    This song was a MONSTER live. I saw it in 1977. At the end of the song Steve Howe had his pedal steel on wheels and would roll it around the stage. Chris Squire used to play a triple neck bass for the song Awaken on this Tour.

    Steve Howes use of the pedal steel is so unique. I've been a Yes fan since the 70's. I was always enamored with guitar playing. I guess your ears mature with age. Fantastic!

    I think you mean steel guitar, not slide (2 different animals). To my knowledge, he does not play blues slide but rips it up on steel. He credits Tenn Ernie Ford's steel player for sparking his interest in the instrument. It is featured on And You and I and Siberian Khatru. He also played an electric sitar but not on this album. What a creative mind! Love your reactions. Please keep it up!

    Wow! I'm glad to see you reacting to more Yes. And _Going for the One_ is one of their best. The album hit #1 on the U.K. album charts during the height of the punk movement. Which is pretty astonishing! This L.P. contains one of their all time masterworks, "Awaken", which is cited by many Yes heads to be their best song, including one Jon Anderson. I look forward to the rest of your reactions, Justin. I'm all in when it comes to Yes.

    Good job, Kenneth! 👍 It WAS better for Yes to have Wakeman back, although he returned mainly cuz he was broke. Manager Brian Lane was an underhanded snake, but he did get deals done. 😉 Also, the reason they recorded in Switzerland was for tax reasons. A lot of UK musicians were doing the same thing at the time. Yeah, the slide guitar is definitely not an instrument commonly seen as a solo instrument in rock bands! Steve basically shreds wallpaper with the thing, IMO (just wait to see what he does with a 12-string electric on "Awaken".) The bass part is one of Chris' patented McCartney-esque walking things (here's Miguel Falcao doing a nice cover of it: ruclips.net/video/GkERbSXIpAQ/видео.html). Re: 8-string basses, Chris' 8-string Rickenbacker features on this and the next album. They were sort of in vogue at the time. I know Stanley Clark, John Paul Jones and Greg Lake were all playing them in the mid-late 70s, but then they sort of went out of fashion. They *did* take up a ton of space in the mix.
    Oh, one other thing: This bass part isn't necessarily Chris' trickiest, but it's still full of twists and turns. But what amazes me (again) is how Chris could sing a vocal counterpoint that is almost diametrically opposed to the main melody. While playing his bass part. 😳

      Very cool information. With the exception of TFTO(which I have). I love and have all of their 70's output and even a boatload of their solo stuff, mostly Wakeman of course. I even enjoy Tormato. Quirky but cool in my opinion. In the late 70's when I was in high school and blasting my music in my room my mom hated most of it but some YES and Wakeman solo stuff. She was a pianist and organist all her life and appreciated it. Cheers. I'm looking forward to Justin's opinion of Turn Of The Century and Awaken. Absolutely beautiful songs. Parallels is actually my favorite for some strange reason...

    "back in the day" ,as they say, there were albums that focused your attention on a band, even if they'd been around for years. to me, for led zeppelin it was "presence", for pink floyd it was "animals" and for yes it was "going for the one". i still remember sitting in my neighbors bedroom late at night,smoking weed and listening to side two of this album over and over. there are two songs on side two. she like "wonderous stories" and i liked "awaken". the mid 1970s were some of the best times of my life,largely because of the music i discovered back then.

  • @neilloughran4437
    @neilloughran4437 11 месяцев назад +4

    This album was a big influence on my musical tastes, I recall seeing it a lot in people's music collections and Wonderous Stories was a big tune on the radio when I was about 8 or 9 years old ... I always felt it was incredibly muddy though... the production is very busy and the sounds very midrange.. you can barely hear Jon's lyrics at all... I heard some of the demos from this album and they had better production to me especially the drum sound... looking forward to hearing Awaken as that is something else and one of the greatest pieces of music period.

    I think I recall hearing Geddy Lee say this was one of his favorite albums of influence. Hearing this song though I think there's too much going on making it a little convoluted, like the saloon-style piano and the slide guitar is a bit much. I agree with you on the bass, I feel it should have been up more in the mix.
