If you live in zones 2-6, I would space them 2-3 inches apart. That will give them room to grow in the future. Also, I will water once to settle the soil around them. Unlikely that I would have to water after that. Thanks for watching
YES!!! I've had a bag in the fridge for a bit now and was gonna just wing it. So, so, so glad you made this because they were going into the ground today if it doesn't snow. (I'm in zone 7b as well in the midsouth 😊 and since following your monthly to do list, my garden has been flourishing! Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos, they are extremely appreciated)
I never attempted to plant tulip bulbs because of the squirrels but last week I found gorgeous deep purple almost black tulip bulbs at my local super market on clearance and couldnt resist. Shockingly in zone 6 I was easily able to dig holes to plant the bulbs. I havent looked since to see if they dug them up. I cant wait til spring to see if they come up, I planted them close to where I have allium bulbs and think by the combination will be gorgeous.
I live in Ontario and we have lots of squirrels. So I plant my tulips 6 -8 “ deep so the squirrels don’t get them, otherwise I’d might as well kiss my tulips goodbye. I’m really looking forward to seeing your display. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
I feed the birds and squirrels also. I find that if you keep their little bellies full of peanuts, they won't usually dig up the bulbs. Of course having three cats also keeps them at bay. Look forward to seeing all the beautiful tulips in bloom in the spring! Won't be long now.
You have squirrels. I have the double whammy of squirrels and deer. The first year I found out fast that the tulips that the squirrels didn’t get, the deer did. Only daffodils in my yard now. 🐿 🦌
I can't wait to see those white Maureen tulips. I love white flowers, especially when mixed with purple. I planted white daffodils for the first time last fall, "Mt Hood" and mixed them in with "Purple Prince" tulips. Most of my daffodils are "Ice Follies" which I like for their paleness, and they never fail to return. I just though I would try add something different this year.
My backyard squirrel got sick off a bad tulip bulb, now she won’t touch them. In zone 10 she doesn’t have much experience with tulips so she is sticking to California walnuts, pecans, pomegranates and oranges. I know California pecans sounds weird, but my grandpa gave me So many Texas pecans I shared them with the squirrel and now we have Pecan trees 🌳
Not sure if it’s my tulips or my daffodils just yet but I am starting to see little green buds popping up from the ground and I cannot wait! Now if it would stop raining I could get some primroses in the ground as well.
Hey Jim - we found bags of tulip and daffodil bulbs we had forgotten we bought in early fall - they were in a cabinet and not cold treated. We panicked and planted them last weekend. Do you think they'll still come up?
I have a lot of daffodils most of them already poking there heads up here in January up here in Se MI zone 6a about month ahead of normal, which is the earliest I've ever seen them do this normally its about mid Feb at the soonest when they start showing them selves. They really need dont need much cold to come up bc it hasn't been that cold so far this winter
I remember planting like 400 last year and freaking out when they started to come up before winter was over lol. They turned out just fine but man...I was upset for a bit lol Of course then there was the debacle that one side came up orange and the other multi colored. Bought more this year hope I get it right this time.
My tulips mostly come back nicely, so I don’t remove them. I saw your planter and birdbath next to the planting spot, so is it possible, after the brown/yellow leaves are gone, to put a (larger) planter with annuals or something like your succulent planter from last summer (I will try one next season) on top of them (and my other planted bulbs) or will that compress the soil around them to much? BTW, I´m thrilled that you continue your monthly garden to do videos (at least you announced one for next month; or did I get that wrong?). Thank you!
Do you know any good resources for trying to identify unknown bulbs? My husband and I moved into new house this year and we're trying to figure out what's in our yard. I think we have tulips and daffodils? But there are a few other things that seem like they will remain a mystery until they bloom.
do you cold treat tulips if they are in container? I only do tulips bulbs in Chapel Hill in large containers that I can cover because the squirrels are just relentless.
I live in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin zone 5a. Would I be able to plant tulip bulbs once the snow is gone and expect them to come up no issue? I have never planted any types of bulbs and thought since I hadn’t planted them back a few months ago I missed my window for 2021 but if I can still plant some I would love to! I do all white blooms in the front of my house so would want to get my hands on white varieties.
I luckily don't have voles in this yard, but I did at the old house. The squirrels are always a problem. I just feed them. Why bother fighting against them
@@JimPutnam I stop feeding birds and squirrels in the spring because of bear activity, they are very hungry at that time. I live across a river from a NF that is a bear sanctuary but they don't stay there, they wander a lot especially when foraging for food.

Thanks for the tips, and God help those who live in zone 2 & 3!! 😣🥶
I love how close you planted them. Thank you.

Awesome, good luck with them. Thank for following along

My squirrels are crazy around here! So I have to ask because I just planted my tulips at 8 inches, do your tulips pop up okay?

Good tip regarding how best to add back the soil. Tulips alongside the Birdbath 👍👍👍
Love to see bulbs splattered amongst a flower bed. It will be beautiful. Tfs. 👏🏻💕
Looking forward to seeing the tulips!!

The deer do love tulips. Kinda crazy what they do to them.
@@JimPutnam Yes. And my back yard looks like Halloween because what I don’t cover they’ll browse on! lol

Yup! Zone 7a Maryland here and still planting tulips and alliums. Better in the ground than just laying around. Thanks for the video Jim
Yeah, it's not really late. I have planted cold treated tulips in February. I just like things off my list😂.
@@JimPutnam great point about the excessively rainy weather that kinda put a wrench in my “plans” too 😂😂
Waiting for spring. We all need a boost.
Looking forward to Spring
Waiting for a dry spell here in GA so I can get my bulbs planted too!
It's been pretty soggy here. At least all the daffodils I planted are getting well watered!

Putting mine in today too now that the sun is out in Smithfield!

Daffodils.
They sprout earlier.
Hey Jim - we found bags of tulip and daffodil bulbs we had forgotten we bought in early fall - they were in a cabinet and not cold treated. We panicked and planted them last weekend. Do you think they'll still come up?
Yes both will come up. Daffodils will do great. Tulips may under perform without some good cold.

Yeah, daffodils will grow right down to the gulf. They need almost no chill hours.

I'm sure you will. That panic is universal really.
@@JimPutnam True! LOL :D
The bulbs only grow once? Or can you dig them up and replant?

You wouldn't need to cold treat them in containers left outside in zone 7. Maybe in eight and nine they would still need some refrigeration.

Darn squirrels had dug up a few daffodils for fun, so I decided to put the tulips in pots with a cloche.
Nex year I want to try Tulips! 7b
Is there a reason you don’t use bulb food?
really! so early in the year. mine are perennials, i wonder why youre treating them as annuals?
A good part of the country they are perennials, but in warmer areas they don't get enough winter cold.
@@JimPutnam ah. makes sense. like an amaryllis bulb almost
I'm in 7B also. Is it too late to buy some bulbs and put them in the ground ? How long do they need to go in the frig?
Colorblends sells pre-chilled bulbs
THANK YOU for letting me know. I had no idea companies sold pre-chilled. I will check with them tomorrow.
You planted them too close to each other plus you don't worry about rebbit and squirrels?
Look at recent videos to see them flowering. Squirrels can be an issue. I have covered beds before until the soil settled
👋😄
Do you have issues with voles and squirrels eating on them? It's a big problem for me here in Western NC zone 6b.

squirtels? cause mischief?
hahahahhahahah
Speaking of tulips, how about that bitcoin!
