    Mr. Coleridge would love the irony. As he said, "Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink. " You continue to impress, as a muti-talented, multi-tasking wonder: veterinary surgeon, mechanic, electrician, and plumber. You've got a lot of grit, and don't shy away from anything, no matter how tough or dirty. Wonder Woman.

    I’m a new subscriber to your channel. Thank you for all you’re doing for animals in need.
    I’ve been involved in the construction of boats most of my life. Your water tanks are heavily corroded and there just isn’t any good way to repair them. You might want to ask about to see if a bladder type lining could be installed as a temporary measure to hold you over a short while.
    A proper fix involves cutting the tanks from under the floor and having new ones fabricated. Not an inexpensive project.
    Since your health and well being are at risk please weigh all your options carefully.
    P.S. Make sure to sterilize the water lines leading to all fresh water taps as carefully as you are for the tanks.
    I hope fair winds fill your sails and may God always keep your keel wet.

    • @VetTails
      @VetTails  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks so much for the advice on both videos. I think both those projects are currently out of the budget, how ever since doing the tank clean and doing the lines (which I disconnected and did with a stronger chlorine solution since they are not aluminium) the water has been coming out clear as vodka and smells wonderful. I do filter water going in and coming to the tap with good quality carbon/charcol 5 micron filters too. The bladder option would involve cutting open the tanks as they have divides in them so unfortunately if I was going that far it'd be worthwhile just to do a proper installation. One day if I win the lottery perhaps! I appreciate the advice! Stay Chuffed

    You might need to put bladders in those tanks ......the corrosion looks worrying and you don't want to drink aluminum oxide.... lining the tanks with epoxy or something similar is fraught with its own difficulties like solvent traps problem painting or blasting is the access so I think bladders that you put in the tank would be a possibility.....you're doing a fantastic job with the animals and although it's none of my business I'm sad that you are having to do all the boat scene without a partner .... also a word of caution would be getting corrosion through the hull from inside the tanks as they are integral tanks (part of the hull) un gran abrazo

    Good stuff chuffed. I think that dodgy tank seal is letting in the stuff that accumulates in you bilge water into the tank. The aft tank top is letting in grit. Put a bladder in that tank and make sure the filling point is sealed higher than your bilge high level alarm point.
    Your tank needs a lot of more preservative work before you use it for drinking water.
    If you use a bladder super chlorinate it every 4 months and replace it every two years
    Cheers

    Wow. Looks like mud in the tanks, suspended clay that settled out of the water, though the gravely chips look suspiciously like the spalls from inside the tank. I imagine your inlet filters are activated carbon, that should reduce chlorine quite a bit. Big job. Nice big freshwater tanks though. It's a shame the tanks don't tolerate chlorine. Filtration and UV treatment could help the water at time of use so only chemical contamination would be of concern. On demand UV treatment isn't too much power. Of course UV needs cleaning and bulb replacement too, so you're trading one hassle for another.

    This episode caught my attention as I have two water tanks to clean and although they have some black blobs from the lost lagoon floating in them, they were in lots better shape than yours. So now I don't feel so intimidated. lol I'm using cleaners and sanitizers used in beer making (PBW and Star San). One is a mild acid, the other a non-toxic sanitizer. I don't have a big hole in the tanks to work with so hopefully the chemicals will do the work. Will also run this stuff through the system, but also plan to swap out the old hoses along the way. I'm going to start using a pre-filter that hooks to a hose (or funnel) and am adding a good filter in front of the pressure pump. Don't think I will ever have the guts to drink the water, but it should provide everything else I need, including cooking. I also want to add a fresh water option for the toilet. Thanks for the wonderful videos. They are real world and you do a great job of filming and explaining what you are doing along the way. Keep up the good work!

