The first time I saw merengue danced was at Apollos 2000 in 1993 or so in Chicago, a dance club. I tried my hand dancing merengue myself learning what I read in the Fred Astaire Dance book that did cover the "merengue". One of the basic steps in the book is called the Side Chasse travelling Basic (and close up). But the basic of basics in merengue is the Basic in place - also known to me as the Compact Basic (similar to Compact Chasse in cha-cha but without the syncopations). You can do that in crowded dance clubs if you cannot do the side chasse due to scarcity of open dance floor space. Just wait for an opening to do that again, but if you cannot, you can rotate that Compact Basic in place to avoid boredom. I still love to merengue, and you should. Don't sit out a merengue--you will miss out on that Latin dance fun if you do. It is easier.
Les agradezco por haber hecho este video. Hay que mostrar un ejemplo a mis estudiantes, y este video es "G" -- seguro, sencillo, claro, bien hecho, "limpio"... Gracias.
@Alvar0zzki The men usually go with the left foot to the side, and the women go with their right foot to the side. But they can travel in any direction they wish!
I know that song! They played it in a club one night and I was the only one of my friends who got on the dance floor, doing my own thing and this Puerto Rican guy comes up to me and was like, "Dominicana?" and I'm like, "Naw baby, I'm black, I just love this music!" He said I looked really natural dancing to it and he led me in the merengue and I didn't even know it; I never took a class, just had a great partner that night :)
It´s interesting your work but I think you must teach each step with merengue music. I´m sure who are watching this video is going to thanks you. I´m saying a colombian person, you know, in Colombia It´s dancing a good merengue too.
Very beautiful Merengue. But it would be so courageous of Dominicans to give credits to Haiti where this dance was created and brought to Cuba by Haitians during the revolution time. And later Dominicans adopted Merengue to this day. It is time to admit the truth and stop spreading false information. Time to be honest and give the credits where they belong, to Haiti.

I wish there was one freaking video of learning the steps solo......
sorry, but it´s like the vienna waltz, at the beginning, but ok, if someone likes it, i rather have samba or rumba
Merengue is 100% a waltz.
