      I'm self reliant. Just not so reliant to also take care of my ex, because I already have to take care of my kids. Self reliance only works if you stay single or have a self reliant partner. I'm not ashamed to say my dad helps me out with 400 a month because of my ex. Other women aren't self reliant either. They have a man who gets money in.

    In the late 80s and early 90s when I was a kid, we were forced to watch life skill videos like this in school, and I think I was the only kid in class who was actually interested. The other kids would throw stuff at the video screen, call the actors nasty names, snicker to each other and pass notes about drugs and whatnot. I'm wondering if kids in the 50s just made fun of these videos too...while we sit here binge watching them on our phones! Lol

      I remember watching these in school, around 1961-62..around their. Our classes were good. No ruckus…giggling afterwards but not during. But I’m sure most learned, I know I did. My friends and I talked about it walking home. I liked them bc it made sense to me and did help as I grew into an adult

      @@DR--- It's true that people are interdependent. But kids still need to do the legwork and make their own decisions. When you wipe your kid's ass until he's 25, you get this current crop of Bernie Sanders supporters who want the government to pay for everything.
      Really, they should follow JFK's quote to ask what they can do for their country!

      @@DR--- You missed the whole point of the film. Self Reliance is just another way of saying take extreme ownership for your decisions. You can consult others, seek out all the info you need etc but at the end of the day your decisions are your decisions. A mentor can be of much help but a mentor is only as human as you and prone to error and can also give you bad advice. I have had mentors who i trusted to know better than me and got screwed for following their advice which made me realize at the end of the day i need to seek as much counsel from different sources but ultimately make my own decision to avoid making the excuse that someone else screwed me when they might want the best for me but just gave bad advice at the moment.

      @Mateo-et3wl 5 лет назад +6

      Why are people saying "kids"? The students in the film are clearly 17 and 18 year olds, not kids. And ten years earlier, before the concept of adolescence had been invented, they would have been expected to be married and into a career within a couple years. It's hardly too much to expect them to choose their own electives.

      @@Jesus6bcAgreed - there are no perfect parents. We all make bad decisions and mistakes - hopefully not ones so big that we played a massive role in screwing them up for life. It’s helpful to own where we did our kids wrong and apologize for our inequities. I would have a relationship with my Dad if he had done so - instead we were estranged until he died. Nobody is perfect and we can build a bridge back to our kids after we mess up - but it takes effort.

      This is one reason why we as a society are going so far off course.

    It's a shame that schools don't show these videos in elementary school to teach children about SELF RELIANT.
    It would help children so much.
    There would not be so many lazy, iliterate, sloppy, irresponsible, and not so bright human beings.
    Sadly, not all children have parents that teach their kids to be SELF RELIANT.

    Self reliance is contrary to todays self entitled and dependant society. When I turned 18 I voted for the first time as an independent. When I turned 30 I became a Republican, because I finally realized that I have always been self reliant, and the party always believed in self reliance.
    Actually, I do rely on someone, God Almighty, and that's it!