    Hi Dr Sheddy, it seems like the bottom of your water tanks is also the bottom of your boat. Please correct me if I am mistaken. Has anyone around there suggested an aluminum etch (acid) to slow down the erosion or corrosion of the surfaces inside the tanks? Do you think that paint or straight epoxy would even stick? No rush to answer, I'm sure you're busy. Having "some" experience with aluminum hulls and tanks, I know this is a tough problem to solve. I am amazed by how capable you are at dealing with whatever comes up. Thank You

    • @VetTails
      @VetTails  6 лет назад

      Hi Marty,
      Good question about using the aluminium etch... I dont know if that would help and no one has suggested it. you are correct that the tanks are built right on in to the hull, thankfully the alloy is very thick there! My other concern with epoxy paint is covering every last nook and cranny would be near impossible and then water could seep between the epoxy/alu and maybe cause more problems...
      Appreciate the advice though always good to trouble shoot!

    • @martyspargur5281
      @martyspargur5281 6 лет назад

      @@VetTails even with a hard oxide (like annodizing) in place on the surface, it needs oxygen to maintain that protection, which is not abundant in still water. Even then you are pretty much not able to control how much metal like copper etc is in your tap water. Wish I could come up with some sort of helpful advice Sheddy. The integrity of the hull is not really at stake because it's contained in the tank. Additionally, that part of the hull, replacing some outside plate, would be quite simple during a haulout.
      Yes, epoxy paint could be less than satisfactory. Thank You all You do.

    Impressive job cleaning the water tanks. Do you think most of the grunge was just sediment from the local water and biofilm slime? Or, as evidenced by the corrosion spots, was some of it aluminum oxide? Municipal water supply treatment plants often add zinc orthophosphate to help line pipes and reduce corrosion and leaching of metals into the water. Is there a similar option for protecting the aluminum water tanks? Also, I'm not aware of any, but have you run across any research evaluating if using chloramines as a disinfectant is more friendly for aluminum water tanks?

    • @VetTails
      @VetTails  6 лет назад

      I believe the chloramine is still a no no for alu tanks, I think a lot of the sediment was calcium build up, probably a bit of oxidation too and local sediment. But who knows when they were last cleaned!

  • @californiakayaker
    @californiakayaker 6 лет назад +7

    Water Changes are crucial. You could get Giardia. There might be some treatment, and that would be smart because your depending on remote places who may not have the best water filtering and sanitation equipment. I've had to depend on filters in many places because I couldn't depend on the water sources. That really works well, even works well for rain water from a gutter ! And, filtered rain water CAN be the best, it has a tendency to grow small celled organisms (because its so pure and nature loves it) but the bacteria are easy to kill, and organisms are easy to filter. Looking at that "mud" like substance, the color seems like the aluminum oxide color. They do put Zinc anodes inside water heaters so I wonder if a zinc oxide element once existed in there ?
    Also, I've decided to pass your channel around to people who love animals. You need more money and directed help and I can't think of a better group than the SPCA as they really believe in spaying animals as you do so much. So, hang in there, maybe this will work. Best wishes, I'm jealous , you have a life of discovery and definitely aren't bored lol. Mike

      @VetTails  6 лет назад

      Wow thank you so much for passing on my info, I am trying to attract more animal lovers to the channel. I am not sure about an anode in the tank, will look into that. I do filter all the water going in and out of the tanks but that one aft tank (that wasa previously undiscovered) wasn’t cleaned the last time we did it so I suspect that was the source!
      Thanks for the advice and stay chuffed!

