the only thing I had to listen to was a small AM clock radio in my room. Loved to listen to all these songs and groups. My favorite song is Baker St. by Gerry Rafferty.
Just decided to add this song to my “oldies” playlist. Love it. Great interview.
A selfie tee shirt 😊
My LORD I loved this song. I thoroughly enjoy and greatly appreciate this channel. Sometimes though, it makes me very sad.
Awesome interview! Well done.
I was blown away by this interview. Absolutely amazing, Professor.
This tune, Ace’s How Long?, and the Baby’s Isn’t it Time? Wow. Throw in some LRB Reminiscing and those summer nights in Myrtle Beach were the bomb.
That was a great interview, Adam! You really know your rock 'n roll. Such an iconic song, Baby Come Back.
A classic song from my childhood! I still listen to it every week! Thanks Professor awesome video and interview!
Great song and a great interview as always professor. Have a great day!
I loved this song when it was released, still love it today. All the talent we had before autotune & pitch correction needs to be heard. Music is art truly from the heart. 🌹❤️
Relaxing soft timeless great song. The chorus. The guitar Unique. Nice enterview
POR you keep hitting the right chords. Baby Come Back is definitely part of our lexicon whenever it is appropriate. One of those fav when pops on the radio. Very much in the vane of Hall and Oates She's Gone; feeling that loss. From a 70s kid always a good listen.
Great interview Professor 🤗
Looking great Mr Becket ❤ thank you for making fantastic music 🎶
Thanks for listening
@@ProfessorofRock Thank you for always making content that is worth listening to 😁
I love this song, and Everytime I see Ronn I just see him as Ridge, it's funny
Good stuff!
“ Music that doesn’t sound robotic “. Suns it all up.
Baby Come Back was on the radio every morning as we were bussed to school. Depressing.
"This Time I'm In IT For Love", is their great tune to me.
Love it, Love it, Love it, Thank you.
Still one of my favorites! Loved this interview, thank you. ❤
These songs are the real deal, Has all the feels and emotions that we went thru as young teens! I can't help but enjoy this Music!