      @@VetTails Sometimes marine folks have limited time online so I did some research on this. Aluminum Tanks (part of a large article) Aluminum
      Ugh. This inexpensive material has its uses on a boat, but it's used in too many unsuitable applications just because it is cheap. It makes lousy hardware but good sail boat masts and great fuel tanks, so long as they are installed properly. It makes for lousy trim and moldings; it makes for lousy machinery casings like winches and spotlights. Aluminum cannot be cast in good marine grade alloys, thus all aluminum castings corrode like a banshee. Aluminum is extremely vulnerable to crevice corrosion, which is why so many aluminum tanks fail. Don't blame the material, blame the installer for not doing it right. Done right, aluminum tanks will last forever. Fuel tanks, that is, not water tanks. AL should not be used for water tanks, period.
      Aluminum is similar to Corten steel in that it develops a layer of self-protecting oxide. This layer is so thin you can't even see it, but it's there. Quality marine alloys don't corrode and fail, except where crevices may exist, and when joined to dissimilar metals. That's why it's nearly impossible to keep paint on aluminum window frames when secured with stainless screws.
      Keeping paint on aluminum is extremely difficult, and requires very careful and proper preparation. All these boats with painted but corroding window and door frames are the result of just shooting the raw aluminum without proper preparation procedures, many without even the proper primers that are indispensable to making the paint stay on. Worse, many boats these days simply use residential or recreational grade windows and doors that are not even a marine grade aluminum. There's no hope for this stuff.
      Needless to say, this is what makes maintaining stern drives so difficult. Not only are they vulnerable to galvanism because of all the different metals in the drive, but it only takes a very small amount of stray current to cause serious damage, as shown in the photos above.
      Related Article: Corrosion in Marinas
      Posted January 4, 1999 More in full article, but I have questions for the author, as to what to do re fuel tanks and water tanks. I'll ask them for specific advice. www.yachtsurvey.com/corrosion.htm

    Sooo.. interesting about the tanks, I have to do mine as I have a kind of motley black stuff on the inside surfaces, but first I have to make some access probably something like what you have just so I can physically hand clean the surfaces. But the lesson about the chlorine was good, I was going to use bi-carb and vinegar.
    You should have something like a food grade 2 to 20 micron filter on your fresh water pump system, and you should probably swap that out, or alternatively fit one in.
    What happens with the turtles shell, does that ever heal up again?
    ... have a good one ..

    • @VetTails
      @VetTails  6 лет назад

      The shell can heal yes, so over time it will have a scarred appearance but otherwise be normal. It heals similar to bone.
      I do have two filters - one for filling the tanks and one before the tap, both are carbon and 5 micron so pretty good!
      Good luck with your tanks!

    I suppose if you won the lottery, you could fit copper lined tanks, with UVC sterilizing lamps in there. FDA approved food grade epoxy is available to paint over the aluminum and stop corrosion in the meantime.

    • @VetTails
      @VetTails  6 лет назад

      I was considering the epoxy paint but the way the tanks are set up I think it would be near impossible to coat every surface, and I worried it would then corrode below the paint in places missed. Wouldn't that be nice to win the lottery - I got invited on one of the big power yachts in the marina and their water filtration system is amazing - UV sterlizing and all!

    • @lyfandeth
      @lyfandeth 6 лет назад

      Epoxy tank lining is usually very reliable, especially if you use long sticks and rollers or swabs to reach hard places. Or, it you get an insecticide or automotive rustproofing sprayer, they all have tips that sent a "shower" of liquid out sideways 360 in a spray. The point is there are ways to do it, if the alternative is ripping up the flooring and welding in all new tanks. It doesn't look like bladders would really work for you, not to the full spaces.
      UV filtration is what pros (in drinking water, aquariums, koi ponds) have used for years. Yes, it uses light bulb under water (ugh) and they eventually burn out, and they need electricity, but they do literally rip apart DNA and that kills *everything*. I keep getting tempted, even here in the land of supposedly clean water.

Deffo thought about bleaching them out but if no good on Alu then 500ml anti-bac handwash recirculated as you fill the tanks - so all surfaces get coated. Surprised you've not got Alu poisoning and gone mental already ! Pity you can't get them spray plastic coated or something !
    Pleased about the owl as birds aren't known for getting better ! And amazed about the turtle - that was a deep cut !
    We've not had much luck with birds. Only 2 successes out of many failures. One of the successes hung around - would walk around the yard and peck at everything. One day we caught it walking around with a polystyrene tray in its beak so it couldn't see where it was going - hilarious !
